- Chapter 20 - Finally Divorced
Ye Yichi’s fingertips trembled as she gripped the blanket.
It wasn’t out of sentiment, she told herself it was surely because she had been in the rain for too long and was shivering from the cold.
“Come back to Huawan with me. I’ll find the bank card and return it to you.”
The protagonist was truly a person of “truth, goodness, and beauty” worrying she might starve, pitying her enough to offer resources, letting her swipe the card at will… As a “cuckoo in the nest” occupying a spot that didn’t belong to her, Ye Yichi felt that if she had even a shred of conscience, she had to hurry up and vacate the position she had usurped.
“After I return the card, we’ll go to the Notary Office to sign the papers, then to the Civil Affairs Bureau for the divorce. Let’s settle everything today,” Ye Yichi said with a smile. “It’s been three years; it’s time for it to end.”
On the way to Huawan, Xin Ning didn’t speak again.
Ye Yichi took a shower and changed her clothes. When she came out, Xin Ning was standing at the entrance of Huawan holding an umbrella.
“Let’s go,” Xin Ning said. “As you wish to the Notary Office.”
Signing the notarized documents was a quick process. Xin Ning didn’t even look at the content; she flipped straight to the last page and signed her name.
At least look at it, Ye Yichi grumbled silently. If you don’t look, aren’t all those cars the original host sold for nothing? No, she couldn’t look at it that way. The cars were sold to raise the startup capital for the Xin family’s comeback. Now that the Xin family had risen again, those cars had served their purpose.
Ye Yichi also flipped to the end, signed her name, and stuffed her copy into her bag. “Hurry up, we still have to get to the Civil Affairs Bureau.”
“With our identities, going directly to the Civil Affairs Bureau isn’t appropriate.” Xin Ning gripped the notarized document, not looking at her.
Her cold voice mixed with the bustling noise around them, sounding somewhat surreal: “Tomorrow. Tomorrow at nine, come to my house. I’ve requested the Civil Affairs Bureau to handle the process on-site.”
The Civil Affairs Bureau provides home service now? How truly people oriented. Ye Yichi silently gave a thumbs-up to the staff who cared so much for the masses.
“Alright then, see you tomorrow at nine.”
Today’s business was done. Where to go now? Since she was in the city, she might as well stay at the apartment. Ye Yichi wandered out of the office, head down as she checked bus routes. When she looked up again, a white Bentley had silently pulled up in front of her.
Xin Ning rolled down the window. “Get in. I’ll drop you off.”
“No need.” Ye Yichi raised her hand and hailed a taxi.
Through the misty, rain blurred window of the cab, Ye Yichi quietly watched the Bentley fade into the distance. Taxis are expensive, she thought. For someone about to leave the marriage with nothing, it really hurt her wallet, okay?
She blamed Xin Ning’s ill-timed hospitality it had made her too embarrassed to wait for the bus.
By the time Ye Yichi reached the apartment, the rain had stopped, and the air carried the faint scent of damp earth.
She hadn’t been back for nearly a week, and a thin layer of dust had settled on the table. She did a quick cleaning and ordered takeout. While lounging on the sofa waiting for her food, she received a message from Su Fanxing saying she had managed to snag an appointment for tomorrow afternoon.
It happened to be right after the divorce. She smiled and replied, “See you tomorrow.”
The next day, Ye Yichi woke up very early. Opening the curtains, she could see the faint orange glow of dawn surging over the horizon.
It was a sunny day.
The last time it was sunny, she had waited in vain for twenty minutes at the Civil Affairs Bureau gates. This time, no matter what, she was getting this divorce done.
At 8:45 AM, Ye Yichi arrived at the villa ahead of schedule.
The Civil Affairs Bureau staff member was already waiting.
It was a young, beautiful girl in a crisp uniform with full makeup. Standing by the table, she looked quite professional. Ye Yichi figured that since home service was a high-end luxury, they had specifically sent someone whose looks rivaled an idol star.
It was nice having such a pretty girl handle the divorce made the occasion feel almost celebratory.
The divorce process was faster than Ye Yichi had imagined. The girl asked nothing, she took their marriage certificates, produced two green-covered divorce certificates, helped them paste their photos, and clack-clack stamped them with the official seal before packing up and leaving.
“That’s… it? We’re divorced?” Ye Yichi flipped through her divorce certificate.
The seal was slightly off-center, it didn’t touch Xin Ning’s side but was stamped right on the cheek of Ye Yichi’s photo. The semicircular arc grazed the bridge of her nose, making her face look swollen.
How fitting, Ye Yichi curled her lip. A vivid physical representation of the idiom “slapping one’s own face to look fat” (putting on a brave front).
Su Fanxing had snagged an appointment with a specialist for 3:30 PM. When they arrived at the hospital at 2:00 PM, the outpatient hall was swarming with people.
“There are way too many people with brain troubles these days,” Su Fanxing scratched her head gloomily and handed Grandma Su over to Ye Yichi. “Sis, watch Grandma. I’m going to squeeze in to check us in.”
“Go, Little Sour Plum!” Grandma Su shouted. “Charge forward boldly!”
“Grandma, keep your voice down,” Ye Yichi shivered in embarrassment.
The massive crowd didn’t react at all.
Ye Yichi figured these people were either not quite “normal” themselves or had spent so much time with “abnormal” people that they had developed an immunity to outbursts. Humans are great at adapting to their environment just like her, after living with Xin Ning for so long, her cold-resistance had significantly improved.
Stop, stop. On such a great day, why was she thinking about that jinx of an ex-wife?
“Did I scare Little Cranberry? Alright, Grandma will switch to something else something soft and melodic,” Grandma Su cleared her throat and began to sing with gestures, “Yi-yi-ya-ya… that is the Three Inches of Snow…”
“Grandma, maybe change to another one?” Ye Yichi urged.
Thinking of her ex-wife was bad luck, and hearing “Three Inches of Snow” felt like bad luck too.
“Oh, Three Inches of Snow, Three Inches of Snow.” Grandma Su dropped the operatic style and switched to a normal tone, gesturing back and forth.
Fine, Three Inches of Snow it is, Ye Yichi sighed inwardly.
Now that she was a free woman after the divorce, where would her “Three Inches of Snow” ex-wife be? Was she reporting the good news to the great beauty Lin Weilan? Or going to the Orange Welfare House to notify the director?
“Three Inches of Snow! Three Inches of Snow!” Grandma Su raised her voice, pulling on Ye Yichi and pointing.
“Oh, right, Three Inches of Snow,” Ye Yichi played along.
“Stop with the ‘Three Inches of Snow.’ The person ahead of us didn’t show up; it’s our turn to wait by the door.” Su Fanxing squeezed out of the crowd, grabbing Grandma Su with her left hand and Ye Yichi with her right, turning back to push through. “Make way, please make way! We’ve got the elderly, a kid, and a pregnant woman here! Please make way, folks!”
Ye Yichi looked at Grandma Su, then at Su Fanxing. They had the old and the young, but where was the pregnant woman?
“Sis, it’s time to show your professional acting skills,” Su Fanxing whispered in her ear.
Professional skills my foot.
Ye Yichi wanted to hit her. “You want me to pretend to be pregnant? Are you asking for a beating?”
“Then hit me.” Su Fanxing pushed Grandma Su into the consultation room and winked at Ye Yichi. “As long as hitting me lets you vent your frustration, just don’t do anything rash.”
“What would I do that’s rash?” Ye Yichi was baffled.
“Before my sister had her accident, she looked just like you do today,” Su Fanxing sighed. “Eyes swollen like you’re about to cry but can’t, trying to smile but failing.”
Swollen eyes? Were her eyes swollen?
Ye Yichi quickly turned on her phone’s front camera. They really were a bit puffy. That shouldn’t be she had slept okay last night, and with the divorce finalized, her mind was at ease and her mood was decent. Why were her eyes swollen for no reason?
“Sis, what exactly happened? Tell me about it,” Su Fanxing gently tugged on Ye Yichi’s arm. “I was too young when my sister had her accident to be of any help. But I’m older now, I can handle things. If something’s wrong, tell me, and I’ll stand up for you.”
“You little brat, you haven’t even taken your high school entrance exams yet, and you’re thinking about standing up for people?” Ye Yichi was moved to laughter. “What happened to your sister was my aunt’s fault. We Yes…”
“What do you mean, ‘We Yes’?” Su Fanxing interrupted her with a scowl.
“Ye Shijin is Ye Shijin, and Ye Yichi is Ye Yichi. Whatever sins Ye Shijin committed has nothing to do with you. Your shoulders aren’t that broad why are you always trying to carry everyone else’s baggage?”
True. Ye Yichi tightened her grip, the phone pressing painfully into her palm.
Ye Shijin was Ye Shijin, and Ye Yichi was Ye Yichi. Such a simple truth that Su Fanxing understood and Grandma Su understood so why didn’t that jerk Xin Ning understand?
“Sis, what really happened?” Su Fanxing asked stubbornly. “I’m scared when you don’t say anything.”
“I just got a divorce. It’s no big deal.” Ye Yichi’s eyes felt a bit stingy.
She rubbed her eyes. There were no tears.
Oh, right. She had performed that crying scene the day before yesterday; she had used up all her tears.
Grandma Su was in the consultation room for nearly twenty minutes. When the door opened, the nurse called the family in. The diagnosis was similar to the last time: pathological brain changes caused by Alzheimer’s, but luckily no concurrent decline in cognitive ability.
“Just continue with normal care at home,” the doctor instructed. “Let her do tasks within her capability things like laundry or cooking. If she’s willing, she could even raise some chickens or ducks. Staying busy helps slow the progression.”
Walking out of the clinic, Su Fanxing pulled on Ye Yichi. “Sis, move back to Huawan.”
“Hmm?”
“The doctor said to keep Grandma busy. Cooking for three people is busier than cooking for two.”
“Okay,” Ye Yichi nodded.
She had moved out to avoid Xin Ning. Now that the divorce was final, there was no need to keep hiding.
“Hooray! Little Cranberry is moving back!” Grandma Su chirped happily. “Three Inches of Snow! Three Inches of Snow!”
“What does her moving back have to do with Three Inches of Snow?” Su Fanxing asked, exasperated.
“Three Inches of Snow is my ex-wife,” Ye Yichi said softly. She hadn’t intentionally kept it a secret before; she just hadn’t found the right time or seen the necessity to mention it.
Now that the marriage was over, Ye Yichi suddenly felt like talking about it.
Not for comfort or celebration, but just to say it to someone. And after saying it… she would turn the page like a calendar, and Xin Ning would never be a part of her life again.
“What?” Su Fanxing’s phoenix eyes blinked. “Ah! She’s the jerk who made you cry until your eyes were swollen?!”
That’s not actually true, Ye Yichi thought. The person who made her cry was the screenwriter. Just as she was about to explain, Grandma Su gripped her arm tightly.
“Three Inches of Snow.”
Following the direction Grandma Su was pointing, Ye Yichi saw Xin Ning’s tall figure.
This is too ridiculous. Ye Yichi twitched the corner of her mouth. Divorced in the morning, meeting at the hospital in the afternoon life really was more dramatic than a TV show.
But then again, Xin Ning was the protagonist.
What was the protagonist doing at the hospital? Was she sick? Was she alone?
Scanning the area around Xin Ning, Ye Yichi didn’t see Lin Weilan. Did she really come alone? Even if she did, it had nothing to do with her as the ex-wife.
Stay still, legs. Don’t go over there, Ye Yichi thought.
Her legs obeyed.
Ye Yichi gave herself a mental gold star.
“The jerk who made you cry actually dares to show her face?!” Su Fanxing let go of Ye Yichi and stomped forward aggressively. “Sis, you wait here. I’m going to give her a piece of my mind for you!”
