You Are the Star I Cannot Touch - Chapter 44
Chapter 44: Wait for Me
One semester quickly came to an end. Mu Yan was reluctant to part with Gong Yutong, but there was no helping it; she had to go home. Fortunately, they could still meet up until New Year’s Eve.
Mu Yan looked at the fireworks—a home, a new year—a meaningless New Year for her.
Chi Yue held her hand, “It’s okay. You’ll have me to keep you company from now on.”
Knock knock The sound of knocking echoed.
Mu Yan opened the door and saw Gong Yutong. “Why are you here?”
“Can’t I come?” She entered and placed the things in her hand down. “They were shipped from abroad. I brought them for you. Bored? I’ll accompany you to set off fireworks.”
“How did you get out? Your family let you leave?”
“It’s nine o’clock. The family dinner is over, so I’m free, naturally.”
“Great, I’ll put on a jacket.” Mu Yan found a white down jacket and put it on. “Yue’er, let’s go.”
“No… I find it noisy. You know me.”
“Alright then, I’ll be back in a while.” Mu Yan happily took Gong Yutong’s hand, holding the fireworks, and found an open space to set them off.
Mu Yan watched the fireworks. She was happy at first, but then she became unhappy, realizing she had no home. She looked at Gong Yutong, reached out, and hugged her. It was only because of her that she was so happy this semester.
She looked down, and Mu Yan looked up. Their eyes met, and something began to sprout, slowly blooming, tempting the other to commit a crime.
Mu Yan leaned in and kissed her.
Slowly, Gong Yutong responded. The kiss was clumsy, but Gong Yutong knew more, and she mastered it with one try. After they separated again, neither of them spoke. They didn’t know why they kissed, and neither wanted to discuss the topic or ask why. They stayed for a while and came back, acting as if nothing had happened. The three of them sat together, chatting, drinking, and eating snacks until one o’clock in the morning, when Gong Yutong finally left.
Throughout the holiday, Mu Yan sent messages and questions to Gong Yutong, and she would reply carefully to each one. Sometimes she was very busy, but she would still reply. When school started, Mu Yan saw Gong Yutong and felt that something was not quite right about her, though she couldn’t pinpoint what. She was still just as good to Mu Yan, and even gentler than before.
In the final semester of junior high, Gong Yutong was busy, and Mu Yan was even busier. She had to study hard to get into high school. Gong Yutong was reading finance books. She went to bed at one or two in the morning almost every day. Sometimes, Mu Yan would coax and plead with her to get her to rest earlier.
Later, when Mu Yan asked her why, Gong Yutong looked at her with a profound smile, not saying the reason, which utterly captivated Mu Yan, making her forget to ask again.
In the mid-term exam, Mu Yan finally ranked second, right behind Gong Yutong, but they were still separated by over a hundred points. Mu Yan studied even harder.
With each mock exam, Mu Yan progressed little by little.
During this time, Gong Yutong took Mu Yan out for a day on the weekend to let her relax a little and not be too anxious.
Mu Yan did genuinely relax for a few days and then went back to studying until the high school entrance exam arrived.
Before the exam, Gong Yutong told her, “I’ll wait for you in high school. As long as you pass, we’ll still be in the same class and the same dorm. I’ll arrange it. You are so outstanding; I can’t be separated from you.”
Mu Yan agreed, but then she kissed her again and ran away.
Gong Yutong never questioned her about it afterward.
After the exam came a long wait. Mu Yan waited anxiously. Even though she knew she could pass, she was still scared.
Gong Yutong called a few times, telling her not to worry too much. She would definitely make it.
A few days later, the results were released. Mu Yan looked at her score. She was second in her school, and although still quite a distance from Gong Yutong’s score, she had passed. Excited, she ran to find Gong Yutong.
“Don’t rush,” Gong Yutong was happy to see her so joyful. She took her hand and led her back to her residence. “I’ll make the arrangements. We’ll work hard together to get into the same university then.”
“Mhm, mhm, thank you!” Mu Yan hugged her. “Without you, I might not have passed.”
“You are so excellent; it’s not about me. The master leads you in, but the student’s cultivation is up to the individual.”
“I still thank you,” Mu Yan looked at her.
Thank you for appearing during my lowest point and entering my life.
Thank you for making me so happy. It turns out I can still be this happy and meet such a good person.
Thank you for giving me the courage to live and the hope to keep going. Otherwise, Mu Yan might not exist in this world right now.
I will work hard for our promise—to get into the same university and graduate together.
Gong Yutong, you are my hope, my light in the darkness.
Mu Yan looked at her, slowly moving closer. They were inches apart. “Thank you for lighting up my life.” Before Gong Yutong could speak, she kissed her. It was just a peck. “I like you.”
“Mhm, I like you too, for being such an excellent friend.”
“Mhm. I won’t be able to kiss you anymore in the future. What if you get into a relationship in high school? Kissing girl friends too much can lead to misunderstandings.”
“That’s true.”
Gong Yutong, I like you. It’s not a friend’s affection; it’s the love between a man and a woman. But I can only hide it in my heart because of the disparity in our statuses.
“Let’s go eat. I’m hungry.”
“Okay,” Mu Yan took Gong Yutong’s hand.
Gong Yutong looked at their hands intertwined.
Mu Yan, I like you. It’s love, but… I hope that one day we can be together. You have to wait for me.
I truly hope I can hold this hand for a lifetime.
Gong Yutong’s phone rang. She opened it: High school starts. After handling your personal affairs, take over the position of CEO of the Gong Group.
She replied with a single ‘OK’ and put her phone away.
Mu Yan, for our future, you will have to suffer in silence for a few years. When I stand at the peak, that will be the moment I confess to you and we get together. No one will ever separate us again, not even death.
