- Chapter 101 - A Breakthrough Performance
Lu Xiao’s fingers rested lightly on the sofa’s armrest. He understood perfectly well that the man before him was questioning his identity.
As for his background, Lu Xiao had come prepared. Before arriving, he had used his grandfather’s connections to link himself to a notorious figure in the overseas underworld. Now, the most pressing issue was what to do with the hidden camera in his hand…
His expression didn’t flicker. Instead, he let out a low chuckle. “I see now! So you people are just a bunch of snobs looking down your noses. What’s the matter? You think I can’t fucking afford it?”
He casually reached for a cigar box on the table, pulled one out, and swept it past the tip of his nose to catch the scent. “The old man back in Vancouver told me to keep a low profile on this trip back to the country,” he said nonchalantly. “I knew I shouldn’t have listened to him!”
“Low profile? The price of a low profile is being looked down upon by a pack of gatekeeping dogs!”
He twirled the cigar between his fingers, his eyes narrowing. “How about this: why don’t you give Old Baron a call right now and ask him what his only grandson’s Chinese name is?”
“Though, I’m afraid the old gentleman is likely asleep at this hour.”
The man’s eyes darkened. He had indeed heard of the most powerful Chinese syndicate in Vancouver. Rumor had it that the maternal side of that family was plagued by a hereditary liver ailment—matching the profile of their current interest.
After a moment, the man smiled. “It seems we have indeed been negligent.”
He stood up and approached Lu Xiao, though his gaze was still calculating. “In that case, which ‘child’ caught your eye tonight? I can arrange a private room for you to make your selection…”
Lu Xiao snorted. “A private arrangement? I wouldn’t bet on it. You have no idea… my partner back home has a hell of a temper. If he found out I was having a private rendezvous with some little boy or girl… believe me, he’d throw a fit, start a scene, and threaten to hang himself right then and there!”
The two men in the room paused, about to speak, when—
BANG!
The door was violently thrown open!
Everyone’s eyes darted toward the entrance to find a visibly incensed Shen Zhao. His trench coat flared with the force of his movement, his silhouette sharp and radiating pure fury.
The man in the gold-rimmed glasses frowned. “Who is this? How did he get in!”
Before the host could answer, Shen Zhao cried out in a voice full of anguish, “Li Heng! Have you lost your mind?!”
Lu Xiao’s brow furrowed. The moment their eyes met, a smirk played on his lips, his voice dripping with playful mockery. “My little ancestor, which nerve have you tripped over now?”
“Everyone else has returned! Why are you still in here?!”
“Huh?” Lu Xiao arched an eyebrow, putting on the face of a carefree bastard as he leaned back against the sofa. “They won’t let your husband leave…”
The man in gold-rimmed glasses: “…” The host: “…”
“But baby, what are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you to go rest?”
“I don’t believe you! Tell me the truth—why did you leave me behind?” Shen Zhao’s voice carried a sob, sounding exactly like a betrayed wife who had caught her husband red-handed.
“Tsk, I was just looking out for you… we were so ‘intense’ last night, and you looked so drained today.”
“Pah!”
Shen Zhao lunged at Lu Xiao. In the next instant, his hand swung up—SLAP! The sound was incredibly crisp.
He had slapped Lu Xiao’s mask clean off his face!
The onlookers were momentarily paralyzed with embarrassment; they hadn’t expected the situation to spiral into such chaos.
“Are you trying to keep some other little boy behind my back?!”
The room fell deathly silent. Shen Zhao’s tone was as cold as a blade. A second later, he snatched an ashtray off the table and moved to hurl it at Lu Xiao!
In a flash, Lu Xiao dodged and grabbed Shen Zhao’s wrist. “You’re making a damn scene again! I told you, I only came here for Grandfather!”
As he spoke, Lu Xiao winced, rubbing the bright red handprint on his face.
“I don’t believe you! If you weren’t doing something shameful, why would you stay in a room alone with them behind my back?”
Furious, Shen Zhao glared at the two men standing near Lu Xiao, his “jealousy” reaching a boiling point. “Did you take a liking to these two old men? Tell me!”
Like a crazed concubine, Shen Zhao continued his accusations while swinging the ashtray indiscriminately at the two men standing near Lu Xiao!
The host’s cheek twitched as he scrambled to dodge. “Sir, you’ve misunderstood! It’s really not like that!” he shouted, trying to calm Shen Zhao down while running in circles around the room.
Seeing the room turn into a total mess, Lu Xiao lowered his voice and shook his head helplessly.
“Put that down!” Lu Xiao hooked his arm around Shen Zhao’s waist, pulling him close. “You’re getting more unruly by the second!”
Shen Zhao let out a cold huff, turned his head, and bit down hard on Lu Xiao’s shoulder.
“Holy—! You brat!”
Lu Xiao winced and tried to shove him away, but Shen Zhao bit down on Lu Xiao’s hand and wouldn’t let go.
In the brief moment their eyes met, Lu Xiao understood. He slipped the micro-camera into Shen Zhao’s mouth. With a quick flick of his tongue, Shen Zhao rolled it out of sight…
The host stepped in to separate them, but between the slapping, the biting, and the frantic movement, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
The man in the gold-rimmed glasses had quietly approached. While he appeared to be helping break up the fight, his hands were subtly patting down their clothes and bodies, searching for anything hidden.
The host pretended to be kicked over by Lu Xiao, falling to the floor. He used the opportunity to grab at their trousers and shoes, feeling for any devices.
He found nothing.
The gaze of the man in the gold-rimmed glasses gradually steadied, his tone returning to a gentle calm. “You’ve misunderstood, sir. We were merely discussing business with your… lover. Please, don’t let this ruin your mood.”
“Yes! A total misunderstanding!” the host chimed in.
Without anyone noticing, a crowd of guests had gathered at the door. They were whispering and pointing, their voices full of the excitement of watching a drama unfold.
“What’s going on in there?”
“How scandalous…”
“That little lover of his really has the looks and the claws. Quite the handful…”
The host’s expression soured. This couldn’t continue. The man in the gold-rimmed glasses shot him a meaningful look.
The host cleared his throat. “Cough… apologies, everyone. This was all a misunderstanding. Please return to your suites. We will resume the selection process in two hours and extend the viewing time. Interested guests are welcome to continue.”
“Our apologies, Mr. Li, for causing your lover to misunderstand.”
Shen Zhao glared at him. “You’d better be sorry!”
He grabbed Lu Xiao’s hand to lead him out. Lu Xiao stumbled slightly as he was pulled along. “Hey, what are you doing? I’m not done talking…”
“Shut up! One more word and I’ll make sure you never have children!”
