- Chapter 46 - The Corner of Yu Miao's Mouth Curled Slightly as She Pretended to Sleep
Yi Jing, who had played the role of a little puppy all night, was woken early the next morning by work.
It was only 6:30 a.m., and she’d gone to bed close to 4 a.m. If Yu Miao hadn’t made her sleep, she might have pulled an all-nighter. Truthfully, she didn’t want to work at all. If given the choice, Yi Jing would much rather stay wrapped in the warm blankets with Yu Miao.
But that wasn’t an option, work couldn’t wait.
Just yesterday, a major explosion had occurred at the mayor’s residence. The police and various departments under the mayor’s office were bound to be overwhelmed. Given the gravity of the situation, even certain units in the judiciary were expected to work overtime. And with Yi Jing delayed by her trip to District 3, a mountain of tasks had piled up at the Supervisory Office, leaving her no room for rest.
So, despite her reluctance, Yi Jing had to keep going.
Thankfully, it was still early. The driver and secretary from the Supervisory Office hadn’t yet arrived at the manor. Yi Jing got up quietly without disturbing Yu Miao and headed downstairs for breakfast.
The butler assigned to her had already coordinated with her secretary. Breakfast arrived at Yu Miao’s residence at just the right time, so Yi Jing could eat immediately.
She removed her terminal and set it aside. The built-in projection module automatically displayed the morning news.
With the anchor’s calm voice as background, news highlights rolled by. The top story was still about the progress of the recent government transition and general election. The rest covered minor merchant disputes.
As expected, there was no mention of the two explosions at the mayor’s house not even a reference to an “incident.”
After watching briefly, Yi Jing turned off the news and switched to the Supervisory Office’s internal network.
At times like this, internal systems offered far more reliable information.
She had only meant to check briefly, but as soon as she logged into her security officer account, a bold, blood-red martial law order popped up, pinned above all work directories, impossible to miss.
Martial law?
Yi Jing took a bite of toast and opened the file using gesture controls.
The order didn’t explain the full details of the incident. It simply stated that for the next three days, inspections would intensify on roads entering and leaving District 13. In addition to traffic controls, auxiliary departments were to remain alert, manage election-related tensions, and respond appropriately.
Yi Jing skimmed the road listings but didn’t focus too much on the specifics.
After all, if someone was really being hunted, the police wouldn’t restrict themselves to the locations mentioned. What caught her attention was the “three-day” timeframe.
Was the mayor truly confident they could solve the case in three days? Or, if they failed, would they implement some sort of Plan B?
Yi Jing recalled the “mysterious figure” who’d bombed the mayor’s mansion, possibly just before and after her arrival and doubted it would be so easy to catch them.
Strangely, a part of her hoped that person wouldn’t be found. Even though the one she cared most about was now sleeping peacefully upstairs, she couldn’t explain why she felt that way.
She frowned, suppressing the odd emotion that bubbled up inside. Her fingers moved fluidly over the terminal, switching between work interfaces as she absentmindedly reviewed the Supervisory Office’s current workload and considered her role in the unfolding chaos.
From the looks of it, she remained uninvolved in the explosion. Just a passerby, caught up in a storm, doing a few minor things here and there things that didn’t matter and went unnoticed. She only needed to focus on her duties as a security officer.
The only loose end now was the chip found in her car.
That was the sole thing that might link her to this incident.
A minor issue, but troubling nonetheless.
Even though she didn’t know who had used her, the fact that she had unknowingly been placed at risk was enough to make anyone uneasy.
Fortunately, she hadn’t suffered any consequences so far. On the contrary, it was good to know early that such a hidden player or force existed. Her next step was to narrow the scope and uncover who it was.
After all, the body’s original owner was still part of this world. Some things couldn’t be avoided, no matter how much she wanted to. But for now, she decided it was better to check on Yu Miao first.
With a bit of anticipation, Yi Jing closed her terminal, her mood lightening instantly. She ran to the bathroom to wash her hands, used a fruit-flavored mouthwash, and then hurried upstairs.
Yu Miao lay on her side with her back to the door, showing no signs of waking.
Yi Jing tiptoed to the bed, lay at the edge, and gazed at her for a while. Then, softly, she called, “Sister?”
No response.
“Yu Miao?” she tried again, gently propping herself up. “Sister?”
Still no reaction.
“Still sleeping?” she mumbled, a bit disappointed. “Guess we really stayed up too late last night…”
“Mm.” Yu Miao responded faintly.
“You’re awake?” Yi Jing’s eyes sparkled with joy.
“Don’t be noisy,” Yu Miao muttered groggily, clearly wanting to sleep more.
“Oh, okay,” Yi Jing whispered obediently, her eyes still bright. “I have to head to work. I’ll be leaving soon.”
“…Mm.”
Yi Jing sighed lightly and leaned in to kiss Yu Miao’s cheek. “I just wanted a kiss,” she murmured, “or I won’t have the energy to get through the day. I hate everyone at the Supervisory Office. I don’t want to see them. Kiss me? Don’t you miss me?”
Yu Miao, still pretending to be asleep, couldn’t help the faint curl at the corners of her mouth.
Yi Jing, lost in her own rambling, didn’t notice. With another sigh, she was about to leave until an arm suddenly pulled her back.
A faint fragrance filled her senses, and the soft skin radiated the comforting warmth of someone just woken from sleep.
Yu Miao pulled her in and gently kissed the corner of her eye.
The kiss was brief but left a burning sensation behind. Yi Jing’s heart skipped a beat, her mind momentarily dazed.
Without a word, Yu Miao retreated under the blanket, intending to go back to sleep.
But Yi Jing, after a stunned two seconds, suddenly pounced on her, hugging her tightly and planting a kiss. “I knew you loved me best!” she declared, beaming.
Then she dashed off joyfully, utterly unprofessional and nothing like a security officer.
Yu Miao: “…”
Sitting in bed, her hair tousled from the nuzzling, Yu Miao stared blankly for a moment then chuckled, helplessly.
This sleep-disturbing little devil.
Yi Jing bounded downstairs, glanced back to make sure Yu Miao’s door was closed, then cheerfully headed outside.
Thanks to Yu Miao’s magical presence, her mood was completely lifted. Even the unpleasant fact that someone had planted a chip in her car didn’t seem so dreadful anymore.
Yu Miao didn’t mind her. After kissing Yi Jing, she nestled back under the covers, intending to sleep again. Unexpectedly, Yi Jing froze for two seconds, then suddenly pounced on her, hugged her tightly, and nuzzled against her, saying clingingly, “I knew you loved me the most!”
Then Yi Jing dashed off happily, completely undignified nothing like a proper security officer.
Yu Miao: “…”
Sitting on the bed with her hair tousled from the nuzzling, Yu Miao sat still for a moment before letting out a helpless laugh. She truly didn’t feel like sleeping anymore.
…This little devil who always disturbs my rest.
Yi Jing ran downstairs, looked back to confirm Yu Miao’s bedroom door was shut, and then walked cheerfully toward the front entrance.
Thanks to Yu Miao’s “magic,” her mood was light and carefree. Even the unpleasant fact that someone had planted a chip in her car didn’t seem so bothersome anymore.
As she adjusted her cuffs, she approached the low-speed vehicle designated for use within the manor grounds. It was already waiting.
Though the Yi family manor was expansive, it didn’t take long to drive out. Especially since Yu Miao’s residence was closer to the main gate than somewhere like Jinghe Garden, the journey was brief.
At the dispatch station near the gate, the driver was already waiting. Yi Jing stepped out of the vehicle and approached him directly.
“Security Officer, are we heading straight to the office today?” the driver asked softly, opening the car door for her.
“Mm, yes,” Yi Jing replied without glancing sideways.
The explosion at the mayor’s residence was indeed a high-profile case enough to make the city’s top officials tense but it had little to do with her. Unless the investigation revealed negligence, dereliction of duty, or a deliberate act involving a colleague, it wasn’t within a security officer’s jurisdiction.
Of course, this could’ve been a good opportunity to curry favor or get closer to those in power. But given her identity, showing up uninvited might just frighten the mayor instead.
Yi Jing curled her lips in a faint, self-mocking smile as she got into the car.
The driver shut the door and jogged around to the front seat.
While he wasn’t looking, Yi Jing leaned forward to check the spot where she’d found the chip the day before but her fingertips touched nothing.
…Gone?
She reached out again in disbelief. Still nothing. The area was smooth and clean, no adhesive residue, no trace at all.
Could she have remembered it wrong?
Impossible. The ring from yesterday was clearly one size too large for her. Someone had removed the chip.
Since discovering it, she’d only had contact with the driver and her secretary.
Yes, others at the dispatch station technically had access to judicial vehicles, but official cars couldn’t be tampered with casually. They didn’t have keys, and any forced entry would trigger the onboard system and alert the central network. She would’ve heard about it immediately.
That left only one other moment, when she parked the car outside a dessert shop downtown. But that had been a last-minute decision. No one could’ve anticipated it.
So the person who took the chip had to be someone with direct access overnight her driver, her secretary, or someone who used them as pawns.
But neither of them seemed capable of acting alone. Someone had to be giving orders.
Could it be someone within the Yi family?
Possibly. There were certainly people in the family with the capability but not necessarily the standing to act independently. After all, the Yi family and the mayor were supposed to be on the same side.
Had there been a rift? Was someone in the family trying to make a move against the mayor?
Or was it someone from the Supervisory Office?
Her driver had been assigned by the Office. And Delinke had long had a strained relationship with the political-legal system. If she hadn’t changed her plans last night, this car would’ve returned to the office. The logic tracked.
Could it really be Delinke or someone under her?
Yi Jing’s gaze darkened. The warm mood brought on by kissing Yu Miao had completely evaporated. Suspicion swirled both toward the Yi family and the Supervisory Office.
Yet something still didn’t add up. That gnawing sense of unease lingered. Something was missing in her deductions. Her thoughts kept circling, looping back on themselves.
The driver glanced back in the mirror and asked, “Security Officer, did you forget something? Should we go back?”
“No, no need,” Yi Jing replied calmly, lifting her eyes to meet his.
If either the Yi family or the Supervisory Office was involved, they would need this driver’s cooperation. Showing her hand now would only alert whoever was pulling strings.
Yi Jing closed her eyes and masked her emotions. “Keep driving.”
Her mind continued to race. Though the missing chip threw her off balance, at least she’d narrowed the list of suspects. Still, this turn of events had caught her off guard.
She had initially thought the culprit must be in the Supervisory Office. But no, she couldn’t jump to conclusions. Nothing was certain yet.
More pressing matters required her attention. The case in District 3 was still unresolved, and the Zhao family was still maneuvering behind the scenes. Since she’d already decided to sever ties completely, there was no turning back.
It wasn’t just a few arrogant women that she disliked it was most of Jing’an City.
So first, she would deal with that matter. As for the chip, she’d keep watching.
Whoever used her would eventually run into another problem they couldn’t solve on their own and they’d come knocking again.
