Why Won’t the Heroine Break Up With Me? [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 42
“Beep beep beep…”
At six in the morning, the phone alarm rang on time.
Within seconds, an arm emerged from under the blankets and swiftly turned off the alarm.
After a while, faint rustling sounds could be heard in the dimly lit room as Tang Congyue got up and pulled on the tracksuit lying on the sofa.
She climbed out of bed and headed to the bathroom to wash up.
Ten minutes later, Tang Congyue emerged with a few glistening droplets of water still clinging to her slightly pale cheeks.
Taking advantage of the dim light, she glanced at the bed where only Yun Li’s head was visible, sound asleep.
Unable to resist, she bent down and gently brushed her cold cheek against Yun Li’s.
The next moment, Yun Li let out a soft, protesting murmur but remained fast asleep.
Hearing this, Tang Congyue chuckled softly and, without disturbing Yun Li further, stood up and left Room 401.
Tang Congyue went to the cafeteria. As she returned with steaming hot buns and soy milk, she happened to see Zhao Jinhe coming out of Room 403.
Well, what a coincidence.
Suppressing the urge to raise her eyebrows, Tang Congyue looked calmly at Zhao Jinhe.
“The mission has been canceled.” Zhao Jinhe said upon seeing Tang Congyue. After a pause, he added, “The military personnel went to check the situation at Fuxiang Village. The place is empty now, not a single monster left.”
Though disappointed about missing out on the base mission, Zhao Jinhe felt relieved that such a significant threat had been eliminated from the base.
“I see.”
They nodded to each other and went their separate ways.
Back in Room 401, Tang Congyue set down the steaming breakfast. When she glanced over, Yun Li was still asleep. Not intending to wake her, Tang Congyue began eating her breakfast alone.
Tang Congyue had bought buns made from monster meat. Just as she took her first bite, the savory aroma of the meat buns filled the air, startling Yun Li awake.
Yun Li sniffed the air, looking rather adorable as her thick, curly eyelashes fluttered. Soon, she opened her eyes, her expression still dazed. But as the rich scent of meat reached her, her vacant eyes shifted toward the source of the aroma.
At a glance, Yun Li saw Tang Congyue eating the meat buns.
Before she could fully process the situation, she called out Tang Congyue’s name.
“Congyue…”
Only then did Tang Congyue notice that Yun Li was awake.
Assuming Yun Li had woken up naturally, she said without much thought, “You’re awake? Perfect timing, I just bought breakfast. You can eat while it’s still hot.”
Yun Li didn’t respond directly. Instead, she checked her phone and saw that it wasn’t even seven o’clock yet. She couldn’t help but shoot a resentful look at Tang Congyue.
Tang Congyue: “???”
“What’s wrong?”
Yun Li didn’t want to admit she had been woken up by the tempting smell. She averted her gaze and said, “It’s nothing.” then climbed out of bed.
“Why did you get up so early?” Yun Li asked.
“Woke up early to check on the mission situation.”
Oh, right.
Yun Li remembered that Tang Congyue was supposed to go on a mission with Zeng Muhua and the military personnel today.
“How did it go? Is the mission still happening?”
Tang Congyue shook her head. “There are no monsters left in Fuxiang Village. The mission has been canceled.”
“I see. By the way, remember to tell Zeng Muhua.”
“Okay.”
Seeing Yun Li head into the bathroom to wash up, Tang Congyue took a bite of a meat bun and picked up the walkie-talkie from the coffee table, tentatively saying, “Muhua, are you there?”
She had assumed Zeng Muhua would still be asleep at this hour, but to her surprise, her voice came through the walkie-talkie within seconds.
“I’m here.” Zeng Muhua paused briefly. “So? Is the mission still on?”
“It’s canceled. There are no more monsters in Fuxiang Village.”
“That’s good to hear.” Zeng Muhua breathed a sigh of relief.
“Let’s leave it at that for now.”
“Alright.”
Guessing that Tang Congyue might have something else to attend to, Zeng Muhua didn’t say anything more.
Setting down the walkie-talkie, Tang Congyue picked up a cup of soy milk and took a few sips.
Shortly after, Yun Li emerged from the bathroom, freshly washed. She went over to the sofa and sat down, first taking a sip of mineral water before picking up a steaming meat bun.
With the first bite, the soft dough and savory meat juices melded together, each mouthful a delight.
“Delicious.” Yun Li said, licking her lips. “Did you tell Muhua?”
“Yes, I did.”
“By the way, are you hurt from yesterday?” Yun Li asked again, just to be safe.
“No.”
“And what about your previous injury?”
Yun Li glanced at Tang Congyue’s left hand.
“It’s fine, don’t worry. I didn’t use my left hand yesterday.”
Relieved, Yun Li thought for a moment and then said, “Let’s go to the hospital later.”
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Not at all. Have you forgotten that Dr. Guo said you should come back in a few days to check on your wound?”
“I’m already fine.”
“Let’s go get it checked anyway. It’s not like we’re short on points.”
Tang Congyue thought it over and decided not to refuse again.
After breakfast, the two left room 401 and headed straight for the hospital.
They had expected the hospital to be relatively empty at this hour, but to their surprise, a long line had already formed.
Yun Li felt a bit puzzled and was about to say something to Tang Congyue when she overheard two busy nurses nearby chatting.
“What’s going on these days? Why are there so many patients with fevers?”
“Right? It hasn’t even gotten colder lately. Thankfully, the hospital has enough fever-reducing medicine, or I don’t know what we’d do.”
“Exactly.”
Hearing this, Yun Li couldn’t help but frown and glanced at Tang Congyue.
Tang Congyue had also overheard the nurses’ conversation. She gave them a quick look, then glanced at the patients in line ahead. Before she could speak, she felt Yun Li gently tug on her sleeve.
Tang Congyue lowered her gaze. “What’s wrong?”
Yun Li leaned in close and whispered softly into her ear, “Congyue, do you think it might be the flu?”
“Possibly.”
Hearing this, Yun Li grew a little worried. She thought about putting on a mask but realized she had nothing to cover her face with, so she reluctantly gave up.
After waiting nearly twenty minutes, it was finally Yun Li and Tang Congyue’s turn.
Luckily, the doctor on duty today was still Guo Sujuan.
Guo Sujuan clearly recognized the two of them, her gaze instinctively settling on Tang Congyue.
“Did you get hurt again?”
“No, no…” Yun Li waved her hand dismissively. “We’re here for a follow-up.”
Guo Sujuan understood and unwrapped the bandage on Tang Congyue’s hand to examine it. After confirming there were no major issues, she said, “It’s nothing serious. Just apply the medication for a few more days and let it heal for a while, and it should be fine.”
Yun Li breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you, doctor.”
She asked a few more questions before taking Tang Congyue and leaving the hospital.
By the time they left the hospital, it wasn’t even eight o’clock yet. Thinking it was rare for them to have some time out, Yun Li pulled Tang Congyue along to the trading area.
At this hour, the trading area was quite deserted, but it didn’t dampen Yun Li’s enthusiasm for shopping.
After browsing around the trading area without buying anything, Yun Li dragged Tang Congyue to a supermarket that had just opened for the day.
They bought a good amount of fresh vegetables and fruits. Just as they were about to head back, they heard an announcement over the broadcast, calling all ability users who had participated in the battle earlier that morning to report to the administrative area to collect their points.
And so, they went to the administrative area and received a thousand points from the authorities.
Back in Room 401, Yun Li stored all the vegetables and fruits they had bought in the refrigerator inside her spatial storage.
Seeing this, Tang Congyue remembered the black soil in the spatial storage and said, “We need to water the land today.”
Hearing this, Yun Li’s face fell.
Tang Congyue couldn’t help but let a smile curl her lips, but when Yun Li glanced over, she quickly composed herself and added, “You don’t have to do it this time. I’ll take care of it.”
Seeing Yun Li frown, Tang Congyue continued, “My injury is much better now. Let me handle it. If you do it, who knows how much effort you’ll waste.”
Yun Li was already considering it. After Tang Congyue persuaded her a bit more, she finally agreed.
“Then take me into the spatial storage now, A-Li.”
“Alright.”
After bringing Tang Congyue into the spatial storage and watching her go to get the sprinkler, Yun Li headed to the farmhouse courtyard to practice archery. But as soon as she picked up the bow, an idea struck her, and her peach-blossom eyes lit up slightly.
“This idea is pretty good.” Yun Li muttered to herself.
Within seconds, she vanished from the spatial storage.
She returned to Room 401 and then excitedly stepped out, knocking on Zhu Yaqin’s door next door.
Yun Li wasn’t sure if Zhu Yaqin would still be in her room at this hour.
She waited for a while, and when there was no sign of the door opening, she decided to leave. But just as she turned around, she heard a click, the door behind her had opened.
“Yun Li?”
Yun Li turned back. “Yaqin, why did it take you so long to open the door?”
Zhu Yaqin looked a bit embarrassed. “I was in the bathroom. What’s up?”
“Are you free?”
“Huh?”
“I want you to come with me to the trading area.”
“What about Congyue?”
“Congyue is busy, and I also want to give her a surprise.”
A surprise?
Zhu Yaqin didn’t understand, but after accompanying Yun Li to the trading area and watching her buy two Tang swords at the weapon shop, she suddenly realized what the surprise was.
So, Yun Li was buying a gift for Tang Congyue!
Noticing Zhu Yaqin looking at her, Yun Li smiled sheepishly.
“Cold weapons are consumables, so I want to prepare a few extras for Congyue.”
That way, if a Tang sword broke, there would be backups.
Zhu Yaqin suddenly felt her teeth ache with envy. Remembering that she had money now too, she also browsed through the weapon shop and bought a few weapons for herself.
After finishing their shopping, the two left the trading area.
Coincidentally, they ran into Tian Ran on patrol again. Walking alongside Tian Ran, with the deterrence of her authority as the patrol team leader, no one dared to make any moves against Yun Li and Zhu Yaqin.
Back in Room 401, Yun Li first stored the two Tang swords in her space, placing them in the storage room that Tang Congyue never entered, before stepping into the space herself.
Inside the space, Tang Congyue was still busy watering the black soil, completely unaware that Yun Li had ever left.
Seeing her so focused, Yun Li steadied her mind as well, took out her bow and arrows, and began practicing.
…
A few hours later, Tang Congyue returned after finishing watering the black soil.
As soon as she arrived, she saw Yun Li diligently practicing with her bow and arrows.
They say that people look most beautiful when they are seriously focused on their work, and Tang Congyue truly felt this. She stood quietly at a distance, watching Yun Li practice with such dedication.
In the end, it was Yun Li who noticed Tang Congyue and turned her head to look.
Perhaps a little surprised, her crimson lips parted slightly.
“Congyue?”
At that moment, Tang Congyue walked over and gently brushed aside the stray strands of hair swaying near Yun Li’s cheek.
“Are you tired?”
“Not really.” Yun Li paused, then asked, “Did you finish watering the soil?”
“Yes.”
“Then, are you tired?”
“Not tired. I’m used to it.”
Hearing this, Yun Li felt a twinge of guilt for some reason.
Noticing her silence, Tang Congyue pinched her cheek lightly. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, nothing.” Yun Li waved her hand dismissively, then added as if remembering something, “I have a lot of disposable masks stored in my space. We’re not sure if the base is experiencing a flu outbreak, so let’s wear masks when we go out these days, just to be safe.”
Tang Congyue thought for a moment and nodded. “I’ll follow your lead.”
“Then I’ll let Yaqin and the others know.”
“Alright.”
Yun Li set down her bow and arrows, took Tang Congyue’s hand, and led her out of the space.
As soon as they stepped out, Yun Li made Tang Congyue sit down to rest while she picked up the walkie-talkie and tentatively called out, “Hello? Hello?”
Soon, the voices of Zhu Yaqin and Zeng Muhua came through the walkie-talkie.
Zhu Yaqin: “Yun Li?”
Zeng Muhua: “What’s up?”
Hearing their responses, Yun Li quickly explained, “It’s like this, this morning, when Congyue and I went to the hospital, we overheard two nurses saying that a lot of people have been getting fevers lately. Congyue and I suspect it might be the flu, so we wanted to remind you. Also, I have plenty of disposable masks here. If you have time, you can come over and take some.”
What?!
The flu?!
Before the apocalypse, the flu might not have been a big deal, but in the post-apocalyptic world, it was no small matter.
Zhu Yaqin immediately responded urgently, “I’ll come get the masks right now. Also, Muhua, you should take more too. Your parents work at the base and come into contact with a lot of people, I’m worried.”
Zeng Muhua felt the same way. “Qianwu and I will come over now.”
Before ending the call, she thanked Yun Li over the walkie-talkie.
Since Zhu Yaqin lived next door, she arrived the fastest.
As soon as she entered Room 401, Zhu Yaqin asked, “Why did you go to the hospital so early in the morning? Did something happen?”
While taking masks out of her space, Yun Li answered, “No, no, Congyue and I just went for a follow-up check. The doctor said Congyue is recovering well and just needs a few more days of rest.”
Hearing this, Zhu Yaqin felt much more at ease.
At that moment, Yun Li handed a pack of face masks to Zhu Yaqin.
Zhu Yaqin took them casually. “Speaking of which, we haven’t left the base for several days. Tang Congyue’s injuries are almost healed now, should we consider going out?”
She felt she just couldn’t stay idle and needed to find something to do.
Hearing this, Yun Li glanced at Tang Congyue.
“Let’s wait for Muhua to come over and discuss it together.”
“Alright.” Zhu Yaqin paused, as if something had occurred to her. “I’ve been wandering around the trading area these past few days and noticed many people posting tasks in the exchange hall. Do you think we could take on a few?”
Yun Li could tell that Zhu Yaqin really couldn’t stand being idle. She found it somewhat amusing but didn’t respond directly, instead turning to Tang Congyue and waiting for her to decide.
Noticing Yun Li’s gaze, Tang Congyue asked, “What kind of tasks are there?”
Zhu Yaqin thought carefully. “Mostly search and rescue missions.”
“Is that so?” Yun Li didn’t seem very interested.
Tang Congyue said, “Let’s wait for Muhua to arrive and discuss it then.”
“Fine.”
The three of them waited for a while, and five minutes later, a knock sounded at the door.
Tang Congyue got up to answer it and saw Zeng Muhua and Li Qianwu.
“Come in.” Tang Congyue said, stepping aside to let them enter.
Zeng Muhua nodded and led Li Qianwu into room 401.
With two more people in the forty-square-meter room, the space suddenly felt more cramped.
“Face masks.” Yun Li said as she stood up, making room on the sofa for them and pointing to several packs of disposable masks on the coffee table.
“Thanks.” Zeng Muhua stuffed all the disposable masks into the backpack she had brought with her.
At that moment, Zhu Yaqin brought up the topic of the tasks.
Like Yun Li, Zeng Muhua and Li Qianwu weren’t particularly interested in these tasks, but seeing Zhu Yaqin’s enthusiasm, they didn’t want to dampen her spirits. So, they turned to Yun Li and Tang Congyue.
“What do you two think?”
“I’m fine with it.” Yun Li said, then looked at Tang Congyue.
Tang Congyue nodded as well. “I’m fine too. It’s up to you.”
Zhu Yaqin also looked at Zeng Muhua and Li Qianwu.
Seeing this, Zeng Muhua reluctantly said, “Then tomorrow, shall we go to the exchange hall and check it out?”
“Sounds good.”
After deciding on the departure time for the next day, Zeng Muhua left with Li Qianwu, and Zhu Yaqin returned to her own room.
Once they were gone, Yun Li sprawled out flat on the bed.
Tang Congyue found the sight amusing.
She lay down as well, turning on her side to look at Yun Li.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Yun Li wrinkled her nose, then seemed to remember something as she turned to Tang Congyue. “Congyue, last night, Yaqin and I went up to the rooftop and used binoculars to watch a battle between ability users and monsters.”
For some reason, hearing this gave Tang Congyue a slightly uneasy feeling.
“And then?” Tang Congyue asked, her tone carrying a hint of caution that was barely noticeable.
“Those ability users were so impressive! With just a wave of their hands, they unleashed all sorts of powers, fireballs, water arrows, vines… It was dazzling to watch!”
Tang Congyue: “…”
She should have known.
As soon as this thought crossed her mind, Yun Li glanced over again and said with a tinge of regret, “If only you could awaken an ability like that too.”
After speaking, she maintained her regretful expression while secretly observing Tang Congyue. Seeing that she remained as expressionless as usual, Yun Li couldn’t quite gauge her mood.
Was she angry or not?
Thinking of her mission, Yun Li licked her slightly dry lips and prepared to say a few more words, but then she heard Tang Congyue speak.
“Sorry.”
Yun Li: “???”
Huh???
What was she apologizing for?!
“It’s my fault for being useless and not awakening an ability that you’d like, A-Li.”
Yun Li: “!!!”
No, that’s not right!
How did things end up like this?!
Yun Li widened her peach-blossom eyes, only to see Tang Congyue’s gaze lowered, her long, thick eyelashes obscuring the emotions in her eyes. Though Yun Li couldn’t read her expression, she still felt that Tang Congyue looked pitiful at that moment.
For some reason, Yun Li felt a pang of guilt.
Hmm…
Was she being a bit too harsh?
But this was her mission, how could she not complete it?
While she was still wrestling with her thoughts, Tang Congyue quietly reached out and took Yun Li’s hand.
“A-Li… it’s my fault.”
Tang Congyue’s tone was deeply despondent.
Yun Li snapped back to reality. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but didn’t know what. After racking her brains, she finally said stiffly, “No, it’s not your fault. Abilities are randomly awakened… It’s already quite good that you have one.”
Tang Congyue’s eyes flickered slightly, her voice low. “Really? Is that truly what you think, A-Li?”
“Really.” As soon as she said it, Yun Li realized she had softened again, she was actually comforting Tang Congyue. Annoyed at her own weakness, she steered the conversation back. “Since you know your ability isn’t as powerful as the elemental ones, you’ll have to work even harder in the future.”
After speaking, Yun Li stared intently at Tang Congyue, hoping to discern something from her expression. The next moment, she saw Tang Congyue lift her gaze, her dark eyes gleaming faintly.
“A-Li, I’ll work hard. Don’t worry!”
For some reason, Yun Li felt something was off, but she couldn’t pinpoint what. She could only nod.
“Alright, then do your best.”
At that, Tang Congyue smiled. She pulled Yun Li’s hand to her cheek and gently nuzzled it. “A-Li, you’re so good to me.”
Yun Li: “???”
Even when I’m treating you like this?
You still think I’m good?
Don’t tell me Tang Congyue is a masochist?
The thought sent a sudden chill down Yun Li’s spine.
A moment later, she heard Tang Congyue murmur again.
“Thank you, A-Li, for not looking down on me…”
Yun Li: “…”
Oh no, is Tang Congyue really a masochist?
If that’s the case, then wouldn’t her constant disdain just be pleasing her?
If so, how is she supposed to get Tang Congyue to initiate a breakup?
Abruptly, Yun Li felt as if the road ahead was shrouded in darkness.
Tang Congyue glanced up slightly and noticed Yun Li’s dazed expression. A glint of shrewdness flashed swiftly in her dark eyes before she resumed her usual impassive demeanor.
“A-Li, what are you thinking about?”
Hearing this, Yun Li snapped back to attention.
What was she thinking about?
Of course, she was thinking about when you’d break up with me!
Yun Li pursed her lips, unwilling to voice her inner thoughts. She could only shake her head and say, “It’s nothing.”
Tang Congyue narrowed her eyes slightly, not entirely convinced by Yun Li’s words. But by the time Yun Li looked over, her expression had already returned to normal, and she even offered a faint smile.
“A-Li, are you hungry? I can cook today.”
Yun Li wasn’t in the mood to eat at the moment and could only say, “Forget it, let’s just go to the cafeteria… No, wait, maybe we shouldn’t go to the cafeteria. We’re not even sure if the base is experiencing a flu outbreak. It’s safer for us to stay at home.”
“Then I’ll cook. A-Li, you can help me out.”
“Alright.”
Given the current situation, that was the only option.
Yun Li thought to herself silently.
