- When the Possessive Omega Fell for Me
- Chapter 71.4 - This Would Be Yi Jing's Biggest Gamble
The mysterious death of a city-level supervisory bureau director during a business trip would undoubtedly attract immediate scrutiny from above. An investigation team would swiftly mobilize, and with Yi Jing still in Jing’shan City to coordinate from within, there might truly be a chance to tear open a breach in the Yi family’s defenses.
The only drawback was the staggering cost of this gamble.
So high that even Yi Jing herself found it hard to believe anyone would willingly pay such a price.
“Chief, Chief?” The voice of the district court president interrupted, tinged with wary curiosity. “Is everything alright?”
Yi Jing glanced at him, schooling her expression back to neutrality. “It’s nothing. I was just thinking if it wasn’t our people, then who would cause trouble for us at this juncture? We’ll need to identify and eliminate this threat before it becomes a real problem.”
Mr. Wang gave an ingratiating chuckle, quick to agree while keeping focus on the immediate crisis. “The Chief makes an excellent point. Whoever created this mess must be dealt with, but our priority should be handling the investigation team dispatched from above. Without resolving that, we can’t address anything else.”
Yi Jing knew Wang would be the first casualty if the investigation dug deeper. His singular concern was understandable.
“True enough. We can’t rush this,” Yi Jing nodded. “Show me your contingency plans.”
Visibly relieved, Wang obsequiously pulled out a chair before the light screen. “Though our usual operations are minor, we’ve always been meticulous. Most activities are documented, giving us solutions for emergencies like this.”
“‘Solutions’ meaning what exactly?” Yi Jing smiled faintly, giving Wang a measured look.
“Allow me to explain,” interjected the district court president. “Given the numerous parties involved in most cases, even if investigators or others wanted to pursue matters, establishing complete evidentiary chains would be nearly impossible. Without such chains, suspicions alone can’t justify arrests.”
Yi Jing frowned, grasping the implication. “So you’re suggesting fabricating evidence chains?”
The district court president smiled faintly: “It’s not exactly forgery, just selectively hiding some fragments and slightly reversing cause and effect. With so many cases in our hands, we just need to manipulate things a bit hide the truly critical tasks and release some people to take the fall for these cases. This way we can quietly resolve these incidents. District Seven remains safe, the investigation team gets their results, everyone’s happy.”
Yi Jing suppressed the urge to sneer, turning the couple’s ring on her left middle finger as she gazed at the light screen. After a moment of silence, she asked: “Are you sure you can select reliable people? This is a serious crime, if truly convicted, it would mean life imprisonment or worse. Would they stop at just accepting the verdict without revealing anything?”
The district court president chuckled lightly: “Rest assured. Not to mention the generous terms offered by the families, merely announcing partial verdicts falls within the court’s operational scope. As long as the investigation team can bring people in to declare the case closed, the court can handle the rest.”
Yi Jing closed her eyes imperceptibly, suppressing her anger at these words, then said: “Since that’s the case, let’s discuss how to proceed.”
“It’s quite simple,” the district court president confidently opened a file on the light screen. “I’ve already outlined the specific plan in this document. All individuals involved in the cases are listed here, these people either have prior records or were previously implicated in suspicious cases. Redirecting the investigation toward them won’t raise the team’s suspicions. You just need to guide the investigation team accordingly following the steps in the plan, and we’ll handle the rest.”
Yi Jing glanced at the document, it was indeed a foolproof guide.
This would make operations easier, but it also clearly showed these two weren’t giving her District Seven’s real inside information.
Yi Jing had only cooperated with these two to obtain District Seven’s secrets, otherwise why would she go to such effort? Just to perform for Old Master Yi? She might as well have slacked off completely; doing nothing would seem more credible than suddenly changing her personality.
“No.” Yi Jing cut off the district court president decisively.
“Chief? You’re…” The district court president hesitated, looking at Yi Jing, while Boss Wang beside them grew anxious: “Chief, are you refusing to help? This can’t go on, if we let the investigation team keep digging in District Seven, the families will suffer heavy losses!”
Yi Jing raised a hand to silence him.
“I’ll help you, but just handing me a document to follow won’t work,” Yi Jing said with a faintly mocking smile, her tone dismissive. “Who do you think I am? Who do you think the investigation team sent to District Seven consists of?
“You think you can fool Central Inspection Bureau personnel with a fool’s guide? Even if you’re confident, I can’t humor such recklessness. I still have promotions ahead the Central Inspection Bureau directly oversees the Supervision Court. I won’t take that risk.”
The District Seven court president hesitated: “Then your meaning is?”
Yi Jing considered, then adopted an arrogant demeanor: “I’ll reference your plan, but I need more comprehensive implementation measures.”
“Your meaning is…” The district court president hesitated slightly as he looked at Yi Jing, waiting for her to continue.
“I need to review all the documents, files, and personnel records related to this plan,” Yi Jing straightened up and met the district court president’s gaze. “You should know that sometimes the smallest details can determine success or failure especially when dealing with experienced investigators. I need to see the full picture to adjust our strategy in time and ensure this plan of yours can be implemented to the greatest extent possible.”
The district court president thought for a moment before conceding. He leaned back slightly, handing over terminal control to Yi Jing and swiping his own work ID through the authorization slot beside it.
Yi Jing turned her attention to the documents before her.
Admittedly, the district court president someone who had spent years tampering with case files across various social incidents had crafted an exceptionally detailed plan. It involved a considerable number of personnel, with a complete chain of evidence, even leaving some investigative leeway for the task force. By splicing the evidence trail, he had concealed the most critical information while still outlining estimated sentences for each person involved the heaviest punishment indeed stopping at life imprisonment, with no death penalty at all.
Frowning, Yi Jing continued reading through the cases linked to those involved and the covert operations of District Seven’s factories. The more she read, the darker her expression grew.
The reason the task force had initially investigated District Seven’s factories was that Delink’s cause of death matched that of the unsolved District Five serial killings. Yet, who would have thought that the still-at-large killer was actually hiding in District Seven all along?
The task force’s investigative direction hadn’t been wrong, the man who had resigned from the factory was indeed the District Five serial killer. However, unlike other serial killers driven by some twisted addiction to murder, he was simply a professional assassin from the Yi family. After cleaning up the targets Old Master Yi wanted eliminated in District Five, he had been relocated to District Seven to live under an assumed identity in retirement.
Due to his nature as a killer, he couldn’t stay in one place for too long, always compelled to change locations and identities. The Yi family fully backed his choices, having only recently arranged for him to switch hideouts this time blending in among ordinary factory workers. But then Delink suddenly died, drawing the task force’s attention to the factory. The assassin, who hadn’t even acted, now risked exposure and had no choice but to flee immediately.
Beyond that, the people of District Seven had long operated with utter lawlessness. Hunting down and threatening local officials, monopolizing whistleblowing channels, and forcibly suppressing major incidents were standard practice. Even the District Seven governor, who had been suspended after Delink’s investigation, had been their accomplice, taking the fall for all charges because Old Master Yi intended to pin the blame on him.
And it wasn’t just shielding and enabling violent crimes, Boss Wang’s factories were far from clean either.
A full third of their production lines manufactured unregistered controlled goods. The workers in those workshops operated in secrecy, laboring around the clock without even basic safety measures.
Due to the appalling working conditions, there had once been a worker uprising at the factory. The factory enforcers brutally suppressed it, directly killing two instigators and deliberately delaying police reports while preventing others from seeking medical treatment. The matter was eventually swept under the rug no one faced punishment, with only minimal compensation paid. Yi Jing had never even heard about this incident or seen any reports, revealing how lawless these local forces working for the Yi family truly were.
Yi Jing’s hands trembled slightly with rage, but the angrier she grew, the more composed she remained.
She meticulously reviewed the documents, gaining a clear understanding of the Yi family’s operations in District Seven. Maintaining perfect composure as if unaffected, she naturally discussed more detailed plans and contingency measures with the District Seven court president.
As the conversation progressed, the subtle wariness and distrust in the court president’s expression gradually faded. Nearby, Boss Wang also wore a look that said, “No need to worry this time.”
At least for now, Yi Jing hoped to prevent the District Seven situation from escalating. Every reform she proposed genuinely benefited the overall plan, successfully deceiving even the skeptical court president.
After finalizing the details, Yi Jing left the quarantine center through a side entrance as if she’d never been there. Declining Boss Wang’s offer to escort her, she took a taxi back to the investigation team’s temporary lodgings.
Yi Jing typically stayed out of the team’s decision-making and occupied a private suite at the hotel.
Returning to her rooms, she poured herself an iced drink. Gazing at the gloomy sky outside, she slowly drained the glass.
Soon, the investigation team would dispatch members to adjacent District Eleven to pursue the escaped assassin from District Seven or at least negotiate with District Eleven’s authorities. The team leader would likely accompany the criminal investigation unit.
Yi Jing had considered whether to join them. But according to intelligence from the court president, the Yi family had already decided to have the assassin take the fall for the Delinke case. District Eleven was where they planned his capture, he wouldn’t resist arrest there.
Which meant Yi Jing had to go.
This was both the best opportunity and the most dangerous one. Toppling an empire like the Yi family required patience. Acting rashly might let them escape justice after finally obtaining leverage, so she had to try.
At dawn the next day, half the investigation team departed for District Eleven to coordinate with local police. Surprisingly, the joint operation proceeded smoothly, with seamless cooperation between Districts Seven and Eleven’s forces as they launched the manhunt.
Yi Jing accompanied the team but remained silent throughout.
When night fell and both the Inspection Bureau director and Discipline Commission secretary retired to their rooms, the ever-solitary Yi Jing lit a cigarette at the hotel corridor’s end. After finishing it, she ascended the stairs to find the Inspection Bureau director.
This was the biggest bet Yi Jing intended to place.
If the head of the Inspection Bureau could truly notice the issues within the Yi family, regardless of whether Delink deliberately intended to draw the attention of higher-ups, Yi Jing might just seize the maximum value this case could offer.
In the penthouse suite of the hotel, Yi Jing and the Inspection Bureau director held a secret two-hour discussion. No one knew what they talked about, but afterward, the investigation team’s operations suddenly became smoother. Targets were consistently apprehended, evidence chains were swiftly completed, and though some still resisted stubbornly, the desired information was ultimately obtained.
It was when the investigation was halfway through and about sixty percent of the targets had been captured that Yi Jing received a message from Yu Miao:
[“Sweetheart, Beryl has agreed to cooperate with us.”]
Lying on her couch in her room, pretending to be idle, Yi Jing immediately sat up straight and messaged Yu Miao back: [“Did she reveal anything?”]
[“A lot,”] Yu Miao replied. [“Beryl has been in charge of numerous projects this past year. She even has access to some of Heng’en Group’s confidential reports everything from the sources of raw materials to the distribution routes of finished products.”]
[“Now we’re just waiting for you to return. Once you’re back, we can investigate together.”]
Reading Yu Miao’s message, Yi Jing let out a long exhale.
With the intel she had gathered in District Seven and the evidence Beryl could provide, she and Yu Miao would be able to obtain detailed information on over forty percent of the Yi family’s manpower deployment by the end of this operation. The more they learned about the Yi family, the higher their chances of success, and the shorter the time they would need to remain in hiding and endure.
Yi Jing carefully assessed the situation. Perhaps now was the time to strike at the Yi family’s operations.
No risk, no reward. No matter how thick the Yi family’s health bar was, it couldn’t withstand repeated attrition. When truly surrounded on all sides, even the Yi patriarch would run out of tricks.
