- Chapter 69 - Merely a Tool
“She’s talking to you. Say something in reply!” Lin Miaomiao poked Jiang Yan’s arm and whispered to her.
Jiang Yan looked at her, offering a strained smile. “If I told you I don’t know her at all, would you believe me?”
Lin Miaomiao’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of doubt in her gaze, wearing an expression that clearly said, “You guess if I believe you.”
Jiang Yan knew this would happen, so she simply stopped explaining and accepted the “guilt” directly. “I’m sorry. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have deceived your feelings, but I really don’t like you anymore. Can we just part ways amicably?”
Yin Ziyan hadn’t expected Jiang Yan to be so direct and was momentarily at a loss for words.
The two girls beside her seemed to be her classmates, advocating for her, but they didn’t dare question Jiang Yan. They only whispered to each other, likely condemning her.
“It’s okay, older sister. I don’t ask for you to like me. Just don’t hate me, and let me stay by your side, okay?”
Jiang Yan was completely stunned. Are kids these days talking this aggressively?
Staying by someone’s side when they don’t like you—is this looking for a backup or a mistress? She was speechless.
“Are you not listening to me? I said I don’t like you. The meaning of those three words isn’t that hard to understand, is it?”
The world is truly declining. In the morning, Gu Tang didn’t understand the meaning of a divorce agreement, and now, in the evening, someone else didn’t understand the meaning of “don’t like.” She truly wondered what they learned in school.
“Older sister, I understand.” Yin Ziyan lowered her head. Jiang Yan just felt annoyed. She finally went out and ran into a lunatic, completely ruining her good mood.
“How old is little sister? Has she attended school? Taken any medicine? All she learned in school was to falsely claim relatives? I’m the only daughter in my family. I have no younger sisters, no cousins, first or otherwise. Of course, if little sister wants to continue calling me that, it’s fine, but if you don’t have a peculiar liking for the words ‘older sister,’ please just call me by my name. I’m Jiang Yan, Jiang as in ginger, and Yan as in smoke.”
After Jiang Yan’s speech, the other three, excluding Yin Ziyan, stared at her with open mouths, seemingly shocked that she would suddenly lash out at someone.
Jiang Yan didn’t want to either, but she simply couldn’t stand this beautiful little “green tea” (a derogatory term for a two-faced person). Trying to do whatever she wants just because she looks good? I won’t fall for that.
The others thought she was too fierce and didn’t dare speak. Yin Ziyan, however, was completely unaffected, the playful amusement in her eyes intensifying.
Who wouldn’t love a fiery, beautiful older sister like this? Although the start wasn’t ideal, it didn’t affect her pursuit of the beauty. Having made up her mind, a strange sense of determination appeared in her eyes. She raised her glass to Jiang Yan and said, “Older sister, please don’t be angry. I was just playing a joke with you. I spoke inappropriately, so I’ll drink a penalty shot.”
She finished her drink cleanly, then poured herself another. “This is our first time meeting. Miaomiao-jie’s friends are our friends. Let’s all toast together.”
Lin Miaomiao certainly wouldn’t let her party atmosphere cool down, so she was the first to raise her glass. Jiang Yan also didn’t want to offend her friend, so she had no choice but to clink glasses with them.
Jiang Yan rarely drank alcohol. Normally, even a sip of an alcoholic beverage would make her face flush, so she always restrained herself. But today was her first day of “new life,” and she got a little carried away, accidentally drinking too much.
Lin Miaomiao couldn’t stop her. Seeing her down half a bottle of red wine, she could only hold onto her arm. “Baby, you can’t drink anymore. If you do, I’ll have to carry you back.”
“What nonsense are you talking about? I’m not drunk! I can hold my liquor just fine! Let go of me. I want to go up and perform a song!” Lin Miaomiao desperately held onto her, preventing her embarrassing attempt to go on stage and grab the microphone.
Yin Ziyan sat in the corner, a constant smile on her face, watching the red-cheeked and incredibly adorable Jiang Yan.
“Yanyan, you weren’t really dating Jiang Yan, were you?” Xia Lu, sitting next to Yin Ziyan, couldn’t help but ask, noticing her gaze was constantly glued to Jiang Yan.
Yin Ziyan turned back to her, her smile enigmatic. “You guess.”
Xia Lu pouted. How can she guess? Based on her understanding of Yin Ziyan, it was most likely false, an 80% chance she was itching to show off her acting skills. But her current state didn’t seem quite like an act. She had been staring at the woman all evening, as if afraid others wouldn’t know her intentions. She’s truly inscrutable.
After answering Xia Lu’s question, Yin Ziyan was called over by Lin Miaomiao.
“Yanyan, help me look after Yanyan for a moment. I’m going to the restroom. You absolutely, absolutely must hold onto her. Don’t let her out of your sight!”
“No problem, you go ahead.” Yin Ziyan took Jiang Yan from Lin Miaomiao’s arms, letting her rest on her chest. Smelling the faint scent of wine on Jiang Yan, Yin Ziyan felt a little intoxicated herself.
“Who are you? Let go of me right now!” Jiang Yan opened her eyes, glanced at Yin Ziyan, frowned in dissatisfaction, and struggled violently.
“Be good. I’ll let go when Miaomiao comes back.”
“Why should I listen to you? Let go of me now, or I’ll make you regret it!”
Yin Ziyan thought Jiang Yan was just making threats and didn’t pay any attention. A minute later, she felt a sudden numbness in her arm and unconsciously let go.
Jiang Yan smiled as she pushed her, swaying as she stood up. “Little thing, I’ve had some training.”
She walked through the crowd toward the stage. Yin Ziyan quickly chased after her, but was blocked by the people dancing below and couldn’t grab Jiang Yan. She struggled to move forward. After more than ten seconds, a familiar voice came from the stage.
“Next, I will perform a song for everyone: ‘I’m the Queen.’ I hope you like it. If you don’t, I’ll have you all dragged out and executed!”
The music was switching, and the entire bar fell into three seconds of silence, followed by whistles and cheers. Jiang Yan stood on the stage, microphone in hand, singing.
She was wearing a champagne-colored slip dress, her good figure fully exposed. Her face, illuminated by the lights, was stunningly beautiful. As she sang, some people even started throwing flowers onto the stage, and the atmosphere became even more enthusiastic than before.
Jiang Yan looked at the flowers and hurled them back one by one. Every bouquet accurately landed back in the lap of the thrower. Her aim was precise and ruthless. “Take this trash back and don’t interrupt me while I’m singing!”
Yin Ziyan wanted to go up and bring her down, but the stage was completely surrounded by people, and she couldn’t get through.
After the song was finished, the host, who was also the exotic dancer, asked her if she wanted to sing another one. Jiang Yan waved her hand, shouting into the microphone next to the host’s ear, “Don’t try to trick me! My singing is like the sound of nature. You commoners only need to hear it once. Don’t push your luck!”
The host was nearly deafened. He covered his ears and motioned for her to step down. Jiang Yan squinted and saw a familiar face in the crowd.
Gu Tang?
Why is she here? She looks like she’s in a bad mood.
Gu Tang brought over a dozen bodyguards and ordered them to clear a path. She walked to the edge of the stage, suppressing her anger, and said to Jiang Yan, “Come down. I’m taking you home.”
Jiang Yan walked up to her, leaned down to look at her, her eyes hazy, looking incredibly innocent and naive. “Who are you? Why should I go back with you?”
“Jiang Yan, my patience has limits.” Gu Tang almost gritted her teeth as she said this, glaring at the woman in front of her, wanting to tear her apart. She was still heartbroken over the divorce, yet this person was already out having fun in a place like this. Drinking was one thing, but singing on stage in such revealing clothes in front of a crowd? Does she not know how beautiful she is?!
“What does your patience have to do with me? I don’t know you at all,” Jiang Yan said. She straightened up, casually looked around, and saw Yin Ziyan. “Yin Ziyan, come here.”
Yin Ziyan obeyed, walking up to stand beside Gu Tang. Her voice was gentle: “Older sister, what can I do for you?”
Jiang Yan raised her chin haughtily. “Carry me down.”
Yin Ziyan glanced at Gu Tang, her smile widening. “Come down. I’ll catch you, older sister.”
Jiang Yan reached out, but Gu Tang ruthlessly interrupted her, putting her arm between the two women, her face flushed with fury. “Jiang Yan, are you trying to drive me crazy?!”
Jiang Yan looked utterly confused. “What are you talking about, madam? I don’t understand any of it. What’s wrong with letting my little lover carry me?”
Gu Tang’s face turned as dark as frost, and she gave her a murderous look. “Little lover?”
“That’s right! After all, I’m a normal woman. It’s completely normal to have a little lover, a white moonlight, or something, isn’t it? CEO Gu, do you think you’re the only one allowed to stay entangled with your ex-girlfriend and rekindle an old flame while I have to stick to a loveless marriage? You’re such a hypocrite.”
After softly and sweetly accusing Gu Tang, Jiang Yan smiled, patted her hand away, and jumped into Yin Ziyan’s arms.
Yin Ziyan caught her steadily, without even moving a step.
“Is this position uncomfortable? Should I switch to a princess carry?” Yin Ziyan’s voice wasn’t loud, but it was well within Gu Tang’s earshot. Gu Tang’s face was beyond ugly—it was a disaster.
Jiang Yan glanced at Gu Tang. Seeing her distress made her feel much better. She whispered into Yin Ziyan’s ear, “Just like this. It feels safer. My dad often carried me like this.”
Yin Ziyan: “…” She truly lives up to her ‘Queen’ title. Her approach is unique. She thought Jiang Yan would say something romantic. Clearly, she’s still too young.
Yin Ziyan turned around, holding Jiang Yan, but Gu Tang shouted at her. Gu Tang stood in front of her, her tone chilling. “I haven’t divorced Jiang Yan yet. Do you know what it means for you to be with her right now?”
Yin Ziyan lost the “weakness” she had shown in front of Jiang Yan. She looked directly at Gu Tang and said, word by word, “You’ll be divorced soon, won’t you?”
Gu Tang’s eyes turned even colder with rage, as if the surrounding air had dropped in temperature.
“Do you think you can walk out of this bar without my permission?”
“Well, let’s see, shall we?” Yin Ziyan said. She gestured to the bar manager who had rushed over. The manager immediately stepped forward and said to Gu Tang, “CEO Gu, please ask your people to leave, or I will call the police.”
Gu Tang stood still, her eyes fixed on Yin Ziyan. The manager was completely unfazed. He waved his hand, and dozens of people from the bar’s back area emerged, making the already crowded bar even more packed.
The confrontation between the two sides completely terrified Lin Miaomiao, who had just returned from the restroom. She thought Jiang Yan had gotten drunk and smashed up the place.
Jiang Yan’s intermittent dizziness returned. Only then did she realize, Am I actually drunk?
“Gu Tang, can you stop being so childish? What do you think you’re doing by blocking so many people here? Do you want to make tomorrow’s headlines?”
Gu Tang clenched her fists, struggling to suppress her temper. If Jiang Yan wasn’t still in Yin Ziyan’s arms, she would have punched Yin Ziyan long ago and wouldn’t have tolerated her arrogance.
Lin Miaomiao walked closer and realized Gu Tang had arrived. Even worse, Jiang Yan was being carried by Yin Ziyan and looked like she was enjoying it? Oh, the humanity!
Why did a scenario straight out of an idol drama have to happen right in front of her? If Gu Tang found out she was the one who brought Jiang Yan to the bar, she would surely be skinned alive.
She was wrong. She was truly wrong. She shouldn’t have become friends with Jiang Yan in the first place. If she hadn’t been friends with Jiang Yan, she wouldn’t have attended the same school as her from childhood. If she hadn’t attended the same school, she wouldn’t have been dragged to be a bridesmaid. If she hadn’t been a bridesmaid, she wouldn’t have been envious and stayed in the country. If she hadn’t stayed in the country, she wouldn’t have known Jiang Yan wanted a divorce. If she hadn’t known about the divorce, she wouldn’t have brought her to the bar. If she hadn’t brought her to the bar, the current situation wouldn’t have happened.
Why must she be tormented like this? This woman is truly a stumbling block to her happy life.
“Gu Tang, calm down. Yanyan is drunk. She probably can’t recognize people properly. Let me take her back. I will severely reprimand her!”
The moment Lin Miaomiao finished speaking, Jiang Yan interjected. “Who says I can’t recognize anyone? I’m completely sober! I just don’t want her to carry me.”
Lin Miaomiao gave Gu Tang an awkward smile and quickly covered Jiang Yan’s mouth. “Don’t be stubborn. We all know your tolerance for alcohol. You’re just talking nonsense when you’re drunk. I’m taking you home now, okay, sweetie?”
Jiang Yan blinked twice, shrinking further into Yin Ziyan’s embrace, making her intentions clear.
Yin Ziyan glanced at Gu Tang, her eyes filled with unspeakable pride and arrogance. “Yanyan is drunk. I’m taking her back now. CEO Gu, if you don’t want to leave, stay and have a drink. My treat.”
She turned to walk away. Gu Tang’s bodyguards were firmly blocked by the bar’s staff. Gu Tang was the only one who could move freely. To prevent a fight, Lin Miaomiao bravely stepped forward to stop Gu Tang.
“Gu Tang, let them go. I’ll keep an eye on Yanyan for you. I promise I won’t let her mess around.”
Gu Tang’s eyes were sharp and deep, staring at her like a hawk. She said, word for word, “That had better be the case, or I will make the Lin family disappear from this country.”
Lin Miaomiao broke out in a cold sweat and nodded repeatedly. “You can rest assured about my work. From today onward, I will eat and sleep with Yanyan. Wherever she goes, I’ll follow. I promise I won’t let her get involved with any outside wild… women.”
Her voice grew softer and softer. She was terrified that Gu Tang would get angry and deal with her first. Fortunately, although Gu Tang looked terrifying, she didn’t take any action, only giving a faint “Mm.”
Lin Miaomiao felt instantly relieved and quickly scurried out to chase after Jiang Yan and Yin Ziyan.
Gu Tang’s gaze followed her retreating figure. As she imagined Jiang Yan nestled in Yin Ziyan’s arms, the usually calm and composed Gu Tang exploded in a string of curses.
“F*ck!”
Ji Qiong, who had been watching the whole spectacle, walked over, put her hand on Gu Tang’s shoulder, and teased, “Oh dear, your delicate wife ran off with another woman. Our CEO Gu must be heartbroken, huh?”
Gu Tang turned her head to look at her, her eyes sharp. “If you have nothing to do, go mine coal in Africa.”
Ji Qiong immediately begged for mercy. “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please be merciful to me, old friend.”
Her father listened very closely to Gu Tang. If she made that suggestion, she would definitely be packed off to Africa, and she wasn’t a masochist.
Gu Tang left with a cold face, her bodyguards following her, looking formidable and intimidating.
The bar’s security guards quietly retreated. The manager stepped onto the stage and said with a smile, “There was a small interruption just now. We apologize to our guests. All consumption tonight will receive a 20% discount. We hope you won’t let the incident affect your mood. Let’s continue the music and dancing!”
Immediately, the music roared, and the stunned guests began to sway to the rhythm, as if the incident just now was merely a collective hallucination.
The night breeze cleared much of Jiang Yan’s drunkenness. “Put me down. I can walk by myself.”
Yin Ziyan pretended not to hear and continued walking toward the parking lot.
“I said put me down! Didn’t you hear me?” Jiang Yan pushed against Yin Ziyan’s chest, looking directly at her, her eyes showing slight anger.
Yin Ziyan stopped, looked down at her, and said in a very aggrieved tone, “Older sister, you’re being too unreasonable. You use me and then discard me? Am I just a tool for you to annoy your ex-wife?”
Jiang Yan felt a little guilty. She had indeed deliberately provoked Gu Tang just now. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have let Yin Ziyan carry her.
“Put me down first. We can talk about this slowly. I was wrong to use you. What compensation do you want? As long as it’s not too much, I can agree.” Paying to solve the problem. Compared to being persistently bothered by a bothersome graduate, spending a little money was nothing. After all, she was so poor she only had money left.
Yin Ziyan refused to let go, saying calmly, “Will older sister give me anything I want?”
“If it’s not too outrageous, I can consider it.”
“Then I want older sister’s heart.”
Jiang Yan: “…” This cheesy romantic line almost made her vomit. It’s 1202, and people are still saying this?
“I can’t give you that! That can no longer be described as ‘outrageous’; it’s wishful thinking and a pipe dream.”
Yin Ziyan chuckled and continued walking, holding her. “Then older sister can let me carry you to the parking lot. Consider that the compensation. It seems like someone is following us from behind. It might be your ex-wife’s people. Let’s keep up appearances.”
Jiang Yan looked over her shoulder. There did seem to be a figure behind them. Since she was feeling dizzy anyway, she decided to just let Yin Ziyan carry her.
“Which car is older sister’s?” Jiang Yan was dizzy and pointed vaguely at a car that looked appealing. “That one.”
Yin Ziyan chuckled again, took out a key, and opened the car. Jiang Yan looked at the key in her hand curiously. “How do you have my car key?”
Yin Ziyan just smiled without answering. She helped Jiang Yan into the back seat and then got in herself.
Jiang Yan was so dizzy she didn’t even notice this wasn’t her own car. In her daze, she felt someone hug her. She waved her hand impatiently and mumbled indistinctly, “I’m warning you… you… you better behave… or I’ll… I’ll…”
Yin Ziyan waited for a long time but didn’t hear the rest of the sentence. She looked down and found Jiang Yan had fallen asleep. She smiled, tucked her hair behind her ear, her eyes filled with tenderness.
She only wanted to tease her at first, but after spending some time with her, she realized Jiang Yan was such an interesting person. She didn’t want to hand her back to Gu Tang now.
Five minutes later, the designated driver arrived. The car drove all the way to the Lake Number One apartment. Jiang Yan was sleeping so soundly she didn’t even notice being carried to her doorstep by Yin Ziyan.
Hesitating for a moment between the two doors, Yin Ziyan finally chose the one on the right. She rang the doorbell and carried Jiang Yan into her own room.
The moment she touched the bed, Jiang Yan immediately snapped back to consciousness. She suddenly opened her eyes and looked at the face inches away, her gaze turning cold.
Yin Ziyan was unashamed. “I just wanted to help you change into pajamas. It’s not comfortable to sleep in a dress, is it?”
Jiang Yan’s eyes darted around a few times. Realizing this wasn’t her own place, she pushed Yin Ziyan away and sat up. “No need. I’ll change by myself.” She clearly and purposefully got out of bed, put on her shoes, and walked out. Yin Ziyan sat on the edge of the bed and smiled helplessly. It seems older sister misunderstood again.
