- Chapter 47 - Familiar Face – The Future
Han Qi’s favorability rating was rising quickly.
The system said that reaching 95% this time would count as success, and they were now only 7% short.
Compared to all the schemes she tried with Meng Tingmo, Han Qi was too easygoing. Yun Ruo thought for a moment—maybe this was the difference between love and indifference.
Meng Tingmo had been something she forced herself to pursue.
[He’s useful.] The system said. [Every time he acts up, it increases your relationship with Han Qi.]
“You’re right,” Yun Ruo admitted. The favorability was rising so fast, and Meng Tingmo had contributed to it in his own way. It could even be considered a small compensation for the harm he had caused her. “But having him constantly act up is annoying.”
She really wanted to draw a clear line with Meng Tingmo.
She needed to figure out a plan.
“Maybe my initial idea was wrong.”
[What idea?]
“Not telling Meng Tingmo the truth, for fear he’d chase me even harder.”
Knock knock—the door rattled.
“Yun Ruo? Dinner’s ready.”
“I’m coming.” Yun Ruo hurriedly responded. Today was a workday, and she had to go out and work like a horse. The colder the weather got, the harder it was to get out of bed.
After getting ready, she opened the door and came face-to-face with Han Qi’s handsome face, which leaned in to pinch her chin and plant a kiss. Yun Ruo was momentarily stunned.
“It’s nothing.” Han Qi fixed her hair. “Good morning.”
Yun Ruo: “This breakfast… is it eaten with this kiss?” One kiss?
Her thoughts jumped around, but it clearly pleased Han Qi. If it weren’t for the housekeeper downstairs urging them, she might have pulled him in for another.
They went downstairs for breakfast and left the house at eight sharp. Han Qi scrolled through the news from the back seat, while Yun Ruo stole a glance through the rearview mirror before quickly looking away.
Han Qi had originally planned to hire a driver to shuttle them both to and from work daily.
Yun Ruo refused. She could understand him needing a driver, but having one for her would defeat the purpose of moving in with Han Qi. Besides, transporting the boss around was explicitly part of her job duties from the start—Zhang Ji had done the same before.
“I kind of feel like I’m getting the best of both worlds,” Yun Ruo said to the system. Well, she thought, let’s just say she wanted a bit more private time with Han Qi.
[He’s really strange.]
[He hasn’t confirmed a relationship with you, yet he doesn’t seem like a scumbag.]
The favorability was undeniable.
Yun Ruo pursed her lips. Han Qi had only left the choice to her. In this “profitable” love pursuit, even if Han Qi demanded a formal relationship, it wouldn’t matter.
Lately, she had been busy, often working until eight or nine in the evening. While drinking coffee, she vented to Assistant Liu:
“Short dramas always have such idle CEOs. Every day, they either attend banquets or auctions or play the ‘you’ve been wronged, I’ll make it right’ game with the female lead. The assistant only needs to follow the male lead around and look impressive.”
“How come it’s like this in real life…”
Assistant Liu gave a bitter smile. “I want to be in a short drama as a special assistant!”
Another assistant walked by, looking exhausted. “What if I become the antagonist’s assistant? Will I get blacklisted by the main character?”
Assistant Liu: …
Yun Ruo couldn’t help but laugh, taking a two-minute break to prepare coffee for Han Qi. He was on the phone, but upon seeing her enter, he hung up.
“Inspection at the construction site at two this afternoon. Push back the meetings by about two hours.”
Yun Ruo nodded. As a life assistant, she also handled some administrative tasks.
In the whole company, she knew Han Qi’s movements best. Anyone asking about him essentially asked her schedule. Workers felt relieved whenever they heard the boss was away on business.
That afternoon, it drizzled lightly. Yun Ruo wore a helmet while walking on the construction site. The construction team explained little by little. They planned to build a leisure area, away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Yun Ruo felt it had potential but wouldn’t thrive too much.
She looked around. Someone turned a corner and seemed familiar. Before she could confirm, a worker slipped from a height—about two floors. Everyone rushed to check, scrambling to get him to the hospital. The return trip obviously took longer than expected.
Back at the office, Han Qi immediately went to the conference room. Before entering, he asked Yun Ruo to have a pack of ginger tea.
“Even instant remedies for colds are fine.”
Yun Ruo: ?
He was worried she’d catch a cold standing in the rain. Her memory of last time staying up all night must have stuck with him.
Yun Ruo simply served ginger tea to everyone who went to the construction site: “Han Qi cares, doesn’t want anyone catching a cold.”
The other assistants: …?
Han Qi didn’t expect Yun Ruo to also make a cup for him. At first glance, it looked like coffee, but upon tasting, it was spicy.
Yun Ruo hid in a corner, smiling. He looked at her with a trace of helplessness.
That evening, they worked until eight. The rain had stopped, but the chill deepened. Yun Ruo asked Han Qi if she could have the weekend off.
Han Qi: “Something planned?”
Yun Ruo: “To buy clothes.”
Han Qi looked puzzled.
At the red light ahead, Yun Ruo stopped the car. “When I woke up, it was summer, so I only bought summer clothes. Then autumn came, so I bought autumn clothes. Now winter’s coming, and I still don’t have winter clothes.”
She couldn’t just tough it out in winter. She had shopped online, but the clothes didn’t fit.
Hearing this, Han Qi felt a sting in his heart. The initial pain faded, leaving numbness that swept through him.
Yun Ruo had lain in a hospital bed for four years. When she finally woke up, she had nothing.
Everything was left with the Meng family. Her relationship with Yun Jia wasn’t as close as before. If it weren’t for He Xitong, Han Qi had no idea how she might have ended up.
“I remember I had to rent a place back then,” Yun Ruo recalled. “You saw it, right? I said it was for a friend.”
Han Qi made a noncommittal sound. He had sensed something was off back then and regretted not stopping Yun Ruo earlier.
“I had already found a place and told the agent we’d sign the next day. Who knew something would happen that night?” Yun Ruo said with a faint smile. In her heart, it was all in the past. “After waking up, I got my old phone. It still turned on, and the agent sent me tons of messages.”
“Sis, weren’t we supposed to sign the contract? Why did you disappear? [crying emoji]”
“Sis, did you have something to do this morning? We can reschedule. This place is really nice; if you don’t sign it fast, someone else will snatch it!”
“Sis, are you in trouble? I saw you looking for a house alone while heavily pregnant. Don’t worry, it’ll all be fine. Take care!”
“The world really does have more good people than bad.” Yun Ruo muttered unconsciously. She had just remembered this incident. “Anyway, I just need to buy some clothes. Even half a day is enough.”
“Sure.” Han Qi agreed quickly. As his life assistant, she had it harder than other assistants. Others had legal holidays; a life assistant had to match the boss’s schedule.
“I can come with you.”
Yun Ruo hesitated: “Hmm… if I say I’ve planned to meet Xitong…”
For a girls’ outing, Han Qi suddenly realized: “Then call me after you’re done. I’ll pick you up.”
“Hahaha, no need.” Yun Ruo laughed. Isn’t this something a boyfriend would do in a relationship? Even though they were already indistinguishable from a couple.
Han Qi didn’t insist. Yun Ruo didn’t call, so he would. He thought of something else: “Have you thought about what you want to do in the future?”
She couldn’t be a life assistant forever—her age mattered.
Han Qi had already thought ahead: “Maybe you can switch roles and move into management in the future.”
His company could provide Yun Ruo with enough opportunities.
She was momentarily speechless. Han Qi had already thought so far ahead, wanting to ensure she had a skill set, guiding her toward becoming high-caliber talent.
“Let’s talk about it later.” She replied, not wanting him to worry further.
In this world, Yun Ruo had no “future.”
She declined, and Han Qi didn’t press further.
Back home, Han Qi made her drink another cup of ginger tea. Yun Ruo grimaced but, seeing him leisurely enjoying it, she leaned in and kissed him proactively.
“Try some yourself.” The ginger tea was extremely strong, burning her throat like knives.
Han Qi didn’t care about the spiciness. She kissed him first, and even if she had eaten chili peppers, he would kiss her back.
After a long kiss, Yun Ruo finally said she had bought something for him, and he magnanimously let her go.
“Here.” Yun Ruo pushed a delivery box toward Han Qi. Inside was a box full of snacks.
Han Qi looked incredulous: “Snacks?”
Yun Ruo nodded firmly.
She already knew why Han Qi had grabbed her snacks last time. It wasn’t because he wanted them all—he just wanted to share with the office and realized he hadn’t gotten any. Buying a whole box made him happy.
Han Qi: …
Speechless, he couldn’t help laughing. Yun Ruo was so amusing—he wouldn’t have lasted five years if she were Meng Tingmo.
After tidying up, they each went to their rooms to rest. The next morning, Yun Ruo woke up to find Han Qi had sneezed twice in a row.
Not her, this time—it was Han Qi catching a cold?
Yun Ruo’s new job: supervising Han Qi to drink more hot water.
For mild colds, the best cure was simply “drink more hot water.”
Han Qi had been off coffee and tea for the past few days.
By Saturday, Han Qi drove himself to work, and Yun Ruo stayed in bed until eight.
Her day was packed: shopping in the morning, visiting Meng Feihan in the afternoon, and probably having dinner with Han Qi at night. Even her “day off” felt like working.
She met up with He Xitong around nine. They both had rare free time and first complained together, then went to shop for clothes.
“What happened? Went to the construction site inspection, then what?” He Xitong held a camel-colored coat up to Yun Ruo.
“I think I saw someone familiar,” Yun Ruo said, still thinking about the other day. She just hadn’t found the chance to mention it. “Not sure if it was her.”
He Xitong handed the coat for her to try on: “Who?”
“Welcome.” A voice at the entrance greeted them.
Jiang Yufei walked in with a bag. These past few years, she had been too busy to shop for clothes. Seeing the cold weather and realizing her wardrobe was insufficient, she came out to take a look.
The three of them ran into each other unexpectedly.
Yun Ruo didn’t blink and looked straight at Jiang Yufei. “It’s her.”
She answered He Xitong—yes, the familiar person she had seen that day was Jiang Yufei.
The scene felt déjà vu. When Jiang Yufei had returned to the country and decided to seek revenge, they had also “coincidentally” met in a store—a maternity shop. Jiang Yufei had said, “It must be hard to take care of a child alone.”
Now it seemed she hadn’t been wrong. Meng Feihan was living with one parent, and it wasn’t her.
