- Chapter 106 - The Phone Call
At three-thirty in the morning, Shen Jinrong woke up once. She realized she was feeling a little hot. Moving slightly, she found herself nestled in Yan He’s embrace. The younger girl’s body temperature was high, and Shen Jinrong had broken into a light sweat. She shifted her position but heard Yan He let out a soft groan.
“Jiejie…” the young girl mumbled.
Shen Jinrong realized she was wearing nothing. She sniffed, feeling a slight obstruction in her breathing. Could she be catching a slight cold? She breathed with her mouth half-open a few times, which made her feel a little better.
It was only then that she noticed her hand seemed to be resting on something soft. Blushing, she moved her hand away and cautiously moved the arm Yan He had wrapped around her to the side.
“Mmm…” After Shen Jinrong left her embrace, Yan He seemed to sleep restlessly. She smacked her lips and subconsciously tried to find the person in her arms, but failed to do so.
Shen Jinrong sat up straight. All the lights in the room were off. For a moment, she couldn’t even recall how she got from the hot spring to lying on the bed. She only vaguely remembered that it was after they had done it for the third time that she had fallen into a deep, drowsy sleep. Yan He had carried her to wash up and then placed her on the bed.
—She must not have been asleep for long.
Shen Jinrong could feel an ache all over her body, especially in her lower back. It felt as sore as if she had sat with her back straight for days; it hurt with every movement. She rubbed her waist, then remembered the bruise on Yan He’s lower back from hitting the box. She decided to go, naked, to find the medicine and apply some for her.
The ointment was cold. When it touched Yan He’s skin, she instinctively flinched away but quickly sank back into a deep sleep.
Shen Jinrong lowered her eyes, looking at Yan He’s peaceful sleeping figure, her heart filled with tenderness. She raised a hand and gently stroked Yan He’s hair. The ends of the young girl’s hair were still slightly damp. Could she have avoided drying her hair for fear of waking her?
Shen Jinrong played with that strand of hair until the tips of her fingers were also damp before she stopped.
Her fingertip started at the eyebrow, slowly tracing the bridge of Yan He’s nose, finally resting on her tightly pressed lips. Yan He’s sleeping face was a little more serious than usual; the lips that always curved up in a smile were now a straight line.
“What is there to be worried about, ah…” Shen Jinrong touched her hair, shook her head, and laughed softly.
Her voice only appeared for an instant, then scattered with the wind, as if everything just now was an illusion. Shen Jinrong wondered if she had actually spoken or just thought it in her heart without uttering it.
She leaned over, feeling a belated sense of coldness. At first, it was just her arms that felt cool, and then other parts of her body began to feel cold, eventually manifesting in her fingertips. She looked down at Yan He, covering her bare arm with Yan He’s. The warm touch slightly settled Shen Jinrong’s heart.
She had given herself completely to Yan He.
Without reservation.
At their peak, her eyes had lost focus, and a white light and many scattered, hazy spots had appeared before her. Through that thin mist, she seemed to see brilliant flowers opening before her.
First, there were the scattered dots of baby’s breath, but then the large patch of baby’s breath became merely a foil. More brilliant red roses appeared, blooming perfectly along the thorny green vines. The vivid scarlet almost filled her entire vision. She let out a long breath, her brain experiencing hallucinations due to oxygen deprivation.
She lay down again, nestled in Yan He’s embrace, her ear pressed against her chest, listening to Yan He’s heartbeat. Strong and powerful, one beat after another. She had never listened to Yan He’s heartbeat so quietly before—or rather, she had never listened to anyone else’s heartbeat besides her own.
Human life is so marvelous, truly a display of the Creator’s partiality, and Yan He was a prime example of the Creator’s favor. Shen Jinrong had thought this countless times.
Gradually, she also heard her own heartbeat. Her heartbeat was not as steady and powerful as Yan He’s at first, but later—perhaps because the two were so close—she noticed the interval between their heartbeats gradually lessening, eventually merging completely.
Even the frequency of their breathing was so similar.
Shen Jinrong secretly left her mark on Yan He’s neck. As she did this, she suddenly felt a long-lost familiarity, as if she had done this before.
And so, Shen Jinrong remembered that night in Vienna—that unforgettable night—when she had also done the very same thing—leaving a mark on Yan He’s neck.
But why did she leave a mark that time? Why did she bring Yan He back to her room?
She thought, perhaps it was because she saw a familiar light in Yan He’s eyes, a faint glimpse of her own past self. Yet, the reason she came up with couldn’t even convince herself; it was like trying to conceal the truth.
She couldn’t figure out why she had left a mark on Yan He’s neck. Why? Could it be that her possessiveness towards Yan He had already begun at that time?
Possessiveness—a word Shen Jinrong had never thought would apply to her. Her life experience, from childhood to adulthood, told her that nothing, apart from the knowledge she gained, would ever belong to her permanently; even if she could briefly possess something, she would quickly lose it.
She had become accustomed to the fear of loss, and thus, became numb. Gaining and losing was not that important to her; even if she didn’t get something, she wouldn’t harbor resentment.
—But with Yan He, it was different. From the moment she first saw Yan He, Shen Jinrong knew that Yan He was different. She was completely different for her. That young face was full of vitality, and her beautiful eyes, whenever they glanced at her, were filled with joy and sincere admiration.
She was not like others.
Shen Jinrong slightly lifted her head in Yan He’s arms and gently bit her chin.
Mine. Already mine.
She was satisfied.
Hmph, all of her is mine.
Yan He’s scent was clean and crisp, smelling somewhat like fruit. Shen Jinrong remembered it not being like this before, but after their intimate exchange, Yan He’s body had taken on her own scent. This realization utterly satisfied Shen Jinrong, prompting her to kiss Yan He’s lips with a good mood.
In her sleep, Yan He instinctively tried to find her sister, but after searching for a long time with her eyes closed, she couldn’t find her sister’s lips. She had no choice but to pitifully hold her sister tightly to draw warmth.
Shen Jinrong was amused by her little-beast-like instinctive action and leaned over to give Yan He a soft kiss on the lips.
“Time to sleep.” She patted Yan He’s back.
Yan He obediently held her, burying her face in the crook of her neck, and called out indistinctly: “Jiejie.”
“Mm, go to sleep now.”
“Darling…”
Shen Jinrong laughed softly: “Mm.”
“She’s mine.”
“Yes, she’s yours.”
Yan He fell into a deep sleep. As drowsiness gradually crept up on her, Shen Jinrong also yawned. She felt tired, her body extremely fatigued, yet her mind was alert. She didn’t know what she should do now. Should she go back to sleep? Or get up and handle work?
It was strange, Shen Jinrong thought; she previously had trouble even falling asleep, barely managing with the help of melatonin, but now she felt drowsy.
Then let herself indulge.
Shen Jinrong thought, she could be saved too.
The next morning, Shen Jinrong was woken by a tingling sensation on her wrist. A wet tongue was licking the scar that had long since healed on her wrist. The gentle comfort roused Shen Jinrong from her deep sleep.
She had slept without dreaming.
She had slept so well last night.
The blackout curtains weren’t perfectly sealed. A sliver of light shone through the gap, casting a golden patch on the floor. Shen Jinrong covered her eyes with her hand, adjusting to the room’s light for a while before making out the culprit.
“What are you doing, ah…” Her voice was soft, carrying the lingering haze and hoarseness of just waking up. Shen Jinrong squinted, trying to clearly see Yan He, but her eyes wouldn’t focus right away. She subconsciously rubbed her eyes, and the next second, she met Yan He’s bright, sparkling eyes.
“Jiejie.”
Yan He called her name, her voice containing an excitement that even the still-drowsy Shen Jinrong could detect: “You’re awake?”
“Mm.” Shen Jinrong sniffed, a slight nasal tone in her voice. She heard herself ask, “What time is it?”
Yan He replied, “It’s only seven-thirty in the morning.”
Shen Jinrong moved her body, only to find the soreness she had felt upon waking yesterday was now even more pronounced. She couldn’t help but let out a soft moan and glared at Yan He with a playful scold: “Why are you up so early?”
“I’m happy.” Yan He smiled. She tilted her head and again pressed a reverent kiss on the location of Shen Jinrong’s wrist scar, whispering, “It’s still early; Jiejie can sleep a little longer.”
“It’s not too early.” Shen Jinrong remembered. She rubbed her temples, instinctively reaching for her phone. She searched for a while before realizing she had left her phone next to the bouquet of roses after her shower last night.
The roses, which were still in their wrapping last night, had been taken out by Yan He at some point, carefully trimmed stem by stem, and placed into the hotel’s silver vase.
The vibrant red roses bloomed enchantingly in the silver-white vase.
“Can you hand me my phone, ma?” Shen Jinrong patted Yan He’s shoulder.
The younger girl then emerged from under the covers without any reservation, walked over to the vase naked, and retrieved her phone. As she returned, Shen Jinrong even noticed the distinct lines of her abdominal muscles.
Shen Jinrong: …covers eyes.
“Someone called you, a?” Just as she reached Shen Jinrong, Yan He saw her phone screen light up. There was no sound or vibration. She glanced at it, and two clear characters were displayed on the caller ID—Tan Ning.
“It’s Teacher Tan’s call.”
Yan He was still smiling as she handed the phone to Shen Jinrong.
Shen Jinrong frowned slightly. As she answered the call, she heard a rapid stream of words from the other end.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, her face suddenly turned deathly pale.
