When the Heartthrob Meets the Cold-Hearted Ex - Chapter 35
Tang Yeran stayed at Su Yang’s home for three full days.
However, during these days, both of them had work, so they only crossed paths when leaving in the morning and returning at night. Apart from changing bandages and exchanging cat-care tips, there didn’t seem to be much more interaction between them.
On Friday afternoon, the entire digital entertainment department of Yi Feng was held back for a meeting. As per tradition, they likely wouldn’t be dismissed until around seven in the evening.
Worried that Su Yang might be waiting too long, Tang Yeran sent her a message.
At 7:15 p.m., the moment Tang Yeran stepped out of Yi Feng’s building, she spotted a familiar white Porsche parked in the middle of the square.
Puzzled, she approached, and as if sensing her presence, the car window rolled down.
“Su Yang, what are you doing here?”
The area was bustling with people, and Tang Yeran didn’t want to attract too much attention. She quickly opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat.
Su Yang glanced at her silently before picking up a plastic bag from the backseat to show her.
Tang Yeran had become all too familiar with this bag over the past few days, she couldn’t help but be impressed.
Even during Friday’s rush hour traffic, this woman would rather drive all the way here just to make Tang Yeran change her bandages than bother doing it herself.
But since it was something she had promised earlier, Tang Yeran naturally had to follow through.
She lifted Su Yang’s injured arm, deftly unwrapped the bandage, and smiled at the sight of the faint pink scar.
“Good thing you came in time, any later and the wound would’ve healed on its own.”
Su Yang took this as praise and nodded primly.
Though Tang Yeran teased, her hands moved smoothly through the cleaning and bandaging process.
In just a few days, she felt she had reached professional caregiver levels, all thanks to Su Yang, who couldn’t be bothered to lift a finger.
After securing the bandage with a neat bow, she clapped her hands together.
“The wound’s healing well. After today, you can just use a band-aid. I won’t have to crash at your place every night anymore.”
Su Yang pursed her lips, staring at her without blinking.
Tang Yeran packed away the cotton swabs and antiseptic, letting out a long sigh. “Three days went by so fast. Now that I’m leaving, I actually feel a little reluctant.”
Su Yang’s eyes sparkled at this, eagerly waiting for her to continue.
“Hey, how about you let me take Yuanbao for a couple of days? I’ve got plenty of time this weekend.” Tang Yeran grinned as if she’d just thought of a brilliant idea.
Su Yang’s face darkened instantly. “No.”
Tang Yeran hadn’t expected such a firm rejection and grumbled in dissatisfaction.
“Don’t be so stingy. Yuanbao’s grown up now, and she’s close to me. A change of scenery every now and then wouldn’t hurt.”
“Besides, I’ve been taking care of you for three whole days. Even if I didn’t do much, I still put in the effort.”
She was about to continue her complaints when Su Yang cut her off.
“If you take Yuanbao away, I won’t be able to sleep alone at home.”
Tang Yeran: ?
Then how did you survive the past twenty-something years?
But when she caught the fleeting loneliness in Su Yang’s expression, her heart softened a little.
As the saying goes, it’s easy to go from frugality to extravagance but hard to go back.
Tang Yeran thought: If Yuanbao had been with me all this time and was suddenly taken away, I probably wouldn’t be able to sleep either.
“Fine, fine. Seeing how pitiful you are, I won’t fight you for her. But after I leave, I’m still posting about her on social media.”
Su Yang kept a cold expression for a long while before finally letting out a soft “Mmm.”
Tang Yeran was about to say something more when her phone suddenly rang.
Seeing the caller ID display “Mom,” she answered the call.
“Sweetheart, you’re off work now, right? Have you eaten yet?” The distinct southern accent of a woman came through the electronic device.
Tang Yeran glanced at the clock showing 7:25 and told a little white lie. “Just ate, Mom. What’s up?”
“I just wanted to let you know your cousin Qianqian is getting married soon. The wedding is set for May 2nd. You’ll come back for it, right?”
May 2nd was still a little over two weeks away.
Tang Yeran’s maternal relatives were few, and among her cousins of the same generation, Fang Qian was the only one close in age. Naturally…
“I’ll come back on May 1st. She already told me about this before.”
After finishing the main topic, Tang’s mother launched into her usual nagging mode.
“You and your cousin were closest when you were little. Qianqian is only two years older than you, and now she’s getting married, while you don’t even have a partner yet.”
Here it comes. Once this topic started, it usually lasted at least half an hour.
Tang Yeran glanced at Su Yang beside her, signaling with her eyes for the other to start driving.
But Su Yang seemed completely oblivious to her hint. Not only did she take both hands off the steering wheel, but she also deliberately scooted closer, listening to the conversation with keen interest.
Tang Yeran: “…”
The old lady on the phone continued rambling, “You’re almost twenty-five now. All these years, you’ve been alone. Mom is really worried about you.
“Mom isn’t that old-fashioned. You said before you don’t like boys well, girls are fine too. But you have to bring someone home eventually.
“Mom’s getting old. I can’t be with you forever. Just thinking about my daughter being all alone in this world after I’m gone, I wouldn’t be able to rest in peace…”
This was getting more and more absurd. Tang Yeran couldn’t help but interrupt, “Mom, Mom, Mom! You’re still young. You’ve got decades ahead of you. Stop worrying about me. You’d be better off playing mahjong or dancing in the square.”
“Don’t change the subject!” The old lady was stubborn once she started, she had to finish.
“Mom’s standards aren’t high. As long as they’re alive and treat you well, that’s enough.
“Someone like Yangyang back then would’ve been perfect. But you just had to break up with her. Now you see how hard it is to find someone, don’t you.”
Tang Yeran had already tried to lower the phone’s volume, but the darn thing leaked sound terribly.
Su Yang sat in the driver’s seat, dressed in a perfectly tailored brand-new women’s suit, her wrist adorned with a sapphire bracelet, a limited-edition Shining Candy collectible that accentuated her stylish and elegant aura.
When she heard “Yangyang,” she deliberately straightened her posture even more. The sight of a beauty in a luxury car was quite pleasing to the eye.
Tang Yeran stole a glance and couldn’t help but grumble inwardly: Someone like Su Yang? Mom, your standards are way too high.
But she would never say that out loud, especially not in front of the person in question otherwise, that woman would be insufferably smug.
When the old lady was talking, interrupting was bad, but not responding was just as bad. Like now.
“Sweetheart, are you still there? Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t think Mom’s nagging you, it’s all for your own good.”
Tang Yeran’s face was full of resignation, but with someone else present, she couldn’t exactly lose her temper.
On the other hand, Su Yang was happily spinning a mineral water bottle with one hand.
With a thud, the bottle fell to the floor.
The enclosed space of the car amplified sounds, making even the slightest noise clearly audible over the phone.
“What was that sound? Nannan, is someone with you right now?”
Faced with her mother’s suspicion, Tang Yeran was quickly fabricating an excuse when Su Yang suddenly spoke up.
“Auntie, it’s me, Su Yang.”
The moment Tang’s mother heard Su Yang’s voice, her tone instantly brightened. “Yangyang! It really is Yangyang! Nannan, quickly pass the phone to Yangyang, I want to talk to her for a bit.”
Tang Yeran’s ears were practically calloused from her mother’s nagging. She shot a glare at the troublemaker beside her and temporarily tossed the “bomb” away.
With her eyes, she signaled Su Yang to behave. The other girl gave her a slight nod, reassuring her.
“Auntie, it’s so good to hear from you. I’ve missed you too.”
Tang Yeran: “…”
“I returned to the country this year and am currently staying with Ranran. I was actually planning to visit you when I have time.”
Tang Yeran: “?”
“Labor Day? Of course I’m free, I’ll be on holiday then. I’ll definitely come.”
Tang Yeran: “!”
Tang Yeran’s eyelids were practically twitching from how hard she was glaring. Not only did Su Yang show no restraint, but she was also escalating the absurdity!
Unable to tolerate it any longer, she lunged for the phone. But with Su Yang’s martial arts skills, she stood no chance.
Su Yang effortlessly dodged her attacks while maintaining a sweet, obedient tone with the older woman it was enough to make one question if she had multiple personalities!
While Su Yang and Tang’s mother chatted merrily, Tang Yeran was practically fuming like a pufferfish.
Not daring to push things too far, Su Yang quickly said, “Auntie, Ranran has something else she wants to tell you.”
Then, just before Tang Yeran exploded, she promptly returned the phone to its rightful owner.
Tang Yeran snatched the phone back. At this point, she didn’t even want to speak, she just wanted to hang up!
Fortunately, her mother didn’t give her a chance to say anything either.
“Nannan, so you’re still with Yangyang after all! You should’ve said so earlier, I wouldn’t have nagged you about it then.”
“It’s fine, take your time with the relationship. I’m a very open-minded parent, I won’t interfere with my child’s love life.”
“But you’d better cherish it this time! No breaking up on a whim again. Yangyang is such a good girl you don’t have another five years to waste being single!”
“Alright, alright, I won’t keep you. Auntie Chen is calling me to join her square dancing. Remember to bring Yangyang home for Labor Day!”
Finally, it was over. Tang Yeran didn’t even have the energy to explain anymore.
It was clear now, Su Yang was here specifically to sabotage her.
There was no way she’d actually bring Su Yang home for Labor Day. At most, she’d just say Su Yang had to work overtime last minute.
Wait wouldn’t that still imply she and Su Yang were together? How annoying!
Too furious to hold back, she grabbed the culprit’s arm and bit down hard. “Who told you to spout nonsense to my mom?!”
Su Yang winced in pain but obediently left her arm within biting range, blinking innocently. “Everything I said was true, though?”
“True?” Tang Yeran threw a pack of tissues at Su Yang. “You ‘missed’ my mom?”
“Of course! Her fried crispy pork is amazing.” Su Yang nodded nostalgically.
“And we ‘live together’?”
“As of this moment, yes though you’re about to move out soon.”
“You’re so sure I’ll show up on May Day, did I agree to that?”
“I have the freedom to choose my own travel destination for the May Day holiday. I never said you’d be the one taking me there.”
Tang Yeran: …
Damn!
