When the Possessive Omega Fell for Me - Chapter 70.1
Yi Jing had thought she would be confined in the old church’s cell for a long time, but unexpectedly, she was released after just one week.
However, this time it wasn’t Old Master Yi’s decision to let her out. Instead, something major had happened in the Yi family that forced them to temporarily lift her confinement.
The Yi family’s matriarch her great-grandmother and Old Master Yi’s birth mother had passed away.
The elderly woman had been very old, and her health had always been poor, so this outcome seemed expected by all the family members. During the funeral, the Yi family estate was enveloped in silence, with solemn expressions on everyone’s faces, lending the entire manor an air of desolation.
The funeral was grandly arranged. The area around Jinghe Garden was draped in white silk, turning half the mountain white.
It was only then that Yi Jing realized how vast her great-grandmother’s residence had been. Yet, for a woman nearly a hundred years old, the only space she seemed to use was the single room Yi Jing had seen during her last visit.
She couldn’t understand why Old Master Yi had arranged things this way.
Yi Jing couldn’t help but wonder if there was some underworld grudge involved, but no matter how much she speculated, she would never know Old Master Yi’s true thoughts. Her great-grandmother was already gone, and with her, all secrets returned to dust. Besides, Yi Jing wasn’t particularly close to the original owner’s great-grandmother, so there was no way to dig into the past.
For reasons unknown, no one in the Yi family had thought to notify her when her great-grandmother was critically ill. Thus, Yi Jing only learned of the old woman’s passing when the funeral had already begun and she was summoned to attend.
Having missed the chance to see her great-grandmother one last time, Yi Jing naturally had no idea what the old woman had done in her final moments or whether she had left any words for her great-granddaughter.
Not that Yi Jing held much expectation from the Yi family even if there were last words, they might not be anything she wanted to hear.
On the day of the funeral, Yi Jing wore a black dress with white gauze roses pinned to her hat and arm, joining the rest of the Yi family in paying respects to the tombstone erected in the family cemetery.
The procession was long. Yi Jing followed behind her aunt, blending into the crowd as she gazed from a distance at the tombstone.
Would I one day be buried here too? Standing out of place among the grieving crowd, Yi Jing suddenly found herself lost in thought.
Perhaps it was because she had witnessed too much life and death recently, but she couldn’t help feeling affected.
However, she quickly snapped out of it, if that day ever came, it would mean her plans had failed, and failed spectacularly at that. Otherwise, given the Yi family’s temperament, there was no way they would allow a family traitor into the cemetery.
So that day would never come.
After the long, emotionally oppressive funeral, Old Master Yi would spend considerable time negotiating with various allied families about business adjustments following the former matriarch’s passing. The estate would remain draped in white, with guests coming and going.
Old Master Yi never brought up the confinement again, and Yi Jing certainly wasn’t foolish enough to return to the cell on her own. With her suspension still in effect and nothing much to do, she decided to drag Yu Miao along for a seaside getaway to clear her mind.
However, District 13 wasn’t coastal, the most beautiful shorelines in Jing’an City were all in District 9.
The private port where the explosion occurred hadn’t reopened yet, but District 9 had plenty of scenic spots still accessible to the public. Among its many coastlines, one stood out as the most picturesque, though its somewhat remote location meant it rarely drew many tourists. Without hesitation, Yi Jing decided to set their date there.
Yi Heng, who was usually idle, caught wind of the plan and tagged along, booking out the entire top floor of a seaside hotel. She also brought along a young woman.
The girl was quite pretty not in a delicate, refined way, but with a natural softness and ease that complemented her quiet, scholarly demeanor. At a glance, she resembled a graceful sapling standing apart from the crowd. Yet her pheromones were so faint they were nearly undetectable likely a beta.
“And this is?” Yi Jing asked Yi Heng, eyeing the girl.
She was curious about who Yi Heng would bring along, and for some reason, she also felt the girl was looking at her strangely as if she had something to say, or as if she already knew her.
After all, this was Yi Heng’s friend. They occasionally interacted face-to-face, but whenever they did, the girl would avoid meeting her gaze. Only when Yi Jing stopped looking would she sense the girl’s eyes flickering back toward her.
Yi Jing: “…”
She didn’t particularly mind the girl’s attention there was no malice in her expression, nor any obvious desire to get closer. But, the girl’s demeanor was odd. Her eyes were clear, yet brimming with unspoken words. When she looked at Yi Jing, there was something almost pitying in her gaze, a faint sorrow, as if Yi Jing were some unfortunate soul.
Yi Jing was baffled.
Did this girl know she’d been suspended?
Even so, was that really worth such a sympathetic look?
“This is my business partner,” Yi Heng said cheerfully, oblivious to the strange tension between them. “Didn’t I tell you before? I met an incredibly talented person with her, I’m guaranteed to make it big. This is her, Qin Susu! A genius who studied abroad at a top Western university. Don’t let her youth fool you; her research is groundbreaking. Thanks to her, my company’s finally standing on solid ground.”
Qin Susu glanced at Yi Jing, then at Yu Miao, and finally at Yi Heng, her fair cheeks slowly flushing. “I-I’m not that amazing,” she murmured. “The senior researcher in my lab was the real genius, I could never compare to her. Though, it’s been a long time since I last saw her.”
Yi Jing tilted her head slightly, watching as the girl grew increasingly flustered and turned her attention solely to Yi Heng. She found it amusing. Where on earth had Yi Heng found such an oddball? The girl seemed genuinely inept at socializing.
Most people in her position would be doing everything they could to sell themselves, desperate to impress potential investors. But openly admitting someone else was more talented? That was a first for Yi Jing.
“Oh, what does it matter? Now that you’re by my side, you’re the best. Didn’t you say it yourself? It’s been ages since you last saw your senior sister, so right now, you’re the best!” Yi Heng blurted out without a second thought.
Yi Jing: “…”
Yi Jing took two steps back, pondering the atmosphere between Yi Heng and that young girl, and seemed to grasp why Yi Heng had insisted on bringing her business partner along on her date. On one hand, Yi Heng couldn’t really participate or have much to say at that funeral, and on the other. Yi Heng probably wanted to go on a date with the person she fancied too.
Tsk tsk.
Yi Jing had always been too lazy to bother with whatever Yi Heng was up to. After all, Yi Heng had kept her distance from the Yi family all these years, handling things carefully and discreetly, unlikely to cause any real trouble by overstepping.
So, let Yi Heng do as she pleased.
Yi Jing secretly wrapped an arm around Yu Miao’s waist and led her toward the beach.
Today, this stretch of beach had been reserved by Yi Heng. The winding shoreline was nearly deserted, adorned only with the bouquets and seaside decorations Yi Jing had arranged in advance.
“Darling, did you plan all this too?” Yu Miao stopped by a flower-adorned swing, happily giving it a gentle push before turning to brush her fingers along Yi Jing’s jawline.
“Of course,” Yi Jing, delighted by Yu Miao’s playful gesture, leaned in with a sweet smile. “Do you like it? Are you happy with the arrangements?”
Yu Miao turned and lightly touched Yi Jing’s cheek, her eyes sparkling as she teased, “Come swing with me.”
Without hesitation, Yi Jing snuggled up to her.
Between the two, Yi Jing was slightly taller, her toes occasionally pushing off the stone anchoring the swing to keep it swaying gently. They nestled together on the cushioned seat, arms wrapped around each other.
“What made you suddenly decide to bring me to District Nine?” Yu Miao asked, leaning against Yi Jing as the sea breeze ruffled their hair, her fingers idly playing with the hem of Yi Jing’s clothes.
“Hmm…” Yi Jing thought for a moment, gazing at the rolling waves. “I just felt like we really needed a break. For so long, both of us have been wound tight, always with something urgent demanding our attention. Even when we seemed relaxed, there was never a moment we could truly let go.
But now it’s different. At this point, Old Master Yi is definitely keeping a close eye on us whatever we do might catch his attention, so it’s not the right time to act. And since I’m on leave with no official duties, why not take a proper vacation? Let whoever wants to watch us do just that. Better yet, maybe they’ll even foot the bill for us.”
“You,” Yu Miao chuckled softly, poking Yi Jing’s cheek with amusement dancing in her eyes. “What’s to be done? Aren’t you a wealthy heir yourself? How have you fallen to mooching off others’ tabs?”
“Hmph,” Yi Jing let out a tiny huff, sliding down slightly to rest her head on Yu Miao’s shoulder, whining as if it were truly the case. “There are bad people out to get me. What should I do, Sister? I might lose my job soon. At this rate, I’ll have to rely on you to support me.”
“Oh dear, what should we do now?” Yu Miao played along, swaying on the swing as she asked, “Are you easy to take care of? I don’t want a high-maintenance puppy.”
“I’m the easiest to take care of,” Yi Jing immediately perked up at this, speaking with conviction, “I know to run home when it rains, eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, I eat little but work hard! Oh, and sister, I’ve arranged a barbecue on the beach. Let’s go grill seafood with Yi Heng later, okay? She seems to be pursuing that Qin Susu, so she’ll definitely be eager to show off her skills. We can have her grill seafood for the three of us, how about that?”
Yu Miao glanced at Yi Jing with amusement, teasing, “Aren’t you being a little naughty, sweetheart?”
Though her words called Yi Jing ‘naughty,’ there wasn’t a hint of disapproval in her expression.
“How is this naughty?” Yi Jing immediately straightened up, speaking righteously, “We’re helping them! We’re noble love facilitators, Yi Heng should be thanking us!”
“Alright then,” Yu Miao smiled, “If you say so, let’s do it that way.”
The evening sea breeze was at its most pleasant, blowing in from the ocean, carrying cool moisture that swept away the excess heat, bringing the temperature to the perfect comfort level.
The four of them, Yi Jing, Yu Miao, Yi Heng, and Qin Susu, set up a grill not far from the hotel by the shore. A wine cooler and a small speaker were placed nearby, while the freshest seafood and ingredients were continuously delivered to them by hotel staff.
The briny seafood sizzled on the grill, releasing rich, savory aromas under the seasoning. Yi Jing deliberately avoided offering help, wanting to watch Yi Heng pursue the bookish scholar Qin Susu. Instead, she kept praising Yi Heng for being amazing at everything, especially at managing life and taking care of everyone around her. Then, while Yi Heng was basking in the praise, she pulled Yu Miao along to sneakily feast on the food.
Once they were about seventy percent full, Yi Jing quietly found an excuse to slip away with a bottle of champagne and two crystal glasses, leading Yu Miao to the shoreline.
By then, the tide had slowly receded, revealing the rocks along the coast. Yi Jing guided Yu Miao to sit on a smoother stretch of rocks. Two hotel staff who had been following at a distance hurried over to set up an ice bucket for the champagne and a flower bucket filled with fresh roses.
“Hmm? Why the flowers again?” Yu Miao glanced at the roses and asked casually.
“For the atmosphere, of course! Don’t you think we should have roses around when it’s just the two of us? After all, we’re a proper couple, not like Yi Heng who’s still in the pursuit phase.” Yi Jing rambled nervously.
“Well, I suppose that makes sense?” Yu Miao replied.
“Of course it does, it absolutely makes sense.” Yi Jing wrapped her arms around Yu Miao, watching the dark waves rise and fall before them. The distant sky had completely darkened, and the lights from the shore and neon reflections shimmered on the water. Occasionally, a yacht or two passed by, bringing faint glimmers of light from afar.
The delicate fragrance of roses mingled with the subtle notes of champagne, softly enveloping the two of them. As Yi Jing gazed at the undulating waves, she stole glances at her wristwatch, anxiously counting down the seconds.
It was Yu Miao who first noticed something amiss. Tilting her head to glance at Yi Jing’s profile, she chuckled softly and asked, “Sweetheart, why is your heart beating so fast?”
“Hmm?” Yi Jing averted her gaze guiltily, pursing her lips before replying, “I-Is it?”
“Yes,” Yu Miao laughed lightly, turning to study Yi Jing’s expression closely with an amused tone, “Your heartbeat’s racing, and your temperature’s risen too. Are you nervous?”
As she spoke, Yu Miao half-knelt to prop herself up, looking down at Yi Jing from above. The faint scent of her pheromones overpowered the aroma of roses and wine, blending into an intoxicating fragrance that made one’s cheeks burn uncontrollably.
With a radiant smile, Yu Miao gazed at Yi Jing, her fingertips lightly brushing against Yi Jing’s cheek as she asked playfully, “What exactly are you trying to do, sweetheart?”
“I-I’m not trying to do anything,” Yi Jing stammered, her face and ears turning completely red. Fortunately, night had fully fallen, and the only light came from the palace-style floor lamp placed by the rocks by hotel staff, its glow wasn’t bright enough to reveal Yi Jing’s flushed complexion. “I just brought you here to sit for a while.”
As she spoke, Yi Jing nervously counted down in her heart, waiting for her prearranged ‘accomplice’ to make an appearance. Right on schedule, a cruise ship slowly parted the waves and sailed into the sea directly in front of them.
Yi Jing’s eyes lit up, forgetting all about her embarrassment as she pulled Yu Miao into her lap with a tug, making her sit on her legs so they could both face the sea. “Sister, look over there!”
“What?” Yu Miao turned her head just in time to see the first firework shoot up from the yacht. A golden orb rapidly ascended, trailing a long tail across the dark night sky before exploding into a blooming flower.
Brilliant fireworks cascaded through the night, intertwining with the scattered stars above.
One after another, the fireworks rose into the sky, their patterns gradually changing from initial dandelion clusters to vibrant flowers of all colors. Amidst the dazzling afterglow, Yi Jing gifted Yu Miao a bouquet that bloomed in the night sky, along with a message, ‘YM, Jing Jing loves you forever.’
“Did, you prepare this?” Yu Miao gazed at the sky for a long time, her glistening eyes hinting at unshed tears.
“Mhm,” Yi Jing responded sheepishly, letting out a soft chuckle before finally pulling out a small box from her pocket. With a click, she opened it to reveal a pair of diamond-studded rings. “Actually, I mainly wanted to give you these. But it felt too abrupt and careless to just hand them over suddenly. I wanted to make you happier first.”
“What is this, a proposal?” Yu Miao lowered her eyes to look at the rings in Yi Jing’s hand, her voice carrying a slight tremble.
Yi Jing, however, froze for a moment before looking up at her with a mix of surprise and hesitation. “Sister, do you want me to propose?”
Yu Miao looked down at her, her gaze filled with complex affection, and gently kissed Yi Jing before asking, “What were you originally planning to do?”
“I wanted to give you this ring.” Yi Jing fumbled nervously as she took the ring from its box. For some reason, facing Yu Miao’s gaze now made her inexplicably tense.
She carefully removed the ring and gently took Yu Miao’s hand, guiding her fingertips to trace the engraved patterns inside the band.
The ring was exquisitely crafted, its front adorned with intricate rose motifs, the centerpiece a dazzling square-cut sapphire. The band itself was etched with delicate vine and leaf designs, studded with tiny diamonds that shimmered under the light. But what truly stood out was the inscription inside the ring not Yi Jing’s initials, nor Yu Miao’s.
Yu Miao’s fingers brushed over the fine lettering, struggling to decipher it. After a long pause, she finally asked, “What does this say?”
“It’s a phrase,” Yi Jing replied, clasping Yu Miao’s hand ring and all in her palm. She looked up at her and said softly, “Latin. Te semper eligam’I will always choose you.’ I just wanted to say, no matter what happens in the future, no matter how things change, I will always choose you. Just like choosing my own humanity.”
As for proposing.
It wasn’t that Yi Jing didn’t want to she simply didn’t dare. She was afraid. Afraid that there might be even the slightest chance she couldn’t stay with Yu Miao until the end.
