- Chapter 4 - Sweet Tale of a Recomposed Family (IV)
Boarding? Sleeping together?
Fang Yuqing’s words echoed in Chi Xia’s mind. Beyond the shock, she found it somewhat humorous.
not out of mockery, but because she marveled at Fang Yuqing’s ability to twist the truth. That single instance back then could hardly be called “boarding”; it was a reluctant necessity at best.
She declined Fang Yuqing’s invitation slowly, saying, “I was a day student in high school. Where would the two of us have found the chance to board together?”
The joyful arch of Fang Yuqing’s brows immediately collapsed. She muttered dissatisfiedly, “It’s only been a few years; how could you forget everything? And here I am, still wondering what perfume you used back then.”
Chi Xia’s lips curled into a nonchalant smile. This expression only strengthened Fang Yuqing’s conviction that she was right. Fang Yuqing sighed dejectedly, grumbling, “It’s not fair. Not fair at all. I know we haven’t been in touch for years, and the reason we fell out seems childish now, but I thought you were like me that you’d firmly remember our time as desk mates. We were comrades who took on the world together! Only I could beat you, and you were the only one who could keep up with me. How could you just forget?”
Chi Xia’s forgetfulness left a bitter taste in Fang Yuqing’s mouth. From the moment they reunited after all these years, Fang Yuqing knew that the “strangeness” she feared didn’t exist. That fierce gaze, that cold and indifferent expression it was the same as it had been years ago; it would likely be that way for a lifetime. Since Chi Xia hadn’t changed, how could Fang Yuqing feel distant?
Her complaints made Chi Xia look askance. Chi Xia knitted her brows helplessly. “I only said one sentence.”
Fang Yuqing puffed out her cheeks, scrubbing the bowls with increased force. “So what if it was one sentence? You still forgot! No wonder you were always the second place who could never surpass me. Just based on memory alone, you’re lacking.”
Hahaha, “lacking”? Hmm? Is she really lacking or just pretending to be, my darling Xiaxia~
Chi Xia gave a light scoff. “Oh.”
“Fine, if you forgot, you forgot. I don’t mind helping you reminisce. There was that one time I wasn’t feeling well, so I applied to stay in the dorm for one night. You were the one staying with me and taking care of me.”
That day, Fang Yuqing had a fever. Her face was flushed red, she was dizzy, and even speaking was a struggle. After seeing the school doctor, the teacher arranged for her to stay in a single dormitory room temporarily. Since Chi Xia was seen by both teachers and students as being very close to Fang Yuqing, she became the designated caregiver. At the time, Chi Xia had looked impatient as she carried plain white porridge and some crisp side dishes from the cafeteria to see her.
The winter night had fallen abruptly. The dormitory was lit by a dim, yellowish light cold, despite the warm hue.
Chi Xia, who had intended to nag Fang Yuqing into eating, found the words dying in her throat when she saw that face, red enough to boil an egg.
That night, it was Fang Yuqing who refused to let go. She had clung to Chi Xia and slept beside her all night. The white porridge and the specially ordered extra-spicy side dishes were left untouched until they turned cold.
Before sleep finally claimed her, Chi Xia had thought secretly: I’ll let her off the hook just this once. I’m not the kind of person to take advantage of someone in a vulnerable state.
Hearing the story, Chi Xia spoke up awkwardly, “Just to be clear, I didn’t ask to be there. The teacher made me do it.”
Sensing that this wouldn’t be enough to stop Fang Yuqing from thinking she was a “good person,” Chi Xia added, “And the dinner I brought you was extra spicy. You were just lucky you didn’t eat it.”
“What?!” Fang Yuqing’s voice jumped an octave. She looked Chi Xia up and down. “You really did hate me! Wait, no… I remember when I woke up the next morning, the dinner you mentioned wasn’t on the table.”
As the realization hit, Fang Yuqing’s expression turned to one of delight. She said mischievously, “You’re so wicked! You clearly remember, yet you’re pretending you forgot everything. Chi Xia, your personality is way too stubborn!”
What else could it be? Xiaxia got hungry in the morning! Hahahaha!
Chi Xia lowered her head and sped up her dishwashing. She untied her apron, organized everything, and promptly left the kitchen.
Fang Yuqing called out hurriedly, “So what perfume were you actually wearing back then?”
“Annoying.”
Chi Xia shot her a glance. “I never wear perfume, especially not back in high school.”
Fang Yuqing’s bright eyes stared directly at her. “Then why was there a scent?”
“Pervert,” Chi Xia spat out the word with a deadpan face.
Hahahahaha! Who would’ve thought the day would come where Xiaxia calls someone else a pervert!
Fang Yuqing was mortified. “Talk like a human being, will you!”
As soon as Chi Xia stepped out, she saw Chi Changhai and Meng Ruyan sitting on the living room sofa. She said, “Dad, Auntie Meng, it’s getting late. I should head back.”
Chi Changhai spoke up, “Why don’t you stay the night?”
She smiled and shook her head. “No, maybe another time. The company has been too busy lately.”
Since it was the first time his daughter had actually responded positively to the idea of staying, Chi Changhai quickly said, “Alright, alright. Come stay for a few days later then. If Xiaxia stays here, what about Qingqing?”
Fang Yuqing looked at her mother’s expression and said playfully, “Then I’ll have to bother Uncle Chi by staying here for a few days.”
“It’s no bother at all. This is your home too.”
In truth, when Chi Changhai first told his daughter about his plans to remarry, he felt awkward and embarrassed. Marrying at his age felt like something his daughter might oppose or mock. But Chi Xia hadn’t made it difficult for him. As she put it, it was his freedom and his right; as his daughter, she saw no reason not to support him. Her only real headache was Meng Ruyan’s daughter, Fang Yuqing.
“Qingqing, go see Xiaxia out.” Meng Ruyan felt she wasn’t familiar enough with Chi Xia yet. Seeing that her daughter seemed closer to her, she let Fang Yuqing handle the farewell.
“Okay, Mom.” Fang Yuqing followed behind Chi Xia. The latter’s silhouette was tall and graceful. What kind of heart was hidden behind that indifferent expression?
Fang Yuqing thought: It must be a very calm and steady heart.
“Careful.”
Suddenly, Chi Xia’s arm appeared in front of Fang Yuqing. Chi Xia caught her just as she tripped on the steps. Their skin brushed against each other. That unforgettable scent wafted into Fang Yuqing’s nose again. She pursed her lips and looked up with a sweet, obedient smile. “Thank you, sister.”
Chi Xia raised an eyebrow. “I regret catching you. I should have let you fall to teach you a lesson, so you’d remember where the threshold is.”
Fang Yuqing replied brightly, “If I fall, I’ll just get back up.”
Chi Xia looked ready to test that. “In that case, want to try tripping again?”
“Hey, that’s mean!”
Chi Xia waved her hand dismissively and turned around with a cool air. “Don’t bother seeing me out further. I’m going.”
“Sister, see you tomorrow!”
Chi Xia muttered to herself, “See you tomorrow? I’m not coming here tomorrow.”
Then what are you doing?
“Helping the male lead relieve some of his financial burden.”
What does that mean?
“Stealing a business deal.”
Wow, Xiaxia is simply too wicked.
“Thanks for the compliment.”
But Xiaxia, don’t play too hard. This is a ‘Sweet Tale’ world, not a ‘Tragedy’ world. Be careful not to anger the Heavens. Our boss warned us: no heavy-handedness. Be gentle…use your fingers to poke around, but don’t strangle~.
“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.”
“Manager Chi, are you really going to decline CEO Yu’s invitation to the gala?”
Sipping her coffee and hearing the regret in her assistant’s voice, Chi Xia said coldly, “Why should I waste time attending a feast that I know is a trap?”
“But… but that’s the Yu Group. They’re the industry leaders. We just snatched a deal from them; isn’t this a bit risky?”
Chi Xia wasn’t in the mood to soothe her assistant’s anxiety. Her previous overtime had resulted in a successful contract with a foreign firm. She was here today to enjoy her coffee, not to listen to her assistant grumble.
In business, there are no permanent friends. The success of her proposal simply proved that her plan was better suited for the foreign firm than the Yu Group’s. Survival of the fittest isn’t just a rule of nature.
“I have friends in the Yu Group. How about I introduce you to a position there?”
“Manager, I… I didn’t mean it like that.” The assistant’s face flushed. She admired Chi Xia, but she felt Chi Xia was moving too fast and was genuinely worried for her.
Chi Xia set down her cup. “I want to rest.”
The assistant nervously fidgeted with her fingers, nodded to Chi Xia, and walked out.
Once the door closed and the office fell silent, Chi Xia mused quietly, “Today is the reunion between Fang Yuqing and Yu She. If I went, wouldn’t I be ruining the atmosphere?”
Why would a “villainess” want to watch the hero and heroine reunite? She had no intention of being a third wheel.
Xiaxia, let’s play a game together online!
“Busy.”
Waaaah, you heartless woman!
The system’s loud, fake crying made Chi Xia speechless. What had she done to deserve such an unreliable system?
“Shut up.”
Scold me more, Xiaxia! I love it!
Chi Xia’s lip twitched as she returned to her coffee in silence.
Meanwhile, Fang Yuqing had already encountered Yu She. He was staring at her with intense emotion.
Uncomfortable, Fang Yuqing frowned. “Sir… you’ve been standing there staring at me for several minutes. Is something the matter?”
“Hello, I am Yu She.” The man’s handsome features didn’t trigger a single memory, so Fang Yuqing replied politely, “Hello, I am Fang Yuqing.”
“Miss Fang, I wonder if I might have the honor of taking you to dinner tonight?” He was bold and passionate, his heart thumping wildly against his ribs. Despite his nerves, Yu She summoned the courage to invite her.
Because he was no longer the poor boy he used to be.
“I’m sorry, but tonight I have to listen to my mother and go tell my sister to come home for dinner.”
She nodded sincerely. She wasn’t lying; every word was the truth!
