Wanxi Rebirth - Chapter 82
Yue Tingxi had long suspected the attitude and stance of the Salvation Scales and the World Consciousness, and now, after hearing Xie Zhi’s words, some of her guesses were confirmed.
The World Consciousness had long been corrupted by countless negative feedback accumulated over endless ages. The worst part was that, although it existed like a non-human law of heaven, it still possessed the emotions and desires of humans and demons.
Otherwise, why would it incarnate as an ordinary little girl out of loneliness? Why would it, out of disappointment and expectation, deliberately stir chaos just to test how the two races would respond?
From the results, the test had left the World Consciousness utterly disappointed. For thousands of years since, it had steadfastly stayed in its original position, silently resisting and bearing everything, protecting this world.
Neither it nor its followers trusted anyone, and even now, they only pinned their hopes on the “piece” that had been purified by it and placed in the environment it most preferred.
Not hearing Xie Zhi deny this, Yue Tingxi’s gaze turned cold, even though she didn’t know the exact details.
“You mock the intruder as a ‘lone dog,’ but do you even know whether the chessmaster can also be called a ‘gambling dog’ acting on their own?” she said mockingly. “When the World Consciousness could no longer support itself, it picked someone it found ‘acceptable’ and gradually lured her to that high position? And what about those cultivators who strived to ease relations and maintain peace between the two races—what were they to you?!”
“In our view, the path ahead is already a dead end—after all, the enemy’s strength is unknown, and information is kept from you. You have to fight your way through before gaining the right to know. Considering the possibility that the enemy might be far stronger than we realize, we think this might be a way of protecting you, so we try every method to improve strength, cultivate diligently, and prepare for the eventual ‘counterattack.’”
“But now you tell me that the World Consciousness once committed an enormous crime, yet it had its reasons. But even if we want to understand or assist it, with our current abilities, we can do nothing. So we must continue to follow your guidance and arrangements, acting as your chess pieces along this foggy, perilous road…”
“Do you not feel, while saying this, that you are glorifying and masking its evil?” Having laid everything out, Yue Tingxi continued, “In my previous life, the intruder used system tools to turn me into a ‘puppet.’ I see your current methods are no different!”
Ultimately, the so-called “assistance” of the World Consciousness and the Salvation Scales is just part of a trial and a gamble!
Xie Zhi listened quietly. When Yue Tingxi finished speaking, she smiled faintly, covering her mouth.
“You’ve already learned enough truth, yet you have no clue how to break the stalemate, right?” she softly asked. “Then continue along the path we’ve ‘guided’ you on and see what lies at the end of this dead end. Is it a throne that must be occupied, or the scenery you yourself hope to see?”
With that, she waved her sleeve and expelled Yue Tingxi’s spiritual awareness from the Mustard Seed Ice Wheel.
Yue Tingxi had already vented most of her frustration verbally, yet the attitude of the Salvation Scales left her with a feeling of punching cotton—completely ineffective.
Upon realizing she had been expelled, her temper flared immediately.
Since Qin Suoliu was still asleep, resting her spirit, there was no one to vent to. Yue Tingxi grabbed the Mustard Seed Ice Wheel, instantly teleported outside, and struck down a horde of corpse-ghosts.
Ling Fengqing and Luo Yansha, who were monitoring the outside, were startled.
“Why did Tingxi suddenly go outside?” Luo Yansha asked, still shaken. “Wasn’t she supposed to be in the resting chamber with Miss?”
“Perhaps a special situation arose, so she went to confirm?” Ling Fengqing guessed, observing Yue Tingxi’s fierce fighting posture. “Look, the flesh of those corpses is becoming increasingly lifelike and harder to immobilize.”
But no matter what, Ling Fengqing felt Yue Tingxi shouldn’t be outside and quickly used telepathy to call her back.
Yue Tingxi knew she should conserve her strength, but she was too angry to resist venting.
Once called by Ling Fengqing, she suddenly remembered that Qin Suoliu was still alone in the resting chamber.
Before the lady had fainted, they had established a soul pact called the “Wedge of Separation” and said certain words. If she woke up and didn’t see Yue Tingxi…
She didn’t think further and instead grabbed some corpse blood and increasingly resilient flesh, teleported onto the flying ship, handed them to Ling Fengqing for urgent research, performed a purification curse on herself, and then returned to the resting chamber.
——Yet the sight she dreaded most had still occurred.
Qin Suoliu had somehow woken and was sitting up, staring blankly at a certain spot, her hand clenched on where Yue Tingxi had previously sat.
Yue Tingxi immediately hurried over, embraced her from behind, and wrapped her legs, now serpentine, around her.
“I didn’t leave! I just… heard some damnable words and got so angry I could explode,” she explained honestly, rubbing against Qin Suoliu’s shoulder. “You need to rest. I went out and struck the corpse-ghost army again…”
“Who made you angry?” Qin Suoliu asked softly, her spirit still weak, but her voice gentle. “The intruder?”
Everyone on the flying ship was an ally. Even Bi Fang, who had previously disliked Yue Tingxi, now understood her temper and would not provoke her. Even the impetuous Sixth Elder of the Star-Gazing Pavilion, Liu Shuanghan, was closely monitored by five other elders. Clearly, no one else had offended her.
It could only have been the intruder captured by Xie Zhi in the Mustard Seed Ice Wheel. Yue Tingxi might have asked him something or seen something from his memories.
“Ha, whatever he said wouldn’t surprise me!” Yue Tingxi sighed, taking out the Mustard Seed Ice Wheel. She had wanted to toss it onto the bedside, but considering it was originally a gift from her to the Green Jade Mountain, she placed it beside Qin Suoliu instead. She clicked her tongue and muttered, “Nothing chills a demon’s heart more than betrayal from someone you trust!”
In reality, the situation wasn’t as dire as she described, but since they were still technically allies with Xie Zhi and the World Consciousness, and had been protected by the World Consciousness over countless unknown years, Yue Tingxi couldn’t despise them like she did the intruder or the Transmigration Bureau.
Qin Suoliu’s spirit still needed rest. While Yue Tingxi nurtured her spirit, she recounted more truths she had learned from Xie Zhi.
At first, Qin Suoliu was shocked, then frowned deeply, but gradually, she developed a strange suspicion.
Especially when Yue Tingxi emphasized, “That guy just keeps laughing! For something so serious, what’s so funny!”
Qin Suoliu didn’t dare claim she fully understood Xie Zhi. She only knew that this artifact had worked closely with the meticulous Green Jade Mountain for a long time. Its nature must have something in common with her, otherwise Lin Fengqing would have long warned them away from Xie Zhi.
——She felt that Xie Zhi’s laughter was a subtle signal of “it should be this way,” yet the artifact revealed the World Consciousness and its crimes completely. Anyone disgusted by these matters would naturally be angered and see them as adversaries. Once cooperation broke, they would find a way to eliminate them, i.e., “killing a god.”
This made her wonder whether Xie Zhi did it deliberately.
After all, only when hatred is fully fueled can one strike without hesitation.
If that were true, neither Xie Zhi nor the World Consciousness likely wanted to continue living. Even after resolving the threat of the Transmigration Bureau, Yue Tingxi, unwilling to become the new World Consciousness, might not be forced to take its place.
But she had no concrete evidence and merely noted the suspicion, echoing Yue Tingxi’s criticisms of Xie Zhi and “judging” the World Consciousness alongside her, occasionally glancing at the inactive Mustard Seed Ice Wheel.
Yue Tingxi, still truly angry, didn’t notice these glances. She cursed and simultaneously transmitted much of her spiritual power, enough to restore Qin Suoliu to full strength before entering the Ghost City’s “Withered Bones Blooming.”
“I even wasted the remaining Soul Purification Pills!” Yue Tingxi lamented, “Soul purification herbs are so rare…”
Qin Suoliu patted her back, touched her serpentine tail, and said, “Consider it a reassurance pill. Think positively—they’ve already built a thick enough barrier around your spirit. No bad thing can corrupt you now.”
Yue Tingxi pouted and cuddled her, like a clingy dog.
After their complaints about Xie Zhi and the World Consciousness were done, they stayed quietly for a while before the ship suddenly jolted, as if hitting a barrier with extreme resistance.
“Looks like we’ve arrived.” Qin Suoliu stood, changing into a crimson battle robe that would not be tainted by corpse poison. She stored her primary weapon in an easily accessible location, held Yue Tingxi’s hand, and together they left the resting chamber.
In the main cabin, Lin Fengqing had already extracted the divine herbs called “Few Cold Crisp Flowers.” With Qin Yingguang and two elders of the Star-Gazing Pavilion’s assistance, they further converted them into pure spiritual energy, injecting it into the ship’s spirit cannon.
The icy blue, holy light rippled like waves, sending a cool sensation that invigorated all humans and demons who sensed it.
“According to multiple records, aside from breaking the Ghost City’s ‘Withered Bones Blooming’ barrier, ‘Few Cold Crisp Flowers’ can suppress the reanimation of corpses for a period of time,” the Fifth Elder of the Star-Gazing Pavilion said. “Just now, Yingguang Little Friend used mysterious powers related to the World Consciousness to enhance this effect, likely extending its effective range.”
Qin Suoliu instinctively glanced at her little sister, who shook her head. “I’m fine! My spiritual energy is enough for two more uses!”
“Conversion complete! But energy storage and firing still require some time. Previously, our spiritual energy was slightly insufficient!” Lin Fengqing reported while filling the crystal slots with spiritual stones. “Currently, scanning shows a large number of non-humanoid giant corpses approaching the ship, as well as winged monsters! The outside is up to you!”
