- Chapter 35 - The Confession
Yu Chang frowned and turned around, looking toward the tall, elegant figure standing at the doorway.
“This is a matter between my Senior Sister and me. Senior Sister has not yet responded; what standing does Fellow Daoist Mo have to interfere?”
“Junior Sister,” Shi Yining raised her voice to stop her, her tone carrying a hint of reproach. “You must not be rude to Fellow Daoist Mo.”
“Senior Sister…” Yu Chang stamped her foot, a sense of indignation rising in her heart. “If it weren’t for Shu Mo, you wouldn’t have taken the Heart-Forgetting Pill, nor would you have encountered problems with your cultivation. She has caused you such misery, yet you still want to defend her?”
Shi Yining fell into a momentary silence.
Regarding the Heart-Forgetting Pill… she currently had only blurred memories and did not know the exact truth. However, she could vaguely sense that the pill had not been forced upon her by Shu Mo.
“Junior Sister, I have a general understanding of this matter. It was not Fellow Daoist Mo’s doing; she did not harm me. Do not speak of this again.”
Seeing her Senior Sister instinctively protect that person, Yu Chang felt a sharp, stabbing pain in her chest. Her almond-shaped eyes gradually filled with tears, turning slightly red.
Looking at her in such a state, Shi Yining felt a pang of pity, but at the thought of Yu Chang’s previous proposal, she immediately hardened her heart.
“Junior Sister, the method you mentioned just now… is only applicable between Dao companions. In this life, we can only ever be sisters of the same sect; we will not become Dao companions. I understand your feelings, but… I do not harbor any romantic love for you…”
These words caused the icy chill between the brows of the tall figure standing in the distance to dissipate significantly.
The atmosphere in the room gradually grew stagnant.
At that moment, Shu Mo walked over slowly and sat down by the bedside. She picked up the medicine spoon and gently stirred the light brown medicinal broth in the bowl.
“Ning’er, this is a spiritual medicine I just brewed; it can assist in recovering your memory.” She scooped up a spoonful, blew on it carefully, and slowly brought it to her beloved’s lips.
Shi Yining obediently opened her mouth, her gaze unconsciously falling upon Shu Mo’s focused profile.
They were very close—close enough to see the tiny, almost transparent peach fuzz on her jade-like skin, and to feel their warm breaths slowly intertwining…
The medicine was slightly bitter as it entered her mouth, spreading quickly across her tongue.
Shi Yining instinctively frowned. However, looking at the boundless tenderness of the person before her, a hidden trace of sweetness bubbled up in her heart, slowly masking the bitterness in her mouth.
Standing to the side, Yu Chang watched as the tips of her Senior Sister’s ears gradually flushed crimson. Seeing the natural tenderness Shu Mo displayed while feeding the medicine, she found the scene exceptionally piercing to the eyes.
Unable to watch any longer, she turned and left. Her silhouette, reflected in the setting sun, appeared particularly lonely…
As the bowl of medicine slowly reached the bottom, Shu Mo waved her sleeve, and a bag of candied fruit instantly materialized in the air. She then lifted a slender finger, picked up one of the fruits, and slowly offered it to her beloved’s lips.
Just like before, Shi Yining instinctively opened her mouth. As she took the candied fruit, she accidentally brushed against the warm fingertip.
Both of them froze.
Shi Yining leaned back slightly, hurriedly lowering her eyes as the flush on her ears deepened.
Shu Mo’s finger remained suspended in mid-air. Upon closer inspection, a trace of transparent moisture could be seen on the tip.
That fleeting, soft sensation caused her heart to tremble.
She instinctively rubbed her fingertip. Watching her beloved’s flustered and helpless state, Shu Mo quietly withdrew her hand and asked softly, “Is it still bitter?”
The voice falling upon her ears contained no hint of teasing or playfulness, only manifest tender concern. Shi Yining slowly shook her head, gradually calming her mind. The sweetness of the candied fruit dissolved between her teeth, followed by a surge of warmth in her heart.
After a few moments, she looked up at Shu Mo and collided with a gaze as deep as the sea.
After a moment of daze, she turned her face away uncomfortably. “Why are you looking at me like that…”
Shu Mo did not respond. Instead, she reached out to wipe away a small remnant of medicine from the corner of her lips.
Her thumb brushed gently over the lip, carrying an almost imperceptible lingering touch.
This overly intimate gesture made Shi Yining hold her breath.
“Is it sweet?” Shu Mo asked softly, her gaze still fixed on her lips.
Shi Yining nodded blankly.
“Let me taste it too…”
Before the words had finished, Shu Mo leaned in close.
Their noses touched lightly, and their breaths slowly became one. In that moment, Shi Yining clearly saw her own reflection in the other’s eyes and felt the long-restrained longing.
The instant their lips met, a tightly wound string in Shi Yining’s mind snapped.
Simultaneously, the thick fog deep within her memory seemed to be gently brushed aside by a tender yet firm hand. The forgotten past came rushing back like a tide; the long-sealed memories were finally restored at this moment…
Two lines of clear tears silently slid down her cheeks.
Sensing that her beloved’s emotions were off, Shu Mo immediately stopped the kiss before it could deepen.
She, who was always composed and calm in the eyes of others, felt a rare trace of panic rise in her heart.
“Ning’er, don’t cry… If you are unwilling, I won’t touch you again.” Her voice carried a cautious nervousness.
Deeply affected by her memories, Shi Yining reached out to gently caress the face so close to her own. Her fingertips traced the familiar contours inch by inch, as if to confirm that this was not a dream.
“Fellow Daoist Mo…” Her voice was still choked with sobs, but a glimmer of a smile rippled in her eyes. “I remember…”
Shu Mo looked at the radiance reigniting in Shi Yining’s eyes—it was no longer mixed with confusion or that subtle sense of distance.
“What do you remember?” Her voice trembled slightly, carrying an air of disbelief and hope.
Shi Yining’s fingertips lightly traced the curve of the other’s brow. “I remember that late night, your confession to me… I remember the days we shared adversity within the cage… I remember everything leading up to and following the consumption of the Heart-Forgetting Pill… Everything, I remember it all…”
Including… the experiences of her past life…
Recalling those past traumas, Shi Yining’s chest suddenly tightened. Her fingertips curled slightly, and just as she was about to withdraw her hand, it was firmly caught in the next instant by the person before her and pressed back against that jade-like face.
“Ning’er… do not distance yourself from me again…”
Shu Mo pulled her into a tight embrace, holding her with the cherished care of someone recovering a lost treasure.
Shi Yining did not struggle; she leaned her face gently against Shu Mo’s shoulder. “Fellow Daoist Mo, you…”
Shu Mo’s fingers ran through her cascading black hair. “The term ‘Fellow Daoist’ is too distant for us. If Ning’er is willing, could you call me Mo’er?”
After a moment of silence, Shi Yining spoke again. “Mo’er…”
Shu Mo answered with a doting hum, her eyes filled with joy. She tightened her embrace gradually, as if trying to fold all the longing and waiting of these past days into this single hug.
“Now that Mo’er is staying with me, what about Sect Leader Shu…”
“Mother will no longer interfere in our affairs… Ning’er, I am sorry. It was my negligence that day; I failed to arrive in time and allowed you to suffer so much.”
Shi Yining shook her head slowly, her fingers stroking Shu Mo’s trembling back. “It was not Mo’er’s fault; you need not apologize.” She paused, her voice turning softer. “It was Sect Leader Shu who told me that if I did not take the Heart-Forgetting Pill, she would make Mo’er take it…”
“Actually… Mother lied to you. I practice the Moonlight Heart Sutra; the Heart-Forgetting Pill is completely ineffective on me. I had taken that pill long ago…”
“What?”
Hearing this, Shi Yining’s mind drifted for a moment in a daze.
A voice laced with guilt continued to reach her ears. “Not just the Heart-Forgetting Pill—a long time ago, Mother once used a Heart-Forgetting Gu (parasite) to make me sever all emotions and renounce love. That method… succeeded for a period of time…”
Shu Mo held the woman in her arms tightly, fearing she might distance herself again because of this…
She had countless inner thoughts she wanted to pour out, from their past lives to this one… she had so much she wanted to tell Ning’er. She wanted to say that there had been many misunderstandings between them…
After a brief silence, Shi Yining suppressed the various thoughts rising in her heart and asked in a low voice, “The Gu Mo’er mentioned—specifically, when was that?”
She was curious… calculating carefully, she and Shu Mo had known each other for less than half a year in this life. Yet, hearing her mention the Heart-Forgetting Gu, it sounded as though it happened in the distant past…
Before she could think further, an extremely soft reply reached her ear.
“In our previous life, where we had destiny but no fruition…”
At that moment, Shi Yining felt as if she had been struck by lightning; her mind went completely blank.
She was actually like her—a rebirth…
Of course… she should have realized it sooner. Shu Mo had personally admitted she was Jiang Liuyue… that malevolent ghost had made it clear from the very beginning when she first haunted her that she knew of her past life… it was only that Shi Yining’s subconscious had been unwilling to acknowledge this fact…
The moment she regained her senses, Shi Yining instinctively tried to break free from the embrace and flee from the person before her.
Sensing this, Shu Mo leaned forward and locked her firmly in her arms.
All the unbearable memories of their past life surfaced one by one in her mind. Shi Yining did not know how to face them; her only thought was to escape, and she blurted out an excuse.
“Junior Sister has been gone for a long time; I want to go check on her…”
Before the words had fully left her lips, she felt the world spin. She was heavily pressed down onto the soft couch.
Shu Mo leaned down close, her black hair falling onto Shi Yining’s slender neck.
“Knowing full well that Fellow Daoist Yu harbors specialized feelings for you, Ning’er still wants to take the initiative to be near her?”
There was unmistakable jealousy in her voice.
Shi Yining gazed blankly at the person pinning her down.
Those eyes, which had been full of tenderness just moments ago, were now revealing a frightening sense of paranoia… This was exactly the expression Jiang Liuyue often wore.
“Mo’er, you…” Shi Yining’s eyes widened in surprise, her unfinished words immediately cut off by a sudden kiss.
In the moment their soft lips met, her teeth were pried open by an irresistible force. A silken tongue slowly explored within, demanding and taking wantonly…
“Mmph… Mo’er… Jiang Liuyue, let… let me go…”
She was answered by an even deeper lingering passion. Well-defined, jade-like fingers began to touch her skin inch by inch, caressing with a feather-light touch…
“Don’t go looking for her…”
A murmured whisper reached her ear, the words filled with absolute stubbornness. Upon closer listening, they also contained a few hints of fragility.
“Ning’er is only allowed to have me by her side…”
