Your Boyfriend is Great! He's Mine Now - Chapter 13
There were no good dreams, only nightmares.
In the following days, Shen Xubai encountered a Waterloo in his work.
“Manager Shen, didn’t you sleep well last night? You don’t look like you’re in good spirits.”
Huang Zihua carried a cup of coffee, his face showing a sneer. “Old Han, don’t poke at Manager Shen’s sore spot. He lost several big clients; how could he possibly sleep?”
He scrutinized the man up and down, showing “concern.” “Manager Shen, if you have difficulties, just speak up. I have a few small clients under me I could split with you. Though they’re just fly legs (small pickings), it’s enough to keep you alive, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to pay your rent.”
This was a public area. The onlookers’ gazes seemed fixed on their screens, but in reality, their ears were pricked up.
Shen Xubai’s complexion remained unchanged. “Move aside, you’re blocking the way.”
The provocation didn’t get a reaction, like a punch thrown into cotton making people feel awkward and stuck.
Huang Zihua was somewhat incensed. He took a step forward and said viciously, “Shen Xubai, who are you putting on an act for!”
Shen Xubai had one hand in his trouser pocket, his eyes half-lowered, and said indifferently, “Do you want to fight?”
Huang Zihua’s expression changed slightly. He had fought with Shen Xubai before. Although that man was 1.8 meters tall, he looked very thin and weak. He hadn’t expected the man’s blows to be so heavy and ruthless; he hadn’t gained the slightest advantage.
Fighting was out of the question he didn’t want to make a fool of himself again.
Han Ting saw that the atmosphere was wrong and immediately stepped out to play the peacemaker. “We’re all highly educated, civilized people; why fight? Zihua, take a look at this fund for me.”
Huang Zihua looked displeased, but there was no reason not to take the step down offered to him.
Shen Xubai’s gaze swept across the crowd watching the drama, and they dispersed like birds and beasts.
Just as he returned to his office and hadn’t yet caught his breath, he received an internal call.
“Manager Shen, come to my office for a moment.”
His supervisor’s surname was Xu, usually a very warm person, but at this moment, he looked somewhat gloomy.
“What’s going on? Several big clients jumped ship one after another. Did you offend someone?”
Shen Xubai wasn’t stupid. Collective jumping ship couldn’t be explained by coincidence. He had a vague conjecture in his heart, but he wasn’t sure.
“Do you know the young master of the Xiao family?”
Confirmed.
Even the last bit of wishful thinking was wiped away.
Shen Xubai couldn’t describe what he was feeling.
“I know him. There might be some misunderstanding; I will find a way to resolve it.”
Xu Jun took one look at him after hearing this. Shen Xubai had been working under him since graduation; he worked seriously, invested steadily, and lacked the impetuousness of young people. Such a subordinate was very reassuring.
“This world is just like this. Life and death are always in the hands of others. Dignity and the like can’t be eaten as food, Manager Shen, don’t you agree?”
Shen Xubai understood the implicit advice and nodded. “I understand.”
Returning to his office, distracted, Shen Xubai loosened his tie and undid two buttons, the collarbone vaguely revealed underneath white and flawless.
He leaned his head against the back of the chair and slowly exhaled, his expression somewhat helpless and dejected.
Although Xiao Yu used to look down on his work in the past, always complaining that the money was little and the work was much, he had never truly intervened.
Although the ending of this relationship was terrible, they had shared some beautiful memories together.
Shen Xubai was unwilling to associate these underhanded matters with him.
But the facts seemed to be just so…
He didn’t understand.
He hadn’t deleted the contact information because he thought it was unnecessary.
Existence was existence; it was impossible to easily erase those three years of time just by deleting a contact.
But he didn’t want to contact Xiao Yu again, either.
After hesitating for a long while, he finally dialed the number. It didn’t ring many times before it was answered.
Besides the sound of breathing in the receiver, no one spoke.
Xiao Yu didn’t seem surprised that he would call, waiting for Shen Xubai to take the initiative to speak.
“Why?”
Xiao Yu laughed listlessly. “Haven’t seen you in days, and the first thing you say is ‘why.’ How would I know what ‘why’ you’re asking about?”
“Don’t play dumb. Why interfere with my work?”
“What are you babbling about? I don’t understand.”
“Xiao Yu!”
“Xiaobai, I drank too much last night, my head is spinning. Cook me a bowl of hangover soup.”
The intentionally softened tone, with a touch of vulnerability, sounded as if they hadn’t gone through that whole series of events involving cheating and breaking up.
The fingers next to his ear turned white, as if an electric current had entered Shen Xubai’s brain, making his breathing difficult. “Xiao Yu, we’ve already broken up. Don’t do redundant things.”
The voice on the other side also turned cold. “Thanks for the reminder. So, on what basis do you demand your ex-boyfriend help you?”
The perpetrator disguised as a savior.
Too absurd.
Shen Xubai braced himself against the tabletop, his voice somewhat exhausted. “Xiao Yu, I never let you down.”
There was silence on the other side, and then the call was hung up.
Shen Xubai closed his eyes, trying to scavenge through his mind for that enthusiastic young man from the past.
But people were complex; sadness was always deeper than happiness.
Those seemingly beautiful pasts he didn’t know when they had been eroded away by endless arguments and cold wars.
“Ding-dong—”
【Xiao Yu】: Seven o’clock tonight, see you at Yun Ge.
Shen Xubai took a glance and turned his phone face-down on the desktop.
He gave himself five minutes to organize his emotions, then retied his buttons, straightened his tie, and plunged into work.
He and Xiao Yu used to come to Yun Ge quite often.
“Hello, Mr. Shen. Young Master Xiao is waiting for you in Yun Cui Room. Please follow me.”
Shen Xubai nodded faintly.
There was only Xiao Yu in the room. Seeing him arrive, he stood up to welcome him. “Haven’t seen you in days, miss me?”
His attitude was enthusiastic, like an old friend he hadn’t seen in a long time.
Shen Xubai’s face was as cold as frost, as if he couldn’t be bothered to answer such a question.
“Why don’t you go home and take a shower and change your clothes? You don’t value me at all.”
“Say what you have to say. I’m not here to reminisce with you.”
Xiao Yu ignored his cold look and calmly poured him a glass of wine. “My collection, drink some.”
Shen Xubai lowered his eyes and held his breath, his slender legs elegantly crossed, his spine straight as a pine. An aura of keeping people at a distance surrounded him, just like a winter plum standing in frost and snow arrogant and aloof, born of nature.
“Tsk, still so unromantic.”
After Xiao Yu finished looking him over, he withdrew his smile and commented, “You seem a bit thinner.”
Shen Xubai lost his patience and went straight to the topic. “Those clients were ones I negotiated with myself; they weren’t brought to me by you. From start to finish, I never let you down. Why would you do this!”
Xiao Yu remembered that Shen Xubai wouldn’t borrow his name for convenience. For many nights, he would be drunk from entertaining, and would force himself to vomit when he got home.
But even so, some clients would still be snatched away by others.
Because some business couldn’t be settled just by playing ball, tasting tea, drinking wine, and putting together proposals.
Shen Xubai couldn’t bring himself to do it he was too high-minded.
“Just some small clients; you’re the only one who cares. I have plenty of resources in my hands, as you know, that can bring you plenty of performance.”
“Xiao Yu, I don’t have the time to discuss this with you. If your purpose was to see me make a fool of myself, well, you’ve seen it. Are you satisfied now? Young Master Xiao.”
Xiao Yu stared at him closely and meticulously, discovering that this man was truly angry.
When Shen Xubai was emotionally agitated, the corners of his eyes would turn red, looking as if overflowing water was about to break through the gates, making one feel heartache while simultaneously wanting to possess him thoroughly.
