- Chapter 65 - Marital Crisis
Jiang Yan carried the finished lunchbox to Gu Tang’s company. Today was their third wedding anniversary, and she hoped Gu Tang could leave work early so they could go out to dinner together.
Even though they were an old married couple, Jiang Yan still liked this occasional bit of romance.
Unfortunately, Gu Tang was a stone-cold lesbian, focusing only on work. At home, it was just eating and sleeping. She had never given Jiang Yan a surprise. Comparatively, Jiang Yan was the one who invested more in the relationship.
But Jiang Yan didn’t mind. What could she do since she loved Gu Tang?
It was fine that she was a stone-cold lesbian; over time, that heart of stone would surely be warmed. Lately, Gu Tang seemed a little more attentive, which might mean she was close to success, right?
Jiang Yan chuckled inwardly, and the expression on her face became more joyful. She pushed open the glass door of HD Company and walked in.
The receptionist was surprised to see her, then quickly put on a professional smile. “Madam, why have you come?”
Jiang Yan found it strange. Usually, they would cheerfully joke, “Madam is here to see our CEO Gu again. Your relationship is so good.” Why the question today?
She remained vigilant, smiling as she held up the lunchbox in her hand. “I’m here to bring lunch to your CEO Gu. I’ll head up first.”
The receptionist rushed out, blocking Jiang Yan’s path. “Madam, CEO Gu is busy. How about you go up a little later?”
Jiang Yan looked at her evasive eyes, and her doubt grew. The smile on her face slowly faded.
“Xiao Li, are you hiding something from me?”
“No… no, I’m not.”
Li Man’s weak reply made Jiang Yan even more certain that she was hiding something from her, and it concerned Gu Tang.
Jiang Yan walked past her to the elevator and pressed the floor number. Li Man was desperately worried and quickly called the CEO’s office.
Jiang Yan arrived on the eighteenth floor and walked straight to Gu Tang’s office. The people who saw her greeted her, but their expressions were ambiguous.
Jiang Yan maintained a calm facade, politely responding to everyone, but the hand holding the lunchbox tightened slightly, her knuckles turning white.
When she reached Gu Tang’s office, she took a deep breath, put on a perfect smile, and tried to push the door. The door wouldn’t budge.
Jiang Yan’s smile froze. She tried to push it again, but it still didn’t move.
The door was locked from the inside.
Gu Tang never locked her office door. At least for the three years they had been married, Jiang Yan could always enter easily.
Combining the attitudes of the various employees and this locked door, Jiang Yan quickly formed a suspicion in her heart, though she dared not believe it.
She knew Gu Tang didn’t love her, so for the past three years, she never actively demanded anything. She even resigned from a top ten global design company to be a full-time housewife, all to better manage Gu Tang’s life. If Gu Tang had really cheated on her, what would she do?
Jiang Yan felt a frantic panic. Her hand holding the lunchbox squeezed tightly, leaving deep indentations on her palm.
“Madam, why aren’t you going in?” Su Yi said, then realized something, and her expression became slightly awkward.
Jiang Yan turned to look at her, hiding the emotions in her eyes, and said to her, “This is lunch for your CEO. Please give it to her for me. I have things to do at home, so I’ll go back now.”
She couldn’t face it and chose to run away.
Su Yi took the lunchbox from Jiang Yan’s hand. Before she could say anything, Jiang Yan had quickly left, her back looking thin and vulnerable.
“Tang Tang, someone came to bring you food.”
A clear voice rang out. Jiang Yan stumbled, nearly falling down.
She was certain that this voice did not belong to any of the secretaries in the CEO’s office, and it was a voice she was unfamiliar with.
Gu Tang, who had been sitting in her office reading documents, paused when she heard Qiao Ling’s voice. She got up and chased after Jiang Yan.
Jiang Yan endured the pain in her feet and hurried downstairs, running out of HD. The sky, which had been bright and sunny just moments ago, had quickly become overcast.
Jiang Yan didn’t notice the sky, only knowing she needed to escape this place.
She ran a long distance until her feet hurt so much that she couldn’t run anymore and finally stopped.
The high heels on her feet didn’t fit at all. Her heels were rubbed raw and felt burning hot.
Neither the haute couture suit she was wearing nor the expensive high heels were to her liking. These were all Gu Tang’s taste, not hers.
She always preferred simple clothes: a white T-shirt, jeans, and a pair of white sneakers, with no makeup on her face and no jewelry on her body.
Even after starting work, she never dressed formally, preferring to be free and unrestrained.
After marrying Gu Tang, she began to change herself, adapting her clothing and style to what Gu Tang liked, forcing herself to appreciate those things because she wanted to gain Gu Tang’s favor, to make her notice and like her.
In three years, she had almost forgotten what her original self looked like.
Unknowingly, it began to rain. At first, it was a drizzle, but then it grew heavier. Jiang Yan was quickly soaked.
Jiang Yan sat behind a large tree, curling up, watching the passersby, her heart numb.
Her phone rang. Jiang Yan didn’t want to answer, but the caller was persistent, ringing one after another. The noise gave her a headache. She took out her phone from her bag.
“Yan Yan, didn’t we agree to choose a restaurant this afternoon? You’re at home, right? I’ll come pick you up.”
The speaker was her best friend since childhood, Lin Miaomiao. Hearing her voice, Jiang Yan inexplicably wanted to cry.
“I’m outside. I might be late getting back. Why don’t you go ahead, and I’ll meet you at the destination.”
Having known each other for twenty-seven years, Lin Miaomiao could tell from her voice that Jiang Yan was upset. Her tone immediately became serious.
“It’s raining heavily outside. Where are you?”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll come find you later.”
Jiang Yan hung up and stared blankly, hugging her knees.
Gu Tang searched around but couldn’t find Jiang Yan. She felt a bit anxious, standing in the rain and looking around. Qiao Ling saw her getting wet and quickly held an umbrella over her.
“Tang Tang, let’s go inside. She must have gone home in this heavy rain.”
Qiao Ling pulled Gu Tang back inside. She didn’t care if Jiang Yan had gone home; she only cared about having some alone time with Gu Tang to rekindle their past relationship.
She had returned to the country yesterday, and the reason she chose this timing was, naturally, calculated.
Jiang Yan had been following Gu Tang since college. Gu Tang had always been cold towards this junior, and if Qiao Ling hadn’t gone abroad, how would Jiang Yan have had the opportunity to take advantage?
But now, she was back, and she would naturally reclaim everything that belonged to her.
Jiang Yan stood up. Her vision suddenly went dark, and she almost fell to the ground. She looked up, and Gu Tang’s figure was directly reflected in her eyes.
They looked so compatible, their shared umbrella forming a perfect picture.
Jiang Yan returned to the parking lot and sat in her car for a long time before driving away. When she changed her clothes, she felt a chill and her head felt heavy.
As soon as she finished changing, the doorbell rang.
Seeing it was Lin Miaomiao, she opened the door and welcomed her in.
“What happened to you? Why are you in such a mess?”
She had changed clothes as soon as she got back, and her hair was still plastered to her head. Of course, she looked messy.
“It’s nothing. I got a little wet on the way back. Sit down and wait for me for a minute. I need to take a shower first.”
Lin Miaomiao was confused by her actions. Shouldn’t she have showered first, then changed?
After an agonizing twenty-minute wait, Jiang Yan finally came out after showering. Although she still had that stunning face that made people want to have a nosebleed, Lin Miaomiao felt something was off.
She looked like she had cried.
“Jiang Yan, if you consider me a friend, tell me what happened. Don’t secretly hide and cry. That’s so cowardly!”
Jiang Yan thought she had concealed it well, but Lin Miaomiao had still seen through her. This woman was too perceptive.
“It’s nothing. Didn’t we need to book a table? Let’s go quickly, or we won’t get one.”
“Can’t you book a table with your phone? If you don’t explain clearly today, I’m staying at your house and won’t leave until Gu Tang comes back, so I can watch a live sex show.”
Jiang Yan blushed and glared at her. “What live sex show? We… don’t always…”
“Heh heh,” Lin Miaomiao scoffed. “You know whether she’s a beast or not. Did she make you angry?”
Lin Miaomiao understood Jiang Yan. Her personality was easygoing, and she wouldn’t get angry over ordinary things. The only person who could hurt her was Gu Tang.
Jiang Yan fell silent, no longer trying to avoid the topic with Lin Miaomiao.
This woman was like a worm in her stomach; she knew what Jiang Yan was thinking with just a glance.
“Miaomiao, I went to take lunch to Gu Tang today, and there was a woman in her office.”
“What’s wrong with having a woman there? Aren’t all her secretaries women?”
“The office door was locked from the inside, and the secretary wasn’t in there.”
“…”
It was Lin Miaomiao’s turn to fall silent, as she couldn’t think of any reason for Gu Tang to cheat.
“Don’t jump to conclusions yet. Maybe it was a business partner or something, discussing an important project, and she locked the door to prevent leaks. Gu Tang isn’t an idiot. She knows you bring her lunch every day. It doesn’t make sense for her to brazenly bring a mistress to the office.”
Jiang Yan had already been trying to find excuses for Gu Tang. Hearing Lin Miaomiao’s explanation, she forced herself to accept this reason and stopped overthinking.
Lin Miaomiao saw that the worry on Jiang Yan’s face had lessened and felt relieved. Before she could say anything, the door opened from the outside.
“Why are you back at this hour?” Jiang Yan asked in surprise.
Gu Tang, still damp, first looked at Jiang Yan, then greeted Lin Miaomiao.
Lin Miaomiao stood up from the sofa, a teasing look on her face. “Since your wife is back, I won’t be a third wheel. I’ll go book the table for you. I’ll send you a message when it’s done.”
She winked at Jiang Yan, picked up her bag, and walked out.
As soon as the door closed, Gu Tang pulled Jiang Yan into her arms, kissing her hair, her voice slightly husky.
“Why didn’t you come in when you arrived?”
“Weren’t you discussing a collaboration with someone? I didn’t want to disturb you.”
Gu Tang didn’t explain further. She picked up Jiang Yan and walked towards the bedroom.
After a passionate session, Jiang Yan felt completely drained, her bones weak. She closed her eyes, nestled in Gu Tang’s embrace.
“Miaomiao said you needed to book a table. What table were you booking?”
Jiang Yan pinched her chin, pretending to be angry. “Today is our wedding anniversary. Did you forget?”
Gu Tang seemed momentarily stunned, then hugged Jiang Yan tighter. “Of course, I didn’t forget. The gift is already prepared.”
A smile bloomed on Jiang Yan’s lips. She felt like she was surrounded by pink bubbles.
Ding-dong!Ā Gu Tang’s phone chimed. Gu Tang picked up her phone, glanced at it, released Jiang Yan, and turned her back to open the chat interface.
Jiang Yan casually glanced up, but the smile on her face froze.
That message stung her eyes, and the name made her heart seize up even more.
Qiao Ling!
When did she return, and when did they start contacting each other?
