- Chapter 2 - Haunted by a Malignant Spirit
Since she began pursuing Shu Mo, Shi Yining had faced repeated setbacks, but only that one particular occasion had caused her such utter humiliation.
As the Senior Disciple of the Xuanqing Sect, she had proactively forfeited during the first round of the Dao Discussion Assembly. She became a target of ridicule, bringing shame upon her entire sect and resulting in a last-place finish.
Because of this, her junior sisters gradually grew distant. Her Master was furious at her lack of ambition, yet ultimately could not bring himself to impose a severe punishment.
It was lamentable how obsessed and utterly foolish she had been then, leading her to such a miserable end…
After a long while, a sudden gust of cold wind blew outside the window.
Shi Yining was thinly dressed; the cold wind struck her face, making her shudder violently and scattering her chaotic thoughts into a mess.
It was clearly the beginning of summer and the weather should have been warm, yet at this moment, she felt as if she had fallen into an ice cellar.
She attempted to circulate her spiritual power to resist the sudden, eerie chill, but it had little effect.
Suspicion flared in her heart. Just as she prepared to release her divine sense to investigate the outside surroundings, a faint, phantom-like sound of breathing suddenly drifted into her ear.
“Who is it?”
Shi Yining’s gaze turned cold. She rose quickly, looking around with sharp vigilance.
Within her field of vision, there was no living thing.
“Who is playing tricks? Get out here!”
With a wave of her sleeve, the Star-Celestial Sword instantly materialized before her.
She knew that many ghostly entities existed in the world, but the Xuanqing Sect was protected by evil-warding arrays. Logically, no ghost should be able to approach silently. Therefore, she was convinced that someone was operating from the shadows.
The chilling aura surrounding her remained constant, showing no signs of weakening despite her words.
A moment later, a voice tinged with confusion came from outside the room.
“Senior Sister, has something happened?”
It was Yu chang.
Shi Yining’s tense nerves relaxed slightly as she walked slowly out of the room.
“Junior Sister, did you notice anything unusual just now?”
“I was practicing in my room and only heard Senior Sister’s voice.”
“When you came out, did you see anyone?”
“No…”
Shi Yining knew that continuing the questioning would yield no further results, so she said warmly, “It is late. You should head back, Junior Sister.”
“Alright. You should rest early too, Senior Sister.”
As Yu Shang faded into the distance, Shi Yining returned to the room and pulled out an evil-warding talisman with a flick of her sleeve.
In the next instant, the talisman spontaneously ignited without warning, turning into flying ash.
Seeing this, Shi Yining’s face turned pale.
Her previous judgment had been wrong… The only thing that could cause such a reaction from an evil-warding talisman was a ghost.
But there were clearly protective arrays within the sect; how did the entity enter so silently?
While her thoughts were racing, that faint sound of breathing drifted to her ear once more. The sound was extremely close, as if the entity was right beside her, pressed tight against her.
Simultaneously, the chilling aura surrounding her intensified.
Shi Yining’s hair stood on end.
She could not see the other party, but she could gradually feel its presence.
She had finally managed to escape the control of the “System”—had she just left the wolf’s den only to fall into a tiger’s mouth? To be controlled by a malignant spirit?
Could it be… that this was the price of her rebirth?
Or was it… the price for the sins of her past life?
In that moment, a profound sorrow overcame Shi Yining. The Star-Celestial Sword in her right hand fell to the ground with a clang, and she curled up against the side of the couch.
Why… why won’t they just let her go… Surely she had already paid for the sins of her past life with her very soul.
If her debts had not been cleared, why allow her to be reborn? It would have been better to go straight to the Endless Hell to atone for her karma…
In the life she led before entering the world of this book, Shi Yining had only lived to sixteen. Plagued by a congenital illness and tortured by pain year-round, her greatest wish back then was simply to have a healthy body.
Her wish never came true… She died on her sixteenth birthday and arrived in this world after death.
When she transmigrated, the original owner of the body was only twelve. Her hometown had been destroyed by a natural disaster; although she was saved by her Master, she suffered a high fever. When she woke up, she had become the “her” of today.
The cultivation world spoke of “soul-snatching.” Shi Yining had once worried that her Master would discover her soul was incorrect—that she was not the original person, but an interloper. After all, the Xuanqing Sect possessed secret methods to investigate such things.
Yet, for some reason, her Master never noticed.
When she first arrived and realized she possessed a healthy body that could move freely without pain, she was once ecstatic, thinking that heaven had taken pity on her and given her a second chance at life.
But that joy did not last long.
The appearance of an entity called the “System” shattered her peaceful life… She lost her past memories, and under the constant indoctrination of the System, Shu Mo became the sole purpose of her existence.
Shi Yining curled by the couch, recalling the events of her past life as if in an act of self-torture.
In her past life, the person she owed the most was Shu Mo, yet in both lives, Shu Mo was alive and well. So who was this malignant spirit appearing beside her now?
Two lines of tears fell down Shi Yining’s face. Her heart was filled with confusion; she had done many wrong things, but she had never truly taken a life.
The chilling aura around her grew heavier. Gradually, a humanoid figure appeared within her sight.
Though she couldn’t see the face clearly, she could tell it was a woman.
The figure pressed extremely close. Shi Yining tried to move away, sliding along the jade couch, but the figure followed her every move, never leaving her side.
She was forced into a corner with no way out.
“Who are you? What do you want?”
She asked the question casually, not expecting an answer, yet to her surprise, she heard a response.
“Jiang Liuyue.”
The ghost’s voice was unexpectedly pleasant, like a clear spring flowing through the mountains. It reminded Shi Yining of one person: Shu Mo.
She gave a self-mocking smile, thinking to herself that even in this new life, she still couldn’t forget that woman.
Since the ghost could communicate, the fear in her heart dissipated significantly.
“Since you have come to haunt me, do you know of my past?”
“I do,” Jiang Liuyue’s unhesitating response drifted to her ear once more.
Whether in her past life or this one, Shi Yining had never heard of this person’s name, let alone harmed her. She was puzzled—why was this person haunting her?
“Since you know my past, you should also know that I am not a good person. So, stay away from me, lest you be harmed by me one day.”
Hardly had she finished speaking when she heard a light chuckle from the figure before her.
An unprovoked sense of humiliated irritation flared in Shi Yining’s heart.
“What are you laughing at?”
Jiang Liuyue leaned closer to her. “I am already a malignant spirit; how could Miss Shi possibly harm me further?”
Shi Yining’s expression faltered, but she remained stubborn. “Even evil ghosts can be dissipated. Regardless, following me won’t lead to anything good. I’ve never harmed you—if you want to haunt someone, find someone else!”
Jiang Liuyue reached out and hooked a strand of the woman’s hair, twining it around her fingertip. “How can Miss Shi be so certain that you have never harmed me?” her voice asked with ambiguous intent.
Fury rose in Shi Yining. “This is nothing but Sophistry! I do not even know you, so how could I have harmed you?”
“Oh?” Jiang Liuyue countered. “Then does Miss Shi remember the flood in Baitang Village a month ago? You were ordered by the Sect Leader to manage it. Because the flood was severe upon your arrival and the levee was about to burst, you cast a spell to blow up Mount Molian to divert the water and save tens of thousands of lives. Is that correct?”
Shi Yining’s expression softened slightly as she nodded. “Yes, that did happen.”
Jiang Liuyue continued, “What if I told Miss Shi that I was on Mount Molian at that very moment?”
“Impossible! Before casting the spell to destroy the mountain, my junior sisters and I searched it thoroughly. There was no one there!”
“I was indeed on that mountain. I died because of you, Miss Shi, and my soul has followed you ever since. You possess memories of your past life; I possess mine as well, and I even followed you to the Underworld… Miss Shi, think carefully: if this were not the truth, why would I follow you, and how would I know your secrets?”
Shi Yining believed her. She slowly closed her eyes. “If you want me to pay with my life, you can take it now. I will not resist.”
A cold hand slowly settled upon her neck. Just as she expected it to tighten inch by inch, the sensation vanished.
At the same time, the silk ribbon tied tightly around her waist suddenly fell loose.
Sensing something was wrong, Shi Yining snapped her eyes open and gripped her clothes tight. “What are you doing?”
Jiang Liuyue’s right hand rested against her lapel, inching inward. The icy touch sent a violent shiver through her.
Shi Yining resisted instinctively, striking a palm toward the figure in front of her.
Unexpectedly, the attack hit nothing but air.
The ghost had no physical form, yet she was able to touch and restrain her.
Shi Yining was powerless against her. She was willing to pay with her life, but she could not endure being humiliated.
“Jiang Liuyue, since you are certain I harmed you, then just kill me swiftly!”
The hand resting against her skin paused abruptly at her words. “I never intended to take Miss Shi’s life.”
A glimmer of hope rose in Shi Yining’s heart. “If that is the case, let me go, alright?”
“No. If I let go, Miss Shi will surely run away.”
“I promise you, I will absolutely not run.”
Shi Yining tried to soothe the ghost, but in her heart, she thought that as soon as she gained her freedom, she would immediately flee and seek help from her Master.
She wouldn’t hurt Jiang Liuyue, but she didn’t want to be bound by her either.
Her plan was sound, yet the ghost seemed able to see through her thoughts. After she uttered that promise, the entity pressed her entire body close and gently bit down on Shi Yining’s right earlobe.
“Don’t…” Shi Yining struggled with all her might, but she couldn’t break free. A suspicious flush rose to her face.
Whether in her past life or this one, she had never been this intimate with anyone… even if the being before her could not be described as human…
“Mm… let me go!”
Shi Yining was filled with both shame and annoyance; she didn’t understand why Jiang Liuyue was treating her this way.
If everything the other woman said was true, then she was the one who killed her. Jiang Liuyue should hate her to the bone—so why… why would she do this?
Shi Yining couldn’t wrap her head around it as she was forced to endure the ghost’s biting.
Her clothes grew increasingly disheveled. The hands that were gripping her lapel were pried open bit by bit by a powerful force.
In that moment, a possibility occurred to Shi Yining.
“Jiang Liuyue, are you—are you doing this to me because you lack a ghost companion? Humans and ghosts walk different paths; it’s impossible for us to be together. If you want a companion, I can find a way to get you a gentle and lovely one… hiss!”
A sudden, sharp pain from her neck cut off the rest of her words.
“I only want you!”
