- Chapter 7 - Sisters Depending on Each Other
Shi Yining felt a wave of frustration. Was she truly destined to never escape the entanglement of this malevolent ghost?
She attempted to channel her spiritual power, but as expected, she could not break free from the restraint.
“Jiang Liuyue, let go of me first. My Junior Sister will be here soon; it won’t look good if we are seen like this.”
“Why would it not look good?”
“Jiang Liuyue, you are asking the obvious!”
“Is Miss Shi angry…?”
Seeing that the ghost had no intention of loosening her grip, Shi Yining simply threw caution to the wind. “Yes, I am angry! I don’t want to see you; I want to stay far away from you!”
“But… I cannot leave Miss Shi. Even if you loathe me, even if you abandon me, I still want to remain by your side…”
Shi Yining wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she detected a hint of grievance in those words.
Clearly, it was this ghost who was forcing her presence upon her against her will, yet now the ghost acted as if she were the victim of Shi Yining’s rejection. In this moment, the ghost reminded her poignantly of her own past self…
Shi Yining’s heart softened slightly. She hesitated, “Jiang Liuyue, you…”
She stopped mid-sentence as the half-closed door was pushed open.
Yu Chang entered the room slowly, carrying a bowl of clear water. “Senior Sister, which elixir would be best to dissolve in the water?”
The restraints surrounding Shi Yining vanished instantly. She quickly regained her composure and replied calmly, “Her vitality is fading severely, and her blood energy is almost non-existent. A Blood-Replenishing Pill is best.”
Yu Chang’s eyes crinkled into a smile. “I happen to have many Blood-Replenishing Pills in my storage bag, so we won’t need to go out and buy any.”
With a wave of her sleeve, a translucent jade bottle appeared before her.
“Senior Sister, how many pills should I use?”
“One is enough. Her body is too weak right now. If the medicinal strength is too potent, it won’t save her—it might even kill her.”
Yu Chang hummed an assent and quickly took out a crimson pill. She crushed it into a fine powder, mixed it into the warm water, and walked to the bedside to gently lift the skeletal young girl.
“Sigh… Senior Sister, I can’t get her to drink the water. What should I do?”
“Let me try.”
Shi Yining took the porcelain bowl and tilted the girl’s head up slightly. She gently pinched open the girl’s jaw and, using her spiritual power to assist, fed her the liquid bit by bit.
Yu Chang held her breath as she watched. After a few moments, a look of joy appeared on her face.
“She swallowed it!”
Hidden in the shadows, Jiang Liuyue watched Shi Yining’s every gentle movement, and a seed of jealousy toward the young girl began to grow in her heart.
If only Miss Shi would treat me with such tenderness…
In truth, she had lied. She did not know everything about Miss Shi’s past life.
Whenever the Moon-Bright Sect was involved, her memories became blurred… She knew Miss Shi had been deeply in love with someone in her previous life, but she didn’t know who that person was. Whenever Miss Shi was kind to others, she couldn’t help but let her mind wander into dark places…
By the wooden bed, Yu Chang seemed to sense something and instinctively shrugged her shoulders. “Senior Sister, don’t you think this room has suddenly become much colder?”
Shi Yining lied with a straight face: “Not at all. It’s just your imagination, Junior Sister.”
“Really?”
“Really. Don’t overthink it.”
Shi Yining secretly glared at the spot where the ghost was hiding. In the next instant, the scattered Yin energy retracted significantly.
Yu Chang let out a small “Huh?” of surprise. “It seems it’s not cold anymore…”
She scratched her head, looking puzzled. “Was it really my imagination?”
Just as Shi Yining was about to speak to further distract her Junior Sister, a very faint moan reached her ears.
Yu Chang immediately looked toward the bed. “Senior Sister, she’s about to wake up.”
Shi Yining looked over as well but slowly shook her head after a moment. “She isn’t simply unconscious. Even after taking the Blood-Replenishing water, she won’t be able to fully wake up.”
Unless… the Heart Realm completely dissipated.
To resolve this situation, the key lay with the girl’s elder sister, An Lan. Shi Yining already had a plan in mind; as long as An Lan was willing to cooperate, An Mu would wake up tomorrow.
Midnight was approaching. Shi Yining sat at the mahogany table, her slender fingers rhythmically tapping the surface. Yu Chang, meanwhile, was pacing back and forth in the room.
“Senior Sister, do you think that person will still come?”
Shi Yining had been using her divine sense to monitor the outside world. At that moment, she suddenly sensed something and a smile touched her lips.
“She is already here.”
“Is that true? But I didn’t sense anything… Wait, no? She really is here! Why is she so silent, like a ghos—” Yu Chang seemed to realize her words were inappropriate and immediately clapped a hand over her mouth.
In the next instant, the door was pushed open without warning.
A figure completely shrouded in a pitch-black cloak appeared before them.
“Who are you? What is your purpose here?”
A voice as cold as ice reached their ears; the figure looked ready to strike at any moment.
Looking at the newcomer, Shi Yining explained with a smile, “My Junior Sister and I are from the Xuanqing Sect. By order of our Sect Leader, we are here to investigate the strange occurrences in Xichi Town over the past few days.”
“This has nothing to do with my sister. If you have any grievances, bring them to me!”
Hearing this, Yu Chang raised her brows. “So the little girl is your sister. You haven’t done a very good job as an elder sister. Do you know she’s skeletal and her life force is nearly severed? You look like a cultivator yourself; it shouldn’t be hard for you to save her. Why have you ignored her?”
Shi Yining reached out and tugged at her Junior Sister’s sleeve, signaling her to stop with a look, before quickly speaking to mend the situation. “Apologies, my Junior Sister is blunt and outspoken. We mean no harm; we are here to help you.”
An Lan did not respond. She strode quickly to the bedside, using her soul power to sense her sister’s condition.
After about a hundred breaths of time, she turned around, her eyes hidden beneath the cloak staring directly at Shi Yining.
“Mu’er’s vitality has recovered slightly. Did you feed her an elixir?”
“Correct. However, doing so will not wake her. She is currently trapped within a ‘Heart Realm.’ To wake her, the realm must be broken.”
“What is a Heart Realm?”
“It is the phenomena you have seen these past few days. Think of it as a dream that has manifested into reality. If I am not mistaken, do you use your magic to enter your sister’s dreams every night?”
After a moment of silence, An Lan looked at Shi Yining with deep suspicion.
“How do you know that?”
“Don’t worry about how I know. I only have one question for you: do you want to save your sister?”
“Of course I do… Are you saying you will help me?”
Shi Yining gave a gentle smile. “As I said, my Junior Sister and I came to investigate Xichi Town. We will only return once the matter is resolved.”
An Lan’s suspicion did not fade. “How do you two plan to solve it?”
Shi Yining continued, “There is more than one way to break a Heart Realm. However, to do so without harming the owner of the realm, there is only one method: you must find a way to let the owner re-absorb the power of the Heart Realm. Once the realm vanishes, she will naturally wake up. You and your sister depend on each other; without a doubt, you are the most important person to her. If your figure no longer appears within the Heart Realm, her consciousness will slowly awaken over time and break free.”
An Lan was half-believing and half-doubting. “Is that the truth?”
“Naturally. We have no reason to deceive you—especially since I have already seen through your true identity.”
There was a profound meaning in that last sentence.
Yu Chang was thoroughly confused and was about to ask for clarification when she heard her Senior Sister drop a bombshell.
“You have long since passed away; you are currently a ghost. The reason your sister has become like this is because of her obsession—she wants to resurrect you. The existence of the Heart Realm helped her fulfill this wish. As long as you continue to appear, she will be forever lost in that dream and will never wake up.”
After a long silence, An Lan believed Shi Yining’s words. She took action, ceasing to appear in the Heart Realm while silently remaining by her unconscious sister’s side.
That night, the girl on the wooden bed was trapped in a nightmare. Tears fell occasionally from the corners of her eyes, wetting her disheveled black hair.
The night was long. To wait for the result, Shi Yining did not leave. She rested her chin on her hand and took a brief nap.
Junior Sister Yu Chang held out for a long time, but her eyelids grew heavier and heavier until she eventually slumped onto the table, sleeping soundly.
Jiang Liuyue remained hidden in the shadows, silently accompanying her beloved.
The next morning, as the light of dawn grew, the girl on the bed slowly opened her bright eyes under An Lan’s joyful gaze.
At that same moment, the strange phenomena that had blanketed Xichi Town for days dissipated without a trace.
Shi Yining had successfully completed the mission, but one hidden danger remained.
In her previous life, An Lan had been refined into a Myriad Soul Banner by an evil cultivator. Although An Mu was now awake, that evil cultivator had not been eliminated.
According to the timeline of her past life, in three days, that evil cultivator would appear in an underground black market three hundred miles northwest of Kaiyuan City.
The evil cultivator was at the early stage of the Golden Core realm, while Shi Yining was at the late stage. If they fought, she was confident she could eliminate him.
At this moment, the newly awakened An Mu was leaning into her sister’s arms, sobbing softly.
Not wishing to disturb them, Shi Yining used a voice transmission to signal her Junior Sister—who had long since woken up—to leave the house with her.
“The mission is complete. Junior Sister, you can return to the sect first.”
Yu Chang was very surprised. “Does the girl waking up mean the strange things in Xichi Town will truly disappear for good?”
“You could say that.”
“Senior Sister, are you asking me to go back first because you have something else to handle?”
Shi Yining did not hide the truth. “Indeed, there is one matter. I am going to eliminate an evil cultivator.”
Yu Chang clenched her fists. “Senior Sister, I want to go too!”
Seeing no response, she gently grabbed the woman’s sleeve and pleaded softly, “Just let me go with you, please?”
As soon as she finished speaking, a sudden gust of Yin wind rose around them.
A bone-chilling cold rushed toward her, and Yu Chang shivered from the frost.
“Wha… What is happening? Why did it suddenly get so cold?”
