You Are My Omega - Chapter 48
Fourteen was an important year for both Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu. It was the year of their high school entrance exams, but more importantly, it was also the year when Omega heat cycles and Alpha sensitivity periods could begin. As their guardians, Liu Lingyan and Xu Manyue didn’t dare let their guard down. Every morning before school, they made sure both girls were in stable condition.
Since both women were busy and couldn’t always be home, they decided to install a pheromone monitoring device at home. It automatically detected any changes and sent the data directly to their phones, allowing them to keep track of Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi’s conditions at all times.
Beep.
Xu Shijiu’s pheromone levels were normal.
Beep.
Lin Xinyi’s pheromone levels were also normal.
“Auntie, me too!” Fantuan raised her little arms, trying her best to speak. Although her words were still unclear, the word “auntie” was the clearest she could say. She still couldn’t pronounce “mama” or “mami” properly.
Xu Shijiu had to think it over a few times before figuring out what Fantuan meant. Lin Xinyi, on the other hand, had already crouched down and picked up the wobbly toddler.
“Fantuan, you need to speak more clearly. Come on, say it with Auntie.”
“Me too—”
“Me… me…” Fantuan was clearly getting frustrated.
“Me,” Lin Xinyi gently corrected her.
“Me?” Fantuan still looked confused.
“Me.”
“Me… me?”
“Yes!” Lin Xinyi smiled brightly and gave Fantuan a soft kiss on her cheek. “That’s right. Me. Fantuan is so smart!”
“Heehee.” Fantuan giggled shyly, then pointed at the machine again and tried to repeat herself. “Auntie! Me… me too!”
“You said it wrong again.” Xu Shijiu couldn’t help but laugh.
Fantuan understood the teasing and gave a little huff in protest.
Lin Xinyi stood there quietly watching the two of them. Seeing Xu Shijiu’s cheerful smile made her feel truly happy. Ever since Fantuan joined their home, Xu Shijiu had changed a lot. She used to be moody and stubborn. Her sister often described her as a bit of a tsundere. But now, she was so much more open and gentle.
The two cats helped as well. Heituan and Baituan were no longer kittens but fully grown, and they had played a role in softening her, too.
When Xu Shijiu first found out that her sister was afraid of cats, she wanted to send them away. But in the end, her sister managed to persuade her otherwise.
Now that the cats were grown, if they ever got out when they weren’t supposed to, her sister would quietly avoid them. Strangely, the cats seemed to enjoy bothering her sister on purpose. But they were always careful not to let Xu Shijiu catch them in the act.
With Fantuan and the two cats in her life, Xu Shijiu’s heart had softened completely. She had always been soft at heart, but in the past, she had built walls around herself. Now, those walls were being broken down every day by a child and two mischievous cats.
No one expected that the first abnormal reading from the pheromone detector wouldn’t come from Xu Shijiu or Lin Xinyi, but from little Fantuan, who could barely stand on her own.
“Shijiu, Xinyi, what happened? The pheromone reading on the machine doesn’t match either of your codes.”
Lin Xinyi hadn’t even reacted yet when she heard her sister’s voice calling out anxiously from the monitor. Clearly, she hadn’t checked the camera yet. If she had, she would have seen who the pheromone reading belonged to.
“Jiejie, it’s Fantuan…” Lin Xinyi quickly explained.
“What?” Xu Manyue sounded both shocked and excited.
Xu Shijiu didn’t hear the rest. She looked down at Fantuan, who was sitting in her lap and clumsily pressing the scanner against the gland on her neck. Watching the little one try to operate the machine herself, Xu Shijiu felt both amused and helpless. But when the device displayed an abnormal result, she was completely caught off guard.
She had never imagined that Fantuan would begin her differentiation so early. Usually, it happened much later. The earlier someone differentiated, the more likely their rank would be lower, whether Alpha or Omega. Only in very rare cases, like Lin Xinyi’s, would someone differentiate early and still be classified as top-level.
According to studies, most people with rare traits completed their differentiation just before age fourteen. However, a small number of exceptional cases did show signs of early differentiation in childhood.
Differentiation meant discovering whether a person was an Alpha, Omega, or just a regular person. Until the Alpha’s sensitivity period or the Omega’s heat cycle began, which usually happened at fourteen, there was still a chance of secondary differentiation. Only after those changes would their true identity be confirmed.
Doctors had long predicted that Fantuan would most likely become an Alpha. But looking at this soft little girl in her lap, who was still drooling and unable to speak clearly, who cried so easily and needed constant care, Xu Shijiu found it hard to believe that she could be an Alpha.
She thought it was impossible.
And then, she found out why.
After a series of follow-up tests, the result was clear. Fantuan’s gland released Omega pheromones. From the very beginning, the doctor’s predictions had been wrong.
When someone first began to differentiate, their pheromones were weak and hard to detect. But as they grew and the process continued, the scent would become stronger and more defined.
Everyone had been so certain she would be an Alpha. Now the results confirmed she was an Omega. In families where Alphas were favored and Omegas looked down upon, this kind of news would be devastating.
But none of them were surprised or confused when they saw the results. Not a single one. Because honestly, Fantuan was just too soft and gentle. There was not a trace of an Alpha in her.
“She’s started differentiating into an Omega. At such a young age, her body might be a bit more fragile. As parents, you’ll need to pay extra attention to her care and rest,” the doctor explained to Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu. “This is an emergency guide for reference…”
The doctor went on to explain a lot more. But neither Lin Xinyi nor Xu Shijiu were focused on the medical instructions. Their minds were stuck on one phrase.
“As parents.”
Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu were both teenagers, right in the middle of puberty. Their bodies were going through major changes, growing taller, and maturing rapidly. Lin Xinyi had always been calm and composed. Unlike other Omegas her age, she didn’t wear flashy clothes or makeup. She usually dressed simply, which made her seem older than she was.
Xu Shijiu, on the other hand, had a serious expression and delicate features that gave her a quiet sense of authority. Compared to before, the difference in her appearance was dramatic. The occasional gloom in her eyes made her seem more mature, and the wheelchair added a fragile and refined look to her presence.
The doctor, busy reviewing the test results, didn’t notice how stiff the two girls had become. He confidently believed he had guessed the situation correctly. After all, they looked close, and if they weren’t a couple, how could they seem so in sync? He even thought to himself that it was impressive for people so young to raise a child.
He also assumed the Alpha in a wheelchair was still somehow managing to satisfy the Omega and even get her pregnant. Well, that was understandable for a top-tier Omega. They had high fertility rates.
“Should we explain?” Lin Xinyi leaned in close to whisper in Xu Shijiu’s ear. The doctor wore glasses and was too focused on the report to get a good look at either of them, which made the misunderstanding even more likely.
Xu Shijiu didn’t answer right away. Lin Xinyi thought she was agreeing in silence and was just about to speak up.
But then she felt Xu Shijiu tug gently at her sleeve.
Xu Shijiu lowered her head, but the red flush spreading across her ears couldn’t be hidden. Lin Xinyi’s eyes widened for a moment in surprise, then quickly softened into a bright smile.
Could this mean that Xu Shijiu had feelings for her too?
Thinking back, Xu Shijiu had never responded to her confession. Not once.
“How is Fantuan now? Can we take her home?” Lin Xinyi tried to stay calm, but inside she was bursting with joy. She could barely keep the corners of her mouth from rising.
“Yes. More and more children are differentiating early these days. Just be careful not to let her catch a cold or get sick. It’s not as complicated as Alpha sensitivity or Omega heat cycles,” the doctor replied while confirming that all test results were clear. He packed up the reports and continued with a few more instructions.
“Omegas tend to be physically more delicate. During the early stages of differentiation, it’s best not to use any medication unless absolutely necessary, to avoid weakening the child’s natural immune system.”
Lin Xinyi had intended to take notes, but the doctor was speaking so fast that she couldn’t keep up. She reached for her phone to start recording the conversation so she could listen to it again later.
“No need. I’ve already memorized it,” Xu Shijiu said, stopping her.
As an Alpha, Xu Shijiu had always had excellent memory and physical strength, even if her body wasn’t in good condition. Her memory had never failed her.
Lin Xinyi nodded and set her phone down. She turned to look at the sleeping little girl in the hospital bed. Fantuan’s small face still had dried tear stains on it. Lin Xinyi let out a quiet sigh.
Fantuan cried easily, but never as much as she had during the test. She had called out again and again for her aunties, and it had broken their hearts.
Because of the specialized equipment, they weren’t allowed to accompany her inside. They could only stand behind the glass and watch.
They saw Fantuan strapped into the scanner, crying loudly, unable to move, reaching her tiny hands out toward them with tears pouring down her cheeks.
Fantuan was inside. They were outside. And there was nothing they could do except stand there and watch.
Eventually, she cried herself to sleep. Only then did the rest of the test continue without more tears.
