- Chapter 57.1 - She Truly Had No Way to Resist the Little Alpha’s Cuteness
— Half a month later.
Time flew by swiftly. No major cases that stirred public opinion occurred in District 13, and everything gradually calmed down.
Night fell as usual, shrouding Jing’an City in heavy darkness. The clamorous lights gradually lit up, and different batches of people slowly leaving work from various industrial parks began to converge towards residential areas.
Under the night sky, the dark sea washed against the shore, white waves repeatedly crashing against the pier. Suddenly, a fleet of all-black vehicles, their bodies exuding power like black panthers prowling at night, drove into a deserted private pier near the famous shipping port in District 9.
This pier nominally belonged to a minor tycoon, but its actual control was in the hands of a branch of the Yi family.
It was basically Yi family’s private port.
The car in the center of the fleet stopped in the space cleared by the lead vehicles. The door opened, and the slender, tall Yi Mian stepped out.
The long black coat accentuated Yi Mian’s shoulders and waist. As the night wind blew, strands of hair fluttered, revealing a cold and arrogant expression that made her look even more formidable, like a well-maintained rifle about to lock onto its target, perfectly fitting her role of handling “dirty work” for the Yi family.
After getting out of the car, Yi Mian squinted towards the coast, taking out a cigarette while looking.
With a light ‘ding’, the crisp sound of a vintage lighter opening rang out. The blue windproof flame flickered once, lighting the lady’s cigarette held between Yi Mian’s fingers.
“How long until the agreed meeting time?” Yi Mian exhaled a puff of smoke, raising her eyes to look at the horizon where sea and sky met.
The cool sea breeze dispersed the white smoke and ruffled Yi Mian’s hair.
“Ten minutes. Ten minutes is the final deadline,” the subordinate standing slightly behind Yi Mian lowered his head respectfully and answered.
“Ten minutes, not bad. Not too long, let’s wait,” Yi Mian said calmly, her tone carrying a hint of casual malice. “I hope that foreigner can come obediently and not cause me any more trouble.”
Time ticked by minute by minute. The hands on Yi Mian’s mechanical wristwatch silently made circle after circle. When the eighth minute arrived, a speedboat finally appeared on the horizon, rapidly cutting through the waves towards the pier.
“Miss Yi.” The subordinate beside her tactfully handed over a pair of binoculars.
Yi Mian took the binoculars and looked, her gaze falling on the heavily wrapped, somewhat gloomy-looking foreigner in the back of the speedboat. She carefully examined the man’s figure for a moment, then calmly said, “The person has arrived. Prepare to receive.”
“Yes!”
The hidden personnel quickly got out of their vehicles, retrieving pitch-black firearms and weapons from various inconspicuous corners, swiftly taking control of the entire pier.
Two minutes later, the speedboat carrying only two people stopped at the shore. The driver in the front didn’t move, only the tall white man in the back, dressed somewhat shabbily yet heavily wrapped, got off the boat.
The man looked weary, but after coming ashore his gaze quickly and precisely scanned several points most suitable for sniping and ambush.
“Yi, is this how you welcome me?” The white man spoke in Mandarin with a heavy Western European accent.
“Don’t be nervous, this isn’t aimed at you,” Yi Mian smiled and spread her hands, indicating she had no ill intentions. “It’s just a precaution, you know. The family has already expended great effort to transfer you. There’s no need to kill you when we’re about to succeed.”
“So what will happen to me? Supernova is finished. I won’t be able to return to Western Europe for years.” The white man looked exhausted, unable to continue sparring with Yi Mian, and switched back to his more comfortable German.
Yi Mian effortlessly followed suit, smoothly changing languages: “According to the family’s emergency plan, you’ll stay in the East Pacific Territory for about half a year. Besides retraining, you’ll also need to familiarize yourself with a new identity.
The family will arrange an ‘accidental death’ for you. After the case review period passes, we’ll arrange for you to use a new identity to expand into new territories in other regions. Don’t worry, there’s still a new career waiting for you. You’ll soon rise again.”
“I won’t just die before the new career starts, right?” The white man raised his eyes to look at Yi Mian.
“Of course not,” Yi Mian curled her lips in a very fake smile. “But I hope you remember, there’s a limit to how many mistakes a person can bear. Not everyone gets a chance to start over. Don’t wait until things are irreparable to regret your carelessness.”
The white man turned his dark eyes, looking at Yi Mian with a heavy gaze: “I understand.”
Yi Mian smiled and stepped back, unprecedentedly opening the car door for someone, gesturing for the white man to quickly get in the car to be transferred.
But the white man didn’t dare to actually get in, cautiously looking at the wide open car door and asking: “Aren’t you leaving with me?”
“Of course not,” Yi Mian revealed a hint of a fake smile, extinguishing her cigarette in the ashtray handed over by her subordinate. A trace of contempt flashed in her eyes.
“I’m only here to confirm whether you’re alive or dead. Now that you’re safe, I should go do other things. Those people in the Western European branch who haven’t been dealt with yet should be thoroughly liquidated.”
Laurence, the white man who had experienced several pursuits and near-death escapes across multiple locations before barely making it alive to the East Pacific Territory, immediately understood Yi Mian’s meaning. He stopped asking what exactly Yi Mian was going to do and ducked into the car.
Yi Mian quickly closed the car door and made a gesture to her subordinates behind her.
Half of the personnel waiting in the shadows immediately split off, swiftly and in a well-trained manner got into cars, and along with the car Laurence had escaped into, smoothly drove out of the pier.
Yi Mian watched the fleet leave, lit another cigarette using her subordinate’s hand, and stood in the smoke quickly dispersed by the sea breeze, looking in the direction the fleet had left with an inscrutable expression, lost in thought.
“Miss Yi, shall we take action now?” The subordinate holding the ashtray waited for a moment before tactfully asking.
“Mm, let’s go,” Yi Mian seemed to have just snapped back to reality, slightly narrowing her eyes before stepping back and turning to walk towards the car she had arrived in.
The driver skillfully turned the car around. As the car changed direction, Yi Mian glanced at the sea outside the window and flicked her hand, tossing the now useless self-destructing information storage device into the ocean.
“To the airport.”
—
The same night also fell on the core district.
In the Yi family manor, lights came on as usual. Many halls remained lit even when unoccupied, illuminating the entire estate while constantly prepared for potential use.
Yi Jing was still staying at Yu Miao’s residence with her – the two of them were “cooperating”.
In the flickering lamplight, two figures embraced. One person’s passionate kisses fell on the other’s lips, their breaths intertwining with a faint scent of pheromones, the two embracing intimately.
According to Yi Jing, timely intimacy could increase trust. She didn’t like abandoning their “couple” relationship after establishing an alliance.
— “You even promised to marry me, you can’t go back on that,” Yi Jing had said to Yu Miao after laying all cards on the table, then clung to her.
Yu Miao always felt that Yi Jing preferred the couple relationship over being allies although she preferred it too.
“We were already a couple, you agreed to be with me, you can’t deceive me. Now that we’ve been honest with each other and agreed to be allies, we should be even closer,” Yi Jing said while kissing the corner of Yu Miao’s lips.
Yu Miao parted her lips slightly, her breathing a bit rapid. She kissed Yi Jing back while hugging her shoulders tightly. Their posture became a bit too ambiguous for a moment.
“Mmm…” Yi Jing got a bit carried away, unconsciously deepening the kiss. One hand caressed Yu Miao’s back while the other supported her leg, as if wanting to fall onto the bed.
“Didn’t you say you had something important to tell me?” Yu Miao sensed Yi Jing’s mood but didn’t stop her actions, only asking breathlessly while continuing to kiss her.
Yi Jing kept licking and kissing the corner of Yu Miao’s lips, taking a while to register what she had said. She sighed and said, “Sister, you’re changing the subject again.”
“You’re the one who said you had something to tell me.” Yu Miao smiled and leaned in to give Yi Jing a light kiss.
“Alright,” Yi Jing pursed her lips unhappily. “There is indeed some information I wanted to follow up on, which I just received not long ago.”
Yu Miao made a sound of acknowledgment but still clung softly to Yi Jing without getting up. Her shallow gaze swept over Yi Jing’s brows and eyes from extremely close, her expression gentle and unaware.
Half a month had passed since the two laid their cards on the table. A newer, more wondrous connection had developed between her and Yi Jing. At first, Yu Miao thought “cooperation” meant the two of them being honest with each other – she no longer had to hide things from Yi Jing, could do what she wanted directly, and they would selectively reach agreements.
But now she realized her understanding of cooperation might be a bit different from what Yi Jing meant.
Yi Jing was far more willing to go all in than she had imagined. After saying they would cooperate, she recklessly included Yu Miao in her circle of trust without reservation.
Yu Miao felt a bit happy and very comfortable.
“Look, this is a document just sent over from the city police,” Yi Jing held up her terminal to show Yu Miao her work files. “Qi Xiao has been investigating an old smuggling case recently. Besides the customs declaration records of the company suspected of smuggling, there’s some strange information mixed in this entry-exit document, like this travel route that’s declared every half month is very suspicious.
Apart from other scattered travel item declarations, all the companies behind this very regular declaration record can be traced back to connections with the Yi family with a bit of digging. I feel there must be some issue here, so I’m preparing to investigate all the ports involved. Perhaps there will be some unusual discoveries.”
Ports?
Yu Miao snapped back to attention and thought for a moment. With the Yi family’s huge business and involvement in many prohibited goods, it was normal to have fixed transportation routes.
However, no matter what, truly dangerous contraband wouldn’t be chosen to enter and exit in a place with strict security like District 13.
That would be no different from self-destruction.
“Are you going to investigate other districts in the city?” Yu Miao tilted her head slightly to look at Yi Jing and asked.
“Not sure yet,” Yi Jing stared at the document in front of her, her fingertips sliding over the built-in data analysis software on the terminal. “The timing isn’t great right now, I can’t really leave my official duties in District 13. If it’s not an urgent matter, it will probably have to be pushed back until after the election. But I still want to analyze these nearly 100 customs declaration records a bit more. I feel like there should be some key content hidden in here, maybe we can find information on some key figures.”
As Yi Jing spoke, she pulled up various different files in front of Yu Miao, constantly trying to parse the information and input it into the data analysis software to find a breakthrough.
What she said to Yu Miao was just casual talk, completely unintentional, but Yu Miao suddenly froze.
Key figures?
Hidden memories were triggered, and an event that was completely forgotten at first suddenly jumped into her mind.
Speaking of key figures at this point in time, had the Yi family already brought back that troublesome character who caused a big stir in the Western European territory and was almost internationally wanted?
Buried memories surfaced, and Yu Miao suddenly recalled that in her previous life, the Yi family’s actions were much more brazen than now.
Probably because the situation had no uncertainties, with both the election and subsequent business in the bag, even during Jing’an City’s internal martial law period, they dared to hold a grand banquet at sea after bringing back a ticking time bomb of a character to the core district.
The extravagant banquet was full of debauchery everywhere, in keeping with the Yi family’s usual style. Yu Miao was also present when the sea banquet was held. She still remembered catching a distant glimpse of the European man called Laurence, the protagonist of the banquet, through the guests indulging in wine and pleasure. The gloomy, restrained look on his face –
He was not an easy character to deal with.
She had thought that someone like Laurence, who had made such a big mistake and almost destroyed half of the Yi family’s plans in the Western European territory, would surely die. Unexpectedly, after the Yi family took Laurence away, he disappeared for a long time. Then, during the Supernova Group incident when the Yi family’s business suffered a slight setback, their performance suddenly soared again.
The North American branch group that was once half-dead was somehow revitalized by someone unknown, leaping up to occupy most of the underground market in the Americas, taking the Yi family’s assets up another level.
At first, Yu Miao didn’t think much of it. After all, she encountered many people every day in a place like the Yi family. She and Laurence had only met once, so she couldn’t immediately think of him.
It wasn’t until later when Yu Miao continued to probe into the group’s situation and accidentally obtained clues from a secret acquisition document of the Xie family. After much investigation, she finally discovered that the person in charge who revitalized the North American region was actually Laurence, whose identity had been changed by the Yi family and appearance altered.
Thinking carefully, he was indeed a key figure.
If the Yi family was allowed to receive Laurence, who knows what would happen later. Perhaps he could really help the Yi family catch their breath at a critical moment and expand their power. That wouldn’t be good. This recent period was a rare opportunity, perhaps Laurence’s whereabouts could be found and he could be dealt with in advance.
But when to take action?
Yu Miao leaned against Yi Jing, narrowing her eyes coldly to consider, when Yi Jing suddenly spoke up beside her, her attention seemingly still on the previous topic:
“There are also these three ports that I feel are not quite right. Although they’re called ‘private’ ports, which ‘private’ thing in Jing’an City doesn’t have connections to the Yi family? The locations of these three ports are not far from several commonly used major ports. By sailing a bit further, their routes could intersect with the shipping lanes of other major ports. A careful investigation might yield some results.”
Yu Miao’s attention was suddenly pulled back. She unconsciously glanced at the light screen in front of her, originally intending to respond to Yi Jing’s words, when her gaze was suddenly caught by a familiar port name. Her hand at her side clenched tightly.
Yi Jing had actually found something crucial.
Yu Miao looked at the little alpha’s serious and focused, almost clear profile, not knowing if it was Yi Jing’s talent or ability.
Every time she investigated suspicious events, Yi Jing always hit the nail on the head. Just by analyzing travel route application information that looked suspicious but had no conclusions yet, she could accidentally stumble upon the Yi family’s secret transfer point in Jing’an City.
Yu Miao didn’t know much about the other two ports among those three, but one was indeed controlled by the Yi family. Moreover, several people in power in the Yi family were very confident about this port, storing large amounts of contraband inside that couldn’t withstand scrutiny.
If Yi Jing really brought people there to mess things up!
Now everything was still unrevealed, and Old Master Yi might not be able to guess that Yi Jing wanted to go against the Yi family. Her Jing still had some freedom of movement.
But if she really barged in front of Old Master Yi, with Jing’s current abilities she absolutely wouldn’t be able to escape the Yi family’s control. The evidence obtained also couldn’t really be exposed, it would only be pushed deeper. Moreover, it would alert them, causing the Yi family to move the port. By then it would be difficult to find their new base of operations.
Yi Jing herself would also be exposed and guarded against in advance, unable to do anything she wanted to do.
Yu Miao frowned and considered for a moment, feeling that if she told her little alpha now that there really was a problem with that port and it couldn’t be investigated further, given the little alpha’s stubborn personality, she would most likely still keep an eye on that port wanting to help her.
It wouldn’t be good if exposed.
