- Chapter 12 - I'll Warm Your Hands
When Jiang Yan rushed to her mother’s courtyard, she saw Yuan Feng’s eyes were red and tear-stained. She looked much older.
Jiang Yan had come to comfort her mother, but after seeing her like this, she didn’t know how to begin.
Yuan Feng looked up, saw her daughter’s panicked expression, and pulled her into her arms.
“Don’t be afraid, Yan’er. Your father will be fine.”
Jiang Yan inexplicably felt like crying.
Her mother was already so sad, yet she was still comforting her.
She wished she could tell them everything Oscar had told her, to tell them not to worry about her father, but reality wouldn’t allow her to do so.
“Mother, please allow me to go to Jingcheng.”
Jiang Zhen stepped forward, knelt on the ground, her eyes resolute.
Yuan Feng was already in a state of agitation, and Jiang Zhen was speaking nonsense. She immediately became impatient and said, “You want to go to Jingcheng? You’ll be kidnapped by bandits and highwaymen halfway there. How will I explain that to your father?”
Jiang Zhen remained kneeling, her back straight, revealing a slender neck.
“Father’s whereabouts are unknown. It will take a few days for the court to send people there. I grew up in Jingcheng, and no one knows the area better than I do. I can surely find Father as quickly as possible.”
A flicker of surprise passed through Yuan Feng’s eyes, and then she frowned.
What Jiang Zhen said was not without reason. She was indeed the person most familiar with Jingcheng.
But to go there alone was out of the question.
Although she didn’t like Jiang Zhen, she couldn’t let her risk her life.
“You are not allowed to go. Don’t even think about it! You both wait for news at home. I’m going to the Prince of Xiangyang’s manor to discuss a plan with my brother. Do not go anywhere until I return!”
Yuan Feng wiped away the tears that fell, straightened her clothes, and held her back straight, once again looking like the noble General’s wife.
Since the news of Chengsha’s disappearance had reached her, those with “sharp ears and eyes” would naturally know as well. Countless eyes were now on the General’s Manor. If she showed any weakness, wouldn’t she be making a spectacle of herself?
Yuan Feng was born into a noble family and would never let anyone look down on her or the General’s Manor.
The snow was still falling, and a thick layer had accumulated in the courtyard. It made a crunching sound when she stepped on it. Yuan Feng was wearing a white quilted top with a high collar and a matching horse-faced skirt. She looked as if she had become one with the snow.
Watching her leave, Jiang Yan asked calmly, “Elder Sister, do you really want to go to Jingcheng to find Father?”
Jiang Zhen’s eyes were as firm as before. She looked up towards the southwest. “Of course.”
Not only did she want to find her father, but she also wanted to kill her enemies with her own hands.
She even knew who had framed her father!
Jiang Yan exchanged a few words with Oscar, and her eyes narrowed.
“Then let’s go, before Mother comes back.”
Jiang Zhen turned her head abruptly, meeting her cunning gaze.
“You mean, for me to sneak out?”
“Not you, but us.” Jiang Yan corrected her, turning and walking towards her own courtyard. “I’ll see you at the back door in a quarter of an hour. Don’t bring anything but the necessities. We’ll travel light.”
Before Jiang Zhen could fully comprehend what was happening, Jiang Yan’s figure had already disappeared.
At the Hantan Courtyard, inside the main room.
“Young Miss, take us with you! You don’t know martial arts. What if you encounter bandits on the road?” Qiu Yue looked at Jiang Yan packing her luggage, frantic with worry.
“Stop shaking. You’re making me dizzy.”
Jiang Yan said calmly, her face expressionless as she threw a dagger into the bag.
Although that useless system, Oscar, said there wouldn’t be any danger on this trip, it was better to be safe than sorry.
If they encountered bad people, she could at least defend herself and not be a burden to Jiang Zhen.
This mission didn’t have any special powers, and she wasn’t allowed to take any weapons from her treasury, which was extremely frustrating.
Fortunately, Jiang Zhen was skilled in martial arts, and small-time thieves wouldn’t be able to do anything to them.
The bag was practically weightless, truly “light.”
Before she left, the two maids looked at her with worried expressions. She was just as worried about the maids.
“If you two don’t want to be punished by Mother, you’d better come up with a decent excuse beforehand.”
After saying that, she walked away with her hands behind her back, feeling a sense of heroic freedom as if she were about to embark on an adventure. The two maids looked at each other in bewilderment.
Jiang Zhen was already at the back door, waiting for her.
Her bag was flat, like a mere accessory.
“The road ahead is dangerous. One wrong step and you could be doomed forever. You can stay in the manor and live your life as a young lady. You don’t need to take this risk. I’m enough to find my father on my own.”
Jiang Zhen had changed into a black suit of clothing. Her hair was tied up with a hair accessory, and she held a sword in her hand, looking heroic and cool.
Instead of being intimidated by her, Jiang Yan was filled with a sense of excitement for the future.
“Elder Sister, why are you being so wishy-washy?” Jiang Yan grinned, taking the first step outside.
Jiang Zhen’s eyes narrowed slightly, looking at Jiang Yan, who was bundled up like a ball. Her emotions were complicated.
She still had a fever.
What would happen if her condition worsened in this cold weather?
Unfortunately, by the time she wanted to call out to the disobedient little thing, the person was already gone.
In such cold weather, there was no way Jiang Yan could walk to Jingcheng.
She went to a carriage rental shop, threw a piece of silver to the owner, and said with an air of extravagance, “Sir, bring out the best carriage you have in the shop!”
The owner glanced at her, his eyes unblinking. His short, thick neck was tucked into his white fur collar. He replied in a flat voice, “Young lady, the best carriage costs ten taels of silver a day. How many days would you like to rent it?”
“Ten taels of silver?! Why don’t you just rob people?!”
This was much more expensive than a BMW!
The owner still had his lifeless expression, as if he knew Jiang Yan couldn’t afford it and didn’t plan to do business with her.
“That’s the price. Rent it or don’t.”
Jiang Yan was so angry she couldn’t speak.
‘This person looks down on me just because I’m wearing a maid’s outfit!’
“Yan Yan, don’t waste time.” Jiang Zhen said, tossing a piece of gold to the owner and saying in a cold voice, “Bring the horse!”
The owner’s face immediately lit up with a smile. He quickly had an apprentice get the best carriage ready and bring it out.
Jiang Zhen picked Jiang Yan up and placed her in the carriage. Then she used the momentum to get in herself. She cracked the whip, and the carriage sped off, scattering snow everywhere.
Jiang Yan swayed from side to side. After finally steadying herself, she lifted the curtain and said to Jiang Zhen, “I was going to hire a coachman. You were too hasty, Elder Sister.”
“No need. I’ll drive the carriage. The fewer people who know our whereabouts, the better.”
“It’s so cold and snowy. How can I let you drive the carriage?”
Jiang Zhen chuckled, her laugh filled with mockery.
“Do you think I’m like you, born a young lady?”
Jiang Yan was speechless and obediently went back inside the carriage.
The two of them successfully left the capital and traveled southwest. When dusk fell, they arrived at a small village.
Jiang Yan lifted the curtain, used Jiang Zhen’s hand to help her jump down, and then instinctively grabbed her cold, red hands and tucked them into her coat.
“Elder Sister, it’s warm in here. I’ll warm your hands for you.”
