- Chapter 8 - The Mastermind Appears Again
Song Laosan’s fingers trembled. “I told you, I really don’t know. I was just… working for money. I really don’t know who he is.”
“Working for money? Your mother was diagnosed with uremia and hadn’t been admitted for treatment, but then she suddenly got into the hospital recently. Is this related?”
“Is it or isn’t it?”
“It is.”
“You took a desperate risk for your family. Do you think you’re a hero? You think you’re a great filial son? What a joke! Is it okay to put a knife to an innocent person’s neck repeatedly for your family? Is it okay to disregard two innocent lives for your family? To watch them turn into charred dust?”
“How many times have I said it! I really don’t know about those two people… When I was running, he called and told me to get a box from the records room. Who knew there was a bomb in there!”
“He also told me not to rush out, that he would meet me outside… I had a vague feeling the box was suspicious, so I put it down and ran out as fast as I could. I really didn’t know there was a bomb inside! And at that time, there was no one else in the building…”
As Song Laosan spoke, he howled, tears and snot flying.
“Who is he!”
“I don’t know. We only talked on the phone, and he was always the one who called me. He never told me his name.”
Lu Xiao glanced at Wang Deng next to him. “Check the call records.”
He pursed his lips and continued to ask, “You said you were working for money. What was the job?”
“…”
Nineteen hours ago, at the Ren’ai Physical Examination Center.
Song Laosan didn’t dare use any lighting equipment. Relying only on the light from the streetlamp outside the window reflecting on the road and into the room, he found the blood samples. He huddled in the storage room, his palms sweating as he held the test tubes.
A voice accompanied by a faint static on his earpiece said: “Destroy it. Now.”
Song Laosan took a deep breath. “Should I pour it out or…”
The person’s voice on the other end suddenly grew angry. “What did I tell you before? Follow the plan! There must be no mistakes.”
Song Laosan’s hands trembled as he hesitated. The person on the phone spoke again: “Song Laosan, don’t try any tricks. If this goes wrong, you and your old mother can reunite down below!”
Song Laosan’s heart steeled. As if he had made up his mind, his gloved hand moved along the wall to the lab bench. He gritted his teeth, opened the door of the high-temperature sterilizer, threw the blood samples in, closed the door, and flipped the switch. A faint beep echoed in the silent building. The indicator light on the sterilizer turned on.
The temperature was set to 135 degrees Celsius, for 15 minutes.
Those fifteen minutes felt as long as a century. He huddled by the sterilizer until he finally saw the indicator light turn off.
After everything was handled properly, his heart finally felt at ease.
Then he suddenly noticed a red and blue light flashing outside.
“It’s over, I think I’ve been spotted by the police!” Song Laosan said in a low voice, a hint of panic in his tone to the person on the other end.
“Don’t panic. Where are you right now?”
“Still on the second floor.”
“Go to the records room on the first floor right now. I’ll be waiting for you there.”
Song Laosan was very confused. He had been in contact with this mysterious person who paid generously for half a month but had never met them. Why would they suddenly appear now?
Song Laosan grabbed the stair railing and scrambled down. The records room door was indeed open!
But when he went in, there was no one there!
“Where are you!” Song Laosan said in a low but anxious voice.
“Don’t rush! I’m already outside, ready to meet you. Right now, there’s a box in the cabinet by the door to your right in that room. Do you see it? Get it out!”
“What is this? Where are you meeting me?”
“If you want to live, just get it and wait for my instructions. Why are you asking so many damn questions?”
“Okay… I have it. I’m coming out! Where are you?”
There was no sound on the earpiece.
Song Laosan felt a spherical object in the box in his hand roll and make a faint beeping sound.
What is this? Song Laosan felt a terrible premonition. His subconscious told him to run as far away as he could.
“Hello? Hello?” Song Laosan immediately put the box down, pulled out the dagger he carried, and quietly slipped out the side door to get in his car, only to find the police already had their eyes on him.
Panicked and with nowhere to go, Song Laosan saw a woman walking past the side door, holding a laptop bag. He immediately pounced on her and took her hostage.
He held the knife to the woman’s neck as he backed up, until he was in the car.
But just as his car pulled out, a deafening sound came from behind him.
The sound made Song Laosan jump. What was in that box just now?
As he looked in the rearview mirror, he saw Lu Xiao’s Ford Raptor right on his tail, and a dark gun barrel was pointed steadily at him from behind…
“Hey! Talk!”
Lu Xiao’s voice from the interrogation room pulled Song Laosan’s thoughts back to the present.
“I’m asking you one more time, what did you do!” Lu Xiao gritted his teeth, his knee pressing against Song Laosan’s neck.
“At his request, I destroyed something.”
“What thing?”
“A few… blood samples.”
“Why did you have to destroy them? Where are they now?”
“Why would I care! I just wanted the money! They’ve already been incinerated at high temperatures and mixed with a strong acid before being poured away.” Song Laosan laughed hysterically.
“Blood samples?”
Lu Xiao remembered the storage room on the second floor that was full of reagents and refrigerators.
“Song Laosan, what on earth… were you doing?”
Song Laosan laughed. “No matter what you ask, it’s useless. Those people… they’re not someone you can mess with.”
Lu Xiao leaned in. “Those people? Song Laosan, you’re about to die, don’t you know that! You’re being so stubborn! You hid in the bathroom and passed out, so you slept peacefully, but do you know that a scar-faced man came to silence you?”
Song Laosan’s eyes wavered. “You saw one of them?”
“What do you think? Do you think I got all these wounds by myself?”
Only then did Song Laosan notice the new cuts on Lu Xiao. The dark circles under his eyes made him look like a grim reaper who had come to collect his soul…
Shen Zhao let out a faint chuckle. “He’s certainly very badly wounded.”
Song Laosan hesitated, his lips pressed into a tight line. After a long silence, he finally said, “I know one more clue, but I want to see my mother first…”
Before he could finish, the glass window in the room, which a maintenance worker had just repaired, shattered with a loud smash. Instantly, glass fell to the floor, and a silver bullet ripped through the air, heading straight for Song Laosan’s bed!
Lu Xiao reacted in an instant, pulling the machine that Shen Zhao had pushed aside to block the bed, creating cover for everyone. Shen Zhao rushed forward to check on Song Laosan.
Song Laosan screamed and thrashed, but he could only twist around helplessly because he was still restrained. Shen Zhao looked for a long time and finally found a bullet hole in the pillow and a shell casing embedded in the mattress.
“Shut your mouth! Do you want the people who want to kill you to know exactly where you are?” Shen Zhao’s voice was low, but his eyes were grim.
Only then did Song Laosan stop his cries. Shen Zhao calmly took out a pair of pliers, and under Song Laosan’s terrified gaze, cut all the restraints that were binding his hands and feet.
“Don’t make any extra moves, and you might live. Do you understand?”
Song Laosan immediately scrambled off the bed as if he were full of gratitude, and huddled into a ball behind Shen Zhao.
Lu Xiao had already pulled out his pistol. When he saw no further movement outside, he prepared to give chase, but worried it was a trick to lure him away.
He was about to give some instructions but turned to see that Shen Zhao had completely taken control of Song Laosan, and Wang Deng was standing by, ready for any surprise attacks.
With no time to waste, Lu Xiao nodded his thanks to Shen Zhao and rushed to the window, scanning the street across the way. He saw a black figure moving quickly along the edge of a rooftop on the opposite building!
