- Chapter 100 - Investigating the Background
Immediately, the other guests present showed visible displeasure.
“What is the meaning of this? I’ve only asked a few questions! If you end it this early, wasn’t our entrance fee a complete waste of money?”
“Exactly! Is this how you treat your guests?”
“Kicking us out halfway through the viewing? Refund our money!”
Lu Xiao remained impassive. He kept his eyes locked on the host before shifting his gaze toward the other guests. A smirk played at the corners of his mouth. “What? Are you planning to open a private VVVVIP suite just for me?”
Lu Xiao’s tone was provocation itself, further fueling the irritation of the other men present.
The host didn’t have time to trade barbs with Lu Xiao; he first had to appease the other guests. “Gentlemen, please return to the entertainment area or your private suites to rest. I will consult with my superiors shortly regarding a reopening and an extension of the selection period.”
The guests cast suspicious glances at Lu Xiao, who was being allowed to stay behind, and many theories began to swirl in their minds.
“We agreed on a bidding process! Don’t you dare try any shady, under-the-table deals!”
The man clutching an ivory cane stormed off in a huff. The other two followed suit, though they couldn’t resist stealing one last longing look at the “prey” inside the display case before they left.
Lu Xiao’s voice was lazy, as if he didn’t mind the wait at all. He slowly raised his elbows over his head and let out a long stretch. “What’s the big deal? If you have something to say, spit it out. I’m in a hurry to get back to my little lover!”
The host’s smile remained perfectly practiced, but a hint of tension crept into his voice. “This is merely a routine check. It won’t take long; there is no need for concern.”
“Oh? A check? Checking for what?” Lu Xiao’s tone rose with feigned disbelief. “What, I spend all this damn money just for you to interrogate me like a criminal?”
The host struggled to find an explanation. He had simply been notified that a red flash had been spotted on the monitors, leading to suspicions that someone had smuggled in a recording device. Stopping a guest of such high status put significant pressure on him.
“Sir, we are merely concerned that you might have ‘accidentally’ brought in prohibited equipment.”
Lu Xiao frowned, crossing his arms over his chest with a contemptuous sneer. “You’re saying I’m carrying gear? Your people felt me up from top to bottom before I even walked through the door. I haven’t even had the chance to complain about being harassed yet, and now you’re pulling this?”
The host’s expression turned cold. “My apologies. Whether it is a complaint or anything else, you may raise it later. But for now… you must cooperate with our inspection.”
The host’s stance was resolute. Lu Xiao glared at him for a moment before speaking.
“Heh, if this is for so-called ‘security,’ I suppose I can understand. However, am I to believe you are targeting me specifically with such discriminatory behavior?”
Lu Xiao tilted his chin up slightly. “For the sake of fairness, every client here today must receive the same treatment I do. Otherwise… don’t blame me for getting ugly!”
As he snarled the threat, Lu Xiao slammed his wine glass onto the floor. It was a classic “broken bowl” gesture—a clear signal that he was ready for a fight.
The host froze, his cheek twitching. Everyone present was a person of standing; if he suddenly forced this issue, it would likely provoke widespread outrage.
Just as he was about to offer a placating smile, a voice came through his earpiece: “Calm him down first and take him to the lounge! I’ll prepare a dark room with a scanner. We’ll move him there in a moment!”
The host smiled and bowed to Lu Xiao. “Very well, sir. We shall honor your request. However, we need to consult with the other esteemed guests before conducting a collective inspection. Until then, please follow me to the lounge to rest.”
A sharp glint flickered in Lu Xiao’s eyes, but his lips curled into a faint smile. Internally, he was already calculating his escape.
“Sure. I don’t mind a quieter place, provided your actions are justified…”
He followed the host into the depths of the exhibition hall, his silhouette stretching long under the cast of the magnificent crystal chandeliers.
Meanwhile, in the entertainment area, Shen Zhao sat sipping his drink with narrowed eyes, his gaze fixed on the hallway. The others who had followed the host after the bidding had all returned, yet Lu Xiao was nowhere to be seen.
The coldness in the depths of Shen Zhao’s eyes was like an undercurrent surging beneath a sheet of ice.
The lounge was minimalist in its decor: black carpets, a single floor lamp, and walls embedded with large panels of reflective carved glass, making the room look like a high-end private club.
When Lu Xiao entered, he scanned the room. Someone was already sitting on the sofa—a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. Unlike the others, he wore no mask.
The man’s gaze locked onto Lu Xiao, and the air in the room felt as though it were being compressed by an invisible film. The host quietly closed the door behind them.
The man in the gold-rimmed glasses offered a gentle smile. To Lu Xiao, he looked exactly like a “beast in human clothing”—a polished predator.
“Mr. Li Heng, I apologize for the intrusion. We are simply experiencing some minor issues with our internal system and need your cooperation to verify some information.”
Lu Xiao shrugged nonchalantly and plopped down onto the sofa. He crossed his legs, his toe tapping the air rhythmically.
“Verifying me?” he asked in a roguish, swaggering tone. “I’d bet a fly couldn’t get in here without passing three rounds of security.”
“Or is it…” Lu Xiao swept a meaningful glance toward the host, “that you think I’m picking too slowly and someone else is getting impatient?”
Lu Xiao sank naturally back into the sofa, acting as if he were the master of the house. Though his tone remained that of an arrogant scoundrel, his fingers tightened almost imperceptibly. He was weighing his options: if it came down to a breakout, who should he knock unconscious first?
Shen Zhao is still outside. I wonder how he’s doing…
The man in the gold-rimmed glasses smiled thinly, his eyes trailing over Lu Xiao. “You misunderstand. I am only here because I wish to understand your preferences, Mr. Li. As you are a new client, knowing your tastes helps us provide better service, does it not?”
Lu Xiao narrowed his eyes. “Preferences? Men, women—I’m fine with either!” He let out a playful, mocking laugh.
The man’s expression didn’t flicker. “I meant that I wish to understand your purpose for being here, Mr. Li. After all, the ‘adoptions’ we provide are a very specific type of matching.”
“Matching?” Lu Xiao scoffed. He leaned forward, toyed lazily with his collar, and looked the man in the eye. “I do everything based on my mood. When I’m in a good mood, I come here to scout things out for the old man back home. When I’m in a bad mood, I wouldn’t even bother to feed a dog.”
Lu Xiao spoke in circles, feigning a lack of comprehension while his mind raced for a plausible excuse to leave.
The man in the gold-rimmed glasses let out a cold chuckle and folded his arms. A sharp, piercing light suddenly filled his eyes.
“I have been unable to find any record of your domestic industries, Mr. Li. Nor can I find any registered enterprises that match your identity as a legal representative. Pray tell… where exactly do you come from?”
