Chapter 2: 406. I Didn’t Realize Student Shu Paid So Much Attention to Me…
“…” Jin Yan gave a strained, dry laugh. “Ha, haha, what a coincidence.”
She quickly pulled up an alarm on her bracelet and made a hasty exit. Before leaving, she poked the waist of Shu Qiong, who was trying to play dead, and said in a faux-natural tone: “A-Qiong, I have an urgent matter, so I’m leaving. You and Student Yan should get along well. Call me if anything happens.”
The disloyal Miss Jin bolted without looking back after starting the fire, leaving Shu Qiong alone to bask in the awkward air.
She endured it, thinking this couldn’t go on. Since the first day was this embarrassing, and they had four years to share, how could she bear it?
So Shu Qiong took the initiative: “Well…”
“Come in first.”
Yan Xiangyu interrupted her, leaning against the side of the door frame, leaving just enough space for one person to pass.
Shu Qiong brushed back the wisps of hair on her forehead and silently pushed her suitcase forward.
Seeing that Yan Xiangyu had no intention of backing away, Shu Qiong awkwardly squeezed past her legs.
The suitcase had accumulated some dust on the way, and a brush against Yan Xiangyu’s black pants immediately left a conspicuous dusty gray-white mark.
Shu Qiong pretended not to notice, deliberately pausing next to her, giving the suitcase another opportunity to rub against Yan Xiangyu, leaving another streak of dust.
That’s for blocking the way!
Yan Xiangyu, now the proud recipient of two streaks of dirt, finally pulled her long, restless legs back.
Shu Qiong entered the dorm room without changing her expression, finally relaxing the tension she had maintained throughout the journey.
Before she could fully exhale, her peripheral vision caught Yan Xiangyu still standing still, looking profoundly at her… waist?
Shu Qiong checked her waist. Nothing wrong there.
Except for the two forceful pokes Jin Yan gave her before leaving. She still felt a phantom ache in her side.
Just as the atmosphere solidified, Shu Qiong finally heard a saving voice: “Our last roommate is here?”
It was music to her ears!
Shu Qiong immediately perked up, looking up to see one tall and one short girl emerging from the leftmost room. The tall one had the standard build of a strong Alpha, while the shorter one was a slender Beta.
“Hello, I’m Shu Qiong.” Shu Qiong curved her eyes in a smile. “Traffic on the road made me a little late.”
The tall Alpha girl also smiled, her voice surprisingly gentle compared to her physique: “I just arrived too, and I’m still unpacking. My name is Su Heyi, and Yan Xiangyu and I are both in Mecha Solo Combat Class 1.”
She then pointed to Yan Xiangyu, who had already closed the door to 406: “This is Yan Xiangyu. She’s the top student in our specialization; I’m the second.”
Shu Qiong mentally groaned.
She should have known!
Yan Xiangyu’s grades were always excellent. The probability of them being assigned to the same dorm was extremely high!
The Beta girl behind Su Heyi wore somewhat clunky glasses. Her face was round and small, and her expression was shy: “You two are the star students of the Mecha Department. I’m from Political Science next door. Their dorms were full, so I was slotted into Room 406, Building F. You can just call me Gu Tiantian.”
She was able to get into the Alliance Military University only because her test luck was ridiculously good, allowing her to just squeeze into the Political Science Department.
After getting accepted, she thought she’d have to live on the top floor and climb eight flights of stairs every day, but she unexpectedly got a slot in a top-scoring dorm like 406 that was short a person. What incredible luck!
Su Heyi gently patted her shoulder: “Tiantian is great. She was just helping me organize my room.”
Shu Qiong finally had a chance to properly examine the interior of 406. The dorm was larger than she expected, a small four-person suite.
The small common living room was furnished with basic furniture and appliances and led to the bathroom straight ahead. Two small doors on the left and right of the living room led to the four individual rooms. The rooms were slightly small but were clean and neat.
Su Heyi came over to help her with her luggage: “The room on the far right is left for you. It gets the most sunlight.”
Shu Qiong was flattered: “Thank you.”
She quickly reached for the large suitcase in Su Heyi’s hand, signaling that she could carry it herself, but another hand was quicker than hers.
Yan Xiangyu didn’t say a word, taking the luggage from Su Heyi and walking towards Shu Qiong’s room.
Shu Qiong followed with her remaining items.
Gu Tiantian tugged at Su Heyi’s sleeve: “Heyi, let’s keep organizing your room. Those two are enough over there, and we’ll just be in the way.”
Su Heyi thought that made sense and just shouted loudly from the living room: “You two, let’s go to the cafeteria together after you finish unpacking!”
Shu Qiong quickly stepped forward to open the door for Yan Xiangyu, calling back: “Got it!”
Yan Xiangyu glanced at her and also replied: “Understood.”
She gently placed Shu Qiong’s things on the floor and saw the fine beads of sweat on her forehead: “Are you very hot?”
Of course! The temperature today is 36 degrees Celsius! How could I not be hot?
Shu Qiong grabbed a wet wipe and hastily dabbed at her sweat. Remembering Yan Xiangyu’s cleanliness habits, she asked, half-testing, half-mischievously: “Can you throw this away for me? The trash can is in the living room.”
She was cornered by her luggage against the wall and held the dirty wipe out.
Yan Xiangyu stared at her, pursing her lips.
It was that same subtle movement. Shu Qiong knew this person was not as calm as she appeared.
Was she successfully provoked!
Hoo-hoo-hoo!
Shu Qiong knew when to stop. She wasn’t one to genuinely be disrespectful. She pulled her arm back, stepped over the luggage pile, and prepared to go throw the trash away herself.
“I’ll do it.” Yan Xiangyu had already taken the wet wipe and left.
Before leaving, she closed the door behind her, leaving Shu Qiong awkwardly lifting one leg, debating whether she should step out or not.
What was that supposed to mean? What did that mumbled phrase “all she does is bully me” mean?
It makes me sound like a bully.
Right, it’s my fault for being too Alpha.
Shu Qiong comforted herself and began enthusiastically organizing her room.
The room’s furnishings were simple: a bed, a wardrobe, a set of desk and chair. The embedded temperature and humidity regulator on the ceiling worked almost silently, and the cool breeze dispelled the heat.
Shu Qiong stretched. After finishing organizing, she still had time to take a shower before dinner.
When she walked out, the bathroom door just opened. Yan Xiangyu emerged from inside, wiping the water from her hands.
Shu Qiong’s gaze floated from her face to her long, slender hands, then back to the bathroom. She pointed: “Can I go in now?”
Yan Xiangyu finally managed a slight smile: “Go in if you want to.”
Shu Qiong zipped into the bathroom and slammed the door shut on Yan Xiangyu.
Jin Yan was right; this person was definitely a B-King. Not only did she strike a cool pose everywhere, but couldn’t she just give a straight answer?
What did “Go in if you want to” mean? She just wanted to go into the bathroom, not into Yan Xiangyu’s room!
It was this kind of competitive tension. Shu Qiong clenched her fist, feeling a bit of the animosity that comes from being two female Alphas.
A faint fragrance lingered in the bathroom, probably a scent leaking from someone’s poorly packaged shower gel.
Shu Qiong sniffed. It smells kind of like green tea, and it’s quite nice. It was elegant and tasteful, slightly astringent but not overly sweet. She should ask what brand of bath product it is sometime; it has excellent taste.
Not wanting to keep her roommates waiting too long, Shu Qiong took a quick, military-style shower, just rinsing off and putting her clothes back on. She grabbed a dry towel and vigorously rubbed her hair: “Tiantian, wait five more minutes for me!”
Gu Tiantian and Su Heyi were eating fruit on the sofa. They had finished unpacking a long time ago and were waiting for Shu Qiong. They weren’t rushing her and smiled: “You shower so fast! We’re not hungry yet, no need to rush.”
Su Heyi forked a large, juicy piece of cantaloupe and offered it to Shu Qiong: “You must be tired and thirsty from carrying luggage in this heat. Have some fruit first to settle your stomach.”
Yan Xiangyu looked over.
Su Heyi quickly forked a piece of melon for her too.
Yan Xiangyu’s eyes instantly cleared. She slowly took the fork and said thanks.
Shu Qiong was touched, munching on the melon.
Her roommates were so thoughtful, they were all little angels.
But just because others weren’t rushing her didn’t mean she could take her time. Shu Qiong sped up, shaking her head like a puppy after a bath, planning to dry her hair halfway and leave.
Mid-shake, a hand pressed down on her neck. Yan Xiangyu’s voice came from above: “Don’t you have cervical spondylosis? Doesn’t your neck hurt?”
Before Shu Qiong could reply, Yan Xiangyu had already pulled a hairdryer from the cabinet. She tested the air temperature with her fingertip and motioned for Shu Qiong to sit in front of her.
Shu Qiong looked confused and suspicious, wondering if this person was up to something, but she sat down nonetheless.
She couldn’t accept a hair-drying service from her ex-girlfriend.
She sat properly on the small stool, her hands neatly placed on her knees, like an obedient and serious elementary school student.
Yan Xiangyu’s technique was decent. She tended to her hair as if she were caring for newly sprouted tender scallions.
But her hand movements were too noticeable. Shu Qiong couldn’t sit still for long. Her eyes wandered, and she saw that Yan Xiangyu’s pants, which she had dirtied, were clean again.
My ex-girlfriend is actually quite nice, returning kindness for injury.
Shu Qiong reflected, deciding she shouldn’t be too petty. It would be best if the two could let bygones be bygones and form a friendship in the future. At the very least, they should maintain surface harmony.
After all, they would see each other constantly, and it would be awkward for Su Heyi and Gu Tiantian if their relationship soured.
Then, she heard Gu Tiantian unexpectedly speak: “Did you two know each other before?”
What?
Shu Qiong was startled. The hairdryer buzzed in her ear, making one ear confused and the other clear. She thought Gu Tiantian was asking if they had “dated before.”
Fire-eyed Golden Gaze?
She looked at the intelligence shining in Gu Tiantian’s eyes behind the black-rimmed glasses and replied sternly: “Absolutely not.”
When out and about, suppressing all rumors in the cradle was the biggest form of respect one could give an ex, right?
Shu Qiong had intended to exchange a look with Yan Xiangyu to commemorate this historical moment of reconciliation with her ex and to send friendly brainwaves.
Unfortunately, the small stool was too short. She could only lower her head and look meaningfully at the tip of Yan Xiangyu’s shoe.
At the same time, she felt the hand that was gently tending to her hair (not scallions) briefly pause.
Yan Xiangyu’s voice showed no emotion: “Is that so? Weren’t you just discussing me, the B-King, with your friend an hour ago?”
“…” Why is she bringing this up now?
Shu Qiong dryly attempted to change the subject: “That was her seeing your post and talking nonsense… By the way, Student Yan, someone confessed to you on the forum. We have a celebrity in 406 right at the start of the semester, haha. As your roommate, I’m genuinely happy for you.”
Yan Xiangyu chuckled softly: “I didn’t realize Student Shu paid so much attention to me. How did I not know about a confession post about me?”
Shu Qiong suspected this person either had problems with reading comprehension or hearing. What did she mean, Shu Qiong paid attention to her? The subject was clearly Jin Yan!
“It’s pinned on the forum’s front page. It’s marked in red, so you can’t miss it,” she explained tiredly.
“Oh! Is it the one with the photos? It’s still on the front page,” Su Heyi said in surprise. “The OP who took these two shots has great angles.”
“Let me see.” Yan Xiangyu glanced at it from afar, then lost interest and withdrew her gaze.
Su Heyi scrolled through the forum with interest, then was drawn to a different thread.
“I heard Shu Ci’s daughter, Shu Qiong, is also in the Mecha Department? Has anyone seen her in person? Offering milk tea for a photo!”
3L: “It’s not right to post people’s photos willy-nilly”
6L: “It’s fine. We’re all in the same school anyway, so we’ll run into her eventually. She’s not some top-secret figure.”
11L: “Is this a rumor or true? Has anyone seen her in person?”
65L: “I heard she looks a lot like Mrs. Shu Ci, but she’s not an Omega. She’s a female Alpha in Mecha Engineer Class 1.”
66L: “Report back with more info!”
67L: “Haven’t seen her in person, only the ID photo in the file. She’s a refined and elegant Alpha.”
68L: “The one above isn’t a teacher, right? [Alarmed]”
71L: “Refined and elegant female Alpha. Anyone who gets her has good taste [Leering]”
73L: “I wonder if she can inherit her mother’s talent. But a genius like Ms. Shu should be rare… What a pity she died young.”
74L: “Dying young is one sigh, marrying young is another!”
91L: “Family, wait for my news! I’m also in Mecha Engineer Class 1. I’m going to find Shu Qiong herself tomorrow to ask for her contact information. Wish me luck!”
99L: “Waiting”
100L: “Waiting +1”
This thread attracted a crowd. Su Heyi finished reading and only felt that her future campus life would not be peaceful.
She closed the forum and looked at the protagonist of the heated discussion.
The humming of the hairdryer had stopped. Yan Xiangyu casually handed the comb to Shu Qiong. Shu Qiong naturally took it and bent her knee to push the small stool towards Yan Xiangyu.
Yan Xiangyu nodded, bent down, and put the stool back in its original position.
Su Heyi exclaimed: “Roommates should help each other like this.”
Gu Tiantian pushed up her glasses and said nothing, the light reflecting off the lenses, making her eyes look sharp and knowing.
