- Chapter 43 - This is My Mom and Dad – Sports Day
Friday morning at nine, Yun Ruo arrived on time at the kindergarten where Meng Feihan studied. The moment Meng Feihan saw her at the gate, his eyes lit up.
“Mom!”
He ran forward and hugged Yun Ruo’s thigh, then quickly noticed the familiar figure standing behind her.
“Uncle Han!”
He was very familiar with Han Qi. Although they didn’t meet often, several of his favorite model kits had been gifts from Han Qi. Each time Han Qi visited, he would patiently stay and help him finish building one before leaving.
At moments like this, Meng Feihan felt Han Qi gave off a sense of fatherly presence—though he was clear about reality.
Han Qi crouched down to greet him. Ever since Yun Ruo had come to his side, he and the boy hadn’t met for months.
“Would you like Uncle to join you for Sports Day today?”
Meng Feihan froze.
He was usually precocious—rarely did he look so dazed that Yun Ruo almost wanted to take a picture.
“Yes.” He quickly regained himself. What he wanted most was one complete parent-child Sports Day. Meng Tingmo never had time for such things. If it were only Yun Ruo, it still felt like something was missing. But if Han Qi came too—at least it would resemble a family of three.
As for Han Qi not being his father… who cared? All he wanted was for the people at kindergarten to see that he had parents.
Holding one hand in each of his, Meng Feihan led them inside. When Yun Ruo wasn’t looking, he shot a glare at the assistant waiting at the gate.
That was the minder Meng Tingmo had assigned—someone meant to stand in as his father at Sports Day.
Meng Feihan refused.
The assistant felt bitter under the boy’s glare. He finally understood who the little master had been waiting for—Yun Ruo and Han Qi. Did Mr. Meng know about this? Should he report it?
But officially, wasn’t his boss Meng Feihan?
Yun Ruo hadn’t expected Han Qi to propose joining them. She understood very well why Meng Feihan had called—children lacking parental presence always longed to be with their parents. Since Meng Tingmo couldn’t come, she couldn’t be blamed for finding someone else.
At the very least, she wanted Meng Feihan to have one full Sports Day memory.
The private kindergarten occupied a wide estate, with the sports meet held on the main field. Parents and children had already gathered. The principal gave a short opening speech.
Yun Ruo glanced around, spotting a few familiar faces. Some smiled politely at her; she returned the gesture.
“Acquaintances?” Han Qi asked in a low voice.
“Some of the society ladies from the circle,” Yun Ruo explained. “They run businesses, but they live relatively leisurely lives.”
“I have acquaintances too.”
“Oh?” She looked at him.
“Some assistants of big bosses,” Han Qi said.
Since they often met at negotiations, they naturally became familiar faces.
Yun Ruo understood. Clearly, other families thought the same way.
What was Sports Day compared to contracts worth tens or hundreds of millions? Most of them hadn’t grown up with parents attending either—so the “tradition” carried on.
No clear right or wrong: gaining wealth meant losing something else.
The games began. The three of them found their spot and looked over the events. There was a crab walk, an obstacle relay, and a “tail-snatching” game.
Yun Ruo silently rejoiced that Han Qi was here. The obstacle relay and tail-snatching both required strength—if she had to carry Meng Feihan against a group of burly men, the odds weren’t good.
Plenty of bodyguards had come today. One careless shove could send her flying.
“I’ll take Feihan for the crab walk. You handle tail-snatching,” she decided. That game had the father carrying the child while stealing others’ “tails” and defending their own. It could drag on half an hour or more. Yun Ruo didn’t have the stamina for that.
“We’ll do the obstacle course together,” Han Qi said.
“Mm-hm!” Meng Feihan raised his little fist.
He had a competitive streak—maybe inherited from Meng Tingmo—but whatever he did, he wanted to be the best.
When Han Qi didn’t immediately respond, Yun Ruo looked up in confusion, only to find him watching her with a faint smile.
His expression said it all.
Uncomfortable, she looked away. After being in this cheerful parent-child atmosphere, she almost felt like they really were a family.
The whistle blew. Yun Ruo and Meng Feihan set off sideways for the crab walk. She played with total seriousness.
She had never played these games as a child. For adults, they might seem silly, but to Meng Feihan they held special meaning. The moment he saw her at the gate, his spirits had soared. She wanted to win for him.
Han Qi stood by the track cheering them on and snapping photos. The kindergarten had arranged photographers, but of course, his own would be better. He even switched to burst mode.
“Hurry, Mom, they’re catching up!” Meng Feihan grew anxious watching the track ahead. Yun Ruo steadied him with a hand on his shoulder, while Han Qi shouted, “Hold steady!”
In a corner, the assistant was cracking under pressure.
Three beautiful people naturally drew attention—and with Meng Feihan already a central figure, he overheard whispers praising, “What a loving family.”
Family? Then what was Meng Tingmo—an afterthought?
The assistant quickly dialed his employer. If Mr. Meng didn’t show up soon, his family might get stolen.
Unaware of this, Yun Ruo and the others were celebrating their victory in the crab walk. She showered Meng Feihan with praise. He tried to keep a calm face, but when Han Qi joined in the compliments, he couldn’t help grinning.
All three were smiling.
Next came tail-snatching. Han Qi carried Meng Feihan effortlessly, and together they planned their moves calmly, almost like strategists.
Yun Ruo was momentarily dazed—she hadn’t expected them to get along so well. Han Qi’s logical, methodical way of doing things fit seamlessly with Meng Feihan’s temperament.
Perhaps, she thought, the boy might grow into someone like him.
She clicked the shutter just as the two reached out in unison to snatch another’s tail.
At Meng Corporation, Meng Tingmo had just finished a meeting. His phone had been on silent, and now he finally saw the assistant’s messages.
He nearly thought he was hallucinating. Calling back at once, he snapped,
“What do you mean Yun Ruo and Han Qi are acting as Feihan’s parents? His father is still alive!”
The assistant scratched his head. “Well… that’s just what the others think. They say no wonder the young master looks so good—it’s his genes.”
Meng Tingmo: …
“That’s not the point!”
“My point is—why is Han Qi even there?!”
He hadn’t known Meng Feihan had asked Yun Ruo to attend. To him, it was a weekday—they both had jobs, and their relationship was tense. Neither had time or energy for Sports Day. That was why the assistant was supposed to fill in.
But Yun Ruo had gone.
And brought Han Qi.
Storming out, Meng Tingmo overheard laughter from the pantry:
“…Haha, like in that drama—the reason the newcomer wins is because he fights and grabs what he wants!”
Meng Tingmo: …
Damn you, Han Qi. First my wife, now my son? Blind fool that I was to let you into my circle!
After hastily giving out instructions, he rushed to the kindergarten.
By then, the obstacle relay had begun. He arrived just in time to see Yun Ruo nearly slip on the balance beam, only to be caught steadily by Han Qi. The two stood close on the narrow bridge, Meng Feihan smiling radiantly between them as he clutched both their hands.
Meng Tingmo almost choked on his fury.
His assistant shrank into himself as the man growled, “Shouldn’t that be you standing up there?”
The assistant stammered, “I was supposed to—but the young master forbade me. He said someone else was coming to play with him.”
Before he could ask further, Yun Ruo and Han Qi had already arrived.
Meng Tingmo was left furious but helpless. The competition was halfway through; he couldn’t stop it. All he could do was watch.
The most humiliating moment of his life.
On the field, Meng Feihan cleared the obstacles first, followed by Yun Ruo and Han Qi. They were the first group to finish, earning applause all around.
Han Qi lifted Meng Feihan high in celebration. The boy was clearly delighted—grinning ear to ear.
This sort of play, Meng Tingmo thought, was childish. His son was too mature to enjoy such things.
In truth, father and son rarely exchanged praise. It wasn’t that Meng Tingmo was unwilling—it was just that, in families like theirs, achievement was expected. Doing what you “ought” to do didn’t warrant compliments.
“Feihan is amazing! You won every game today—you’re incredible!” the teachers gushed. “He’s usually so quiet, who knew he’d be so lively in motion?”
“Yes, yes! The grand prize is his!”
“Let’s take a photo!”
Meng Feihan unconsciously straightened his chest.
Yun Ruo almost laughed—until a boy suddenly rushed forward.
“Meng Feihan, you’re just an orphan with no mom!”
The air froze. Adults scrambled to smooth things over.
Meng Feihan’s smile faded. Yun Ruo turned toward the boy, recognizing his “parent” as a secretary of a listed company’s president. Rivalries in the adult world extended down to their children.
This boy had always picked fights with Meng Feihan—taunting him about not having a mother. That was why Feihan had begged Yun Ruo to come today.
“My mom is right here,” Meng Feihan said firmly, gripping Yun Ruo’s hand. After a pause, he grabbed Han Qi’s hand too. “And my dad is here.”
Yun Ruo & Han Qi: …?
“My mom and dad are both here.”
“Unlike you. I don’t see your parents. Maybe you’re the orphan.”
He had even searched online photos—those weren’t his parents.
The boy flushed red. He and Feihan had clashed from the start. Wasn’t Feihan supposed to be motherless? Why were both parents suddenly here?
Just as he tried to retort, someone yanked him up by the collar.
“Ah! Put me down, put me down!”
Meng Tingmo tossed the child aside.
He had been bottling up fury all day—first his enemy attended in his place, then his son called that man “dad.” And now, someone dared call his son a motherless orphan in public?
He couldn’t beat a child—but he could deal with that child’s parents.
Snatching Meng Feihan from Han Qi’s arms, Meng Tingmo left the boy startled. He hadn’t expected his father to appear. Han Qi gave him a calming hand gesture, which only made Meng Tingmo’s face darker.
Yun Ruo was already speaking with the staff. Clearly, this wasn’t the first time such things had been said, yet the school had never informed them.
And so, the Sports Day ended without the perfect finish they had hoped for.
