- Chapter 16 - Sweet Story About a Reconstituted Family
The two of them returned home on the evening summer breeze, stepping through the bright moonlight. As soon as they entered the door, they heard Meng Ruyan’s voice. She looked at the children’s return with joy and hurriedly stood up, her previous look of loneliness already gone.
“Qingqing, Xiaxia, why did you two come back together so suddenly? Didn’t you say you weren’t eating dinner at home tonight?”
Meng Ruyan had finally decided to cook a delicious meal for the children, but Fang Yuqing and Yu Yao had an appointment to eat together, and Chi Xia had gone out again after seeing that Fang Yuqing wasn’t home. One by one, the family reunion for the evening had scattered. Fortunately, both Chi Xia and Fang Yuqing were sensible people; they had called Meng Ruyan in advance to tell her not to bother cooking too much food, so she had simply made some porridge to make do for dinner.
She had suffered a lot in her youth. Her parents’ preference for sons over daughters had pressed down on her until she could hardly breathe. This was also why Meng Ruyan insisted on processing the school transfer for her daughter even when she had to travel for work; without her own eyes on the situation, she truly feared that those muddled parents would do something else.
Meng Ruyan took the takeout containers from Chi Xia’s hands and said with heartache, “The food from this place isn’t cheap. Didn’t Xiaxia and Qingqing go out for something today? I was worried the two of you would come back too late.”
Fang Yuqing helped Chi Xia set things up. Hearing Meng Ruyan’s nagging, she leaned out from behind Meng Ruyan and locked eyes with Chi Xia. She gave Chi Xia a sweet smile, her lips parting slightly to wordlessly say a phrase Thank you.
The lights in the living room were bright. Chi Xia quickly turned around and went to the kitchen to get bowls and chopsticks, but that fleeting moment of flushing red in the face and ears was seen clearly by Fang Yuqing.
Fang Yuqing stared at her figure until she was out of sight.
Wasn’t it just a ‘thank you’ for remembering to care about Mom at home? Why did she get shy again?
Suddenly, she felt a tap on her back. Meng Ruyan pinched her cheek and muttered in a low voice, “Was it your craving that made Xiaxia spend so much money?”
Fang Yuqing immediately cried out that she was wronged. “Mom, this really wasn’t my idea. Sister made us buy it. I can’t win against her temper, so I just did whatever she said. She cares about you; she knew that if no one was home, you would neglect yourself. Now that Sister and I are home early it’s not even eight o’clock we can actually have a meal together.”
This was indeed Chi Xia’s thought. She saw how well Meng Ruyan treated her. Furthermore, since they had talked about making specialty dishes in the morning and Chi Xia hadn’t been able to stay home because she was in a hurry to find Fang Yuqing, she thought about it and drove to pre-order the meal.
A warm current rose in Meng Ruyan’s heart, and she released her grip on Fang Yuqing. “How did you and Xiaxia run into each other?”
“She went to find me. How about it? Your daughter’s face is quite influential, isn’t it?”
Meng Ruyan couldn’t help but laugh. She glanced toward the kitchen and lowered her voice, saying, “I asked Xiaxia today what exactly is the deal with your rooms? Each of you has a different story. You said you wanted to switch, but then Xiaxia told me it was her idea and told me not to blame you. You two have really grown up; Mom can’t keep up with your rhythm anymore.”
“Mom! Didn’t we say this matter was already handled? Why did you go and talk to Sister about it again!” A flash of inspiration hit Fang Yuqing. She finally understood the reason for Chi Xia’s proactive phone call today. Could it be because of this?
Meng Ruyan said in confusion, “I was just afraid Xiaxia would be treated unfairly. Our family situation is special. If I don’t pay attention and you two end up having a disagreement, Old Chi and I would be worried to death.”
“Mom, Chi Xia and I won’t have a falling out,” she said decisively, patting her chest.
Meng Ruyan shook her head and hit the nail on the head. “I don’t believe it. Don’t think I don’t know about the time you two had a falling out in high school. For a long time, I didn’t hear you mention Xiaxia at all. I knew something must have happened between you two.”
After being exposed by her mother, Fang Yuqing wrinkled her nose in embarrassment. “Oh, that’s all in the past. We’ve made up now, and our relationship is especially good. I super-duper like this sister-and-friend, Chi Xia!”
“That’s good, that’s good. You are both adults. There are ways to solve everything; there’s no need to use a quarrel to end this relationship.”
After Meng Ruyan finished her nagging, she began to busy herself with the takeout dishes, unwrapping the packaging one by one.
Fang Yuqing turned around with a smile and saw Chi Xia standing dazed at the kitchen door holding bowls and chopsticks. She ran over, and seeing Chi Xia’s eyes following her, she couldn’t help but laugh, “You look so silly like this, like the Golden Retriever next door. Hahaha.”
Chi Xia pursed her lips, withdrew her gaze, gave a cold snort, and bumped her shoulder against Fang Yuqing’s to move her out of the way.
Pfft, you’re flustered, you’re flustered.
“She said I’m a puppy.”
She’s complimenting you.
Chi Xia nearly had a heart attack from anger. No matter how Fang Yuqing tried to tease her, Chi Xia looked straight ahead as she arranged the dishes, looking cold and dignified like an elegant and noble white swan.
But even so, Fang Yuqing discovered that her favorite dish had been placed right by her hand. She looked at the figure busying herself back and forth, reached out, and hugged Chi Xia around the waist, burying her face against her side and nuzzling her. She said, “Sister is so good.”
She had never lacked happiness growing up. Although some of her relatives were eccentric or extreme, Fang Yuqing believed she had the best mother in the world. She never thought a single-parent family was a bad thing and didn’t understand why people thought children from single-parent homes had psychological issues. No one is perfect, and there was no need to paint all single-parent families with the same brush. She respected and adored her mother, feeling grateful for her years of sacrifice. Therefore, upon hearing the news that her mother wanted to remarry, Fang Yuqing was very happy because she knew there were more people in the world to love and protect her mother. How could she protest her mother’s remarriage?
Now she had an Uncle Chi, and…
Fang Yuqing looked up and gazed at Chi Xia. And there was also this sister before her who was not good at expressing herself.
It didn’t matter; it was fine if she wasn’t good at expressing herself, because she could manage to say all the gratitude in her heart out loud. What Chi Xia couldn’t do, she would be there to complement her.
Fang Yuqing quickly withdrew her hands before Chi Xia could get angry, and she even smoothed out the clothes she had wrinkled with her hug, looking quite apologetic.
Chi Xia couldn’t even let her anger out. She shot Fang Yuqing a glance and walked a few extra steps to choose a seat as far away from her as possible.
“Stingy. It was just a hug. I’m not some fierce beast; why run so far?”
Chi Xia said sarcastically, “A hug isn’t enough? What else do you want to do?”
Fang Yuqing puffed out her cheeks; she dared to think it, but the key was that she didn’t dare to say it out loud.
Meng Ruyan watched the two of them bickering with a smile. She put a chicken wing on each of their plates and said, “Time to eat.”
A meal is most satisfying when eaten with family.
Chi Xia lowered her head and smiled faintly. Although this world constantly made her feel incredulous, this must be the charm of a “Sweet Story” world. It was no wonder it raised a woman with a personality like Fang Yuqing’s.
Time flowed, and in the blink of an eye, it was time to sleep.
However, someone knocked on the bedroom door. Chi Xia’s hand, which was changing into pajamas, paused. She looked at the slip nightgown she was wearing and casually grabbed an outer wrap before opening the door.
Fang Yuqing, who was leaning against the doorframe, gave a light whistle, but she didn’t actually make a sound, which greatly undercut her attempt to tease Chi Xia about her figure.
“Uh, that’s a bit awkward.”
Chi Xia turned slightly and crossed her arms to block that prying gaze. However, she didn’t realize that by propping up her arms, she only allowed Fang Yuqing to see more of the fair skin she shouldn’t be looking at. She said calmly, “Look again and I’ll gouge your eyes out.”
“So fierce.”
“It’s 11:30 PM. Coming over to knock on the door already counts as a public nuisance. You should be grateful that I can even open the door to listen to your nonsense.”
Chi Xia’s words were clearly tinged with irritation. Fang Yuqing suppressed a smile. “What are you doing? Are you still mad at me? You can be angry, but at least tell me the reason.”
She rolled her charming peach-blossom eyes at Fang Yuqing. With a single glance, she could easily make someone’s waist feel weak. Fang Yuqing immediately changed her tune and said righteously, “You have successfully convinced me with your beauty, so feel free to be angry, I’m okay with it!”
“Talk about the business at hand.” She feigned a yawn. As someone who understood Chi Xia’s routine, Fang Yuqing knew she was acting, but considering Chi Xia’s temper, Fang Yuqing still explained herself. She said, “My mom talked to you about the room situation?”
“Yes.”
Fang Yuqing asked again, “You told my mom it was your idea?”
Chi Xia said impatiently, “Don’t you already know? Why are you asking me?”
“Chi Xia, when you told Mom the truth, what were you thinking? Was it that you didn’t want to owe me at all, or was it that you were worried Mom would really scold me, so you told her the truth?” Fang Yuqing had been lying in bed unable to sleep, tossing and turning. Even the dinosaur plushie she usually held while sleeping had been tormented by her. After thinking it over, she came to knock on Chi Xia’s door.
She had a great virtue: if she didn’t understand a question, she would ask; if she encountered something, she dared to speak up. Fang Yuqing didn’t like to speculate; if she didn’t get a clear answer, she probably wouldn’t be able to sleep.
Because of this personality, when she heard Chi Xia clarifying things with a classmate years ago, she had dragged Chi Xia out of the classroom. she had to hear Chi Xia’s explanation whether it was the same as what she thought. Unfortunately, things hadn’t gone as she wished.
“I am an upright person. If I did something, I will naturally admit to it.” Chi Xia’s gaze was calm and her speech was casual, as if she didn’t care at all about Fang Yuqing’s question.
But Fang Yuqing took a step forward and grabbed her outer wrap, determined not to let Chi Xia retreat a single step. Fang Yuqing locked eyes with her and saw for herself that Chi Xia’s expression had changed; it was no longer so static. She curled her lips into a provocative smile and said, “You are avoiding my question again. Chi Xia, I won’t be like I was back then I won’t fall into your trap of evading the main point.”
“If you’re escaping, it means you have a guilty conscience.”
“So I can be very sure you were worried I would be scolded by Mom, right?”
Fang Yuqing let go of her hand and said triumphantly, “Just because you’re a year older than me doesn’t mean you can always fool me.”
“This time, I win.”
