Chapter 31: Annoying Rumors
She had spent the entire walk back to the dorm rehearsing those three words. She thought they would feel cheesy or impossible to say, but to her surprise, once they were out, she felt a wave of relief.
However, Chen Jia just looked at her without speaking, making her heart leap into her throat again. Every second of Chen Jia’s silence was agony.
Su Su’s nose crinkled, her voice sounding a bit thick. “Are you going to break off our friendship?”
If she had known this would be the outcome, she thought, she might as well have confessed and stolen a kiss first. Now she had gained nothing and lost everything—a total deficit.
“No.”
“Huh?” Su Su felt herself coming back to life.
“Then why didn’t you say anything? You scared me to death.” Having received a response, Su Su felt like a parched fish returned to water. “I know I made you lose face today. I swear it’s the last time, I—”
Chen Jia sighed helplessly. “You wanted me to remember my college life forever through this ‘simple and crude’ method. Well, thank you. You succeeded. I’ll probably be dreaming about this now.”
In truth, Chen Jia didn’t really blame her. It was just that her own personality lacked that “extroverted spark,” making it hard to process the situation at first. But the moment she saw Su Su’s pitiful, worried face, all her discomfort vanished.
Fine. She didn’t want to lose Su Su as a friend either. If their personalities were incompatible, then someone had to learn to be the bigger person. Since she was technically older (in spirit) than Su Su, it didn’t hurt to be a little more indulgent. Let her be the one to bridge the gap.
Once she reached this realization, a smile returned to her face.
She said seriously, “I’m not saying being like you is bad. I just hope you can take things one step at a time next time, rather than hitting me with something so… intense.”
Having nearly lost her friend, Su Su didn’t dare try that again. She shook her head. “I won’t do it again.”
But then, as if realizing that a total promise might block her future paths—especially if she couldn’t help herself one day—she quickly amended: “I’ll try not to do it again.”
Her little schemes were written all over her face. Even if Chen Jia hadn’t wanted to notice, she couldn’t help it.
Now that the air was cleared, Su Su cheered up again. “My tiger suit fell on the floor just now, and I stepped on it a few times.”
Actually, she had tripped because she was in such a rush to catch up.
Chen Jia had been preoccupied earlier, but now she noticed Su Su was walking strangely. She looked down and saw a patch of skin scraped off Su Su’s knee.
“Don’t move!”
Connecting the dots with Su Su’s words, Chen Jia immediately understood what had happened. Her eyes filled with concern, making Su Su’s heart itch. Feeling a bit self-conscious, Su Su looked away and mumbled, “It’s all because of you. I told you, you’re the only friend I’ve ever really had. If you stop hanging out with me, no one will want me.”
If she had just met Su Su, Chen Jia might have believed that. But from what she knew, Su Su was actually quite popular in her clubs, and people were constantly inviting her out for meals. Su Su just preferred to rot in the dorm.
Following Chen Jia’s lead, Su Su sat in the chair. She watched as Chen Jia used a wet towel to gently wipe the dirt from the wound, then pulled out the iodine from the school-issued medical kit to disinfect it.
From this angle, Chen Jia’s face was truly stunning.
She used to think Chen Jia was just “pretty,” but ever since she realized her own feelings, she had developed a sort of “thirst.” She constantly wanted to reach out and touch her, or kiss her.
With her ears turning red, she looked away. The cotton swab dipped in iodine moved gently over the scrape. She hadn’t felt much when she fell, but now it stung like crazy.
“Ow! Gentler… hiss…”
She was just reacting to the pain, but to an outsider, the sounds were a bit… ambiguous.
There was a slight noise at the door. Chen Jia went to open it and found Li Sisi and Sun Yimiao pushing and shoving each other in the hallway. Seeing Chen Jia, their expressions turned instantly awkward.
Sun Yimiao looked apologetic. “Did we come back at a bad time? If it’s inconvenient, we can go for another walk?”
Chen Jia frowned, confused. “There’s nothing inconvenient.”
Sun Yimiao peeked into the room and saw that they were just tending to a wound. She let out a massive sigh of relief. “Sorry, we overthought it. We thought you guys were…”
She trailed off. Li Sisi quickly poked her in the back. Sun Yimiao caught herself and sheepishly shut her mouth.
“Thought we were what?”
She shouldn’t have piqued Su Su’s curiosity. Once Su Su wanted to know something, she wouldn’t stop until she found out.
Sun Yimiao: “Nothing.” Su Su: “I don’t believe you.”
Sun Yimiao was usually blunt and terrible at lying. She cast a desperate, pleading look at Li Sisi. Li Sisi sighed; there was no helping it now.
“Fine. If we keep it from you, it’ll just be more awkward when you leave the dorm. Honestly, we don’t really believe it either, we just didn’t want you to feel upset.”
The school Arts Festival, coming right after military training, was a peak time for “confession fever” among freshmen. Because Chen Jia and Su Su’s performance was so unique, they had caught everyone’s eye. Combined with their looks, the school’s “Confession Wall” (the online forum) was exploding with posts about them.
As one particular post gained massive traction, an account named “Don’t Call Me, I’m Not Here” commented: “Even though I think these two girls are beautiful, they’re actually a couple. Don’t you guys feel awkward hitting on them? I’m not saying this to be judgmental, I just hope people don’t disturb them.”
This was the spark that lit the fire. Since a rumor had already circulated during military training about “sounds” coming from the girls’ showers, the news that these two beauties were dating sent the single population into a meltdown.
The post’s popularity skyrocketed. “No way, the beauties are doing ‘internal consumption’?” “It’s fake, right? The person who posted this is probably just jealous because no one likes them.” “Disgusting.” “’Not judgmental’? If you really didn’t want to disturb them, you’d keep your mouth shut instead of broadcasting it. Such a ‘Green Tea’ move.” “Pretty girls belong with pretty girls.”
In this day and age, acceptance is higher, but that doesn’t mean everyone is supportive. The insults were starting to outweigh the well-wishes.
Su Su was so angry she forgot she was even injured. “Agh! I can’t take this! My phone—where’s my phone?!”
