- Chapter 71.2 - This Would Be Yi Jing's Biggest Gamble
“I believe they would investigate,” Yu Miao said thoughtfully, speaking slowly. “When the tragedy occurred, I hadn’t yet resigned from the Nichu Group and wasn’t very familiar with the Yi family’s affairs. I still had some contact with Beryl at the time. After hearing about the incident, I tried reaching out to her, but her state seemed off.”
“Hmm?” Yi Jing tilted her head slightly, not quite following. “What do you mean by ‘off’?”
“I expected her to be devastated, completely broken. Given her personality, she should have been weeping about losing her lover and desperate to find them again,” Yu Miao frowned. “But she wasn’t. She didn’t say anything like that at all. Instead, she was eerily calm and logical just too tightly wound, almost to the point of appearing neurotic, like she was in a trauma-induced stress state. She also refused to share much with me and hung up after just a few words.”
Yi Jing’s brows slowly furrowed as well. “Did she discover something?”
“That’s what I thought too,” Yu Miao nodded. “But back then, I wasn’t paying attention to the Yi family’s dealings, nor did I know about Heng’en’s collusion with them, so I didn’t connect the dots. Now, though it’s possible Beryl realized her lover’s death wasn’t as simple as it seemed. I’ve already checked Beryl is still employed at Heng’en Group. She might be willing to help us.”
“I’ll have Qi Xiao send someone to approach her immediately,” Yi Jing stood up at once.
There was a chance they could obtain some extraordinary information from this Beryl.
The woman had worked at Heng’en for quite some time, holding a relatively high position. Unlike those who had been threatened or bribed, if she truly had the added motivation of vengeance, Beryl wouldn’t retreat as easily as an ordinary person… She might even know Heng’en better than anyone else.
After carefully selecting a few people to make contact with Beryl, Yi Jing, who remained at the Inspectorate, deliberately playing the fool returned to studying the disputes linked to Heng’en.
Through their recent investigations into these conflicts, Yi Jing and Hubert had unexpectedly uncovered numerous gray-market shipping channels hidden beneath the veneer of legitimate companies. These seemingly lawful businesses used falsified accounts and forged documents to transport smuggled materials and illegal products within Jing’an City, with each route serving as a controlled distribution line for the Yi family’s lower-tier operations.
Yi Jing and Hubert continued tracing these distribution lines, attempting to identify all the enterprises and storefronts connected to the Yi family’s sales network.
Those within the 13th District were easier to handle, Yi Jing and Qi Xiao’s jurisdiction covered the area, allowing them to investigate at any time. But businesses outside the 13th District were another matter.
Although Yi Jing and Qi Xiao’s authority extended across all of Jing’an City, granting them the power to oversee and even take over the operations of district-level units when necessary, mobilizing personnel from subordinate districts under normal circumstances was far from simple.
Efficiency aside, the content of their investigations could easily be exposed.
Yi Jing and Qi Xiao had no better options for now they could only focus on what was within their immediate reach. As their inquiries deepened, all suspicious enterprises and storefronts within the 13th District were marked by Yi Jing, Qi Xiao, and Hubert. However, progress in other districts remained stagnant, and the investigation gradually hit a dead end.
Yi Jing and Qi Xiao had considered several measures, but all proved ineffective. To avoid alerting the enemy, they had to temporarily suspend other activities, anxiously awaiting Beryl’s response.
What if Beryl refused to cooperate as well.
Under the current circumstances, the stalemate would persist neither they nor the Yi family would gain the upper hand. Finding the next breakthrough would become even more difficult, and who knew when another opportunity might arise?
Yi Jing’s mindset was somewhat unbalanced. She couldn’t help feeling it would be a shame to miss this chance, yet there was little she could do. She could only console herself that good things take time after all, a family as formidable as the Yi clan wouldn’t be easy to deal with. If she wanted results, she had to be patient.
Just as Yi Jing was about to convince herself, new reports came in from District Seven Derek, who had been assigned by Mahira to investigate local conditions (and might never return to District Thirteen), was attacked by unknown assailants late at night and died twenty-three hours prior. His body was discovered in a sewer not far from one of the Yi family’s factories.
When the news broke, most of the Supervision Bureau was stunned.
Derek had not yet resigned from his position as the Bureau’s director. Strictly speaking, he was still the highest-ranking official of Jing’an City’s Supervision Bureau their chief. And just like that, he was gone?
Moreover, the director of the Supervision Bureau held a high-ranking position. How could such a senior official suddenly die under mysterious circumstances in a subordinate district?
This was bound to escalate into a major incident.
Anyone with even a basic understanding of the Alliance’s current laws and the investigative procedures triggered by the unexpected death of a public official would realize that District Seven was about to face a storm. A case this egregious would inevitably draw scrutiny from higher authorities, who would dispatch an investigative team to comb through the district thoroughly.
As the news spread, Yi Jing, Qi Xiao, and Hubert’s private group chat lit up with activity, and a new video call connected.
“How’s it looking on your end? Any updates?” Hubert, seated in her office at the Supreme Prison, crossed her legs and asked Yi Jing with mild concern.
“Nothing yet,” Yi Jing replied, leaning back in her chair, resting her chin on her hand absentmindedly. “No word from the Supervision Bureau, and Chen Feng hasn’t made any moves either though he was just called to a meeting at the Municipal Committee.”
Hubert pondered for a moment, tapping her fingers on the armrest before suddenly asking, “And your aunt? Has she said anything?”
Yi Jing shook her head. “Haven’t asked yet. My aunt oversees the Ministry of Finance and has little involvement with judicial affairs. News doesn’t reach her that quickly. If something major happens, she’ll notify me immediately.”
Hubert clicked her tongue softly and muttered, “Something about this doesn’t add up. No matter how you look at it, there’s more to this. Even if Derek had crossed the Yi family badly, Patriarch Yi wouldn’t resort to such a messy method to eliminate him. Stirring up this much trouble would only create more problems for himself.”
Yi Jing didn’t respond, but privately, she agreed.
With the case details still undisclosed and the facts unclear, it was impossible to determine who was behind Derek’s murder. However, such a sloppy execution didn’t align with the Yi family’s usual style. At the very least, they would have let Derek settle into District Seven for a while before staging an “accidental” death, wouldn’t they?
Turning this into a blatant homicide case might even alert the higher-ups’ investigation team that wouldn’t be worth it no matter how you look at it, right?
“I’ve got some new information,” Qi Xiao said, glancing at her terminal.
“Oh?” Both Yi Jing and Hubert turned to look at her. “What is it?”
Qi Xiao tapped her terminal a few times, seemingly reviewing some document, then lowered her gaze to Yi Jing. “Looks like you’re about to go on a business trip. One of our deputy directors happens to be old classmates with a member of the newly formed investigation team from the higher-ups. Just received word that a task force has been established for Derrick’s murder case supervised personally by senior leadership. They want someone from Jing’an City’s judicial system to serve as deputy team leader, and she’s already recommended you.”
“Hmm?” Yi Jing was taken aback.
“Not just my superior, but several deputy directors also recommended you including those who are close to the Yi family,” Qi Xiao swiped away a few more messages. “The head of the investigation team wasn’t comfortable with the other recommendations, so they privately asked Deputy Director Lin, who also endorsed you. That’s when we realized you were the unanimous choice of the entire city police department.”
Yi Jing froze for a moment, struggling to grasp the situation.
She had indeed been keeping a low profile lately, but given that she was still in a cold war with the Yi family, it was unlikely Old Master Yi would believe her recent behavior was genuine repentance. If he were that easily fooled, she and Yu Miao wouldn’t have had such a hard time resisting him.
Unless this incident was truly troublesome for the Yi family? Had Old Master Yi reached a dead end?
Yi Jing pondered, sensing there was more to this than met the eye.
“Your transfer order should arrive soon. Whatever happens, be careful,” Qi Xiao’s voice came through the screen again.
Yi Jing glanced up at Qi Xiao’s concerned expression and Hubert’s furrowed brow, nodding thoughtfully. “Got it. I’ll keep my head down and see what Old Master Yi is really up to.”
The video call ended quickly. As Qi Xiao predicted, by evening, Yi Jing’s appointment letter arrived on her terminal. A joint investigation team of eight members was formed: a director from the local inspection bureau, an officer from the disciplinary committee’s secretariat, Yi Jing from Jing’an City’s judicial department, along with two assistants from the inspection bureau, two from the disciplinary committee, and one secretary from Mayor Mahira’s office.
The eight were tasked with overseeing the local police’s investigation into Derrick’s accidental death in District Seven. The schedule was tight Yi Jing had to depart for District Seven immediately after receiving the order, while the rest of the team was already en route via a dedicated aircraft.
Yi Jing: “…”
Frowning at the notice, she reluctantly sent Yu Miao a message: [Sis, I won’t be able to have dinner with you tonight.]
[Working overtime?] Yu Miao replied quickly.
[No, a business trip. The decision on Derrick’s case is out, a joint investigation by the Central Inspection Bureau and the local police, supervised by the disciplinary committee. I’ve been pulled into the team as support. I have to leave for District Seven now.] Yi Jing sighed, typing unhappily.
There was a pause before Yu Miao responded a few minutes later: [Do you think the Yi family was behind Derrick’s death?]
Yi Jing considered it: [The Yi family has done plenty of unscrupulous things, but this doesn’t seem like their style.]
[I agree,] Yu Miao’s message aligned with Qi Xiao and Hubert’s views. [The situation is complicated stay safe. Since Old Master Yi hasn’t bothered us lately, he’s probably satisfied with you staying out of things. Be cautious, don’t dig too deep, and watch out for his schemes.]
[Got it.]
Yi Jing replied to Yu Miao’s reminder, set down her terminal, and let out a soft sigh.
Anyone could see that this situation was complicated and not particularly favorable for her. She’d really been handed a tough assignment.
Just as she was thinking this, another message arrived on her terminal.
It was from that secretary from Mayor Mahira’s office, the one who had been invited to join the investigation team as an assistant. The overly familiar woman had used the internal civil servant messaging system to ask if Yi Jing wanted to travel to District Seven together.
Yi Jing: “…”
What a lunatic.
