- Chapter 26.1 - Single Woman A Expresses Despair at This Depraved World
Time flew by and another weekend passed. Yi Jing, who had been eagerly awaiting the start of the banquet, finally reached the next plot point – the date of the banquet was officially set, and all those scumbags Yi Jing had previously investigated were about to make their appearances.
Yi Jing stood with Yi Heng on the balcony of a small building near the aircraft landing pad at the entrance of the Yi family estate. Yi Heng gazed into the distance towards the landing pad and said:
“Families like the Xies, and the Fan, Lei, and Chen families will definitely come. They’re our family’s biggest business partners, always dealing with issues together. They certainly won’t miss this event.”
Yi Jing knew about these families. Their key figures had all been named in secret documents, without exception carrying multiple serious crimes. They could be thrown in prison immediately and it would be fully justified.
But now was not the time to deal with them.
The evidence was insufficient, and the timing wasn’t right.
“So, what about Xu Zaixi?” Yi Jing asked.
“Why are you asking about her?” Yi Heng looked at Yi Jing with shock, his face full of disbelief.
“What’s wrong with her?” Yi Jing looked at Yi Heng.
Yi Jing had previously looked into Xu Zaixi, but couldn’t find much on her yet. Her background seemed clean, with no criminal record. There were a few suspected incidents of fighting, but she was quickly cleared of suspicion and released. Career-wise, she didn’t personally control any companies, only holding a vice president position at one of the Yi family’s subsidiaries – just as Yu Miao had said, she was working for the Yi family.
“Well, there’s nothing really wrong with her,” Yi Heng began with a strange expression, “To be honest, she had no choice but to take an unorthodox path. I don’t like interacting with her mainly because of her personality issues. She’s a bit too unscrupulous in how she does things.”
“Oh?” Yi Jing looked at Yi Heng. “How so?”
Yi Heng shrugged: “It’s all rich family scandals, hard to explain briefly. Basically, her background isn’t very respectable. She has no family support and had a tough time in the past. But her maternal family has some distant connection to our Yi family, so she ended up attaching herself to us in the end.
Because her family didn’t help her much and even somewhat rejected her in the past – there were even rumors that someone once tried to kill her – she basically doesn’t deal with her own family now that she’s risen up in recent years.
With no attachments before her and no concerns behind her, she only listens to Vice President Yi Mian’s orders. She’s a very pure fanatic.”
“What? Yi Mian?” Yi Jing frowned slightly as she murmured, “How could someone like that have no criminal record?”
If she works under Yi Mian, wouldn’t she have to handle some dirty business?
Could it be that this person’s information also needs to be checked in the upper levels of Phantom City?
But is Xu Zaixi’s level really worth that?
The people she had seen before, even if not family head level, were future pillars of the group. It was understandable for big shots to protect that type of person, but would Xu Zaixi also get such treatment?
Yi Heng hadn’t considered this aspect, and just said with some exasperation: “Have you developed some kind of obsession from investigating cases? I told you not to cause trouble at this time. If anything really happens, even your aunt will have a hard time dealing with it.”
“It’s not that serious,” Yi Jing casually replied.
She didn’t plan to do anything for now.
“You don’t look convincing.” Yi Heng gave her a ‘I’d be a fool to believe you’ look. His gaze shifted and he suddenly raised his hand towards the aircraft landing pad. “Oh? There she is, Xu Zaixi.”
Yi Jing was startled and looked up in the direction Yi Heng indicated.
A tall young woman walked out of the aircraft landing pad. She had long straight red hair flowing loose, and wore sunglasses that obscured her features. She was dressed in a well-tailored casual suit, though the exact style couldn’t be made out from a distance. But Yi Jing sensed she was wearing plenty of accessories, with a flashy and ostentatious style.
“She doesn’t seem to have many friends,” Yi Jing observed.
“Of course not,” Yi Heng replied unsurprised, “Her personality is too scary. She’s ruthless to everyone. Who would dare to be sure that being friendly with her won’t result in getting bitten back?”
“Is that so,” Yi Jing said softly.
Being ruthless to everyone was actually better.
If she had no feelings for the Yi family or any of these other people, it would be easier for her to betray them. Being unscrupulous in her methods meant that when necessary, this person wouldn’t be averse to siding with a certain faction.
Perhaps Xu Zaixi could become an asset in her efforts to bring down the Yi family and eliminate everyone who did bad things and might bully Yu Miao.
But that would have to wait until she got Yu Miao’s information back first.
“I’ll go over there for a bit,” Yi Jing said.
“Hey, hey, hey? Where are you going?” Yi Heng was left stunned on the small building, calling out in shock to Yi Jing’s retreating back.
— She planned to “accidentally” run into Xu Zaixi.
This banquet would last a full five days, and the scale was extraordinary. Even now, dessert tables and champagne were set up on the Yi family’s cleared lawns, with dedicated servers watching over the children brought by the arriving guests. The guests arriving one after another were all exchanging greetings with the Yi family representatives at the main residence. Yi Jing guessed Xu Zaixi would definitely go there as well.
The mental map of the Yi family estate she had secretly memorized earlier came in handy. Yi Jing circled around the estate a few times based on her memory, then took a shortcut to reach the vicinity of the main residence.
This long corridor after passing through this door should lead to the main residence, right? If she hurried, she could probably still intercept Xu Zaixi.
Yi Jing was looking at her terminal to check the information Yi Heng had sent her about the aircraft landing pad while grasping the door handle of that large door. However, just as she was about to push the door open, Yi Jing felt a bit of resistance from the other side of the door.
What’s this?
Yi Jing looked up in surprise, and found herself face to face with an unexpected person – red long hair, a pretty face, a custom casual suit with flashy and tacky accessories, plus a smooth smile and eyes that always made people feel a bit uncomfortable.
This face was clearly identical to the photo Yu Miao had given her.
Is it Xu Zaixi? Yi Jing released her hand without changing her expression, though she was actually a bit confused inside.
If Xu Zaixi moved so quickly, shouldn’t she have already reached the main residence? What was she doing coming out here now?
Yi Jing quietly sized up Xu Zaixi, considering whether to speak up.
Logically, it would be better for her to make contact with Xu Zaixi as soon as possible. But she hadn’t completely forgotten the experience of accompanying her aunt to negotiate projects in her past life.
People with leverage rarely speak first. She did have something she needed to get back from Xu Zaixi, but she didn’t want Xu Zaixi to guess this.
What if Xu Zaixi used that item to threaten her, or destroyed it in advance?
“You’re that young police officer from the younger generation? Yi Jing?” Yi Jing hadn’t spoken, but Xu Zaixi spoke up first, her gaze sweeping over Yi Jing with an ambiguous smile, her tone fairly mild.
“And you are?” Yi Jing responded.
“Xu Zaixi,” the woman Yi Jing had already targeted smiled and extended her hand to Yi Jing, “If we’re counting from the Yi family side, I suppose I could be considered your older cousin. But our family relationship is already quite distant, so we haven’t met before.”
“Oh.” Yi Jing shook her hand, thinking to herself ‘took the bait’.
She knew the police officer identity would be useful. No matter who it was, they would try to take advantage of it.
She herself might be a bit slow, not very sensitive to changes in the outside world. But these natives who had to rely on the Yi family to survive and had lived in this world for over 20 years would certainly not miss even the slightest change in the outside world. Even if Xu Zaixi hadn’t thought about trying to get close to her, she must have known about her long ago.
“I’ve heard of you,” Yi Jing replied flatly. “Hello.”
“The newly appointed police officer has heard of me?” Xu Zaixi smiled apologetically, “That’s quite surprising. I thought I was a law-abiding good citizen.”
Yi Jing raised her eyes slightly after hearing this.
Let’s not even mention how working under Yi Mian could have anything to do with being law-abiding. Just from the meaning in her words, it seemed she wanted to chat with Yi Jing?
It was strange. Someone who did dirty work under Yi Mian chatting with her, a police officer specializing in investigating officials – what was going on?
Something wasn’t quite right. Yi Jing thought for a moment and then asked: “Why aren’t you going to the main residence? I thought Vice President Yi and Yi Mingyu were both over there.”
“Ah,” Xu Zaixi lowered her eyes slightly to conceal her expression, a faint smile lingering at the corners of her lips, “It’s a bit too noisy over there, don’t you think? I don’t particularly enjoy small talk, so I wanted to find a quieter place to stay for a while.”
Doesn’t like small talk.
Was it really that she didn’t like small talk, or was it because her work content and methods were too special, making it inconvenient to engage in small talk with people?
Or perhaps Xu Zaixi had offended someone and was now trying to avoid them?
Yi Jing instinctively judged that this person had some issue, but she also wanted to see what kind of tricks Xu Zaixi could pull, so she said: “Well, this is a good choice then. Few people, quiet.”
Xu Zaixi turned her head to look at the environment of the corridor, nodding and saying: “What about you? Why aren’t you going to the main residence? Vice President Yi and the others should be looking for you, right?”
“Quite a coincidence,” Yi Jing smiled lightly, “I don’t like small talk either.”
Xu Zaixi was stunned for a moment, but quickly recovered and smiled as she replied: “Then we’re quite fated. We both find socializing troublesome and both chose this place.”
“Indeed. Why don’t we chat for a bit?” Yi Jing gestured towards the outer corridor.
She also wanted to see what exactly was wrong with this Xu Zaixi.
“Sure.” Xu Zaixi agreed immediately, stepping aside to clear the way into the corridor.
Yi Jing passed by her into the corridor, then gestured towards the direction away from the main residence and said: “This way?”
“Alright.” Xu Zaixi nodded.
The two chatted casually as they walked along the corridor for a while. Yi Jing was just about to ask Xu Zaixi why she was in such a hurry when she heard a somewhat familiar arrogant voice from behind:
“Hey, you bastard, what are you hiding from? So you ran all the way here, huh? What, you dare to do things but don’t dare to face your family? Oh! and who’s this? Have you roped in another accomplice to protect you?”
Yi Jing was startled and turned to look back.
No wonder it sounded familiar. That disgusting thing that had pinned Yu Miao in the bushes that day had appeared behind them again.
This damned fellow – Yi Jing hadn’t had time to deal with her that day and let her escape in a moment of hesitation. Now she dared to appear in front of Yi Jing again? Was her life too comfortable?
This time that idiot didn’t appear alone. She was accompanied by two women Yi Jing didn’t recognize well, who looked more like alphas.
Those two women of unknown identity had somewhat strange expressions. They just coldly stared at Xu Zaixi beside Yi Jing, and seemed to want to make that jerk shut up, but that fool obviously hadn’t noticed.
The situation was a bit complicated now. Yi Jing should probably observe what was going on before taking action, but with that idiot here, Yi Jing couldn’t care about others anymore. She just barely suppressed her anger and stared directly at that person, asking: “You again. Haven’t had enough bullets? Did you regret that I didn’t really kill you last time?”
That idiot was clearly startled too. She had just arrogantly thrown out some harsh words, but now she stumbled back two steps in shock, blurting out: “Why is it you again?”
“Zhao Qin, who is this?” The alpha woman standing not far from Zhao Qin steadied her slightly and asked.
“It’s that Yi Jing,” Zhao Qin turned her head and said softly to that alpha woman with a ‘we’re dead’ expression, “The one the Yi family just took back recently. What a pain, she just recently became a police officer, much harder to deal with than others. I said before that I found an omega at the Yi estate who looked extraordinarily beautiful, and I’ve been wanting to get my hands on her to play with. But unfortunately someone beat me to it. It was her who did it.”
Yi Jing didn’t expect she would still dare to mention it, and with such a disgusting expression too.
A wave of anger suddenly surged up from the bottom of her heart. Yi Jing narrowed her eyes slightly, clenched her fists and walked straight towards Zhao Qin without a word.
“What? Miss Yi, wait a moment, we didn’t mean to target you. Hey!” The alpha woman beside her seemed to want to stop Yi Jing, but as soon as she got close, Yi Jing twisted her arm behind her back.
The other younger-looking girl saw her sister at a disadvantage and was greatly alarmed. She hurriedly came over to intervene.
