What to Do If the White Moonlight Omega Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 26
Yan Qingran sent her birthday wishes the very moment August 31st arrived, valuing the sense of ritual just as much as anyone else.
From next door, a certain ambiguous sound drifted over with the same timing and the same frequency. She sighed, expertly plugged her ears with earplugs, and lay on the bed staring at the ceiling while letting her mind go blank. A young couple had moved in recently, and the nocturnal performances were relentless, sometimes grand and passionate, sometimes lingering and melodious. It was quite a show.
Her phone buzzed. It was 12:01 AM. Cha Yuxuan had replied, much faster than she had expected. They exchanged a few messages before wishing each other goodnight.
Yan Qingran glanced at the gift box by her side, tucked it into a gift bag along with a handwritten card, and set it on the nightstand. Just before falling asleep, she whispered to herself, “Happy birthday, little one.”
Outside, the bright moonlight was gradually swallowed by gathering dark clouds. The wind picked up, forcing the tree branches into a chaotic dance. A flash of lightning tore through the sky, followed by a thunderous crack, and rain began to pelt down on the roof, the leaves, and the grass. A heavy downpour arrived quietly while the world was dreaming.
The next morning, Yan Qingran’s internal clock woke her up. The rain had just stopped, though the clouds hadn’t fully dispersed. The air smelled of damp mist, and the roads and car windows bore the messy traces of the storm’s indulgence.
She checked her weather app: cloudy turning to overcast. After noon, it would be clear. Fortunately, the BBQ plans weren’t ruined.
At 2:30 PM, she set off for Cha Yuxuan’s house. It was a bit far, located in the outer suburbs at the Greenery Villa District. The GPS estimated fifty minutes, but she arrived at 3:10 PM.
“Bro! A guest is here. Go get them!” The intercom chimed. The guard mentioned a visitor was at the gate.
Xue Jiu, wearing an apron and working hard in the kitchen, called back, “I’m marinating the pork belly! You go.”
“It’s Yan Qingran! Go get her; she’s the one I called to help you,” Cha Yuxuan shouted, walking toward the stairs. “I haven’t changed yet, and my hair is a mess. It’s not good to go out like this.”
Xue Jiu grumbled as he tossed his disposable gloves into the trash. “What’s wrong with that? It’s not like she’s a stranger.” Despite the complaints, he took off his apron, swapped his shoes, and headed out to meet her.
Cha Yuxuan dashed to her bedroom, picked out one of her rare long dresses, combed her hair neatly, and applied a coat of dusty rose lipstick before heading down.
When Yan Qingran entered, she saw her descending the stairs. It was her first time seeing Cha Yuxuan in a dress. The girl looked completely different from her usual brash image; having differentiated as an Omega, she now carried a softer, more elegant aura. Yan Qingran found herself staring at those red lips; dusty rose suited her well.
Cha Yuxuan was checking her out too. The Senior was wearing a silk Hong Kong-style floral shirt paired with jeans and sneakers, which gave off a very cool older sister vibe. It was nice.
Yan Qingran handed over the gift. “Happy birthday.”
“Thank you.” Cha Yuxuan took the gift and stepped forward to give her a light, polite hug. It was a fleeting contact, but Yan Qingran suddenly felt a pang of greed for that closeness, the warmth of her palms, and that heart-racing scent of Omega pheromones.
“I’ll open it tonight,” Cha Yuxuan said with a smile.
Yan Qingran hummed in response, looking around. As was her habit in new places, she began scanning the decor. Her eyes lingered for a few extra seconds on a piano.
Seeing her interest, Cha Yuxuan led her over and pulled back the dust cover. They sat side by side. “Want me to play for you?”
“I’d love that,” Yan Qingran agreed.
Cha Yuxuan’s fingers hit the keys. After a moment of thought, she began to play. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with genuine emotion, moving through two classical pieces. Yan Qingran watched her profile and her fingertips, completely immersed.
As the third piece began, Cha Yuxuan stopped looking at the keys and turned to meet Yan Qingran’s eyes. Understanding the invitation, Yan Qingran placed her hands on the other side of the keyboard, joining in. As the music reached its crescendo, they were perfectly in sync, without a single missed note or hesitation. The melody rippled through the small house, soothing away any restlessness.
When the piece finished, Cha Yuxuan teased, “Why didn’t you tell me you were this good? You made me look like an amateur showing off in front of a master.”
Yan Qingran stood up and praised her sincerely, “Not at all. You were wonderful.”
After about half an hour of chatting, Cha Yuxuan grew tired and curled up on the sofa with her phone. Yan Qingran offered to help in the kitchen. “Go ahead, go ahead,” Cha Yuxuan waved lazily. As Yan Qingran walked away, Cha Yuxuan called out, “Smart and handsome Sister Yan, I want honey mustard grilled chicken wings.” She blew a kiss and looked at her with puppy-dog eyes.
Her act was getting much stronger. Yan Qingran nodded helplessly. “I’ll do my best.”
Cha Yuxuan beamed, miming a heart launch. “Biu-biu! Love ya!”
A flush crept onto Yan Qingran’s face. She stumbled slightly, thinking: If only that ‘Love ya’ wasn’t a joke.
In the kitchen, Xue Jiu was slicing beef. “I’ll wash the vegetables and potatoes first,” Yan Qingran suggested, “then marinate the wings. She said she wants honey mustard.”
“The honey and mustard are in the fridge,” Xue Jiu noted. He looked at the apron in her hand. “Want me to tie that for you?”
“No need, your hands are messy. I’ll ask Chacha,” Yan Qingran said.
She walked out to the living room, holding the apron strings. “Can you help me tie this?”
“Sure.” Cha Yuxuan stepped behind her, pulling the strings tight. “Too tight or too loose?”
Yan Qingran adjusted the front, her hands brushing against Cha Yuxuan’s as she handed the strings back. “Too loose.”
Cha Yuxuan tightened them according to her instructions and tied a neat bow. “Done!”
Yan Qingran returned to the kitchen. Soon, Xue Lanlan returned from the office carrying a large two-tier cake. She gave her daughter a big hug. “Happy birthday, baby.” Then she handed over a car key. “Your gift. But you can’t drive it until you get your license.”
Xue Lanlan heard voices in the kitchen and narrowed her eyes. “I’ll go see how your brother is doing.”
“Have some yogurt first,” Cha Yuxuan suggested, sensing her mother’s curiosity.
“I’ll just take a peek,” Xue Lanlan insisted, wondering if her son had brought a secret girlfriend home.
Inside, Yan Qingran was skewering meat while chatting with Xue Jiu. “Grilled meat alone is too heavy; I’ll cut some fruit later.”
Xue Lanlan marched in, but stopped short when she saw it was Yan Qingran. She gave an awkward but polite smile. “Xiao Yan! Come out and rest. Xiao Jiu can handle this alone.”
“It’s okay, Auntie. I’m just helping a bit.”
“Nonsense! We don’t make guests work.” Xue Lanlan practically unzipped the apron herself and ushered Yan Qingran out of the kitchen.
Cha Yuxuan shifted to make room on the sofa. “Xiao Yan, chat with Xiaoxuan. I’m going upstairs to change,” Xue Lanlan said, still in her formal office suit.
Yan Qingran was sweating slightly and smelled of seasonings and raw meat. She quickly wiped her brow with a tissue, waiting for the smell to dissipate. Cha Yuxuan noticed her sniffing herself and turned the AC down. “Here, let me spray you.”
Yan Qingran moved closer. She smelled like a mix of honey and chili. “Are you planning to grill yourself, Senior? You’re already marinated,” Cha Yuxuan joked.
Yan Qingran held out her arm. “Want a taste?”
“No thanks!” Cha Yuxuan laughed, spraying perfume on her neck, behind her ears, and on her shoulders. She thought about spraying the back of her neck but decided that the perfume couldn’t compare to Yan Qingran’s natural pheromones.
A faint scent of camellia filled the air; it was the same perfume Cha Yuxuan had used every day before she differentiated.
Cha Yuxuan leaned in and sniffed. “There, the messy smells are gone. Now you smell like me.”
The words were unintentionally intimate. Yan Qingran’s mind immediately wandered. She wanted Cha Yuxuan to smell like her too, but that was something only a temporary or permanent mark could achieve.
Cha Yuxuan recalled that day, which still made her blush a little. “It smells really good, but it can’t compare to the scent of your pheromones.”
Thinking back, she felt her behavior had been quite offensive. It was truly rare for the Senior to be patient enough not to hit her.
Xue Lanlan had just finished changing and was about to head downstairs when she heard Cha Yuxuan mentioning pheromones. She immediately pricked up her ears and stood at the top of the stairs to listen.
Yan Qingran suddenly became bold. “Then, do you like the smell of my pheromones?”
Although Cha Yuxuan’s expression was a bit exaggerated, the liking expressed in her emotions was genuine. “I love it! Just like people love oxygen. Besides, your pheromone scent is incredibly rare. I was thinking back then that I’d definitely have to hold you and sniff you in the future.”
What?!
Xue Lanlan was shocked. Had the two of them already reached the stage of saying such mushy, flirtatious things to each other? She hurried down the stairs, her footsteps thumping, fearing they might kiss in the next second.
Xue Lanlan forced a smile, pretending she hadn’t heard a thing. “What are you two chatting about?”
Cha Yuxuan’s face turned red, and she quickly changed the subject. “Nothing much, just waiting for you to come down.”
Xue Lanlan sighed inwardly; a daughter grown is a daughter lost. She sat down directly between the two of them and turned to look at Yan Qingran. “I haven’t asked yet, Xiao Yan, how old are you this year?”
Yan Qingran answered honestly, “I was born in March 2001. I’ve already turned twenty, nearly twenty-one.”
Xue Lanlan nodded. “Oh, so you’re two and a half years older than my Xiaoxuan.”
Cha Yuxuan muttered an interruption, “The Senior is already a junior; it’s normal for her to be two years older than me.”
Xue Lanlan glanced at her. This child was already being protective before she had even married out. Her expression remained unchanged as she continued her routine questioning, “I was just asking casually. I feel like Xiao Yan must be quite outstanding. What are your plans after graduation?”
Yan Qingran was very skilled at handling elders. “I’m in a combined bachelor’s and master’s program, so it will take six years to graduate. Currently, I plan to work in an architectural research institute or become an architectural designer.”
Xue Lanlan asked curiously, “Research work? Is your father also in research?”
Yan Qingran explained, “My father is an architectural designer who mainly works abroad. My grandfather used to be at the research institute, but he’s retired now and is an architecture professor at B University.”
Xue Lanlan searched her mind for keywords. “Oh? Is your grandfather Yan Zhao?”
Yan Qingran was slightly surprised. “Auntie, you know my grandfather?”
Xue Lanlan laughed. “Of course I don’t know him personally; I’ve just heard the old gentleman’s famous name.”
Cha Yuxuan remembered as well, finally piecing it together with an excited look. “The old gentleman who won the Pritzker Prize the year before last!”
Yan Qingran nodded. “Yes, that is indeed my grandfather.”
Cha Yuxuan patted her shoulder, enlightened. “No wonder you’re so talented; it’s in your blood!”
The two of them began chatting back and forth, even mentioning a visit to see Yan Qingran’s grandfather, leaving Xue Lanlan completely sidelined. Fortunately, Xue Jiu came out of the kitchen to join the fun, giving Xue Lanlan a chance to keep questioning Yan Qingran. “Xiao Yan is such a good person, you must have many pursuers. Have you ever had a partner?”
At those words, Cha Yuxuan immediately perked up her ears to listen, and even Xue Jiu indulged in a rare moment of gossip.
Yan Qingran pursed her lips. “I’ve never dated.”
However, she did have a formal fiancé. After today, she planned to talk to Zhuang Wei again. No matter the cost, she wanted to cancel the engagement as soon as possible.
Xue Lanlan praised her, “That’s rare. Xiao Yan, you are much better than those Alphas who can’t control their desires.”
Yan Qingran’s internal thought: I’m an Alpha too, don’t think too highly of me. If it weren’t for suppressants, I wouldn’t be able to control myself either.
Realizing she might have overgeneralized, Xue Lanlan quickly added, “I mean you’re among that small portion of strong Alphas with great self-control. Auntie thinks you’re very good.”
“Mm, thank you, Auntie.” Being praised by her future mother-in-law again made Yan Qingran feel a bit lightheaded, her gaze occasionally drifting toward Cha Yuxuan.
After the three of them chatted for a while longer, near 5:00 PM, Cha Yuxuan’s classmates and friends began to arrive one after another. There were five girls in total: Su Meng, Yun Qi, Bo Hang, Yan Na, and Quan Yinshiao.
The other two roommates from her Omega dorm made excuses and didn’t come. Jiang Xiaoping from her original dorm had to go home for a family matter. As for Quan Yinshiao, Cha Yuxuan had only mentioned it in passing and hadn’t expected her to actually show up.
The living room was suddenly full. Cha Yuxuan brought out the chilled watermelon and green grapes, Yan Qingran brought out drinks and water, and Xue Jiu gathered some game cards: Legends of the Three Kingdoms, Werewolf, Truth or Dare, and a deck of playing cards.
Xue Lanlan greeted the students and then left with her small bag. “I have a spa appointment with my best friend. I’ll be back at 9:00 PM. Have fun, everyone!” Since the younger generation was having a birthday party, she didn’t want to intrude and keep them from playing freely.
Cha Yuxuan labeled all the gifts she received and put them in a cabinet, then grabbed a small stool to join everyone in the circle. Xue Jiu brought out another basket of ice and popsicles. “We’ll go out to BBQ at 6:30 PM. It’s still a bit hot, so we can eat something and play a few rounds of games first.”
In the summer, only ice cream and cold cola could bring true happiness. He had also bought a crate of beer; as soon as the fridge had space, he moved the beer inside.
Quan Yinshiao took a glass filled with ice and poured herself some cola. “Brother, how should we address you?”
Xue Jiu cleared his throat. “My name is Xue Jiu. I’m her older brother. Born in ’98, so I’m likely older than all of you. Just call me Brother.”
Quan Yinshiao caught on. “Okay, Brother Jiu.”
Everyone followed suit, calling him “Brother Jiu” until he felt like he was at some gang gathering.
Cha Yuxuan and Yan Qingran sat quietly in a lively corner drinking mineral water. Both were on small stools, chatting inconspicuously. Bo Hang, looking like a total shipper, didn’t forget to take a few secret photos to provide “benefits” for the Cha-Yan-Yue-Se fans.
Yun Qi sat next to her and quietly nudged her, mouthing, “Cha-Yan-Yue-Se is the GOAT.” Having exchanged the secret signal, the two smiled at each other, swapped contact info, and shared a treasure trove of candid photos.
