What Should I do After Binding the Wrong System and the Female Lead comes Knocking at my Door? - Chapter 8
Early in the morning, Pei Yuanxi was woken up by a call from her older sister.
Pei Yuanxi yawned sleepily and answered, “Hello, sis…”
“Where did you go last night?”
Pei Yuanxi rolled her eyes. How dare she ask? But since her sister was hiding things from her, she decided to play along and act like she didn’t know. Let’s see how long she could keep up this act.
“I went to hang out with Gu Qing after she called me last night.”
Was she supposed to tell her sister that Gu Qing’s image had suddenly appeared in her mind while she was listening to something?
There was a pause on the other end of the line. “You… stayed over at her place last night?”
“Huh…?” Pei Yuanxi froze for a moment, then laughed into the phone, “No, sis, where did you get that idea? I just went out to stroll with her for a bit and then went home to sleep.”
“Alright.” Pei Muchan let out a sigh of relief. It wasn’t that she wanted to control Pei Yuanxi, but her younger sister had known Gu Qing for such a short time, and with all sorts of factors involved, she was worried that if Pei Yuanxi developed feelings for her before she really understood Gu Qing, she might get hurt in the future.
As for casual hookups without emotional involvement, ever since Pei Yuanxi had told her that she liked girls, Pei Muchan had been teaching her that no matter whether you like a man or a woman, you must treat that affection seriously. It was also about being responsible for yourself.
If you truly like someone, don’t engage in a physical relationship unless you’ve had conversations about your future together. If the relationship begins casually, it will likely end just as casually, and once intimacy happens, the spiritual connection may no longer resonate.
If you were to compare getting to know someone to reading a book, don’t just flip a few pages and think you understand it—read it through to know its merits and flaws, and only then will you know whether it’s worth liking.
Pei Yuanxi had done well in this regard, but as for herself…
Pei Muchan snapped out of her thoughts and continued, “I had someone look into that company.”
Pei Yuanxi’s attention was immediately piqued. “How did you investigate? Oh wait, what company?”
“Stop pretending.” Pei Muchan chuckled helplessly, “I had some people check the accounts of that company. It turns out there’s been tax evasion, and the legal representative has already been taken in for questioning. Unfortunately, the legal representative isn’t the real owner. The actual owner has some connections and somehow found out that the person behind all of this is Mu Xi. First thing this morning, someone from their company came to beg me for mercy. I told him I didn’t know the situation, so I told him to go find you at your studio.”
Pei Yuanxi laughed mischievously, “I knew that company run by a scumbag boss wasn’t going to be a good thing. Thanks, my dear sister. Muah.”
“Alright, so what are you going to do?”
“What else can I do? Just give me my money back,” Pei Yuanxi replied lazily, lying back on her bed and admiring her nails. “Then send him off to be investigated. I don’t trust this kind of person not to be involved in other shady stuff.”
Since Gu Qing had already dissolved the contract, the company would likely go bankrupt soon.
Pei Muchan chuckled softly. “Good, as long as you’ve got it under control.”
She then gave some serious advice. “Take care of yourself when you’re out there. Now that you’re a best actress, you don’t have to be so harsh on your figure anymore. Eat more good food. And also… think carefully about what you really want from your little girlfriend. Only then will you be able to move forward clearly. I don’t want to hear some sob story from you in the future, got it?”
“Ah, teacher, don’t nag. Pei Muchan, you’re so annoying,” Pei Yuanxi replied with a mock sigh, “Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. Our Pei family doesn’t have anyone with love-brain syndrome.”
Pei Muchan paused when she heard this, doubting her sister’s words. After all, Pei Yuanxi had never been in a relationship before, so it was normal that she didn’t understand the power of love. And from what Pei Muchan knew about her, Pei Yuanxi wasn’t exactly immune to love either.
She could only hope Gu Qing would treat her sister well.
But after thinking it over, Pei Muchan realized that the two of them were quite compatible. In Pei Muchan’s view, Gu Qing was a bit of an abstract character—she had bypassed an easier route to Pei Yuanxi’s studio, opting to sign an agreement first before selling herself out. Was she really just attracted to Pei Yuanxi on the spot?
One was an abstract oddball, the other a clueless rich kid. Strange, but they seemed to fit together.
Pei Yuanxi, unaware that her sister thought of her as a “clueless rich kid,” picked up her phone after the call ended and saw a message from Bai Zhou.
Bai Zhou: “Yuanxi, someone’s here to see you at the studio.”
Pei Yuanxi: “Tell them to wait.”
After sending the message, Pei Yuanxi tossed her phone aside and snuggled into her blanket. She sighed contentedly and decided to get some more sleep before dealing with anything.
On the other side, Lin Zhen wasn’t as comfortable. He paced around the waiting area, glancing at the time from time to time.
Just the day before, someone had come to his company right before closing hours, claiming that someone had reported tax evasion, and they were taking all the accounts for investigation.
At that moment, Lin Zhen immediately realized something was off. He stayed up all night trying to find connections and figure out who he had offended. When he found out that the person behind it was someone with ties to Mu Xi, he was stunned. His small company had no business crossing paths with such a powerful entity.
Sure enough, by early the next morning, the company’s legal representative was called in for questioning. At that point, Lin Zhen couldn’t sit still anymore. He hurried to find Pei Muchan, hoping for some answers. He had already braced himself for a cold reception, but to his surprise, he was able to meet her quite easily.
However, Pei Muchan told him to go find her younger sister, Pei Yuanxi.
He wasn’t very familiar with the entertainment industry, and it was only recently that he had heard of Pei Yuanxi’s win as Best Actress. He thought that if the older sister was so reasonable, then the younger sister must be similar. It turned out he had been wrong.
He arrived around 10 AM, and now it was already 4 PM. The much-anticipated Pei Yuanxi had finally arrived.
Seeing her in such high spirits, Lin Zhen realized what was happening. He understood that she was deliberately dragging this out, but he couldn’t say anything.
He had learned through the grapevine just how adored Pei Yuanxi was—not only in the entertainment world but also within business circles. If he dared to show her any attitude, he’d be bankrupt by the end of the day, and on the news for all to see.
So, when Pei Yuanxi asked, “I’m not late, am I?” he could only force a smile and say, “Not at all, not at all. I’m so sorry for taking up your time.”
Pei Yuanxi gave a playful laugh and gestured for him to speak. “Since I’m here, no need for small talk. I’ll tell you one thing: five million. It’s mine.”
Lin Zhen was stunned. What five million? His mind couldn’t wrap around when he had ever borrowed five million from Pei Yuanxi.
Pei Yuanxi gave him a once over and shook her head. “Look at you. You’re a small-time boss with a fat face, yet you still try to play the ‘unspoken rules’ game. You really think you can handle that?”
Lin Zhen’s eyes widened in surprise. Was she insulting him?
But at this point, he understood. The five million was related to Gu Qing.
Pei Yuanxi must have been taking out her frustration on him for Gu Qing, and now Lin Zhen understood why this was happening. After hearing rumors earlier about Pei Yuanxi being attracted to women, he thought he had figured it all out.
He cursed Gu Qing under his breath. Why didn’t she tell him sooner about the connections she had? If their relationship had soured, why bring him into this?
He almost wanted to ask Pei Yuanxi, “Am I just part of your little game?”
But he didn’t dare. Now, he was like the mindless villain in a short drama, about to be slaughtered by the protagonist.
After figuring it out, Lin Zhen didn’t waste time. He immediately promised, “Don’t worry, Miss Pei. I’ll have my financial department return your five million right away. I’ll also offer some private compensation. I hope you’ll accept it.”
Pei Yuanxi glanced at him and said, “No need. Just give me what’s mine. Keep your own money there’s still a use for it.”
“Yes, yes, Miss Pei, you’re busy. I’ll leave now,” Lin Zhen said, nodding and bowing.
