- Chapter 58.1 - I Saw You in My Former Colleague’s Report
Yi Jing strode out of the elevator, turning his steps towards his own office.
The secretary’s office next door was dark, and the other assistants were not there either. Yi Jing had already let everyone else leave when he left at the end of the workday, so now most of the area around Yi Jing ‘s office was empty.
Yi Jing walked into the office alone, turned on the lights, and then unlocked the light screen.
The data analysis module in the Supervisory Office was much more user-friendly than the software built into Yi Jing ‘s terminal. It could directly utilize the computing power of the underground AI brain of the Supervisory Office, with more powerful analytical capabilities. As long as appropriate data was fed in, there was no worry about not being able to pinpoint the location of private ports assisting in smuggling.
Yi Jing sat down at his desk, opened the large file that had just been sent to the office, and moved his wrist to feed the file into the analysis software, preparing to start secondary screening after getting the initial analysis results and comparing the data.
Large amounts of data flashed across the screen, and the analysis results gradually appeared on the light screen. The main interface of the visualization module was a list of suspicious data entries, with a real-time map of Jing’an City displayed in miniature in the lower right corner. Red suspicious data points lit up one by one on the map as the analysis results appeared.
The results were intuitive, but as Yi Jing looked at the red dots scattered in different locations, his brow suddenly furrowed:
“Is there, some information missing from this file?”
Yi Jing had previously analyzed hundreds of records, and the results were completely different from what was now being analyzed in the office.
The results obtained from the analysis at home were very concentrated, clearly pointing to private ports along the coast, but now that Yi Jing had input more data, the risk points along the coast had decreased.
This data distribution didn’t seem quite right.
Yi Jing thought for a moment looking at the light screen, then turned to input the few hundred records he had previously analyzed on the terminal.
More detailed results appeared on the light screen, basically consistent with Yi Jing ‘s previous judgment.
Since there was no problem with the original file and it matched her analysis results, why would her investigation now become less clear and avoid the core of the issue after increasing the amount of data?
Yi Jing tried adding a few secondary filters, but the results remained very unclear.
Looking at the scattered and irregular suspicious data in the lower right corner of the light screen, Yi Jing frowned and opened the file that had just been sent to the office tonight, extracting the part of the records he had just analyzed and comparing it with the data sent by Qi Xiao.
A moment later, the comparison results appeared, showing no difference between the two sets of data.
“…”
Yi Jing s brow furrowed even more, his gaze falling between the two sets of data displayed side by side on the light screen.
Could it be that there was actually no problem with the customs declaration application records, and he was just overthinking?
No, Yi Jing still felt something wasn’t quite right.
This latter file was immediately requested from customs after he got the information from Qi Xiao, and it had only been a few hours since he let his secretary and assistants leave until now, including the time it took for the file to be sent from customs and wait for processing at the Supervisory Office’s data department.
There was almost no time to tamper with it in between. Who could act so quickly, keeping such a close eye on him, almost immediately responding as soon as he started to take action?
Could someone be watching him all the time?
The feeling of being monitored was not pleasant and Yi Jing ‘s face turned cold almost instantly.
Fortunately, Yi Jing ‘s rationality was still intact, and he quickly realized that it was impossible for someone to be constantly watching him at all times. Otherwise, he had done many more things worth investigating, and this matter of accessing customs data wouldn’t even rank. He would have been internally disciplined long ago, and it was impossible for someone to just observe without taking action.
So who exactly did this this time.
To time it so precisely, how familiar with his movements would they have to be to achieve this?
Yi Jing had to quickly identify the other party’s identity, otherwise having such an opponent who was so familiar with the details of his actions made him feel extremely dangerous. However, there weren’t many clues at the moment, and the only way was to slowly narrow down the suspects based on the available information.
The file only went through a few steps from customs to the Supervisory Office, so either there was a problem on the customs side, or there was a mole in the Supervisory Office’s data department.
Although Yi Jing was not surprised by the fact that colleagues in different positions within the Supervisory Office had their own private stances, suddenly facing the fact that he might have been sabotaged by a closer colleague madeYi Jing ‘s expression not look too good.
The only thing worth being grateful for was that things hadn’t been confirmed yet, and perhaps it wasn’t what he thought.
Yi Jing stared at the light screen for a moment, carefully sorting out his thoughts before getting up and going to the monitoring room on the second basement floor of the Supervisory Office building.
After AI replaced humans in carrying out most of the basic work, apart from necessary positions that still retained human staff, most of the work was completed by AI controlling and maintaining the system. Monitoring rooms, which were prone to tampering and errors, were also completely replaced by AI. If personnel without work numbers entered the Supervisory Office area, the AI would immediately issue a red name warning message.
Yi Jing went down to the monitoring center on the second basement floor of the Supervisory Office, temporarily ignoring the huge curved monitoring screens occupying three entire walls displaying real-time footage from different locations, and first went to the central control panel to look at the warning message list.
There were none.
There were no warning messages of non-Supervisory Office personnel entering for the entire two days of today and yesterday.
So, the possibility of outside personnel operating was ruled out first. It wasn’t easy to check the customs side, so tonight he would prioritize checking internally within the Supervisory Office. If no problems were found within the Supervisory Office, then he would pay attention to the customs side.
Yi Jing looked up at the central screen. As he operated the central control panel, the monitoring screens in other directions dimmed, leaving only the central screen still running.
A moment later, the monitoring footage on the central screen switched to the content captured by the camera Yi Jing had specified. The surveillance video slowly rewound along the timeline, with different people coming in and out of the data department, mostly data department staff. Even when people from other departments occasionally appeared in the frame, they were just passing by.
Yi Jing dragged the surveillance video back another five minutes, and suddenly a person appeared in the empty data department office that was outside of Yi Jing ‘s expectations.
That person was clearly not a staff member of the data department. Yi Jing was stunned for a moment, lowered his eyes to look at the terminal on his wrist, recalled the time when the equipment in the security officer’s office received the file, and then pulled the video to that time point.
Sure enough, only that one girl was sitting in the data department.
Yi Jing enlarged the image, selected the girl’s face and pulled up her resume from the database – graduated from the finance department of a first-class university directly under the local education department, belonging to the ordinary subject category, assigned to the Jing’an City Supervisory Office after passing the local selection exam, and entered the logistics department after rotation and assessment.
Logistics department.
From this file, Li An’s grades seemed quite excellent, but she ended up only staying in the logistics department?
Yi Jing frowned slightly as he moved the progress of the surveillance video. For quite a long period of time, there was only one clerk in the data department office. Later, after that girl called Li An came, she temporarily sat in the position of the data department clerk and started handling business. The file in Yi Jing ‘s office was received at this time.
Yi Jing frowned when he saw the data department clerk giving up his position to someone else. This behavior itself was against regulations, not to mention that the file that should have been processed was tampered with by someone.
However, the more important question at hand was who exactly this Li An was.
Generally, if someone wasn’t prepared, even if they got a work account for the data department, they wouldn’t have the authority to modify file contents, let alone someone from the logistics department. This Li An must have access to other higher authority work accounts, or she knew other methods of operation.
So who provided this account or these methods?
On the surface, this incident was about Li An tampering with the file sent to the Supervisory Office’s data department, but in reality, there must be more than just Li An behind it.
Which side could it be?
Yi Jing ‘s fingertips lightly tapped on the central control panel as he pondered the whole affair, somewhat lost in thought.
There were quite a few people who would be keeping an eye on her at this time, after all, with the general election approaching, she also had the ability to influence the direction of the new landscape. No matter which side she stood on, it would add weight to that side, but who could have such timely information. There shouldn’t be such a person.
Yi Jing couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard he thought. He frowned and stood in the monitoring center thinking for quite a while, until the notification sound of a new message on his terminal suddenly rang out, bringing him back to his senses.
It was Yu Miao.
[Baby, aren’t you coming home yet?]
The tricky situation on Yi Jing ‘s side didn’t affect Yu Miao, and the message on the terminal still carried a teasing tone mixed with intimacy.
“!!” Yi Jing suddenly came back to his senses.
He had promised Yu Miao he would be back soon before leaving!
It was all because of this unexpected situation here.
If it weren’t for the sudden complication in what should have been a sure thing, he probably would have already gotten the analysis results and returned to the Yi family manor. Now that something had happened, he couldn’t even be sure who was secretly tripping him up. How could he protect Yu Miao like this?
Yi Jing was a little unhappy and really wanted to hear Yu Miao’s voice, so he simply made a call.
“What’s wrong, baby?” Yu Miao quickly answered on the other end.
Hearing Yu Miao’s voice, Yi Jing ‘s mood improved slightly, but he was still a bit depressed.
He didn’t feel that this incident of someone secretly tampering couldn’t be investigated; as long as he had time, he could always solve such a small problem. He was just a bit mentally exhausted.
Every time he wanted to make an effort, changes would occur again and again, giving him small but constant resistance. This kind of troublesome business seemed to never end, and every time he thought he had found a bit of a breakthrough, he would turn around to find himself stepping into an even deeper mud pit. That dark curse called the “Yi family” seemed to never end, chasing after him relentlessly.
When would he finally be able to completely resolve this mess, throw off all the shadows and threats, and live a sweet and happy ordinary life with Yu Miao, going to work and solving routine work issues?
“Sister…” As soon as Yi Jing opened his mouth, he sounded a bit dejected and said unhappily, “I, I’m still at the Supervisory Office.”
Yu Miao paused for a moment on the other end, as if not expecting Yi Jing ‘s mood, and after a while, started coaxing softly: “What’s wrong, are you unhappy, baby?”
Yi Jing lowered his eyes, turned halfway in frustration, leaned dejectedly against the central control panel of the monitoring center and responded softly: “Mm. Something unexpected happened here again. The file that should have come to me was switched by someone in the office. Actually, this shouldn’t be a big deal, given time I can always solve it, no matter if it’s the original file or the mastermind, I should be able to find them, I just… ”
“Feel a bit tired, right?” Yu Miao was silent for a moment, empathetically finishing Yi Jing ‘s unspoken words, pondering while speaking, “Like walking into a quagmire, not life-threatening, but just difficult to move forward. Endless trivial matters surge over, like mud that can’t be peeled away, making it hard to find a breakthrough.”
Yi Jing covered his eyes with one hand and softly responded: “…Mm.”
He didn’t know how Yu Miao could understand his current feelings so clearly, but what Yu Miao said was exactly the reason he felt tired right now.
The awkwardness that was difficult to articulate was understood by someone else and Yi Jing ‘s heart ached. He felt wronged and wanted to act spoiled with Yu Miao a bit.
“They’re so annoying.”
Yi Jing muttered in a small voice with lowered eyes.
Yu Miao, holding the terminal and communicating with Yi Jing , couldn’t help but lean against the low cabinet by the bed and chuckle softly.
Yi Jing throwing a little tantrum was quite cute too.
However, the words that needed to be said should probably still be said to Yi Jing . Yu Miao hesitated a bit and lightly tapped the terminal on his wrist, then after a moment of silence suddenly asked: “Have you found out who switched the file tonight?”
“Mm, this wasn’t hard to find out at all, it was really obvious.” Yi Jing turned his head to look at the image displayed on the large monitoring screen and spoke with an unhappy expression, “It was a new person from logistics who infiltrated the data department and switched the file. She didn’t even try to hide it at all!”
Yu Miao: “Can one person alone accomplish the task of switching files?”
“Definitely not,”Yi Jing replied without thinking, his expression darkening again as he unconsciously fiddled with his diamond cuff links, answering very unhappily, “If it’s just an ordinary work account, whether it’s the data department or logistics department, there’s no authority to modify files sent by cooperating agencies.
To modify file contents, at least a deputy director level high-level work account is needed, at minimum the level of deputy director of the data department.
To be able to quickly mobilize a high-level work account before I arrived, and find manpower to modify the file in time, it’s really not easy to accomplish this. That unknown person operating behind the scenes couldn’t have used just one or two people. The Supervisory Office and our surroundings have been infiltrated to who knows what extent. So while this incident may not seem serious on the surface, it actually poses a very strong threat to us behind the scenes.”
“So, are you going to continue investigating?” Yu Miao asked again.
This question from Yu Miao made Yi Jing hesitate.
Investigate?
Yi Jing thought for a while, then sighed and said: “Investigation certainly needs to be done, but there won’t be results in the short term. This won’t be easy to investigate, and even if anomalies are discovered, I may not be able to take action. It involves too many people behind the scenes, pulling one thread affects the whole. My current position is not enough to carry out a purge within the Supervisory Office, I would need to report up the chain.”
Yu Miao softly responded with an “Mm.”
Yi Jing didn’t notice, and after pursing his lips, he quietly complained in a slightly angry tone: “I just wanted to investigate a port, and they so blatantly warn me like this, not even bothering to put on an act. Do they really think I won’t continue investigating?”
Yu Miao couldn’t help but chuckle again and asked: “So will you continue investigating?”
“Not for now.” Yi Jing answered a bit frustrated.
This incident was clearly different from previous ones.
In previous cases, Yi Jing ‘s secret investigations were mostly limited to understanding the internal affairs of the Yi family, and had never truly confronted the Yi family, so no matter how much trouble he stirred up, there wouldn’t be much danger or resistance.
But this time was different. Yi Jing had inadvertently overstepped his bounds, extending his hand too far. Although on the surface it was just a small matter of accessing customs files, the actual content had clearly directly touched upon the core interests of the Yi family. The people hiding behind the scenes immediately took action to stop him, making no effort to conceal their actions.
Such brazen behavior could already be considered an blatant warning and Yi Jing had to be somewhat cautious.
At least given the current situation, Yi Jing didn’t think rashly alerting the enemy would do him any good.
However…
Yi Jing really couldn’t figure out how that Yi family member who took action knew about his movements, to be able to respond so swiftly, faster than he had anticipated. Were they hiding under his and Yu Miao’s bed or something?
Otherwise how could they be so timely.
Or was Yu Miao’s place bugged?
But that shouldn’t be the case either. He and Yu Miao had discussed many more important things, and if the Yi family people could know about those, they should have reacted long ago. How could they only deal with such a small matter?
While Yi Jing was still puzzled, Yu Miao said: “Baby, I also have something I want to tell you.”
“Hm?” Yi Jing hadn’t quite come back to his senses yet and very naturally responded, “What is it?”
“Those few suspicious private ports, do you still want to continue investigating them right away?” Yu Miao asked.
“I probably won’t be able to investigate for now. It feels very important, and if I really push through, it might alert the old man.” Yi Jing said unwillingly.
“Mm,” Yu Miao chuckled lightly, “Then I do indeed have something to tell you. Actually, the news that you were going to access the customs files tonight was notified to Yi Mingyu by me.”
Yi Jing was stunned for a moment, blinked twice before suddenly straightening up: “What?!”
“Sister, what did you say? You told Yi Mingyu about the information? Why did you do that?” Yi Jing stood up straight in great shock, pacing back and forth a couple times, still unable to understand. He felt dizzy with anger and couldn’t think calmly for a moment. “Didn’t we agree to cooperate? Did I do something wrong? If there was an issue, why didn’t you come to me? Why did you go to Yi Mingyu first?”
Yi Jing was furious. How could anyone have higher priority with Yu Miao than him? Even for help and cooperation, it wasn’t acceptable. He was clearly the most trustworthy!
He couldn’t accept this!
“Wait a moment, I’m not trying to cooperate with her,” Yu Miao’s voice was very gentle, deliberately slowing his tone, patiently coaxing the bristling Yi Jing on the other end of the communication, “Baby, listen to me first, okay? I didn’t intend to deal with her. Of course you are more important than her.”
“Hm?” Yi Jing reluctantly became a bit more rational, slightly calming his anger, “Then tell me.”
“I just wanted to draw out Yi Mingyu and Yi Sheng’s people in the Supervisory Office.” Yu Miao said.
Yi Jing was stunned for a moment, vaguely understanding Yu Miao’s meaning.
But Yi Jing still didn’t speak, just waiting for Yu Miao to continue.
“When you mentioned that private port that might be related to the Yi family’s smuggling activities, I knew there was a problem the moment I saw it. It was something confirmed in my memories, no need to doubt. And it’s very important to the Yi family, definitely not something that can be casually investigated by just making a quick judgment and rushing over.
But I didn’t speak up before you left. I was afraid that with just a few words you wouldn’t be able to understand how deep the waters really were, and would still act rashly afterwards, so I wanted to stop you directly. In between, I considered stopping you through other means, but wasn’t successful.
Then I remembered that I had contact with Yi Mingyu a long time ago, and we still had a bit of connection, so I decided to just let Yi Mingyu take action to stop you. This kills two birds with one stone – not only stopping you from investigating this matter, but also using this opportunity to let Yi Mingyu’s subordinates flash through your line of sight, exposing them to your view, as a small help to you.
In fact, up until now, the resistance you’ve encountered is not even one ten-thousandth of the importance of that port. Compared to what exists there, Yi Mingyu’s response is like just joking with you, completely harmless, understand? If you really went over there, even Yi Chairman might personally deal with you. So promise me, don’t rashly go there, okay?”
“…”
Yi Jing was silent for a moment, roughly sorting out the cause and effect, “So, sister, you actually know which port has issues, and what’s in the port, right?”
Yu Miao: “…”
Ah, he knew his Jing Jing would ask this.
