- Chapter 40 - Wealthy World 11; Heart Voice
Inside the dimly lit corridor, Chu Sicheng’s brows arched slightly. His pitch-black eyes were like a thin layer of ice on the surface of a deep pool, shining brilliantly under the lights, yet leaving everyone oblivious to the dark abyss hidden beneath.
Li Yanzhe was stunned by his unprovoked action. In that moment, he completely forgot his role as the humble, long-suffering man trying to trick the boy into returning. While shielding Zhou Luoluo with one hand, he roared at Chu Sicheng:
“Song Le’an, are you crazy?!”
Even the assistant standing next to Shen Ci, laden with shopping bags, was terrified by Chu Sicheng’s splash.
Good heavens! Truly worthy of being the person his boss took a fancy to!
Initially, when the assistant saw his boss return to the room to fetch a cup of hot water for the boy, he thought it was to let him catch his breath and moisten his throat so he could clear his name in the upcoming debate regarding his tyranny in the Li household. He never expected that the boy had no intention of explaining himself. Instead, he splashed Zhou Luoluo a second time right in front of Li Yanzhe.
Facing Li Yanzhe’s interrogation, his face showed no panic. He even gave the man a provocative smile.
“What’s wrong? Didn’t he say I splashed him? Since talk is cheap, I certainly had to reconstruct the scene for you.”
Since Zhou Luoluo chose to use his heart voice to throw dirty water on him, he would reluctantly use actual actions to validate the other’s accusations. Did they call this crazy? He called this being considerate.
Chu Sicheng toyed with the porcelain cup in his hand. His gaze bypassed Li Yanzhe and landed on Zhou Luoluo, who was clutching his chest and trembling uncontrollably. His red lips curled slightly into a sincere smile, looking like a service professional deeply concerned about a customer’s experience, genuinely seeking feedback:
“How is it, Mr. Zhou? Compared to the last time, was the temperature of the water higher this time?”
Was the temperature higher?! Is that a question a sane person asks?!
” ”
Zhou Luoluo was currently too burned to even make a sound, let alone focus his mind to help Chu Sicheng judge the relative temperature of the two incidents. Besides, he hadn’t been burned the first time, so he had no baseline for comparison.
Supported by bodyguards, Zhou Luoluo barely managed to steady himself and moved to the other room Li Yanzhe used to monitor 3601 to rinse his injuries with cold water. Forget brewing another pot of tea to soothe his beloved Brother Ze, his intermittent wails, combined with a string of profanities that would need to be censored, made the people around him wish they could cut off their ears, bury them in the dirt, and stomp on them until the filth was truly blocked out.
Li Yanzhe couldn’t help but frown. It was as if he was meeting this White Moonlight for the first time, the one who was always generous and graceful in front of him. How could he scream such foul, unbearable inner thoughts?
But considering the other’s status as a victim, Li Yanzhe forced himself to ignore the discomfort he felt at certain words. He looked at Chu Sicheng with a face full of disapproval:
“You really are crazy! Once wasn’t enough, you actually dared to splash him a second time!”
“That’s right.”
Chu Sicheng offered no defense and admitted it flatly.
“I dared to splash him back when I needed your money. Of course I dare to splash him a second time today. Believe it or not, I’d dare to splash him a third time.”
Chu Sicheng smiled sinisterly. “From now on, I’ll carry a thermos with me. Every time I see him, I’ll splash him.”
Under the orange lights, the boy’s round puppy eyes curved slightly. His smile was warm and sunny, as if the act of scalding someone was merely a casual greeting between friends, something routine and insignificant.
The bodyguards nearby couldn’t take it anymore.
“Mr. Song, if you don’t want to forgive Young Master Zhou, you can just say so. Is there a need to physically harm him again?!”
“There is.”
Chu Sicheng arched his eyebrows playfully. “If I didn’t splash him, how would you all get the chance to appreciate the passionate duet performed by Young Master Zhou?”
The duet referred to the screams of pain and the screams of abuse. Chu Sicheng felt he was being very thoughtful. Zhou Luoluo loved to sell misery in his heart, so he simply materialized the misery. After all, hearing is hollow but seeing is believing. Now, everyone would surely believe he was truly the arrogant and wicked canary Zhou Luoluo claimed he was.
However, after hearing his words, the others present didn’t focus on Chu Sicheng’s character. Instead, their faces shifted in unison as if they had discovered something world-shaking. Even the assistant, who had been immersed in Chu Sicheng’s decisive and cool actions, reacted a beat late.
“Wait, no! You mean everyone could hear those words just now?!”
He thought he was the only one who had heard it, and he had been observing Zhou Luoluo for a long time. It turned out these heart voices could be heard by everyone; it was practically a loudspeaker. At that moment, the bodyguards beside him also snapped out of it.
“So you weren’t just feeling sorry for Mr. Zhou just now!”
“I thought you felt bad for him because his apology was so sincere!”
“So you heard it too?”
“I heard it!”
The heart voice, a magical form of expression, isn’t like spoken words where everyone can immediately confirm that the person next to them knows what was said. It is actually a very private experience, much like a diary. It creates a desire to pry, and once someone pries, it generates a sense of superiority, a feeling of “the world is drunk, but I alone am sober.”
Because of this superiority, a person would instinctively hide the fact that they can hear someone’s heart. Combined with the fact that the phenomenon itself sounds fantastical, like a Golden Finger only a chosen Child of Destiny in a novel would possess, it caused those who heard Zhou Luoluo’s heart to have inflated egos. They subconsciously believed they were unique and never imagined anyone else around them shared the experience.
Under the influence of this chosen one delusion, they naturally felt a protective urge toward the source of the voice, believing a special bond existed between them. Otherwise, why can’t I hear anyone else’s heart, only Zhou Luoluo’s?!
Because of this psychology, Zhou Luoluo had secured the closeness and protection of most of the Li family within days of his return, and he had used his heart voice to make the clumsy Song Le’an suffer many losses. To everyone’s shock, Zhou Luoluo’s heart voice was audible to everyone. They did have a bond, but the bond was a wholesale deal, one for everybody!
In an instant, the bodyguards behind Li Yanzhe, and Li Yanzhe himself, felt like discarded empresses in a cold palace who had just discovered the Emperor’s true heart. If circumstances allowed, they truly wanted to collapse and cry out, “I gave my heart to the wrong person!”
Chu Sicheng looked at Li Yanzhe’s grim expression and added more fuel to the fire with a grin:
“So? Was your Little White Moonlight’s heart voice pleasant to listen to?”
” ”
Li Yanzhe said nothing. To be honest, his current mood was extremely complicated. When he first heard Zhou Luoluo’s heart voice, he had doubted if he was hallucinating from stress. After hearing it more often, he accepted the fact that he could hear it and even felt a bit proud. After all, Zhou Luoluo’s heart was always full of infinite love for him, which was very satisfying for a patronizing CEO.
Li Yanzhe never thought others could hear it too. He didn’t believe anyone else around him was worthy of the title Child of Destiny over him. Moreover, since those words were expressions of love for him, he was convinced it was a secret exclusive to the two of them.
Chu Sicheng’s words were like a full-force slap to the face, leaving his head spinning and his cheeks burning with shame. So everyone could hear. So he wasn’t the exclusive one.
Li Yanzhe’s current feeling was like paying a fortune for a private performance from his favorite idol, only to realize the walls were made of glass and everyone outside was watching for free. Miserable! This was even more miserable for Li Yanzhe than Song Le’an’s betrayal!
When people think only they know something, they call it a secret and believe it implicitly. But if that secret is common knowledge, then its truthfulness requires a careful second look. Furthermore, Zhou Luoluo’s first reaction upon being burned was not the gentle persona he usually displayed, which cast immediate doubt on his heart voices.
Li Yanzhe no longer felt like competing with Shen Ci for Song Le’an. He felt he had been embarrassed enough, both because of Song Le’an and Zhou Luoluo. The group, which had arrived in a grand procession, left in a panicked and disheveled state.
The tactful assistant put the items in the room and left with the bodyguards, leaving the space once again to Shen Ci and Chu Sicheng. Facing the bags that nearly filled the living room, Shen Ci, who was giving gifts for the first time, felt a bit unnatural.
“See if you like those things. If not, I’ll have Assistant Li take you to pick others tomorrow.”
“Since you bought them for me, of course I like them all.”
Chu Sicheng played the role of a canary perfectly. However, facing Shen Ci, who looked normal and didn’t seem affected by Zhou Luoluo’s heart voice, he was still curious.
“Why did you trust me so much just now?” Chu Sicheng leaned in close to Shen Ci. “Weren’t you afraid I was actually the kind of person he described?”
In response to Chu Sicheng’s question, Shen Ci replied indifferently:
“Because he had too many inner thoughts.”
What normal person recaps the entire cause and effect of a situation in their head while apologizing? He looked like he wanted to start the narration from the moment he entered the kitchen; it was clearly meant for an audience. It was just like a White Lotus always having a tool-person nearby to voice their grievances, except Zhou Luoluo’s tool was his own heart voice. Although Shen Ci had never been in a relationship, he had seen many people in the business world. He could see through Zhou Luoluo’s pretentious little tricks at a glance.
“Is that so?”
Chu Sicheng raised his eyebrows and moved even closer to Shen Ci.
“Then”
The boy spoke softly, his beautiful almond eyes staring straight at the man who had put his formal suit back on to leave. His red lips curled slightly, and his smile, while clean, held an indefinable hint of ambiguity. Then, he added slowly:
“Boss, do you want to hear my heart voice right now?”
