Chapter 34: Campus: First Sight, She Wants To Get Closer To Her
Mu Yan never knew what kind of impact this transfer would have on her. As she pushed open the dorm room door, everyone said the dorms at Z City School were excellent, all four-person rooms. The junior high school she chose was also the most famous, attended by children of wealthy families, and her admission was partly thanks to Chi Yue. The dorm was indeed nice.
Mu Yan found her name, put down her belongings, and suddenly, the bathroom door opened. She turned to look at her and was stunned.
White clothes surpassing snow, skin like congealed cream, an intimidating cold aura, high above everyone, a beauty that eclipsed kingdoms. Their eyes met. Surprise flickered in Gong Yutong’s eyes, then instantly returned to coldness.
She was like seeing a beam of light in the darkness, like a pair of warm hands in the cold winter. Her heart felt warm. Even though she was so cold, Mu Yan felt so warm.
“Miss,” the bodyguard was also momentarily surprised as he put down the items. How could anyone else be living in this dorm? Seeing that their Miss didn’t say anything, he had no choice but to leave.
Mu Yan had been staring at her face, but now she noticed her clothes, which were extremely expensive. She also wondered why, in a four-person dorm, there was only one person, and the other beds were empty.
“My name is Mu Yan. Are you the only one living here?” she asked the question in her heart.
“Gong Yutong,” she replied without emotion. “It has always been just me here. Other students are not allowed to move in.”
Mu Yan was startled. Why? Gong? Could she be the Gong family’s eldest daughter? She had heard from Chi Yue that there was a student named Gong in her class who must not be provoked—that was the Gong family’s eldest daughter, the Gong family that could not be offended in Z City.
“You’ve transferred here,” Gong Yutong stated, not asked, and then understood why. Only her living space was empty; the other dorms were full, so Mu Yan could only be temporarily assigned here.
Her phone buzzed. It was a text from the homeroom teacher: Miss Gong, I am very sorry. The dorms are full, and we could only put Mu Yan in your dorm. We will try to adjust the arrangement later.
Gong Yutong replied with an “Mhm,” put her phone away, found the dorm key, and handed it to her.
“I rarely come back. If I’m not back before nine in the evening, lock the door directly.”
When Mu Yan took the key, her fingertip touched Gong Yutong’s hand—icy cold. Then Gong Yutong left.
“Why is she so cold? So young, yet so cold. Is it like me, having experienced too much?” Mu Yan put away the key, tidied her things, and went to the school gate. Chi Yue arrived just then, and she followed her.
“Yue’er, is the Gong family’s eldest daughter named Gong Yutong?”
“Mhm. How do you know her name?”
“I share a dorm with her.”
Chi Yue stopped, a little astonished. “How is that possible? I checked; she has a single dorm, and no one is allowed to move in. Unless your class dorms are full and there’s no choice. If that Miss agreed, she should be easy to get along with. Just don’t provoke her, and Xiaoyan,” she squeezed her hand. “New place, new name. Let’s start over, okay?”
“I…” Tears welled up in her eyes. Looking at Chi Yue’s expectant gaze, she nodded. “Okay.”
“Good girl. You still have me,” Chi Yue hugged her. “If anything happens at school, remember to find me. There’s a lot of trouble in these rich kids’ schools. Tell me if anyone bullies you.”
“Mhm,” she wiped away her tears. “Thank you.”
“It’s nothing,” Chi Yue pulled her along. “I’ll take you out to eat. I just familiarized myself with the area. There’s plenty of food.”
“Mhm.”
School officially started the next day. Mu Yan briefly introduced herself, and the teacher told her to find a seat. She found an empty spot, but her classmates looked at her strangely, some with schadenfreude. She didn’t quite understand. The homeroom teacher left after introducing her. The first class was Math. After the class, during the break, the students naturally knew where she was staying. It inevitably sparked jealousy.
On her way to the cafeteria at noon, Mu Yan felt neither rejection nor fondness for the unfamiliar environment. She just wanted to escape.
“Mu Yan,” some girls and boys blocked her way. It was nothing else but jealousy that she was staying with Gong Yutong. After all, who didn’t want to get close to her? But in these two years of junior high, no one could get close to her, and now a transfer student had beaten them to it. Naturally, they were unconvinced and wanted to cause trouble.
Mu Yan was not the type to take a loss. A fight broke out. Mu Yan had trained, but she was outnumbered and inevitably pushed and kicked. She felt pain and was wronged, tears in her eyes. She saw a boy about to kick her again. She was too sore to get up and felt a sense of resignation, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t settle the score with them. The boy suddenly stepped back, surprised.
Mu Yan looked back and saw Gong Yutong. She blocked half the light, but she was more dazzling than the light she blocked.
She held out her hand.
Mu Yan hesitated. She was caught so miserably by her. She wanted to crawl into a hole. She didn’t want to use her hand to get up. Her own hand was dirty, afraid of soiling hers. But her hand had such magic. Uncontrollably, she grasped her hand. It was soft and warm. She stood up. “Thank you.”
Gong Yutong looked at them, her eyes extremely cold. One look from her made them retreat several steps. She said nothing and left.
Mu Yan watched her receding figure, the lingering scent of her on her hand—very unique. She tidied her clothes and went to the cafeteria to eat.
In the afternoon class, she finally understood why her classmates looked at her in various ways: she was sitting in Gong Yutong’s seat. She had no deskmate; it was just her. She could also figure out why she was living alone in the dorm.
Gong Yutong sat in her own seat and said nothing to Mu Yan.
Mu Yan felt a little nervous. She didn’t know why she was so nervous. She took a deep breath and listened to the lecture.
Seeing that Gong Yutong said nothing, the students were very curious about whether she and Mu Yan knew each other. Everyone began to speculate. After all, Gong Yutong had never helped anyone or had any physical contact with anyone. Naturally, there was jealousy, and some wanted to curry favor with Mu Yan. Don’t think that junior high students don’t understand these things. Most of them were young masters and mistresses from wealthy families, so the ideas instilled in them from a young age were different, especially since Gong Yutong was beautiful.
Mu Yan glanced at Gong Yutong from time to time. Gong Yutong only occasionally looked at the blackboard. The rest of the time, she was reading a book, a book unrelated to the curriculum. But Mu Yan knew her academics were excellent. She was always first, with perfect scores in everything except Chinese.
After class, because Gong Yutong was in her seat, no one dared to approach Mu Yan.
Mu Yan watched her continue reading. “Do you… know everything the teacher is teaching?”
“Mhm,” she didn’t like to talk much, but she would answer if someone asked, as she felt it was impolite otherwise.
“Then… I’m a transfer student. Could you teach me?” She regretted it as soon as she said it. They had only known each other for a few days, and she was asking her to tutor her. What was her status? What was her own status? But she wanted to get close to her. She wanted to get close to this warmth.
Standing on the brink of despair, she truly needed this warmth. Yue’er could give her reliance and warmth, but for some reason, what Gong Yutong gave her was different—a very warm feeling, and she wanted it.
Gong Yutong looked at her. Tears were in Mu Yan’s eyes. Could it be that if I don’t agree, she’ll cry? It shouldn’t be so… tearful, right?
Mu Yan didn’t get an answer. For some reason, she felt wronged, and a tear fell.
