- Chapter 36 - Madness of Love
“This way. Yes, straight to the back.”
Threatened not to make a sound or any strange movements, I was brought to an unfamiliar room at the farthest corner of the official residence.
Was it a storage room?
Judging by the thick layer of dust covering the haphazardly stacked items, this seemed to be a room where even opening the door was a rare occurrence.
I brushed the dust from my fingers onto my palm and spoke in the calmest voice possible to avoid provoking my kidnapper.
“What is the meaning of this, Ilina?”
After closing the heavy storage room door, Julian’s maid slowly turned to face me. The blade gleaming with an eerie light in the now lightless room looked like the fangs of some evil beast.
“Hey, Ilina?”
No matter how many times I called, Ilina gave no response. With eyes as hollow as if the knife had stolen their light, she took a step forward. I retreated an equal distance and said,
“Calm down, Ilina. Is this Lord Arcadia’s order?”
“Lord Arcadia’s order…?”
That name alone seemed to reach her. Finally, the knife-wielding maid spoke.
“Yes… that might be it. Al told me all sorts of things.”
“Ilina?”
“Things like how the mistress and master are getting along, what the mistress likes, what she dislikes, the location of her bedroom, how to knock on her door, her hobbies—mistress mistress mistress mistress, why is it always about the mistress!”
She struck a pile of goods with the knife’s hilt. Dust swirled up into the dim space.
“Al used to tell me things! That I’m cute, that I’m pretty, that I’m wonderful. But ever since the mistress returned, it’s always about her! Hey, why? Why does it have to be the mistress?”
“Calm down. Lord Arcadia has no interest in me. Lord Arcadia is just—”
“Al only ever smiles when he’s with me.”
“Huh?”
“Al smiles the entire time he’s with me. He never gets angry like he does with the mistress, never laughs, never sulks. I don’t know that Al from last night!”
“Ilina…”
That’s right, it was Ilina who led me to Arcadia last night.
‘…Take your time.’
There’s no way Ilina would have just left after closing the door like that. There’s no way she could have just walked away after leaving a man and woman she loved alone together in a locked room at night.
“Ilina… you…”
She must have been listening the whole time. On the other side of the door, listening to our conversation the entire time.
How must she have felt? How miserable she must have been.
To be forced to listen to the man she loves sweet-talking another woman.
“Why? After just one night of conversation. The mistress already has such a wonderful husband. Why does everyone choose the mistress? Why does the mistress take everything from me!”
“…Everything?”
Amy had mentioned it. That Ilina had recently gone through a heartbreak. Could it be that the person Ilina loved was…
“I… don’t know what to say. Just give me the knife. There’s still time to fix this.”
“Don’t touch it!”
The knife swept toward my outstretched hand. I pulled back just in time, but the swing was forceful enough that it wouldn’t have mattered if it had taken my fingers.
“It’s already too late for that. A maid who kidnapped her mistress is finished.”
Ilina readjusted her grip on the knife and took another step forward. I tried to retreat too, but my foot caught on some stored item.
“Mistress, please die with me.”
“…Ilina”
“Who told you to do such a thing?”
