- What Should I Do After Picking Up the "Dragon Proud Sky" Protagonist as a Pet? (Transmigration)
- Chapter 11 - Starfall Adventure Group
Blackthorn City was a medium-sized town situated on the fringes of the Ghent Kingdom. Since the City Lord, the Marquis, was away traveling, the management of affairs fell to his eldest son.
Vina was Su Feng’s younger sister, born to Lady Tracy. Su Feng, however, had never seen his own mother. His birth mother’s identity seemed to be a taboo in Blackthorn City. Once, when Su Feng asked the butler about her, the usually composed old man showed a rare expression of gravity. With a complex gaze, he told Su Feng, “Young Master, I am afraid I cannot tell you.”
Su Feng looked at him in confusion. As he turned around, he found his father, the elusive Marquis, standing behind him at some unknown point, watching him with an indescribable look in his eyes.
“Missing your mother?” Marquis Cecilia’s tone was peculiar, possessed of a strange cadence. Every word he spoke seemed to carry an ethereal echo. He stood there, using a small knife to slowly carve into a strangely shaped pastry. The silver blade gleamed, held by slender fingers. As it sliced briskly through the food, a thick, blood-like liquid oozed from the edges.
This tall, thin man, who looked as decadent and sinister as an ancient aristocrat from a mural, looked down at his child and said, “Although you have never met your mother, I can fulfill your wish. I can take you to see her.”
The man was exceptionally tall, large-framed, and strikingly beautiful, yet he appeared unnaturally eerie. “Your mother left right after giving birth to you,” he said with an ambiguous smile, staring into Su Feng’s eyes. “Your eyes were inherited from her side of the family.”
The air was heavy and silent. Under this oppressive pressure, Su Feng glanced at the butler. The old man didn’t speak, but with a stiff face, he gave an almost imperceptible shake of his head.
Su Feng followed suit and shook his head.
“A pity,” Cecilia said, tossing a piece of the pastry into his mouth and chewing. For some reason, Su Feng thought he heard a faint, distant scream, but it felt like a mere hallucination.
The Marquis’s figure vanished at the end of the corridor. Even though he was rarely in Blackthorn City and seldom spoke to Su Feng, the few encounters they had always left Su Feng with a lingering sense of danger.
But he was indeed Su Feng’s father.
Su Feng’s parents in the modern world were kind and gentle. His younger siblings, though a bit mischievous, were his true kin. But since coming to this world, the biological father he encountered was so bizarre it made his heart race with fear. This was the difference between two worlds. No matter how much he missed his modern family, he had to accept his life here.
Thus, with Cecilia away, Su Feng had to rely on his own abilities to resolve the threat posed by Crane. Fortunately, he had successfully handled the problem and destroyed the Spirit-Seizing Secret Manual. Unfortunately, Su Feng had just suddenly remembered a very serious matter.
That matter was: Crane, as a Soul-Contracting Dark Mage in possession of the Spirit-Seizing Secret Manual, had a mentor who doted on him but with whom he had parted ways. The reason Crane had been so agitated upon meeting Murphy was that he realized Murphy was a rare genius perfectly suited for the Spirit-Seizing Secret Manual. By seizing that body, he could have proven his capabilities to his mentor.
This was why Crane had been so hysterical and unwilling when he was counter-killed by the protagonist.
I clearly have backing! I am the disciple of a grand Spirit-Opening Realm Dark Mage! I only lost because I had a falling out with my mentor and could not call for help in time!
I am not reconciled!
Crane’s final words in the original novel were typical of a minor cannon fodder character with connections who gets killed by a hot-headed protagonist. He had shouted, “My mentor will not let you off!”
Thinking of this, Su Feng’s cheek twitched and his heart pounded.
A powerhouse of the Spirit-Opening Realm could already open the gates to the Spirit Realm and possessed the power to travel between the two worlds. They could cross the constraints of space in an instant using different coordinates to travel across the continent. To many, the Spirit-Opening Realm was the true definition of a one-man army. Even if a small nation had only one such powerhouse, that single person could suppress everything.
Below the Spirit-Opening Realm, all were as ants. If you cannot even open the Spirit Realm gate, how can you hope to kill an enemy hiding within the Spirit Realm?
Su, Little Weakling Sword Master, Feng silently looked at the Dragon Aotian protagonist beside him, his eyes suddenly filled with hope and longing.
Murphy was still thinking about the Spirit-Seizing Secret Manual. Seeing the noble young master suddenly looking at him with such a gaze, Murphy paused his steps. He said, “You seem to have something to say.”
You are the center of this world, the Child of Destiny, Su Feng thought.
So when you encounter trouble and danger, your luck should always find a way to shield you and avoid fatal peril, right? Right?
Su Feng spoke slowly, “I ask you, if you knew that the enemy you just killed had a powerful mentor, what would you do?”
Murphy was silent for a moment, seemingly sensing something. “Since the person is already dead, we must hide our tracks, cover up the facts, and find a way to keep it a secret while staying alert for any enemies that might appear. By the way, what rank is his mentor?”
Su Feng said, “Possibly, the Spirit-Opening Realm.”
Murphy came to a dead stop. He stood there as a light breeze swept past. The surroundings were dead silent. After a moment, Murphy said, “If we have not been discovered yet, then we just need to make all necessary preparations and then run for our lives.”
Su Feng repeated, “Run for our lives.”
Murphy’s eyes flickered. He looked up at the dark curtain of the sky, his words plain but carrying the primal instinct of someone facing a disaster. “Bolting away. The faster the better, the swifter the better.”
The Dragon Aotian response was truly moving in its purity. Murphy took a deep breath, seemingly trying to suppress something. “So now, can you tell me one thing: Is Crane’s mentor really a Spirit-Opening Realm…”
“Hahaha, you misheard,” Su Feng said, laughing it off. “I was just asking randomly. Let us head back to Blackthorn City first.”
“Su Feng,” Murphy followed behind him. “When I was in the Mage Tower, I did know Crane had a mentor, but how did you know about this?”
Su Feng’s expression remained unchanged. Even though his heart was screaming that the sky was falling, he maintained a calm front. With an air of confidence, he said, “Do you think Soul-Contracting Dark Magic is like a common cabbage you can pick up on the road? He must have a lineage. But it is probably just a Law Saint or a Law Sovereign. He came to this run-down little city to live in seclusion, likely because he had a falling out with his mentor. Do not worry about it.”
After hearing this, a slight smile appeared on Murphy’s face, but his eyes said: Do you take me for an idiot?
Murphy asked, “Is it really just a Law Saint?”
Of course not! When that Spirit-Opening Dark Mage arrives, it will scare the life out of you.
Su Feng smiled slightly. “You do not want to run away, do you?”
Murphy replied, “How could I? How could I possibly leave you and flee alone?”
Su Feng said, “That is good. After all, we have the Master-Servant Contract and the Life Covenant between us. If something were to happen to me suddenly, it would affect you too. What would we do then?”
Murphy said, “We can leave together.”
Su Feng was speechless. “You mean, the two of us eloping together?”
Murphy stared back at him. After a moment, Su Feng gave him a light kick on the shin. “Stop talking nonsense. Besides, a Spirit-Opening Realm powerhouse can cross a thousand miles in a single step. What is the use of running?”
“So,” Murphy’s tone turned cold. He whispered, “That guy Crane really does have a Spirit-Opening Realm mentor?”
“Is he already on his way?” Murphy’s tone grew more urgent. “Was Crane using the crystal ball to contact his mentor back then?”
Sometimes, knowing nothing is happier than knowing the truth. But Dragon Aotian was a protagonist for a reason. Murphy’s eyes flickered for only a moment before he regained his composure. Though it was unclear what he was thinking, his mental fortitude was indeed impressive.
Su Feng was panicking internally. He could not find a solution through Murphy, but he could look elsewhere. Running away sounded correct, but that was for a lone wolf. Not to mention whether Su Feng could abandon everything, it was a question of how far they could actually get when being hunted by a Spirit-Opening powerhouse.
Let you run three thousand kilometers first, then tear through space, step out from the Spirit Realm, and slap you to death. Sounds reasonable, does it not?
Su Feng looked at the frowning protagonist. Seeing his look of desperate thinking, Su Feng shook his head, feeling that the protagonist was being too timid and unsteady.
Then, he opened the system.
“System, hurry and think of a way to save me! Use Deduction to find a way to escape!”
“Don’t be nervous, I will help you,” the system soothed him. “Don’t be afraid.”
“So, Crane really has a Spirit-Opening mentor, and he really knows my location and is on his way?” Su Feng had only been guessing, but realizing it was true made his vision go dark. The system had not expected him to be testing it at a time like this. It said: “This was part of the original plot. Why are you only just now remembering to be afraid?”
“But in the original story, Crane did not contact his mentor. Why did he do it this time? Have they not already split?” Su Feng said, then suddenly swore. “Could it be because I barged directly into his Mage Tower?” The man’s eyes flickered. “And, uh, I scared him?”
What a coward.
The system chuckled. It said: “You may use the system functions as you wish, but the Intimacy Points required for each Deduction will change. Intimacy points required for this Deduction: 1000.”
Su Feng said, “One thousand.”
He opened the panel. The Intimacy bar was a faint green. Even though they were inseparable, the passive absorption of points was far slower than through close physical contact. Su Feng currently only had 200 Intimacy points.
Was the system taking advantage of his desperation to extort him?
Su Feng hesitated for a second. He turned around and slowly looked at his only supplier. Su Feng suddenly said, “There seems to be something behind you.”
The deep-in-thought Murphy subconsciously turned his head. He felt a pain in his neck, his vision went black, and—thud—the man collapsed. Su Feng did not have time for anything else. He caught the man and kissed him forcefully. There was no one around. No one knew that the eldest young master of Blackthorn City was holding his personal manservant and kissing him. Due to the height difference and the awkward environment, Su Feng could only pin him against the wall and stand on his tiptoes to kiss him.
Murphy’s body was heavy. Su Feng kissed him for quite a while, and only after restocking did he let go. Checking again, the Intimacy bar had slowly filled up. Su Feng set the man aside for the moment and pressed the Deduction button.
The system’s voice rang out: “Due to your concern about Crane’s mentor hunting you down soon, and to avoid heavy casualties in Blackthorn City, you have proactively chosen Deduction.
-
- Seek help from Cecilia (1% success)
-
- Seek help from the Butler (80% success)
-
- Escape Blackthorn City with Murphy to avoid the pursuit of Dark Mage Lanna (50% success)”
Su Feng stared at the screen with burning eyes. He had finally found a solution. His effort—even kissing his lips until they were swollen—had not been in vain. Behind him, Murphy slowly sat up, clutching his aching neck. The man’s lips were slightly swollen, still retaining a residual warmth and a faint, fresh fragrance.
That was the scent of the noble young master.
Murphy’s gaze was complex. He let out a soft breath and subconsciously licked his lips. He looked at Su Feng and asked, “What just happened?”
“A contracted spirit attacked you from behind. It was very dangerous, but I have already dealt with it,” Su Feng said without looking back. “Yeah, you are too weak, that is all. Remember to exercise more and practice your cultivation when we get back to Blackthorn City.”
What spirit attack? Does this guy even bother to make his lies believable?
Murphy gave a light chuckle but could not truly find it in him to be angry. He did not know what the young master was up to. Su Feng did not explain. He hurriedly led Murphy back to Blackthorn City. He did not have time to share the good news or celebrate. He avoided everyone else and went straight to find the person handling the household affairs, the Butler.
There was no other way! The other options were too ridiculous. Seeing this, the system said: “Upon finding the Butler, he happens to be prepared to report some news to you: The Starfall Adventure Group from the Guild has accepted your commission. Their leader, Suqian, admires you greatly. He had originally decided to deal with the threat posed by Crane for you, but upon learning Crane is already dead, he is preparing to leave Blackthorn City tonight.”
Admires greatly?
Su Feng was stunned. The system’s words sounded a bit odd, but he did not have time to overthink it. The Butler was slightly startled by Su Feng’s hurried appearance. He said, “Young Master, you have come at the perfect time. The Starfall Adventure Group has accepted your commission, and their leader wishes to meet you.”
Normally, Su Feng might have refused. Adventure groups were a bunch of mercenaries who lived on the edge of a blade. They were best at squeezing profits from nobles and making unreasonable demands. If he encountered a mild-mannered group it would be fine, but Su Feng detested those who were difficult to deal with.
However, the leader of this group seemed to admire him, and it seemed they were planning to leave immediately after solving the Crane issue?
Curiosity arose in Su Feng. He said without hesitation, “Then let us go meet them.”
Murphy followed behind Su Feng. Everything seemed normal, but Su Feng appeared very rushed, his pace quick. He was also touching his lips, reflecting on everything that had happened. He vaguely felt that Su Feng’s behavior had some sort of indescribable purpose.
It was as if he were in a hurry to solve a specific problem.
But if it were really as he said, why did he not seek help from his father and instead come straight here?
Inside a noisy tavern, several members of the adventure group were gathered. The man at the center was draped in a long robe with a hood pulled low, tightly concealing his face as if he were afraid of something.
He only revealed a glimpse of a handsome chin. His scarred hand held a cup, which he drained in one gulp. A shock of red hair, as bright as blood, peeked out, and from beneath the robe, a section of a ponytail was wrapped around his calf.
That fiery red tail was tightly coiled around his leg. The man seemed somewhat uneasy and very much on guard.
“Captain,” the surrounding members said with loud laughs, not noticing the tail. “Why did you not tell us you were going to travel so far just to take on a mission like this?”
“The client is only a Law Sovereign,” a member said, finding it hard to believe. “How exactly did he offend you?”
“Silence.” The voice under the hood was raspy and steady, the voice of a mature man. The members did not dare speak further. The leader’s ponytail slowly uncoiled. He sensed a black-haired noble approaching their direction. The members saw it too. When Su Feng, wearing a black cloak and possessing cobalt-blue eyes, walked up to them, the members caught sight of those eyes under the light and were suddenly stunned.
“This,” one member said. “I think I know the reason now.”
The leader lowered his head and glanced at him. The member shrank back, not daring to speak. Su Feng did not know what was behind the strange atmosphere or where they had come from. He simply walked up to the leader, took a deep breath, gave a brilliant smile, and said:
“You are the leader of the Starfall Adventure Group?” Su Feng’s skin was fair, and he was handsome. His cobalt eyes sparkled. He looked flamboyant, confident, and dazzling. The leader stared at him fixedly, then nodded.
Su Feng said, “That is good. I have a request and a commission.”
Before he could finish, the leader said directly, “I accept.”
“Huh? What?” Su Feng was stunned. He asked suspiciously, “But I have not even…”
“I accept.”
The leader nodded. “Your request, I accept.”
Su Feng: “No matter what the commission is?”
“Yes.”
Su Feng narrowed his eyes, staring suspiciously at the person in front of him. The surrounding members were too afraid to speak. The scene was exceptionally bizarre. Under such pressure, the leader slowly turned around and continued drinking his wine. Behind him, the fire-like ponytail flicked once, then twice, like a light cloud of flame.
