- When the Possessive Omega Fell for Me
- Chapter 17 - Dealing with that Chen Feng fellow isn't very pleasant, is it?
The old mayor in the center of the venue seemed to have finally finished exchanging pleasantries. He patted the arm of the veteran tycoon in front of him, whom Yi Jing wasn’t very familiar with, and finally showed signs of taking a seat.
The banquet hall was large. After the heavyweight guests in the first row were seated, others could also take their seats. Chen Feng was still at the same table as her, but the third chair on the other side remained empty.
Yi Jing glanced at the name card decorated with preserved flowers placed in front of that chair: Hubert Darren.
— The warden of the maximum security prison?
Chen Feng beside her seemed quite accustomed to Hubert’s tardiness. His mind suddenly turned to something, and he struck up a conversation with Yi Jing: “I didn’t see anyone from the Yi family come today, huh.”
“?” Yi Jing raised her eyes to look around the venue, not noticing any details, and replied disinterestedly, “I’m not sure.”
Was Chen Feng trying to probe her relationship with the Yi family? Unfortunately, she knew nothing. She didn’t follow the same path as the Yi family members, how would she know if they would come or not.
However, judging from the exchanges among those in front, it seemed that which candidate these financial groups in Jing’an City supported was also quite an important factor in the election process.
The most influential veteran tycoons in Jing’an City should be the Yi family, right.
Yi Jing turned her head and glanced lightly at Chen Feng.
What exactly did this person want to know? His name wasn’t among the candidates on stage, could he be planning to gauge the wind in advance?
Chen Feng felt a bit uncomfortable under her gaze. He cleared his throat and continued on his own: “Ah, this is also possible. After all, it’s quite common for some guests to be unable to attend these kinds of banquets.”
Yi Jing frowned imperceptibly upon hearing this.
Unable to attend a political banquet, apart from losing in party struggles and other interest exchanges, what other reasons could there be? If she were to acknowledge this, rumors might spread saying the information was leaked from her mouth.
This Chen Feng really was setting up traps with every sentence.
Yi Jing didn’t want to pay much attention to him. She glanced at the empty seat beside her again, then looked far ahead at the round table in the first row: “Aren’t there three candidates for the election? Why do I only see two here?”
“Oh, you mean Qilan?” Chen Feng saw that Yi Jing was unwilling to answer, but his expression didn’t show any abnormality. He still maintained that smooth-talking, amiable manner, “She’s someone sent by the higher-ups. Even though she’s participating in the election, she has other things to do. She doesn’t need to mingle with us.”
Other things to do.
Yi Jing thought for a moment, feeling that the internal party struggles within the judicial, political and legal, and public security systems were also quite intense.
It was just a mayoral transition, yet there were candidates from the judicial system, political and legal system, and a politician sent by the higher-ups, three factions. The voices within the judicial system were not unified, positions were inconsistent, and there was also a mysterious person who loved to play truant.
It really was quite complicated.
The banquet continued. This political banquet was even more boring than the Yi family’s dinner party. The politicians took turns going on stage to deliver a ‘stand-up comedy’ —
Even though there was no media broadcast, Yi Jing still felt they were trying their best to make everyone laugh, really overdoing the show.
However, Yi Jing couldn’t quite bring herself to laugh.
Not a single word from those scheming politicians on stage could be absolutely trusted. It was very likely that even the jokes casually thrown out hid party positions and private grudges settled with others. Yi Jing couldn’t help but frown deeply.
Finally, after Maxilla finished her speech, Yi Jing found an excuse to temporarily leave the banquet hall.
Toasting and exchanging pleasantries with nearby colleagues, plus paying attention to the subtleties in the words of those candidates and tycoons, made her extremely annoyed.
This work environment was even more complicated than the Yi family. Under such circumstances, it was understandable that the original body not only loved to put on a cold face, but might even become a neurotic.
Yi Jing leaned on the marble counter in the bathroom to catch her breath for a moment, then turned and walked back towards the banquet hall.
Being new and encountering this for the first time, it was better to try to gather as much information as possible.
“Yi Jing?”
Yi Jing was walking forward when suddenly a casual voice came from behind.
“?” Yi Jing was startled. She turned around to see a tall woman with a head of red wavy long hair slowly walking towards her.
Despite appearing in the banquet hall of Phantom City, she looked as if she hadn’t bothered to groom herself at all. Her red hair was slightly messy, and she wore a crisp uniform in a very casual manner, with the collar askew.
“Dealing with that Chen Feng fellow isn’t very pleasant, is it? New security officer of the 13th district.” The woman walked up to Yi Jing and seemingly casually looked her up and down, with an expression between a smile and not.
“You are…?” Yi Jing thought back to the colleagues in the files, and a candidate came to mind, but she wasn’t quite sure.
“Hubert Darren.” The red-haired woman extended her hand to shake with Yi Jing.
Yi Jing: “…”
She did have some impression of this colleague whose name would make one think it was a man, because the contrast was quite stark.
However, in the files provided by Auntie, this person’s ID photo was taken meticulously, and even had short hair, completely different from the radiant and somewhat lazy-looking person in front of her.
Now suddenly meeting face to face, Yi Jing really couldn’t be sure.
“How are you adapting to the new rhythm?” Hubert still had that not-so-caring look, with a faint hint of a smile on her face.
Yi Jing carefully recalled the warden’s information and felt that she shouldn’t have any intersection with the other party: “I don’t think we’re in a relationship to exchange such feelings.”
Hubert seemed to have heard something very funny. She lowered her head and chuckled twice, then said in a low voice:
“Alright.”
After saying this, she didn’t linger. She brushed past Yi Jing with her two cold-faced attendants.
However, as she passed by Yi Jing, Hubert raised her hand and lightly patted Yi Jing’s shoulder, smiling and saying in a low voice: “Because I find dealing with Chen Feng very annoying too.”
Yi Jing was stunned for a moment, catching a glimpse of Hubert and her attendants walking past her.
A faint scent of rose perfume slowly wafted from Yi Jing’s shoulder, gently curling around her nose.
Yi Jing was dazed for a moment, then frowned and turned her head, coldly patting her own shoulder.
For some reason, Yi Jing vaguely sensed a hint of kinship in Hubert’s words.
It was the taste of someone who similarly couldn’t stand this Phantom City.
Chen Feng probably really didn’t get along well with Hubert, or perhaps Hubert herself was an anomaly in Jing’an City. After Hubert took her seat, Chen Feng and the nearby politicians obviously quieted down a lot, no longer chatting with each other like before.
In contrast, Hubert seemed quite at ease, occasionally pulling the person next to her for a few words.
Yi Jing looked at Hubert, silently estimating how long this person must have been reckless in Jing’an City to have such an effect.
If she also…
Ah, forget it. The other party clearly had no scruples, but she was different. She still had things she had to do.
Quickly gathering her thoughts with a bit of regret, Yi Jing once again looked towards the stage at the front of the venue.
Thanks to Hubert’s presence, the second half of the banquet became less annoying. Yi Jing only needed to focus on figuring out the positions of those few candidates.
Finally, when the banquet officially ended, Yi Jing walked out of the venue, tired and weary, wanting nothing more than to immediately return to the Yi family and find an excuse to see that woman she had been longing for to recharge. At this moment, the driver proactively came over and brought a gift list.
“What’s this now?” Yi Jing looked at the gift list in her hand with surprise.
Driver: “Today was your first public appearance. These are gifts from your various colleagues. The corresponding items have been sent to the mansion, and Madam has already arranged the return gifts you need to give.”
Yi Jing: “…”
Yi Jing was silent for a moment, then lowered her hand speechlessly, feeling that this world was beyond saving.
