Chapter 23: An Alternative Way to Play the “Villainess”
After Su Su finished speaking, she felt she was being incredibly romantic.
But when she turned around, she saw Chen Jia’s brow slightly furrowed, showing absolutely no sign of being moved.
“What are you thinking about?”
“I’m just thinking… what if the person you like dies first? He didn’t write a diary.”
“…”
Even though she didn’t have a partner yet, listening to Chen Jia’s words made Su Su feel a sudden wave of melancholy.
“That’s fine too. There are so many days in a person’s life, you can’t remember everything that happened. It’ll be interesting when I flip through it later. For example, today is October 2nd. Let me see…”
She flipped open a diary. Seeing the childish handwriting on the yellowed paper, Chen Jia instinctively lowered her eyelids, having a very bad premonition.
Su Su cleared her throat: “Ahem… October 2, 2013. Sunny. Today, Auntie…”
After reading a few words, Chen Jia looked up, preparing to listen intently, only to see Su Su snap the diary shut without another word.
“I think… sometimes, these diaries aren’t strictly necessary to write…”
This was too embarrassing! What on earth had she written back then?
Chen Jia’s curiosity was cut off right at the root. “Why didn’t you finish?”
“Since when did you become so nosy?” Su Su placed the box on the coffee table, planning to take it home tomorrow.
“We aren’t going back tonight?” Chen Jia asked, puzzled.
“Right. I already told Mom we’d stay here tonight. Auntie said the bedding has already been aired out.”
She pulled Chen Jia into the bedroom. The decor was still the familiar “princess style,” though this room clearly belonged to a much younger version of that aesthetic. The posters on the walls were still of Barbie and flower princesses.
Opening the window, there were succulents on the sill. Due to the dry weather, they looked shriveled and lackluster. Su Su pointed in a direction outside: “That way is my old school.”
It looked to be about a fifteen-minute walk.
“But there aren’t many memories worth revisiting at school. I won’t take you there this time; maybe when there’s another chance.”
Though she said it lightly, she actually cared quite a bit about those school memories.
Since they had already eaten, and she had promised to take Chen Jia around, they couldn’t stay indoors forever. “There’s a night market nearby. It’s very lively. Auntie Pan used to have a stall there. There’s lots of good food; we have to go see.”
She reached for Chen Jia’s hand but found her standing still. Chen Jia’s beautiful eyes were fixed on her, full of scrutiny.
Though Chen Jia hadn’t come from a wealthy family, she had seen plenty of rich kids. She had to admit, Su Su was the most “grounded” one she had ever met.
“What’s wrong?” Su Su instinctively touched her face, thinking there was dirt on it.
“Nothing. Let’s go.”
Downstairs, the two shared bikes they had ridden over were no longer a pair; only one remained lonely in its spot.
“Let’s walk then. It’s not far anyway.”
Just as Su Su made the suggestion, a fierce argument nearby caught their attention. Turning their heads, they saw the two people who had been kissing passionately yesterday now locked in a bitter dispute.
Lin Yue’er, her eyes red, pushed Jiang Hanting away. “The Madame is usually very kind to me. I can’t let my feelings for you stop you from forming an alliance with the Su family…”
Su Su was originally going to watch the drama, but hearing this made her instantly annoyed. “Hey! What kind of talk is that? You make it sound like if he wanted an alliance, I’d actually say yes.”
This was the first time Chen Jia had seen Lin Yue’er’s face clearly. She perfectly fit the “Mary Sue” campus novel archetype—a delicate “Little White Flower” with a look that immediately evoked pity.
Having read the whole book, Chen Jia knew Lin Yue’er was actually quite capable on her own, but as soon as she fell in love, it was as if a zombie had eaten her brain.
Hearing Su Su’s voice, Lin Yue’er froze. Her gaze toward Su Su was full of envy, which shifted into guilt a moment later. Her pale, clean face was full of panic.
“Miss Su, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you and Hanting had an engagement. If I had known, I never would have been with him…”
Before she could finish, Su Su had heard enough.
“Stop, stop, stop! My family is very sensible; we don’t do that ‘alliance’ nonsense. He and I are completely uninvolved. Don’t go spreading rumors.” She practically wanted to carve “Don’t associate with me” on her forehead.
Lin Yue’er saw that she truly didn’t like Jiang Hanting and gave an awkward smile.
Jiang Hanting stepped in front of Lin Yue’er, shielding her fragile frame completely. “Didn’t I say I don’t care for you? I made it clear yesterday that we should keep our distance. Why are you still swarming around like a fly that won’t go away?”
Su Su dug at her ear, wondering if her hearing was failing. How could she hear such a delusional statement?
“You call me a fly? What exactly are you? I’ve been humble since I was a kid; I wish you’d give me half of your confidence.”
“You…”
Unlike Su Su, Jiang Hanting had grown up in an elite environment. Even if people disliked each other, they maintained a surface level of polite hypocrisy. No one had ever been like Su Su—showing her dislike so openly without giving any face, using biting sarcasm.
In the heat of the day, his face turned a deep red.
To prevent Su Su from following the original plot, Chen Jia hated seeing her have too much interaction with Jiang Hanting. Even this kind of hostile bickering had to be minimized, because who knew how much the “psychotic plot armor” would warp things.
“Arranged marriages are illegal now,” Chen Jia said, her tone relatively mild. “Fortunately, the Su family elders are law-abiding. So, you two can argue all you want, but please don’t drag innocent bystanders into it.”
Su Su, however, wasn’t nearly as polite. She glanced at Jiang Hanting’s dark expression. “Have you ever considered that your girlfriend actually wants to break up with you, and she’s just using me as a shield?”
Meeting Lin Yue’er’s startled gaze, Su Su realized she might have accidentally hurt an innocent “romance-brained” bystander.
“Sorry, I’m just guessing. Actually, what I want to say is that a man with this kind of emotional instability looks very dangerous. Sister, do you want to consider finding a new boyfriend?”
The moment she finished, Jiang Hanting roared: “Su Su!”
“What are you shouting for?” She had caught the evidence of his instability. She grabbed Lin Yue’er’s hand and said earnestly: “See? See? I told you his emotions were unstable.”
Standing behind her, Chen Jia watched Su Su maneuver between Jiang Hanting and Lin Yue’er and couldn’t help but let her lips twitch into a smile.
This… counted as breaking up the lead couple, right?
Had Su Su discovered an alternative way to be a “villainous supporting character”?
