- When the Possessive Omega Fell for Me
- Chapter 73.1 - From Now On, Yi Jing and Yu Miao Are Both Free
Yi Jing and Xiao Yan made a discreet trip to a Western European territory and returned the same day.
This time, Yi Jing acted with extreme caution. Thanks to Yu Miao’s meticulous preparations and the cooperation of Hubert and Qi Xiao, hardly anyone from the Yi family to the judicial system noticed the trip, and the Yi family took no action. However, shortly after Yi Jing and Xiao Yan visited the Western European territory, the authorities intensified their crackdown on the massive interest group centered around the Yi family, which had been entrenched in Jing’an City for years.
A series of reports completely drew the authorities’ attention to the Yi family. Every minor movement related to them now triggered scrutiny from higher-ups.
In the face of law and authority, all tricks and manipulations became meaningless.
The authorities took the matter seriously. Any report involving the Yi family immediately prompted an investigation. Many core businesses of the Zhao and Yi families were suspended as a result, not to mention the Xie and Lei families, one had all its factories and industrial parks inspected, nearly to the point of complete shutdown, while the other fared slightly better but still saw most of its operations halted, with various business permits temporarily revoked.
The situation grew increasingly dire. Not only did the family heads in power sense something was wrong, but even the members dependent on these families for survival began to notice the shift. Those who could find a way started scrambling to save themselves, doing everything possible to transfer assets.
Yet they didn’t dare act too brazenly, quietly carrying out these moves behind Yi Laozi’s back. The Yi family estate grew eerily desolate. Even though its residents remained, the atmosphere was nothing like before.
As Yi Jing observed the estate, she thought it might be time for her to move out as well.
Recently, the Yi family had also come under investigation. As a member of the family, Yi Jing should naturally avoid any conflict of interest. Moreover, she had grown tired of seeing these people put on forced smiles in public while scheming in private. So when the authorities sent her a second notice to cooperate with the investigation, she took Yu Miao and moved out, settling into an apartment not far from the supervisory office.
Seizing the opportunity before leaving, Yi Jing visited the hidden control center beneath the Yi family garden, where the estate’s entire security system was managed. Normally, the area was heavily guarded, but with the Yi family in disarray, no one paid attention to such minor details. Given Yi Jing’s high clearance within the family, she easily infiltrated the center, stole a security module that could function as a universal key, and erased any record of her visit.
With this in hand, she had an extra layer of preparation in case unconventional measures became necessary.
The new apartment she shared with Yu Miao was far smaller than their residence in the estate less than half the size of Yu Miao’s previous quarters. The only advantage was the floor-to-ceiling window in the living room, offering an unobstructed view from the high floor.
Worried that Yu Miao might feel uncomfortable, Yi Jing sidled up to her like a clingy puppy, nuzzling her affectionately while cooing, “Sis, what are you looking at?”
Yu Miao withdrew her gaze and glanced at the little alpha clinging to her with a pout, unable to suppress a smile as she asked, “Why are you being so clingy all of a sudden?”
“I’m not clingy! I’ve always been like this,” Yi Jing muttered while hugging Yu Miao tighter.
Yu Miao chuckled softly, “You are clingy, you’re like an affectionate little puppy.”
“Tch,” Yi Jing made a small sound of protest but continued mumbling, “But you still like me this way. You love how clingy I am.”
Yu Miao finally burst into laughter, turning slightly to cup Yi Jing’s face. “What’s really on your mind? I feel like you have something to say.”
“It’s nothing much…” Yi Jing buried her face back into Yu Miao’s shoulder, nuzzling against her, both amazed by Yu Miao’s perceptiveness and happy that she noticed her mood. But thinking about what was bothering her, Yi Jing couldn’t help but frown.
“It’s just, are you comfortable living here, sis?” Yi Jing tilted her head to look at Yu Miao, concern evident in her voice. “Back at the Yi family, the place was much bigger than this.”
Yu Miao smiled gently. “So that’s what you’re worried about.”
“Yeah,” Yi Jing sighed. “Before, I could spend so freely because the Yi family backed me. Their money just sat there if I didn’t use it. But now that we’ve left, we have to rely on ourselves. My salary alone is pretty meager, we definitely won’t be living like before.”
“My poor baby,” Yu Miao teased, cupping Yi Jing’s face, amused by her genuine worry. “Did you really think I’d miss that kind of environment?”
“Huh?” Yi Jing blinked in confusion, lifting her gaze to meet Yu Miao’s.
Most people would choose comfort, right? The Yi family might have been ruthless and inhumane, but when it came to luxury, even Yi Jing had to admit their extravaganceas if they truly believed they were old-money aristocrats, indulging in every refined pleasure.
Yu Miao chuckled, squeezing Yi Jing’s cheeks between her hands.
Every time Yi Jing looked at her with that puzzled, earnest expression, Yu Miao couldn’t help but think she resembled a little animal.
“Do you really think I was born privileged, breezing through life without effort to become a top journalist?” Yu Miao said with a smile. “I’ve probably endured more hardships than you can imagine.”
Yi Jing froze, momentarily stunned.
She had never considered Yu Miao’s background before. From the moment they met, Yu Miao had been that dazzling, unforgettable presence never flaunting luxury, yet her cool, ethereal aura made it impossible to associate her with suffering.
Yu Miao’s eyes curved into crescents as she spoke about the past, as if it no longer mattered. “I moved out and lived alone at sixteen, with only a pitiful amount of savings. I’ve stayed in leaky basements and rented cramped rooms shared by four or five people, where even meals had to be carefully budgeted, afraid there wouldn’t be enough for the next one.”
I’ve seen plenty of terrible situations. Before this, I didn’t even have much choice in where to live, just having a roof over my head was good enough. It wasn’t until two years ago when I gradually achieved some career success that things slowly improved, allowing me to rent an entire place by myself.
So don’t worry that I’d be dissatisfied with the current situation. In Jing’an City, this is already a very good place for those without family support. Besides, I never liked living at the Yi family estate anyway. No matter how spacious or comfortable it was, I hated it there. Staying there made me sick to my stomach. If I had to choose, I’d rather go back to that leaky basement from when I was sixteen.”
As Yi Jing listened, her defenses crumbled. Her heart ached terribly, and she was so overwhelmed with sadness that she nearly cried.
But Yi Jing couldn’t cry for Yu Miao, it wouldn’t be right to have Yu Miao comfort her at a time like this. So she bit her lip and looked pitifully at Yu Miao.
Yu Miao, however, seemed completely unfazed, as if she didn’t find her past experiences particularly distressing at all.
Yet the mere thought of Yu Miao’s former hardships made Yi Jing’s heart ache. How could her Yu Miao have endured so much hardship? If only she had met Yu Miao sooner.
“What’s with you? You look like you’re about to cry,” Yu Miao said with amusement, pinching Yi Jing’s cheek. But before she could react, Yi Jing pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Sister, I had no idea. I never knew,” Yi Jing murmured, her voice trembling with sorrow, as if it might shatter at any moment. Her arms wrapped firmly around Yu Miao, occasionally stroking her back as if to confirm she was really there. “It won’t happen again. From now on, I’ll be here. Nothing like that will ever happen to you again.”
Yu Miao froze for a moment, then quickly laughed, returning the embrace and patting Yi Jing’s back as the younger woman sniffled, trying to hold back tears. “I know, I know.”
They held each other for a while, and once their emotions had settled, they silently agreed not to dwell on the topic. Only Yi Jing remained with red-rimmed eyes as she hurried off to make dinner. After sharing the meal, they sat on the balcony to digest and continue handling work matters, inevitably circling back to the Yi family affairs.
“Will these two meetings with your superiors have any impact on you?” Yu Miao asked naturally, glancing at the documents displayed on Yi Jing’s terminal screen as they sat side by side.
“It’s fine, just standard procedure,” Yi Jing replied listlessly, still skimming through the files. “For now, they aren’t planning to investigate me. For one, Aunt and Auntie are still around, and secondly, they already know I’m not deeply connected to the Yi family.”
Yu Miao nodded and continued reading the documents on Yi Jing’s screen.
The investigation into the Yi family had officially been put on the agenda, with all relevant details confirmed. Now, it was just a matter of execution. Yu Miao casually asked, “Can people like Yi Xuan get the death penalty?”
Yi Jing shook her head while typing. “I don’t think so. The main powerholders like Old Master Yi and Old Master Zhao from the Zhao and Yi families are definitely not getting away. Yi Sheng and Yi Mian will most likely face execution. Right now, the higher-ups are focusing on these key offenders. They’re not as concerned about the younger generation of the Yi family.”
“Is that so…” Yu Miao lowered her gaze, her expression unreadable as she murmured softly, “I see.”
But she believed all those people deserved to die.
“What? What did you say, sis?” Yi Jing didn’t quite catch it and turned her head to look at Yu Miao.
According to her reasoning, even if the first trial didn’t warrant the death penalty, they could continue gathering evidence, find more victims, and file additional lawsuits to extend the sentences at least to life imprisonment or heavy sentences of twenty years or more. Among all the younger generation in the Yi and Zhao families, only Yi Mingyue had committed no major offenses beyond illegal business operations and might get a sentence of around ten years. The others couldn’t be let off easily.
But Yu Miao seemed to have lost interest in the topic. She smiled faintly and shook her head at Yi Jing. “It’s nothing.”
Yi Jing tilted her head. She felt something was off about Yu Miao but couldn’t pinpoint what. After a moment’s thought, she still wanted to explain, “Actually—”
Before she could finish, Yu Miao suddenly raised a hand to cover Yi Jing’s lips.
“?” Yi Jing looked at her in confusion.
“It’s nothing,” Yu Miao said with a smile, reaching out to gently touch Yi Jing’s nose and the space between her brows. “I just want to stay with you for a while. Can we drop this topic?”
Yi Jing was baffled, but she always went along with whatever Yu Miao said, so she happily nodded and leaned closer, pressing against her.
In the following days, neither of them brought up the matter again, as if that brief exchange had never happened.
However, after Yi Jing left for work and Yu Miao was alone in the apartment, she opened her secret terminal.
This had once been the device she used to communicate with her organization. After coming clean with Yi Jing, there was no need to contact them in secret anymore, so the terminal had been abandoned for a while. Now, she used it to store the private, incriminating information she had accidentally uncovered in her past life about the Yi family’s elders and younger generation.
Affairs between in-laws, sisters sharing lovers, younger generations sabotaging their elders’ plans to seize power, juniors secretly poaching their seniors’ allies, no major family was free of such messy scandals, let alone one like the Yi family, which was involved in illicit industries.
Violence was addictive, and so was breaking the rules.
Now, the Yi family was on edge. The slightest disturbance could shift the balance of power. Everyone was watching everyone else, waiting for the moment their rivals slipped up so they could climb over their corpses and escape the quagmire of the Yi family. If damaging information about them surfaced now, it would be their undoing. Betrayal from their own factions would lead to consequences far harsher than before.
Yu Miao planned to use this to lure the Yi family’s younger generation out and eliminate them all at once.
If the existing laws couldn’t punish these people, she would do it herself.
This was the best solution Yu Miao could come up with on her own. Otherwise, she had no way to ensure everyone was caught without implicating Yi Jing and to make sure they all paid for their past actions with their lives. Many would flee during the investigation, and their sentences could be mitigated.
Yu Miao didn’t want to see that happen. She couldn’t bear the thought of letting these people escape, of giving them even the slightest chance to cling to survival. Most of all, she couldn’t stand the idea of Yi Jing’s future being ruined because of the Yi family. The fear gnawed at her, the fear that Yi Jing, once the darling of heaven, might fall into the mud. Only by completely erasing the Yi family could Yi Jing possibly emerge relatively unscathed.
Yu Miao had wrestled with this decision for a long time before finally resolving to end everything with her own hands.
Since it had all begun with her, it was only fitting that it should end with her too. The rest, she would leave to Yi Jing’s aunt. Surely that aunt who cared so deeply for Yi Jing, who had raised her since childhood, would find a way to see her safely through this storm.
A few days later, Yi Jing received a notice for a business trip.
Lately, Yi Jing had been frequently summoned by the investigation team for questioning due to her connection to the Yi family. This time, she was being sent to another district for an investigation, just like her previous trip to District Seven. She would be away from home for several days, unable to keep Yu Miao company.
Everything seemed normal when Yi Jing left, but for some reason, she couldn’t shake an uneasy feeling. This departure felt different from her usual short absences, she was deeply worried something might happen to Yu Miao.
After much deliberation, Yi Jing borrowed a retired but experienced informant from Qi Xiao. Disguised as a temporary housekeeper, the informant would help with chores and, more importantly, keep Yu Miao safe while Yi Jing was away.
Surprisingly, Yu Miao, who usually disliked having outsiders in the house, didn’t object to Yi Jing’s arrangement. She accepted the idea of hiring a temporary helper without protest. But not long after Yi Jing left, Yu Miao retrieved her secret terminal once more.
Using hacking skills she had learned from the organization, Yu Miao registered an offshore virtual account and infiltrated the private accounts of all her targets. She sent them a message, arranging to meet at sea in two days, attaching the very secrets they least wanted exposed.
She would force those bastards to confess to all their crimes and sins. Only, she hoped her little alpha would still be willing to wait for her when it was all over.
Now, she was going to act alone, leaving Yi Jing behind.
Yi Jing spent two days in District Nine, explaining the harbor explosion incident to the investigation team. In the process, she skillfully diverted their attention, steering them toward reopening the case of Delink’s accidental death in District Seven. The evidence left behind by the Wang family and the court president hadn’t been fully erased, not to mention what Yi Heng had uncovered in District Seven over the past few months, it was more than enough to throw the Yi family into chaos.
After dealing with the investigation team, Yi Jing boarded a judicial department vehicle alone. Leaning back in the seat, she finally allowed herself to show signs of exhaustion.
She had been working nonstop these past few days, accompanying the investigation team to gather evidence everywhere. It had nearly worn her out.
But all this fatigue and hardship were worth it. Everything was proceeding according to plan. If all went well, the formal investigation into the Yi family would begin soon.
Not long after getting into the car, as Yi Jing closed her eyes to review all her recent actions, a sudden call came throughfrom Hubert, the warden of the Maximum Security Prison.
Hubert still spoke in that lazy, smiling tone of his, as if nothing mattered: “Good afternoon, Sheriff. Everything going smoothly in District Nine?”
“More or less. Proceeding according to plan,” Yi Jing replied with a light sigh.
“Is that so? Has the investigation team finally discovered that you’ve been secretly opposing the Yi family all along? That should clear their suspicions of you,” Hubert asked over the communication line.
“They shouldn’t suspect me anymore,” Yi Jing closed her eyes. “The investigation into the District Nine bombing case is basically concluded. My actions clearly showed I wasn’t aligned with Old Master Yi, in fact, I was suppressed after failing to resist him.”
