- Chapter 18 - Sweet Story of a Recomposed Family
That recent accident caused Fang Yuqing’s face to flush a violent red. She remained rooted to the spot as if someone had cast a freezing spell on her, until finally, Chi Xia pinched the scruff of her neck, forcing Fang Yuqing to finally look her in the eye.
“You’re hurting me, Sister.”
When it’s time to yield, one must yield. If she didn’t act spoiled now, she wouldn’t be Fang Yuqing.
Years of experience in society had taught Fang Yuqing to be tactful; she understood that a soft, gentle strike was often the most powerful. Some grudges aren’t ignored, they just wait for the right moment. She had developed enough patience to smile at colleagues who set traps for her at work, so how could she not handle the woman standing before her the one who had fallen just to catch her?
Fang Yuqing didn’t want to bicker with Chi Xia anymore. She knew she had been in the wrong previously; she had been so overjoyed by the change in Chi Xia’s attitude toward her that she had lost her sense of propriety and provoked her.
Now that Chi Xia was willing to open the door and see her, Fang Yuqing knew this was a turning point. How could she be willing to let such an opportunity slip through her fingers?
Fang Yuqing’s current thoughts were far from composed. The flush on her face betrayed her inner turmoil. An unexpected accident like this was something neither she nor Chi Xia could have anticipated.
Her legs were pressed against the plush carpet, the texture was excellent, but it was nothing compared to the sensation Chi Xia provided. It was a warmth and softness that felt like sinking into a cloud of cotton. Even though she was a woman herself, she had never experienced this kind of tactile sensation on her own body.
Fang Yuqing couldn’t help but twitch her fingers, applying a bit of pressure. Her body moved faster than her brain, and by the time she realized what a hornet’s nest she had stirred, she wished she could arch her back like a cat and puff out her fur.
“I… I just wanted to find a point of leverage so I could sit up! It’s absolutely not what you think, Sister! Really, believe me! You have to believe me!”
If looks could kill, Fang Yuqing would have probably died seven or eight times over by now.
Chi Xia pinched the scruff of Fang Yuqing’s neck again and chuckled softly, “A point of leverage?”
Fang Yuqing nodded frantically. She wanted to sit up, but Chi Xia’s hand was still behind her, controlling her movements. Even if Fang Yuqing wanted to do something else, it would be difficult to succeed.
The lingering itch left by Fang Yuqing still remained on Chi Xia’s body. This strange sensation made her feel entirely uncomfortable. She tried her best to force herself to forget it, but sometimes the human brain likes to work against itself; far from forgetting, the moment seemed to replay in her mind over and over.
She looked into Fang Yuqing’s eyes, which seemed to hold fragments of soft spring light clear, gentle, and not at all piercing.
Chi Xia was a person with a complex mind. She had never liked people who were too honest or simple, as they made her feel even more sordid by comparison. However, right now, she was extremely grateful for Fang Yuqing’s transparency. Because of this, she could easily read Fang Yuqing’s emotions. Chi Xia could see the intimacy and intent in her eyes. Chi Xia couldn’t help but feel a bit smug, but she also felt a sense of relief at least the girl didn’t mind the harsh words she had said earlier.
Just as Chi Xia began to relax, she was startled by the sudden thought that had popped into her head.
Why is this happening? Why am I afraid of her minding? This isn’t our first fight; is this really necessary?
Chi Xia was lost in thought. Fang Yuqing, who was waiting for a lecture, saw her staring blankly. Fang Yuqing secretly moved her arm, which was braced against the carpet; it was starting to feel sore. She really wanted to just collapse and lie flat, but she feared she’d be scolded. Fine, she would hold out a bit longer.
She gritted her teeth and persevered, taking the opportunity to look elsewhere.
She noticed the tiny mole on the tip of the nose she remembered so well, and the perfect figure draped in a camisole nightgown.
The woman was beautiful in every way. Lying on the carpet with her hair spread out, she looked like a gorgeous rose inviting someone to pluck it. But Fang Yuqing knew very well how sharp this flower’s thorns were one prick and you’d bleed.
But so what?
It was precisely because the challenge was “Hell-mode” that it fueled the greed in people’s hearts, wasn’t it?
That open outer garment, the strap slipping from her shoulder, and that…
Fang Yuqing’s vision was suddenly blocked by a palm. Chi Xia pushed her away, covered her chest with one hand, and sat up. Chi Xia’s eyes were murderous as she snapped, “What are you looking at?”
“Looking for a point of leverage.”
Chi Xia raised her hand and gave her a swat on the back of the head, cursing, “Indecent! Get out of my room!”
Fang Yuqing clutched her head and curled her body. She bit her lip pitiably, putting on a heartbreaking display of vulnerability. She asked tentatively, “You… you’re not mad at me anymore, right?”
Chi Xia replied in a sarcastic tone, “How would I dare? What if you analyze me and see through me again? I’d lose so much face. It’s a pity you aren’t a psychiatrist; otherwise, I’d definitely have you treat my illness.”
Fang Yuqing murmured, “Treat your illness?”
“Yes, I’m mentally ill and desperately need a doctor’s care.”
Hearing her speak in anger, Fang Yuqing lowered her head and giggled, her shoulders shaking.
She suddenly realized that this fight didn’t carry the heavy smoke of war, nor was it even slightly hostile. It was significantly different from their past arguments.
In the past, they fought to win an argument, to see who came out on top.
But now… winning or losing didn’t seem important. All that mattered was that the other person cooled off quickly.
Fang Yuqing’s eyes sparkled with life. She leaned forward and said, “Goodnight, Sister.” Having finished her sentence, she daringly patted Chi Xia’s hair like plucking a whisker from a tiger and fled the room so fast there were no words to describe it.
Chi Xia stood frozen for a moment. Then, her lips curled into a smile as she whispered, “Lucky you ran fast, otherwise…”
Otherwise, I’d have given you a piece of my mind.
Having just teased Chi Xia, Fang Yuqing was in a wonderful mood. However, considering how late it was, she walked with light footsteps. She had spoken so much with Chi Xia and gone through such an emotional rollercoaster that she now felt thirsty and hungry, so she decided to grab some food.
To get to the kitchen, she inevitably had to pass by Meng Ruyan’s room. Fang Yuqing was surprised to see the lights still on, as Meng Ruyan rarely stayed up this late.
She didn’t think much of it and headed for the kitchen, but then she heard the sound of someone speaking. She listened closely and realized it was Meng Ruyan on the phone. She had intended to tip-toe in, grab some snacks, and leave, but the words she heard next made her freeze in her tracks.
“Do you really not want to come and see Qingqing? You haven’t seen her in over twenty years, right? What? You saw her when she was in high school? Sigh, actually, I was thinking of taking Qingqing to see you that year. Fine, fine, I won’t bring it up. How are you now? How is your health? When Old Chi comes back the day after tomorrow, let’s meet and talk. I have so much to tell you.”
Meng Ruyan was sitting on a bar stool, her expression gentle and her eyes filled with nostalgia. It was clear the person she was talking to was someone she trusted deeply.
Fang Yuqing pulled her foot back and moved away inch by inch, not daring to make a sound.
For some reason, Meng Ruyan’s words made Fang Yuqing’s heart race it was a frantic, oppressive feeling, as if she were tightly wrapped in a thin film, making even breathing a luxury.
Her mother’s words made Fang Yuqing sensitively recall how, as a child, the children of certain relatives would point and whisper at her. It had made Fang Yuqing cry, and the usually good-tempered Meng Ruyan couldn’t stand it; she had taken Fang Yuqing to that relative’s house and flipped their table, turning their New Year’s Day into a literal “shattering” experience.
Fang Yuqing thought she would be like other children and have no clear memory of her early childhood, but upon hearing those vague words, she uncontrollably remembered that childhood experience.
She didn’t actually know what those words meant or what the context was.
But her intuition told her she wasn’t wrong.
Fang Yuqing felt despondent, her face pale as she returned to her room.
Thinking back on certain things now, there were indeed suspicious points.
The high school where Fang Yuqing had been a guest student wouldn’t have let her in simply because her grades were good. Without connections, who would let you casually enter one of the best local high schools?
Fang Yuqing didn’t dare think any deeper. She forced herself to stop, curling up on her bed with her mind in a mess.
A whim to knock on Chi Xia’s door had led to her staying up late, which in turn led to her accidentally witnessing Meng Ruyan’s phone call.
The plot was gradually deviating, like grains of sand buried in the earth. If it weren’t for that gust of wind, who would have guessed there were grains of sand hidden there?
The next day, Meng Ruyan had already prepared breakfast. She wiped her hands and said to Chi Xia, “Xiaxia, I have the soy milk you like today. Have some breakfast before you leave.”
Usually, Chi Xia just grabbed something outside, but today she nodded and smiled at Meng Ruyan’s words, “Thank you, Auntie Meng.”
“What’s with Qingqing? It’s so late and she still hasn’t made a sound.”
Chi Xia replied, “Probably because she went to bed a bit late yesterday.”
Meng Ruyan asked curiously, “How do you know?”
Chi Xia’s eyes flickered, her expression stiffening slightly. “I happened to see that her light wasn’t out yet, so she must have slept late. How about this, Auntie Meng, I’ll go check on her while you finish up.”
Worried that Meng Ruyan would keep questioning her, Chi Xia brought up Fang Yuqing and successfully escaped from her sight.
Meng Ruyan chuckled and shook her head. “Everything feels a bit strange. I didn’t even ask much.”
Chi Xia stood at the door, her eyelashes lowered, the corners of her eyes tilted upward, her gaze hazy and soulful.
Should I knock on this door? Whether the person inside is awake or not, I don’t actually care, right?
She could have used many excuses to avoid answering Auntie Meng; why did she specifically use one related to Fang Yuqing?
Just as she was lost in thought, the bedroom door opened on its own.
Chi Xia had intended to coldly tell her to eat breakfast, but to her surprise, the usually sweetly smiling Fang Yuqing had eyes so swollen they were unrecognizable.
She had never seen Fang Yuqing like this before, and her heart twinged for no reason.
“Who upset you?”
Who stole my role as the villain? Are they looking for trouble?
