You Are My Constant Thought and Unforgettable Love - Chapter 10
Despite what was said, Lu Nian still acted as if she were an outsider.
Feng Qiu was rounding up the group members to study after class, but Lu Nian remained huddled in her seat, not moving at all.
The others looked at each other in dismay. Finally, Feng Qiu held her book and lowered her voice, saying, “Sister Shen, aren’t you and Lu Nian on pretty good terms? Why don’t you call her over to study with us?”
Shen Xin glanced back, stood up, and gathered her papers and books into her arms. She leaned down and said softly, “My deskmate doesn’t really like interacting with people. I’ll go keep her company.”
The remaining people were dumbfounded. Watching Shen Xin take her books and sit back in her original seat, they spoke in voices just loud enough for each other to hear, “What does Sister Shen mean by this? Is she not considering herself a human being anymore?” Meaning: Is she choosing to be an outcast like Lu Nian?
But who knew what Shen Xin was thinking, except for herself.
Having returned to her seat, she held a pamphlet and fanned it carefully. It looked like she was fanning herself, but in reality, she was directing all the wind toward her deskmate.
The hot afternoon was drowsy. Several people in the classroom had collapsed on their desks. With the mock exams approaching, there wasn’t even a hint of a study atmosphere.
The hair at the side of Lu Nian’s face was blown upward by the fanning. Those strands of hair seemed to tickle Shen Xin’s heart.
Shen Xin said, “See how good I am? I couldn’t bear to see you all alone, so I came back to accompany you.”
That cool and aloof little deskmate turned to glance at her, closed the open book and exercise pamphlet in front of her, and even capped her pen.
Seeing this series of actions, Shen Xin didn’t understand what she was doing for a moment. Seeing the person beside her stand up, she reached out her hand and pressed it down on Lu Nian’s book. “Just study here. If you think I’m too noisy, I won’t speak anymore.”
Lu Nian didn’t say anything; she simply pulled the book out from under Shen Xin’s hand.
Shen Xin withdrew her hand sheepishly. Her expression was extremely sincere, and she sat up straight and disciplined, looking up at the person standing beside her.
Perhaps because this gaze was too earnest, Lu Nian was momentarily bewitched and actually shook her head.
Shen Xin felt a surge of joy. “So you don’t think I’m noisy.”
Lu Nian nodded slightly, the arc of the movement barely visible.
Thus, Shen Xin packed up the books on the desk in a few swift motions, gripped her pen in her hand, looked up, and asked again, “Then where are you going? Do you mind bringing one more person?”
Naturally, she didn’t mind; otherwise, Lu Nian wouldn’t have brought Shen Xin as they climbed into an abandoned classroom in the old building.
The old building had been vacant for a long time. Many classrooms were used to store miscellaneous items, and usually, not even a passerby could be seen.
Shen Xin watched as Lu Nian skillfully opened the window of the old classroom and flipped inside with a single burst of strength. Her posture was crisp and agile truly beautiful.
She lowered her head and noticed the windowsill was clean, without even a speck of dust; it was obvious that someone wiped it frequently.
Inside the classroom, Lu Nian stood amidst a pile of junk. Her silhouette was lonely. The desks and miscellaneous items were covered in dust, but she wore a blue school uniform, as clean as a sky washed by rain, untainted by a single speck of dust.
Shen Xin imitated Lu Nian’s previous movement and flipped inside, asking, “What is this place? A secret base?”
Lu Nian glanced back at her and independently took a rag out of a box to wipe the desk in front of her.
Shen Xin looked around again and whispered, “This isn’t a place allowed by the teachers, is it? What would happen if we got caught?”
Lu Nian still didn’t speak. She simply pulled out a chair and sat down quite casually. Her books and pen were laid out on the desk; by the look of it, she intended to study hard.
After being ignored for a good while, Shen Xin stopped talking as well. She found a spot for herself to sit and quietly glanced back at that little beauty.
She knew Lu Nian was stubborn and proud to the bone, but her surface always gave people a well-behaved feeling. She hadn’t expected that this feeling was wrong; this little beauty was not well-behaved at all.
The old building was surrounded by trees, and this broken classroom was cool and shadowy. It was also extremely quiet, with only the occasional sound of a bird from outside.
Lu Nian was reading her book seriously. Her brow was relaxed, and she looked easy and comfortable.
Shen Xin watched her quietly for a while, feeling that this little deskmate could not possibly be as contemptible as others said. She was so serious; how could she possibly fail her exams?
The half-open, half-closed window was suddenly knocked upon. Outside appeared a person both Lu Nian and Shen Xin found unexpected.
Lin Fei was actually standing outside, poking her head in and watching. She asked curiously, “You guys skipped class to come here? What are you doing?”
Shen Xin turned sideways to look at her, beckoned with her hand, and said, “If you have the guts, come in and see for yourself.”
Lin Fei froze for a moment, sensing that this person’s intent was unkind. But being provoked like this, she really did climb through the window.
This delinquent student was unexpectedly unskillful at climbing windows. She bumped and stumbled, and as she stepped through, she even knocked over a desk and chair.
This commotion was quite loud. With a booming sound, the dust on the floor was kicked up, making it quite pungent.
Lin Fei coughed incessantly, interspersed with several sneezes.
Lu Nian watched with a blank expression, her eyes widening slightly as if she were dazed by the sight.
Shen Xin covered her nose and waved her hand in front of her face. “Are you flipping through a window or tearing down the house?”
Just as her voice fell, someone else arrived outside.
The patrolling teacher stood outside with his hands behind his back and asked, “You skipped class to come here and tear down the building?”
The three caught red-handed inside the classroom looked out quietly. It was too late to hide. It could truly be called “a turtle in a jar” they had locked themselves inside the bolted old classroom.
In the silence, the crisp sound of a page turning could be heard.
Shen Xin turned her head to look at Lu Nian, only to see her beautiful deskmate very calmly turning a page of her book.
The patrolling teacher felt that the student with the dyed hair tips inside looked a bit familiar. After looking for a while, he remembered wasn’t this Shen Xin, the school’s big celebrity?
“You guys…”
Before the teacher could finish his sentence, Shen Xin spoke up from inside the classroom: “Teacher, we are ‘opening a small stove’ having a private study session. The classroom was too noisy, so we quietly hid here. Look, we even brought our books.”
Lu Nian even gave a nod as if in accompaniment.
The patrolling teacher looked at Lin Fei with half-suspicion. “You say it.”
Lin Fei said, “I wasn’t studying at all. If anyone is studying, it’s them.”
The teacher’s expression immediately soured, and he said sternly, “Once the door to the old classroom is locked, you aren’t allowed in. Instead of learning good things, you’ve learned how to flip through windows? You’re going to get a demerit for this!”
The three of them stood inside looking at him, unmoving.
The patrolling teacher was so angry his face turned red and his neck thickened. He shouted again, “Aren’t you coming out yet?”
Thus, the three of them climbed out one by one, standing before the tall teacher like little chicks.
Lu Nian’s expression remained unchanged, still clutching her book. She was beautiful; no matter how one looked at her, she was likable. Furthermore, she hadn’t said a single word from the beginning, maintaining an air of quiet diligence.
The teacher’s anger dissipated by half just by looking at her. Pointing at Lin Fei, he said, “You, come with me. You two are not allowed to climb into the old classroom again, do you hear me?”
Shen Xin gave an “Aye” and said, “Understood.”
After watching them leave, Shen Xin turned back to Lu Nian and said, “Don’t you think Lin Fei has a problem with her brain? She actually chose this moment to be honest.”
The corners of Lu Nian’s water-caltrop-like lips curled up slightly. Her eyes carried a hint of subtle, hard-to-fathom joy, and her dark eyes brightened a few shades.
Seeing her smile, Shen Xin couldn’t help but let the corners of her own lips rise. She couldn’t help but think to herself that this little beauty was truly “wicked” mischievous deep down.
As the group leader, Feng Qiu did not dare to slack off. She was always catching Shen Xin to explain lessons to her. Shen Xin complained endlessly, but seeing how serious Lu Nian was, a faint sense of shame grew within her. For once, she actually didn’t sleep during class.
Shen Xin’s homework was getting better and better, yet Lu Nian’s papers were still full of red crosses.
The test papers were clean and smooth; the paper was white, and the marks were made with a red pen. The single-digit scores were very prominent.
The handwriting was also very elegant.
Lu Nian held the test paper, her fingers slender and white, her nails trimmed short, and her hands perfectly clean.
There was no expression on her face. Her pupils were distinctively black, and she was as calm as a lifeless porcelain doll.
Shen Xin glanced over in surprise but quickly suppressed her expression. The phone in her drawer buzzed twice. Looking down, she saw it was a message from Feng Qiu.
Sister Shen, is Lu Nian’s homework not done well again?
She thought for a moment and sent back two words: “Quite good.”
Don’t lie to me. I just caught a glimpse. How did she take the test? Even if she chose ‘A’ for all the multiple-choice questions, she couldn’t have gotten this few points.
“The score is alright.”
Sister, are you serious? Save our group. It won’t work if Lu Nian never participates in discussions.
“What is she going to discuss? Just listen to you guys talk?” Shen Xin replied to the message nonchalantly.
If she still scores like this for the finals, won’t you lose to Lin Fei?
“I’m not even worried, so what are you worried about? Besides, there’s no way my deskmate would have the heart to let me lose to Lin Fei.” Shen Xin looked down at her phone. She even smiled while typing, causing Lu Nian to glance at her.
It took a long time before Feng Qiu replied again, …I don’t understand your ‘deskmate-ship.’
Seeing Lu Nian look over, Shen Xin asked her, “Are you curious about what Feng Qiu is saying to me?”
Lu Nian wrote three words on a piece of paper: “Not curious.”
But Shen Xin went ahead and answered herself anyway: “She’s questioning our ‘deskmate-ship.’ I’m going to tell her to stop prying into our emotional lives.”
Lu Nian looked Shen Xin up and down as if assessing her, like she was looking at some rare curiosity.
Shen Xin was amused. “Do you think I’m doing a pretty good job as a deskmate?”
Lu Nian wrote: “Alright.”
There were two more words in her heart she didn’t write out…’Quite silly.’
Shen Xin realized a moment later wasn’t that look Lu Nian just gave her the look one gives a fool? But she felt happy just looking at the elegant handwriting beneath Lu Nian’s pen, so she lowered her head to browse the forum again.
The school forum was very lively. These students all looked quiet and well-behaved, but in reality, they were secretly posting threads to discuss current events.
The thread “The Peak of the Final Exam Battle” was pushed to the front page again. Surprisingly, people were betting on the rankings of Lu Nian and Lin Fei. The stakes were hundreds or thousands of game “Happy Beans.”
Shen Xin scanned the comments below and found that most were betting on Lin Fei; hardly anyone thought Lu Nian would do well.
Unable to take it, she replied: “Lu Nian, ten thousand Happy Beans.”
