- Chapter 22.1 - Sweet Story About a Recomposed Family
Fang Yuqing, hidden beneath the covers, wanted to fake being asleep to muddle her way through. She didn’t want the person entering the room to discover the fact that she was already awake. Yet, deep in her heart, there was a tiny shred of anticipation, as if she were harboring a lively rabbit bouncing all over the place. She covered her own mouth and listened intently to the sound of that person’s footsteps.
One step, then another.
They seemed to walk right up to the edge of the bed.
Fang Yuqing wanted to know what her next move would be, but separated by a layer of the quilt, no matter how sharp her ears were, she couldn’t hear very clearly. That person paused for a moment, causing Fang Yuqing’s heart to hang high in mid-air. She didn’t know what exactly she was so nervous about. Had she really done so few socially mortifying things in front of Chi Xia? She could completely fluff up her nerve, fling back the covers, and give her a good scare ideally letting Chi Xia witness just how terrifying she could be.
She had planned out so many steps; all that was missing was the actual execution.
However, Fang Yuqing didn’t move an inch. The hand covering her mouth gradually drifted to touch her cheek. It felt hot to the touch. She was blushing out of sheer shyness. No matter how much Fang Yuqing deceived herself, she could never forget the image of herself holding Chi Xia’s hand and sucking that drop of water from it. Nor could she forget the way Chi Xia’s face had suddenly flushed crimson. Even though Chi Xia had later glared at her in a fit of rage, that glare was still like silk thread wrapped around a bewitching eye radiant, captivating, and full of seductive charm.
“I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die!”
She curled herself into a tight ball, wanting to block out the images that shouldn’t be appearing, but Fang Yuqing couldn’t do it.
The door creaked again the sound of it closing.
Just as Fang Yuqing was agonizing so hard her eyebrows were practically knotting together, the person who had entered the room came and went. Stunned, she quickly poked her head out from the blankets. Staring in the direction of the bedroom door, Fang Yuqing said in a lost, crestfallen voice, “She… she just left like that?”
Every person’s walk produces a distinct footstep. Through her careful discernment, Fang Yuqing had guessed that the person pushing open the door was Chi Xia. What she didn’t realize was that when she, hiding under the covers, figured out it was Chi Xia’s footsteps, the smile on her face was incredibly brilliant. Even her eyes held a timid nervousness, a bit like a Ragdoll cat waiting for its master to return home, just short of excitedly letting out a “meow, meow.”
So while she was playing hide-and-seek under the blankets, Chi Xia didn’t linger for long, departing without taking a single cloud with her. This caused the emotionally volatile Fang Yuqing to taste the bitterness of disappointment.
Dejectedly, she extended her leg and kicked the quilt. “What’s the deal? Coming and going like that, do you think my room is an exhibition hall!”
While Fang Yuqing was complaining about Chi Xia, her peripheral vision caught sight of the phone resting on the nightstand. Only then did she notice that the sticky note attached to the phone had been replaced with new content.
I accompanied you to drink away your sorrows once. Remember to agree to do one thing for me after I return next week.
Such a domineering tone that brooked no refusal one look and you knew exactly who had left that sticky note.
Fang Yuqing’s brain short-circuited a bit. After reading it over a few times, she didn’t even bother to put on her slippers before pushing the door open and running out.
The faint, delicious aroma of breakfast filled the living room. Chi Changhai and Meng Ruyan were busy working away in the kitchen. Fang Yuqing could hear what her family was talking about, and everything seemed entirely unchanged. But when she looked toward a certain spot at the dining table, Chi Xia’s figure was nowhere to be seen as it usually was, and there was one less set of bowls and chopsticks laid out.
Fang Yuqing called out, “Mom, where’s Sister?”
Meng Ruyan poked her head out from the doorway and teased, “Waking up quite early today, aren’t we? I thought you’d sleep until noon after drinking a bit of alcohol yesterday. Xiaxia went on a business trip. She picked up a phone call around seven o’clock, and it seemed like a highly urgent situation. She didn’t even pack her suitcase before heading straight out the door.”
Fang Yuqing looked down at her own toes and said listlessly, “On a business trip.”
Why did she have to go on a business trip today of all days?
Originally, she had been worrying about whether it would be very awkward when they met, and whether she would need to avoid her. Who would have guessed that she had gone on a business trip?
The embarrassing shyness vanished completely, replaced by a sudden emptiness in her chest, as if something were missing.
“Mom, Uncle Chi, I don’t want to eat breakfast anymore.”
Meng Ruyan looked helplessly at Fang Yuqing throwing a tantrum and nagged, “Eat a little. Xiaxia said you drank alcohol yesterday, and if you have an empty stomach in the morning, you’ll definitely feel miserable.”
“Mommy, I don’t want to eat. I want to go back and keep sleeping.”
Meng Ruyan could do nothing with her, so she scolded with a laugh, “Sooner or later you’ll be the one suffering. If only Xiaxia were here; that child can manage you with just a few words. It really is strange, I suppose it’s a case of one thing conquering another.”
Chi Changhai gently nudged his wife to let her go rest in the living room. No one was more familiar or understood this kitchen setup better than him. He said with a smile, “This just shows that the two kids have a great relationship. Having Qingqing accompany her actually sets my mind at ease. She didn’t inherit a single bit of my personality. Sometimes I even fret over what Xiaxia will do in the future with such a small social circle. Now it’s wonderful; she has Qingqing. They are friends and sisters, and no one can surpass the two of them.”
Recalling Chi Xia’s personality, Fang Yuqing couldn’t help but feel amused. Logically speaking, Chi Xia wouldn’t change her personality just because her circle was small; she was used to doing things alone. Even without friends, Chi Xia could live leisurely and comfortably. Come to think of it, it seemed she herself was the one causing trouble for her more often.
She had bitten her back in high school during a fight and spoken words of estrangement, and it wasn’t until the two of them reunited and talked things through that she realized she had misunderstood Chi Xia. Not to look too far back, just take yesterday she had used being drunk to act wild and take advantage of her. Thinking carefully, she really was incredibly immature.
She returned to her room and picked up that sticky note once more.
Looking at the handwriting on it, Fang Yuqing could entirely visualize how Chi Xia had tiptoed into the room earlier to swap the sticky notes. It must have been incredibly amusing and cute.
She collapsed onto the bed and began to laugh, saying, “It really wasn’t easy for her either. A sudden phone call disrupted Chi Xia’s plans, so she had no choice but to stealthily swap it out and stick a new one on.”
“Pfft, so obedient.”
No wonder she hadn’t stayed long in the room; turns out she had come to swap the sticky note.
Fang Yuqing rolled over, propping her chin in her hands as she carefully smoothed out the sticky note, murmuring to herself, “A business trip for a whole week, that’s so long.”
If only she were a rich woman, she would open a company just to let Chi Xia squander money, and things like business trips wouldn’t exist at all.
Wait, wait, wait, this didn’t seem quite right.
It sounded a bit like… like keeping a mistress!
How could she have such an outrageous thought! If Chi Xia found out, she would definitely kill her.
But if she didn’t say it, how would she know?
Fang Yuqing’s eyes curved up, sly and nimble. She tapped the sticky note and said haughtily, “I’ll just wait and see what kind of thing you want me to do. If it’s the kind that bullies me, don’t blame me for being unpolite!”
She wrapped herself in the quilt, resting her head on the pillow. Since she didn’t have to go to work today, she would treat herself to a luxurious sleep.
Just as Fang Yuqing closed her eyes, her hand reached out to grope for that sticky note. Once she got it in her hand, she slapped it right onto her forehead with a “smack.” She didn’t forget to mutter, “Am I actually pretty important? Chi Xia didn’t even bother to grab her suitcase, yet as rushed for time as she was, she still had the mind to come change the sticky note.”
“Hehehehe, I’m so happy.”
Therefore, this sticky note was entirely worthy of being pasted on her forehead!
However, such thoughts dissipated once Fang Yuqing woke up again and looked in the mirror. She stared flabbergasted at herself in the mirror, hurriedly peeling off the sticky note. She smiled bitterly and said, “If I knew, I wouldn’t have pasted it. It’s become all wrinkled up.”
After thinking for a moment, Fang Yuqing retrieved a book from the bookshelf, flattened the sticky note, and pressed it inside. With the thick book weighting it down, it should be able to flatten out, right?
A smile surfaced on her lips as she said, “Hope she comes home early.”
With Chi Xia missing from the house, it always made one feel rather unaccustomed.
Seeing that she had accidentally brought out an extra set of bowls and chopsticks again, Meng Ruyan said to Fang Yuqing, “I wonder what urgent matter came up at Xiaxia’s company that requires her to be away on a business trip for so many days.”
Biting her chopstick, Fang Yuqing explained, “It should be a very thorny problem. Under normal circumstances, someone else would have handled it already. Calling her to go now implies the issue is not small.”
“Sigh, yeah. She only ate a slice of toast this morning. I wonder if that child will be so busy that she won’t even have time for a meal by now.”
Fang Yuqing knew Chi Xia was a workaholic. When she got busy, her brain only remembered official business, entirely unable to recall personal matters. So hearing Meng Ruyan’s words, she also grew a bit worried.
She pulled out her phone and took a glance. Chi Xia still hadn’t replied. Helplessly, she let her head droop; she just possessed a worrying disposition.
Fang Yuqing couldn’t help but send another message. Who knew when Chi Xia would finally notice the activity on her phone.
It’s noon, remember to eat. You can’t skip three meals a day. If you dare not to eat, watch out or I’ll go back on my word and refuse to agree to your request!
Although she still didn’t know what Chi Xia wanted her to agree to, it didn’t hinder Fang Yuqing from using it to threaten Chi Xia at all.
She snickered mischievously, wearing a look of sheer smugness.
“Qingqing, tomorrow I might come back a bit late in the evening. Just go straight to your Uncle Chi’s place to eat.”
Before Fang Yuqing could enjoy her happiness for long, her teeth accidentally bit down hard, injuring her tongue. She took a sharp breath of pain, waiting for a moment before speaking, “Going shopping with a friend?”
Meng Ruyan was perfectly composed, showing not a single trace of abnormality. If Fang Yuqing hadn’t overheard that conversation, perhaps she wouldn’t have suspected Meng Ruyan’s whereabouts. But she had heard it; she knew who Meng Ruyan was going to see.
