- Chapter 74 - Pajamas
Shen Jinrong thought that this might just be a kiss. However, Yan He’s reaction was genuinely telling her that this was not just a kiss—Yan He wanted more, wanted everything. But Shen Jinrong knew there wasn’t much she could give her.
If she had to attach meaning to this kiss, she thought, it should be Yan He’s careful testing before a confession. She hadn’t refused. But—Shen Jinrong’s arms were wrapped around Yan He’s neck. She could feel Yan He’s hand wedged between her back and the wall, separating her from the cold surface. In front of her was a blazing, overwhelming kiss, as if all her feelings were being poured into this one moment, but behind her was icy cold. Even with Yan He’s hand there, it couldn’t block the slight chill seeping from the wall behind. Her hands unconsciously explored Yan He’s back. She didn’t attach any particular meaning to the action. She just thought that at this moment, anything was permissible, and whatever she did—was harmless.
Shen Jinrong’s eyes were blurred. She forced herself not to think about anything else, pouring her emotions into the moment, just like Yan He. She opened her eyes and intensified the kiss, instead forcing the original initiator to retreat repeatedly.
Yan He didn’t know what happened—her Elder Sister suddenly exerted force. Now, their positions were reversed; she was the one being pressed against the wall and kissed.
It was all her scent, all her breath.
Yan He suddenly felt an extreme sense of happiness, a happiness so profound that she would willingly die immediately at this moment. She thought of the volcano in Naples they had discussed. If the volcano really erupted, it would be fine for them to stay there forever together.
Bright white light seemed to shine before her eyes, in patches, briefly causing her vision to lose focus. Yan He’s mind was hazy. The scorching kiss in front of her made her mind blank. At this very moment, she was left with only one thought—to hold the person in front of her tight and not let her leave.
Even if only for a moment?
But her Elder Sister would not let her child be sad. When she felt a salty liquid fall on her lips, Shen Jinrong lowered her eyes and stopped the kiss. She placed one hand on Yan He’s waist to prevent her from sliding down and asked softly, “Why are you crying?”
Yan He was belatedly aware that she was crying.
She wondered, Why am I crying? Shouldn’t this be a happy moment? The person I like is right here. I am kissing the person I love. But why am I crying?
Perhaps she had seen too many happy people, and when such happiness fell upon her, she was crying tears of joy?
“I don’t know either,” Yan He decided to tell the truth. She was genuinely unclear why she was crying, only feeling that something was slowly growing within the fullness of her heart. It was like a seed—a seed that had appeared when she met her Elder Sister in Vienna in January—had now broken through the soil and sprouted a tiny bud.
“Don’t cry,” Shen Jinrong kissed her under the eye, gently saying, “Don’t cry, Bǎobèi.”
The word “Bǎobèi” (Baby/Darling) was a soft breath, whispered right next to her ear. It was like helpless indulgence, yet also a deep promise of affection. Yan He didn’t care about crying anymore. She suddenly widened her eyes and looked at Shen Jinrong, who was just smiling, as if the words just spoken had been an illusion of Yan He’s.
“You… what did you just call me?” Yan He shyly lowered her head, secretly glancing at her Elder Sister.
Tear stains were still on her face. Shen Jinrong smiled, took a tissue from her pocket, and gently wiped away her tears: “Elder Sister said, Bǎobèi.”
“Aren’t you my Bǎobèi?”
Yan He’s tail suddenly wagged: “Yes!” Her eyes were sparkling: “Of course I’m Elder Sister’s Bǎobèi!”
I can also be Elder Sister’s little dog!
A certain tail-wagging little dog thought secretly.
“Then listen to Elder Sister, don’t cry,” Shen Jinrong took her hand and kissed the corner of her lips again: “Alright, do you still want to look around?”
Yan He looked at her with moist eyes, as if looking at her entire world. She shook her head. She didn’t want to continue strolling. They had been on a plane for more than ten hours, and her Elder Sister must be very tired now, right? She had seen her yawn several times during dinner.
“Then let’s go home with Elder Sister, okay?” Shen Jinrong’s gentle voice sounded in her ear, a consultation and a suggestion.
“Okay,” Yan He agreed without hesitation.
Seeing Yan He smile, Shen Jinrong also joked: “You trust Elder Sister that much? Aren’t you afraid Elder Sister will sell you?”
The little dog held her Elder Sister’s hand and raised her tail proudly: “Not afraid!”
Shen Jinrong raised an eyebrow. She always possessed endless charm when she raised her eyebrow: “Then Elder Sister will sell you right now.”
“Elder Sister, please buy me,” the two had walked out into the open area. The bright lights only enhanced the sparkle in the child’s eyes, like they were filled with starlight: “Then I can truly belong to Elder Sister!”
Shen Jinrong rubbed her head: “Alright, then Elder Sister will take you home, okay?”
Yan He smiled and rubbed against her hand.
Under the bright lights, on this wide-open street, passersby hurried by, and there was the occasional noise of cars and crowds, but Yan He couldn’t hear anything else.
She turned to look at Shen Jinrong, only hearing her say, “Take you home.”
Elder Sister is taking me home!
A certain little dog happily thought, Should I go home with her? I really want to go home with her!
She squeezed her Elder Sister’s hand, their fingers intertwined, exchanging each other’s body temperature.
“Then it’s settled. You can’t abandon me,” Yan He walked with her head down for two steps, then turned back to look at her.
Shen Jinrong chuckled: “Alright, of course I won’t abandon our little dog.”
Yan He happily kissed the corner of her lips right there on the street.
Later that night, Yan He took her pajamas into the bathroom and changed into her little dinosaur pajamas. Her Elder Sister was wearing glasses and looking down at her iPad, presumably handling some work.
Yan He finished changing and spent a long time looking at herself in the bathroom mirror. Finally, she took a deep breath and walked out.
Shen Jinrong heard the sound of her coming out. Without looking up, she just said, “If you’re done washing up, you can go to sleep first. I still have a little work to finish—” As soon as the words left her mouth, she saw two short, green legs appear in front of her. Shen Jinrong widened her eyes, slowly looked up, and was met with a conflicted-looking Yan He wearing the little dinosaur pajamas.
The child was nervously pinching the hem of her clothes, looking down, afraid to meet her eyes. She softly asked, “Does it look good?”
Shen Jinrong raised an eyebrow. A flash of amusement quickly crossed her eyes, but she concealed it well enough that Yan He didn’t notice. Her Elder Sister pretended to be serious and beckoned Yan He over: “Come here for a moment.”
Yan He took two steps: “What is it?”
“Is there something on your little dinosaur—cough—on the back of your pajamas?” Her Elder Sister pointed to the area behind Yan He with a serious expression, while wearing glasses.
Yan He looked utterly nervous: “Ah? What?” She turned around, twisting her head to look behind her: “No, right? What, what? Is there something there?”
While Yan He was turned around checking behind her, Shen Jinrong put down her iPad, quickly reached out one hand, and swiftly grabbed Yan He’s tail.
Yan He, whose tail was grabbed: QAQ!!!
What are you doing, what are you doing! How can you do this! How can you bully a little dog like this!!!
Shen Jinrong exerted some force, and Yan He obediently sat down on the armrest of the sofa, following the pull of her own tail.
The child pouted: “Don’t pull my tail!”
Shen Jinrong played with her tail: “What will happen if I pull it?”
The child opened her mouth, deliberately showing off her little canine tooth: “The little dog will bite.”
Shen Jinrong raised an eyebrow and smiled, not taking the child’s soft threat seriously. While rubbing the little dinosaur’s tail, she said with a cheeky smile, “I’ve already been bitten.”
Yan He: O v O! Oh yeah! I bit her! Hehe!
The child became more conflicted: “But I haven’t pulled Elder Sister’s tail!”
Shen Jinrong didn’t react immediately and instinctively denied: “What tail? I don’t have a tail, do I, little dinosaur?”
“How can you not have a tail!” A mischievous smile flashed in Yan He’s eyes: “I saw it before! Elder Sister’s cow-print pajamas that you wore this morning! It has a tail!” She used her hand to show the length—”—That long of a tail!”
Shen Jinrong: !!!
How did she manage to catch my little tail!
Shen Jinrong angrily increased the force with which she stroked Yan He’s tail: “I forgot!”
Yan He stiffened her neck: “No, you didn’t!”
“I forgot!”
“Don’t want to!”
Shen Jinrong puffed out her cheeks and began negotiating with Yan He: “Then what do I have to do for you to forget?”
Yan He raised an eyebrow, a sly smile on her face: “That depends on how Elder Sister is willing to bribe me!”
Shen Jinrong pursed her lips, hesitated for a moment, then pulled the little dinosaur’s collar with a firm tug. Then, to Yan He’s astonishment, she kissed the corner of her lips.
“Is that enough?”
Yan He blinked: “It doesn’t seem like enough, Elder Sister.” Her eyes darted around: “It seems like there was a cow-print pajama suit—” Shen Jinrong angrily bit her on the lip.
“Oh dear, I still can’t forget it. It seems like there was a very, very long tail—” Shen Jinrong took a deep breath and gave Yan He, who was lying across her lap, a smile: “Still remember it?”
Yan He leaned in to kiss her: “My memory is too good.”
Shen Jinrong let out a “hmph.”
Seeing that she had annoyed her Elder Sister, Yan He quickly rolled off and handed her tail to her Elder Sister, saying appeasingly, “Elder Sister~” Shen Jinrong remained unmoved.
“Elder Sister, touch my tail, please!” Yan He crouched in front of her, rubbing against her thigh in an attempt to please her.
“Didn’t you just say I couldn’t touch it?” Shen Jinrong looked straight ahead.
“It’s okay now!” Yan He simply straightened up and sat directly on her Elder Sister’s lap, looking down at her: “Elder Sister, kiss me again, and I’ll forget about the cow-print pajamas.”
Shen Jinrong was skeptical: “Really?”
Yan He raised her hand to swear: “Really.”
Shen Jinrong then kissed her again. Before she could pull away, Yan He wrapped her arms around her neck and deepened the kiss. Amidst the intertwining of their lips and tongues, Shen Jinrong widened her eyes, vaguely feeling that she had been tricked.
When her Elder Sister was leaning against the sofa, panting, with flushed cheeks, the thoughtful little dog wiped away the trail of saliva at the corner of her lips and kissed the red lips she so adored.
“Have you forgotten now?”
Shen Jinrong was breathless, her voice airy.
“I’ve forgotten,” Yan He kissed her forehead, her voice tender: “But I will always remember you.”
