- Chapter 29 - You're Really Annoying
Jiang Zhen spoke with a stutter. It was clear she had never done anything to please others before.
Her face remained expressionless and calm, but if you looked closely, you would find that her eyes were a little flustered, and her body was a bit tense.
Jiang Yan looked at her, the corners of her lips slightly curved, a hint of mockery in her eyes. “What is the General talking about? Did I hear you wrong, or are you talking to the wrong person? You’re actually asking what I want?”
Jiang Zhen looked away awkwardly. “Of course, I care.”
“Well, I’ll have to think about it…” Jiang Yan tilted her head. She looked past Jiang Zhen and saw Tang Rong, and an idea came to her.
“Then hunt me a beauty, someone as graceful and understanding as Sister Rong.”
Jiang Zhen’s hand clenched instantly, and her eyes grew colder.
Jiang Yan didn’t care if she was in a good mood or not. At least she was.
As a player, the worst thing you could do was fall in love with one person. She had already tasted the bitterness of love. Now it was time to move on and enjoy the field of flowers.
She walked straight to Tang Rong, hooked her arm around hers, and smiled radiantly. “Sister Rong, why didn’t you come to find me to play?”
Tang Rong also gave a faint smile. She glanced at Jiang Zhen and then said to Jiang Yan, “I saw you were talking to your sister, so I didn’t want to interrupt. Why didn’t you change your clothes for the hunt?”
Jiang Yan gave an awkward laugh. “That was a mistake.”
“There’s no point in being at a hunt if you’re not participating. I might as well have stayed at home and slept in. How about this? I have a spare riding suit in my carriage. If you don’t mind, you can change into it. We’re a similar height, so my outfit should fit you.”
Jiang Yan was about to decline, but then she saw Jiang Zhen walking over from the corner of her eye and changed her mind.
“Then I’ll trouble you to take me to change, Sister Rong. Later, I’ll go with you, Sister Rong. What kind of animal do you like? I’ll hunt one for you.”
Jiang Zhen, who had just reached them, stopped in her tracks, her eyes growing darker.
Tang Rong smiled and greeted Jiang Zhen, but the other person completely ignored her. Feeling a little awkward, she led Jiang Yan toward the carriage.
After a few steps, she asked Jiang Yan, “Sister Yan’er, do you feel like someone is watching us?”
Jiang Yan couldn’t help but curve her lips, but her voice was exceptionally serious. “Is there? Who?”
Tang Rong: “…”
‘Who else could it be? It’s your strange-tempered sister, of course.’
Ever since she started talking to Jiang Yan, she felt like someone was watching her. Now, she felt like daggers were being shot into her back.
‘It seems I’ll have to stay away from Jiang Yan in the future. The pressure is too much.’
Jiang Yan changed into Tang Rong’s riding suit. When she came out, she saw Jiang Zhen not far from the carriage. Her eyes were still cold. She was holding a bow and seemed to be staring at some prey.
Jiang Yan and Tang Rong mounted their horses together. After the Emperor of Yu gave the order for the hunt to begin, they headed into the forest. They were only there to have fun. While others were competing fiercely, they were leisurely, as if they were just taking a spring outing.
‘It would be even better if there was no one behind them,’ Tang Rong thought.
She glanced at Jiang Zhen, who was following not too far away, and said to Jiang Yan, “Sister Yan’er, why don’t we wait for your sister? She might have something to say to you.”
Jiang Yan said nonchalantly, “She probably has nothing to say to me. Even if she does, it’s nothing I want to hear. We’re here to have fun. We don’t need to worry about her.”
Tang Rong had no choice but to give up. She endured the feeling of daggers in her back the whole time and lost all desire to hunt.
As they went deeper into the forest, more prey appeared. Jiang Yan spotted a rabbit with floppy ears and put her index finger to her lips, signaling Tang Rong to be quiet.
“Sister Rong, I’ll catch a rabbit for you to play with.”
She lowered her voice and leaned slightly toward Tang Rong. From behind, it looked like they were whispering intimately.
Jiang Zhen drew her bow and aimed, her eyes narrowed. The arrow flew past Tang Rong’s cheek, directly pinning the rabbit to the ground. It didn’t even have a chance to struggle.
Tang Rong was so frightened that she turned her head. When she saw Jiang Zhen’s narrowed eyes, she swallowed the words on her tongue.
‘Now Jiang Zhen is a favorite of the Emperor. Even the Emperor has to rely on her. As a young Princess with no real power, I can’t afford to offend her.’
While she could swallow her anger, Jiang Yan could not. She comforted Tang Rong and then turned her horse around, walked up to Jiang Zhen, and looked at her with a serious expression.
“Did you do that on purpose?”
Jiang Zhen didn’t answer. She put away her bow. When she looked at Jiang Yan, her eyes softened.
“Don’t do things that hurt others and don’t benefit you. It’s childish.”
Jiang Yan knew she couldn’t reason with her at the moment, so she didn’t want to say anything more. She tried to turn back, but Jiang Zhen hooked her horse’s reins with the hilt of her sword.
Jiang Yan: “…”
‘So childish!’
“Are you blaming me for her sake now?” Jiang Zhen glanced at Tang Rong, and her gaze returned to Jiang Yan. Her eyes were dark, her emotions unreadable.
“Yes.” Jiang Yan gave her a firm answer. “Please stop following us. You’re really annoying.”
Jiang Zhen’s eyes suddenly narrowed, her voice cold and sharp, as if it was filled with ice.
“Annoying? You think I’m annoying?”
“Yes, I think you’re annoying! Since we’ve already made things clear, stop disturbing my peaceful life. What are you doing? Is this pity for someone you think is disgusting? Do you think my heartbreak made you feel guilty, so you asked Father to bring me out so you can show me your kindness and give me some pity, hoping that I’ll forget everything and go back to following you around and trying to please you like before? Jiang Zhen, you underestimate me too much. Do you think I’ll fall into the same trap twice?”
