- Chapter 27 - Possessiveness
The heavy sensation of suffocation quietly receded.
Silver pearl-like bubbles escaped one after another from where their lips met. Shi Yining’s long eyelashes trembled slightly as she slowly opened her eyes.
Within her line of sight, ink-black hair spread out wantonly in the water, drifting with the ripples like a waterfall. The face inches away from hers was pristine and untainted, like an immortal fairy who had accidentally fallen from the highest heavens into the mortal realm.
As her spiritual power gradually restored, Shi Yining wrapped her arm around Shu Mo’s slender waist and led her to fly rapidly toward the surface.
After a loud splash, the two women emerged from the water, still embracing.
Gazing at the all-too-familiar scenery as she looked around, Shi Yining froze in realization.
“How can this be? This is… the back mountain of Xigui Peak?”
Had they actually flown out from the hot spring just now?
Shu Mo was equally surprised. “In that case, have we not arrived at the Xuanqing Sect?”
Shi Yining’s gaze grew heavy. “I never imagined the Extreme Cold Ice Field could lead directly to the Xuanqing Sect. Master never mentioned this. The two places are tens of thousands of miles apart, and the Ice Field belongs to the territory of demonic cultivators… Fellow Daoist Mo, do you think… could we have fallen into an illusion?”
Shu Mo mused, “We cannot rule out that possibility. If it is an illusion, there must be a flaw. Fellow Daoist Shi, you might want to look closely at whether everything in the sect is identical to your memory.”
Shi Yining intended to do exactly that.
Before she could speak, a voice filled with pleasant surprise suddenly called out from the distance.
“Senior Sister!”
Shi Yining looked toward the sound. In the next instant, a pretty figure came sprinting over and threw herself into Shi Yining’s arms without a word.
“Senior Sister, you’re finally back… We searched for you for so long and couldn’t find you anywhere… I thought I would never see you again.”
Because of her prior suspicions, Shi Yining harbored a hint of wariness in her heart. She tested the waters by calling out a name, “Yu Chang?”
The young girl holding her nodded repeatedly. “It’s me, Senior Sister.”
“You said just now… that you looked for me for a long time. I wonder how many days have passed since the incident at the Ninefold Abyss?”
At the mention of this, Yu Chang’s eyes instantly reddened. “A full six days… By the time the rescue arrived, you and Fellow Daoist Mo had just been swallowed by the vortex. The sect leaders and elders of the three sects used every method possible, but they couldn’t find a single trace of you…”
Hearing this, Shi Yining felt a momentary daze. In her memory, they had clearly not stayed in that realm for very long, yet six days had already passed.
If this wasn’t an illusion and what her Junior Sister said was true, it proved that the other realm likely had a different flow of time.
Just as her thoughts were racing, her slender wrist was suddenly grabbed.
The grip was sudden and heavy, yet she could faintly sense a subtle trembling within it.
Shi Yining turned around in shock. She saw Shu Mo’s lips pressed into a tight line, her already pale face now appearing as if covered in a layer of frost.
Although her eyes could not see, she could use her divine sense to roughly “see” everything around them.
“Even if you are members of the same sect, you shouldn’t be this intimate with each other.”
Shi Yining was stunned at first, but then she realized what was happening. She tried to push Yu Chang away, but the girl was clinging to her tightly, like an octopus.
Sensing her Senior Sister’s rejection, Yu Chang’s almond-shaped eyes filled with grievance as she looked piteously at the heavenly beauty.
“Senior Sister…”
“Junior Sister, stop fooling around. Get down quickly.”
“I don’t want to~ I finally saw you, I want to hold you a bit longer~”
“If you keep acting like this, I’m going to get angry!”
There was a hint of severity in her words. The young girl’s body stiffened slightly upon hearing it, but she still didn’t let go.
The restraint on Shi Yining’s wrist suddenly loosened. In the next moment, a long-fingered, elegant hand forced its way between the two of them. Every movement carried an undeniable sense of possessiveness.
Yu Chang was forced out of her Senior Sister’s embrace. Her face was full of resentment as she stared at the culprit, finding her more unpleasant the more she looked at her.
“I thank Fellow Daoist Mo for saving my Senior Sister that day. However, although we owe you a debt of gratitude, you are overstepping your bounds. Who my Senior Sister is close with is none of your business, is it?”
Upon hearing this, Shi Yining’s voice immediately rose. “Junior Sister, do not be rude! Apologize to Fellow Daoist Mo at once!”
“Senior Sister!” Yu Chang stomped her foot in anger. “Did I say something wrong? You have no relation to her. Just because she saved you, can she be this tyrannical and forbid you from being close to others?”
Shi Yining’s gaze turned cold. “If you don’t apologize, don’t call me Senior Sister ever again.”
Yushang’s face turned pale, and her eyes immediately filled with tears. “I’ll apologize, I’ll apologize…”
She quietly clenched her fists hidden in her sleeves. “Fellow Daoist Mo, I’m sorry…”
She thought that the fairy, known for her noble and magnanimous character, would easily let the matter slide. To her surprise, a cold voice reached her ears in the next moment.
“An apology like that lacks sincerity.”
Yu Chang looked up in disbelief. “What else does Fellow Daoist Mo want me to do?”
Shu Mo’s voice was extremely flat. “Make a vow that you will not be overly intimate with Fellow Daoist Shi in the future.”
“You…” Yu Chang’s brows arched as she wanted to retort, but fearing her Senior Sister’s anger, she endured her rage. With tears welling in her eyes again, she turned to the ethereal beauty.
“Senior Sister… listen to her. Is Fellow Daoist Mo’s request truly reasonable?”
Shi Yining coughed lightly. Even now, she still couldn’t be certain whether what she was seeing was an illusion or reality.
“Junior Sister… Fellow Daoist Mo has a point. We are merely members of the same sect, and it is indeed inappropriate for us to be too intimate. However, the requirement to make a formal vow is a bit heavy; a simple promise will suffice. As long as Fellow Daoist Mo is no longer angry, everything will be fine.”
Yu Chang pursed her lips, her eyes as red as a rabbit’s. “Senior Sister~”
Shi Yining hardened her heart and ignored her. “No acting spoiled. You must apologize when an apology is due; there is no running away from it.”
Her Senior Sister’s partiality was far too obvious. Faced with that woman, Yu Chang stood no chance at all. The girl completely deflated, turned around, and made her promise half-heartedly. “Please rest assured, Fellow Daoist Mo. In the future, I will maintain the proper distance from Senior Sister.”
A hint of a smile appeared on Shu Mo’s lips, and she let the matter drop.
Up to this point, the personality Yu Chang displayed was identical to the one in her memories. Shi Yining’s heart leaned toward the belief that this was not an illusion. However, to be safe, she planned to ask a few more questions for confirmation.
“Is Master in the sect?”
Yu Chang shook her head immediately. “Master has been traveling for the past few days, trying to find your whereabouts. I wanted to go along, but Master said someone must stay at Xigui Peak in case you returned, so that the news could be transmitted to her immediately.”
“Since Master isn’t here, what about Martial Aunt Shi?”
“Martial Aunt Shi has been at Wuchen Peak. Have you forgotten, Senior Sister? She has never left the sect in all these years.”
“When Fellow Daoist Mo and I were swallowed by the vortex, was the other demonic claw that emerged from deep underground destroyed?”
“The reinforcements from the three sects arrived shortly after. That demonic claw was turned directly into fly ash. Because something happened to you and Fellow Daoist Mo, the two Sect Leaders were furious and leveled the Ninefold Abyss to the ground… Master said later that they had underestimated this demonic plague from the start. Because the initial signs suggested the enemies weren’t strong—below the Golden Core stage—they didn’t go personally, which indirectly led to the disaster…”
Hearing these answers, Shi Yining felt somewhat relieved.
There were no flaws; she could basically confirm this was not an illusion. She truly had returned to the Xuanqing Sect.
However… new questions followed. The Extreme Cold Ice Field and the Xuanqing Sect were tens of thousands of miles apart; why were they connected?
Did Master… know about this?
“What are you thinking about, Senior Sister?”
“No… it’s nothing. My spiritual power hasn’t fully recovered yet, so I can’t perform long-distance sound transmission. Please inform Master that both Fellow Daoist Mo and I have returned safely.”
Yu Chang nodded quickly. Then, as if remembering something, her gaze swept lightly over Shu Mo. She gave her an obscured, meaningful look and hesitated. “It’s getting late. The Yuehua Sect is also looking for Fellow Daoist Mo…”
She didn’t finish her sentence, but the implication was clear: it was time for the guest to leave.
Shi Yining suddenly felt the long, jade-like fingers resting on her wrist tighten slightly. The force wasn’t heavy, but it made her swallow the words she was about to say.
A voice as clear as a mountain spring splashing on stones reached her ears. “Currently, it is inconvenient for me to move. I’m afraid I will have to stay at Xigui Peak for a few days.”
Yu Chang immediately protested: “That’s against the rules! The sect orders state that when guests visit, even if they stay overnight, they should be arranged at Yingke Peak!”
“Is that so?” Shu Mo’s voice turned slightly cold. “But I heard that back then, Fellow Daoist Fang of the Qishan Sect stayed at Xigui Peak. Could it be that the Xuanqing Sect’s rules made an exception specifically for her?”
Shi Yining explained gently: “This sect rule can be adjusted according to the situation; it doesn’t have to be strictly followed. Xigui Peak does have some vacant rooms. Fellow Daoist Mo can choose one later.”
“There is no need to choose,” Shu Mo interrupted softly. “I want to stay with Fellow Daoist Shi.”
These words were like a stone thrown into a heart-lake, rippling through Shi Yining’s soul. She subconsciously held her breath, many reasons regarding “impropriety” flashing through her mind.
“This…” The hesitation in her voice hid a trace of indulgence she hadn’t even noticed herself.
If it were her past life, she would have agreed to such a request without hesitation. But in this life…
The image of Jiang Liuyue surfaced in her mind without warning. Ever since Shu Mo appeared, she hadn’t seen her again. She didn’t know where that malevolent ghost was now…
Sensing her hesitation, a bitter curve suddenly appeared on Shu Mo’s lips. “It is inconvenient for me to move, and I cannot see for the time being. Does Fellow Daoist Shi really intend to leave me to live alone and fend for myself?”
Those few words seemed to hide dense needles that pricked Shi Yining’s heart.
“That wasn’t my meaning… Very well. Since Fellow Daoist Mo is willing, you shall stay with me.”
“Senior Sister!” Yu Chang stomped her feet in anxiety. “What do you mean ‘inconvenient to move’? Cultivators aren’t mortals. Even if she’s blind, she can perceive things through divine sense. Her daily life wouldn’t be affected at all! She’s clearly—”
“Enough!” Shi Yining interrupted her Junior Sister. “The matter is settled. Say no more.”
Just then, a mountain breeze blew by, brushing through their overlapping sleeves. Shu Mo turned her head to ‘look’ at the person beside her, her lips curving upward in a distinct, satisfied smile…
