- Chapter 65 - They Needed to Reach the No-Fly Zone Fast to Lose Those Surveillance Drones
The press conference venue was full of media personnel. As soon as Yi Jing was led into the hall by an attendant through a secret passage, she saw a sea of reporters crowded below the podium, with only Qi Xiao standing in a corner at the edge of the venue.
Yi Jing nodded to Qi Xiao from afar, then turned her gaze back to the reporters below the stage.
Scanning the crowd, the faces and badges of each reporter looked somewhat familiar – those sitting in the front rows seemed to be media outlets close to the political and legal system and the Yi family.
Yi Jing lowered her eyes, making another mental note.
Old Master Yi was setting her up again.
This time, Old Master Yi clearly didn’t intend to leave them any room for maneuver, displaying his uncompromising style to the fullest.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t possibly say anything Old Master Yi wanted to hear.
Whether for herself, for Yu Miao, or for those who knowingly took many risks despite the Yi family’s formidable reputation, she would not back down or compromise at this point.
Yi Jing recalled the relevant files and documents on the Five Districts Purge case that she had repeatedly read, as well as the script Old Master Yi had given her. She silently broke down the potential questioning rhythm of the other side in her mind, reorganizing what she should say.
The venue manager arranged by the Yi family glanced at Yi Jing’s expression, stepped forward to adjust her equipment, then raised a hand to signal the reporters. In an emotionless tone, he announced: “The press conference to disclose details of the Supervisory Bureau’s actions regarding recent rumors about the ‘Five Districts Purge case’ will now begin. Reporters, please prepare your questions.”
Undercurrents surged through the venue, with reporters from different media outlets eyeing each other warily and apprehensively.
This press conference was indeed orchestrated by Old Master Yi, but whether a candidate had been derelict in their duties before being elected had always been major news. Once the information was released, it attracted widespread attention. From the political and legal system to the judicial system, and even the seemingly uninvolved public security system and ordinary citizens, everyone was very concerned. Those present all had their own agendas, and some media outlets had nearly caused trouble over the right to ask the first question even before the press conference began.
Even now, with procedures and processes all set, the scene had not calmed down. Some media outlets apparently still refused to give up, trying hard to cause trouble for those reporters close to the political and legal system who had been predetermined to ask questions first, in hopes of gaining priority to ask questions themselves.
Yi Jing sat on the stage, discreetly observing these reporters. With one glance, she recognized those media outlets designated by the Yi family who had pre-arranged questions and only needed her to play along.
Those were the people she needed to guard against. Yi Jing couldn’t possibly call on those reporters to ask questions first.
She needed to find some unprepared people. Fortunately, besides the media arranged by the Yi family, there seemed to be some reporters harboring anger, eager to expose the unfairness of the press conference.
This was exactly the kind of person Yi Jing wanted.
“Good morning, friends from the media. I am Yi Jing, Deputy Director of the Supervisory Bureau and Security Officer of District 13. Starting now, I will be mainly responsible for clarifying the recent controversial matter of ‘whether the current head of the Supervisory Bureau was derelict in their duties in handling past cases’. So please.”
Yi Jing gave an opening statement, pausing subtly for two seconds to consider, then as the first speaker at the scene, she selected a reporter who looked visibly disgruntled. Since this was outside the plan and Yi Jing wasn’t familiar with them, her gaze lingered for a moment on the nameplate in front of their seat before slowly reading out the media outlet they represented: “Let’s have the reporter from Southern Times ask the first question.”
As soon as she finished speaking, most of the people present were stunned.
The staff who had been notified of the procedures in advance and were just waiting to cooperate mechanically were taken aback, looking at the venue manager standing below the podium with surprise and confusion, unsure of what had happened.
The reporter close to the political and legal system had been smugly holding their head high, ready to be called on first, but upon hearing Yi Jing’s words, they turned to look at the reporter Yi Jing had named with a face full of surprise.
Even the reporter who was suddenly called on was somewhat dazed, raising their agitated face in bewilderment, the anger at the unfairness of the scene not yet fully dissipated from their expression.
Yi Jing’s demeanor was gentle as she patiently asked again: “Does the reporter from Southern Times have any questions?”
The reporter, after a moment’s pause, quickly came to their senses. The anger and dissatisfaction typical when facing unfair events returned to their face.
Yi Jing looked over expectantly, watching as the reporter adjusted the miniature microphone on their collar and stood up without hesitation to ask bluntly: “Good morning, Officer Yi. I’d like to ask, in the ‘Five Districts Purge case’, did the Director of the Supervisory Bureau, Delinke, truly neglect his duties? What was the purpose of this action, and are the casualty figures circulating online accurate?”
The venue manager arranged by the Yi family, standing very close behind Yi Jing, had sensed something was amiss and lightly tapped Yi Jing’s back. Yi Jing felt it but acted as if she hadn’t noticed at all. Instead, she slightly raised her eyes to make eye contact with Qi Xiao standing in the far corner again.
Like all those secretly paying attention to this press conference, anyone who knew a bit of the truth would not want Yi Jing to say anything favorable to Mahira at such a crucial moment.
Yi Jing was very clear about this in her heart, so she withdrew her gaze and focused on that reporter again.
Ignoring the tense gazes around her, both obvious and subtle, Yi Jing recalled the reasons that had repeatedly supported her in persisting with this choice on her way here – she wanted change, she wanted to change the status quo together with Yu Miao.
She dared not imagine what consequences there might be if she failed, but she knew that if she could safely get through this time, the Yi family would never be able to easily control her again.
Yi Jing took an imperceptible small breath, her expression seemingly unchanged. She looked at the righteously indignant reporter from Southern Times with a solemn, almost heavy expression, and spoke deliberately:
“According to my investigation, Director Delinke of the Supervisory Bureau and all colleagues involved in the operation did not neglect their duties in the ‘Five Districts Purge case’. All decisions were in compliance with regulations and were reasonable judgments made based on the on-site situation.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the entire venue erupted in an uproar.
Yi Jing took a deep breath and, without thinking, immediately called on a second reporter to stand up and ask a question.
She knew very well that she hadn’t finished answering the Southern Times reporter’s questions, but she deliberately wanted to completely disrupt the questioning rhythm of the people arranged by the Yi family at the scene while everyone was still caught off guard.
One by one, reporters were called on by Yi Jing, and more and more unplanned questions emerged.
It wasn’t just the Yi family’s arranged personnel who were thrown into disarray because of this.
Without prior coordination, many questions were also outside of Yi Jing’s expectations. Some reporters inadvertently mentioned confidential documents of the Supervisory Bureau, while others completely disrupted the questioning rhythm, asking about information the Yi family most wanted to conceal.
The somewhat chaotic yet very sharp questions scattered the logic that Yi Jing and the Yi family had originally organized. Yi Jing found it a bit difficult to respond, but she was mentally prepared. Her gaze focused intently during the brief moments when reporters opened their mouths to ask questions, repeatedly recalling the materials and documents she had seen before, considering as quickly as possible whether the questions posed by reporters were leading, and whether her prepared answers would raise doubts, before responding to the reporters’ questions.
The back-and-forth between reporters and Yi Jing left no room for others.
A corner of the events that had been carefully covered up by the Yi family and certain people in Jing’an City was quickly unveiled, with the truth seemingly within reach.
Standing in a distant corner observing from afar, Qi Xiao watched Yi Jing on stage, her expression aloof but answering reporters’ questions methodically and rapidly. A hint of worry appeared on Qi Xiao’s face.
She was a bit concerned that Yi Jing might face danger next, and also worried that the situation in Jing’an City might not necessarily improve after this press conference. If Mahira were still elected afterwards, they would all be in danger.
After a couple of seconds, Qi Xiao’s wrist terminal suddenly vibrated a few times.
Noticing an incoming message, Qi Xiao quickly glanced at the notification on the terminal.
The moment she saw the text, Qi Xiao’s expression changed. She looked troubled, as if seeing some difficult news, and considered for a while. A moment later, Qi Xiao raised her eyes to look in Yi Jing’s direction again, took a deep breath, and decisively turned to walk out with large strides.
Meanwhile –
The Supervisory Bureau vehicle parked in a secluded location outside the venue was also affected not long after the press conference began.
The original quiet was broken when an unfamiliar-looking woman rushed to the vicinity of the car, roughly grabbed the driver who had been strolling around waiting for Yi Jing to come out, and pushed him aside. From her actions, the woman seemed to be coercing the driver to hand over something. Soon after, the woman stuffed an object that wasn’t very clear into her clothing.
Yu Miao, who was sitting in the back seat using her terminal to handle documents, keenly sensed the change around her. She looked up and swept her gaze around, just in time to see that strange woman hiding something under her clothes.
Thanks to the convenience of being with Yi Jing every day, Yu Miao recognized at a glance that the object looked very much like a gun.
To actually resort to using a gun here!
Yu Miao’s heart chilled. She quickly pressed her hand on the armrest in the center of the back seat. The car’s security system swiftly verified her identity, and the secret weapons compartment popped out from under the seat. Yu Miao reached out to take the most familiar model of weapon, adjusted it slightly, then aimed the muzzle in the direction the intruder was approaching from.
As if knowing she had a weapon in hand, the other person didn’t get in the car at all. After the door unlocked, they first passed in an official ID card that couldn’t be forged, with the insignia of the public security system clearly imprinted in the upper left corner.
“Lin Fei from the Second Investigation Team of the City Police Department’s Detective Division. I’m here on a mission entrusted by Team Leader Qi Xiao and Security Officer Yi of the Supervisory Bureau. Miss Yu, please cooperate?”
The woman’s voice came from outside the car. Yu Miao was stunned for a moment, raising her eyes to look at that official ID card that couldn’t possibly be fake.
This kind of thing was usually only possessed by those holding important positions within government agencies who occasionally needed to access confidential documents. Even if one wanted to forge it, there was no source for the materials, and the cost would be very high. Yu Miao only recognized the several anti-counterfeiting markers on this thing because she had inadvertently seen Yi Jing take it out before.
Yu Miao’s gaze swept over the string of codes at the bottom of the official ID card, quickly decoding the information. After confirming there was no issue with the ID card’s code format, she half-skeptically raised the gun muzzle.
The dark official ID card was withdrawn by its holder, and a woman with a high ponytail, dressed in plain clothes with a cold and tough demeanor and very agile movements, appeared in the driver’s seat in place of the ID card.
She moved very quickly with an unusually clear objective, completely ignoring the highly threatening gun muzzle behind her. As soon as she got in the car, she skillfully activated various hidden function modules of the government vehicle, then directly locked down the car’s deep network functions through the secret key attached to the car key, switching the onboard system into wartime low-altitude defense full manual driving mode in one go.
The policewoman called Lin Fei rapidly adjusted the application mode of the onboard system while casually glancing back at the gun Yu Miao was holding: “Miss Yu, you’d better not waste your energy pointing that gun at me right now. I was arranged by Team Leader Qi Xiao, and I also know a bit about your situation with Security Officer Yi.
I was also involved in the ‘Five Districts Purge case’ back then. No one understands better than me what happened in between. I also very much hope that the true information can be disclosed to the public. Even if that can’t be done, it’s better than watching those troublemakers frame others while getting away scot-free themselves.”
Yu Miao frowned slightly but didn’t speak.
She stared calmly at Lin Fei’s every move, neither expressing doubt nor voicing objection, but the weapon in her hand remained aimed.
“We still have a lot to do before the related public opinion about the Five Districts incident is successfully resolved. Just now, the people arranged by Team Leader Qi outside the venue sent a message saying that a large number of non-government personnel have been mobilized in an organized manner. For safety reasons, we need to relocate now.”
Lin Fei started the car decisively, operating the extremely simple, crude yet very hardcore control system after adjusting to full manual driving mode. While observing the situation around the car, she explained their current direction to Yu Miao.
The original driver was lying outside the car door, not knowing if he had been attacked by Lin Fei or what, looking unable to stand up. Yu Miao hadn’t heard Lin Fei fire a shot, but that driver seemed unable to get up, completely unable to control his limbs normally, only able to lie in place leaning against the wall. He looked somewhat anxious, trying several times but unable to control his legs normally.
Yu Miao frowned slightly, tightening her grip on the weapon, looking suspiciously at Lin Fei in the driver’s seat.
“That driver of yours is an employee of the Supervisory Bureau. Security Officer Yi doesn’t trust her much,” Lin Fei glanced over there and said, “At least for relocating you, it can’t be done through her. Don’t worry, I didn’t do anything to her, just gave her an electric shock so she can’t catch up for a while. The discipline in the City Police Department is even stricter than the Supervisory Bureau. If I did anything more, I’d be punished.”
As Lin Fei spoke, she maneuvered the car out of its original position.
The two police vehicles that had been following Yi Jing and Yu Miao all along, which had disappeared somewhere just now, caught up again, escorting the judicial system vehicle carrying Yu Miao in the middle, one in front and one behind.
Only when she saw those two familiar vehicles following did Yu Miao truly relax her vigilance, letting out an imperceptible sigh and placing the weapon on her lap.
“We’ll probably be moving very fast next. Those people are closing in, and we must quickly break out of the encirclement,” Lin Fei said from the front.
“Where are we going?” Yu Miao asked with a slight frown.
“Not sure yet,” Lin Fei answered crisply, showing no intention of concealing anything on behalf of Yi Jing or Qi Xiao. “These things are all discussed between our team leader and your girlfriend. If things go smoothly, we’ll break through the encirclement, try to shake off these people, and get you safely back to Security Officer Yi. If things don’t go smoothly.”
“What if things don’t go smoothly?” Yu Miao furrowed her brows.
“If things don’t go smoothly, of course ensuring your safety takes priority,” Lin Fei replied without hesitation. “We’ll send you to a place where the Yi family can’t find you temporarily.”
Yu Miao’s lips pressed together tightly, her beautiful eyes showing a hint of obvious anger. She looked back at the venue gradually being left behind, looking very upset and easy to read.
They had agreed to face things together!
That little alpha was still like this!
Yu Miao was quite angry, but she didn’t dare think deeply about what kind of situation Yi Jing would face if things became serious and she left early. It would be fine if everything went smoothly, but if things really didn’t go well, how could she run away alone and leave Yi Jing by herself with the Yi family?
It was only because this wasn’t the time to get angry and throw a tantrum, otherwise she would have to grab that disobedient troublemaker and give her a good talking to.
Yu Miao lowered her eyes and bit her lip, making a mental note to settle scores with Yi Jing later, and started thinking about what to do next.
Meanwhile, back at the venue, the press conference was still ongoing.
Sitting on stage, Yi Jing knew things weren’t looking good as soon as she saw Qi Xiao turn to leave, but this was also within expectations. Yi Jing only panicked for a moment, managing not to lose her composure. While partly distracted worrying about Yu Miao’s situation, she tried her best to consider the questions from the reporters present, occasionally avoiding pointed questions from those reporters pre-arranged by the Yi family.
It had been over ten minutes since the press conference began, and these people had long since come to their senses.
They had clearly been told there would be breaking news, and many had already written their articles, just waiting a short time to publish. Now Yi Jing had changed her mind on the spot, playing them for fools and causing all their articles to be wasted. The candidates they supported would now face an even bigger public opinion crisis.
The reporters close to the political and legal system were extremely upset. They had also successively received off-site prompts from their companies through their earpieces, reminding them not to show any mercy to Yi Jing on related topics and to ask questions as sharply as possible. As a result, more and more malicious questions began to appear.
The venue manager arranged by the Yi family was not a simple character either. While dealing with reporters deliberately making things difficult, Yi Jing also had to try her best to reveal the truth, answering questions while adjusting the direction of the reporters’ questioning.
Yi Jing was on her own, tensely guarding against the schemes of several groups of people. Her nerves were stretched taut, and she gradually couldn’t spare thought for matters outside the venue. She could only leave a thread of attention on the direction Qi Xiao had left, hoping to quickly receive information about Yu Miao.
Outside the venue, the Supervisory Bureau vehicle protected by police officers was circling the city center with many overt and covert tails. At first, Lin Fei may have had some advantage, but traffic in the core area was too congested, making it very inconvenient to move. No matter what, Yu Miao’s group couldn’t outpace the other side with their numerous personnel.
Moreover, to avoid exposing their position, Lin Fei had cut off all network configurations in the car. Unable to keep up with the other side’s position in real-time, she could only judge how far the encirclement had closed in through the most primitive methods of using maps pre-saved in the vehicle system and internal communications.
“This won’t work. We probably can’t keep circling in the city center. We must change routes,” Lin Fei said, glancing out the car window and then looking up at the sky. With a grave expression, she withdrew her gaze and deftly turned the steering wheel half a circle with one hand, maneuvering the car off its current path.
In the direction Lin Fei had just looked, on the circular overpass directly opposite, a car they had only just shaken off not long ago drove past. As the two vehicles crossed paths, the other side even provocatively lowered their window for a moment.
In the air above, a flying device was tightly following their car, relentlessly occupying the aerial advantage. Even without doing anything, it could constantly expose their position.
They had to quickly enter the no-fly zone to shake off those drone-like flying devices.
The two police vehicles closely followed Lin Fei’s route, turning onto another road together, preparing to enter the no-fly zone to shake off these tails, then circle out of District 13 through other paths.
They had planned well, but the group hadn’t gone far before being scattered by the traffic flow. The police vehicle at the very end was blocked by a sudden accident, unable to break through the congested traffic.
“Not good,” Lin Fei in the driver’s seat noticed something was wrong. Without thinking, she turned the steering wheel again, spinning the car around on the spot. Flooring the accelerator, she quickly sped off in the completely opposite direction.
