Chapter 36: Jing-Selection Was This Easy to Snag for the First Time…
Qian Bo and the two foreign brand executives had originally planned to spend the entire day enjoying themselves at the equestrian club. However, shortly after President Lin and President Chen left, the other two also made their departures.
Qian Bo still didn’t believe the data the staff had reported. How could netizens dare to buy home appliances worth thousands of yuan online? Weren’t they afraid of not receiving the goods, or of being unable to find after-sales service if something went wrong?
The issues Qian Bo worried about were concerns shared by many—even some merchants themselves. Why did those netizens trust them so much?
In reality, the first wave of buyers didn’t necessarily trust the brand manufacturers; they trusted Jing-Selection.
Ji Yu, Bai Ke’s neighbor, hadn’t believed in Jing-Selection at first either. It was only after seeing Bai Ke receive her goods that she joined others in registering for the app. Now, she bought almost everything through Jing-Selection and had never experienced a “flip” (a failed purchase or scam). Like Bai Ke, she had become a hardcore fan.
When Jing-Selection first started promoting the Home Appliance Festival, Ji Yu was already paying close attention. Her parents had just finished decorating a new house in their hometown and needed appliances. However, their hometown was a small fourth or fifth-tier city. Some high-end appliances she liked didn’t have physical stores there, and ordering from a neighboring city required a hefty delivery fee.
When she told her parents she would buy the appliances online, their first reaction was to refuse. Her father’s tone made it sound like she had joined a cult: “Don’t believe that internet stuff. If a store one city over won’t deliver for free, how can someone ten thousand miles away do it for a cheaper price? It’s definitely a scam!”
Ji Yu tried patiently to explain: “This app has never failed. They sign contracts directly with big brands. The goods come straight from the manufacturers, not the app itself!”
Her father remained stubborn: “Just don’t do anything fancy. If we can’t get those brands, we’ll buy others. And those ‘robots’ and dishwashers you mentioned? Completely unnecessary!”
Knowing logic wouldn’t work on her stubborn father, Ji Yu used her ultimate trump card: “Well, I’ve already bought them. You’ll just have to wait for the delivery. They can’t be returned now.” (In reality, the event hadn’t even started yet.)
…
The “Easy” Snag
By 8:00 AM on Saturday, Bai Ke and Ji Yu were both nervous, frantically clicking to secure the appliances.
However, things were different this time. Unlike the first “Inventory Clearance” event or the “Support the Farmers” week, these appliance giants were fully prepared. They had ramped up production weeks in advance, filling warehouses to the brim.
After Ji Yu and Bai Ke finished their shopping, they actually felt a bit of a letdown.
Ji Yu bit into a piece of toast and said to Bai Ke, “I don’t feel much of an achievement. I checked the links again, and there are still tens of thousands of units available. Are netizens not trying hard enough this time?”
Bai Ke sighed in relief. “You’re lucky. If you actually couldn’t grab them, you’d be crying right now.”
Similar scenes played out across the internet. Soon, the hashtag #JingSelectionFirstTimeThisEasyToSnag# trended on Weibo. Netizens posted jokingly:
“I prepared for a week, and after I bought it, there was no sense of achievement. President Sang, we need a ‘sold out’ sign to feel like we won!”
“In the past, things were gone in a second. This time, I went back to the link and there was more stock than before I started!”
“Is this festival going to flop?”
…
The Reality of the Numbers
While netizens worried about the “future” of the app, the official Jing-Selection Weibo posted a bright red celebration graphic:
@JingSelection: Congratulations to Jing-Selection for breaking 50,000 orders in three hours! Congratulations to @LinGroup and @ChenGroup for breaking 10,000 orders each in three hours!
Ji Yu didn’t immediately grasp the scale. “Only 10,000? In President Sang’s livestream, she sold 10,000 orders of fruit in a minute!”
Bai Ke rolled her eyes. “You’re terrible at math. 10,000 orders of fruit is maybe 200,000 yuan. But 10,000 orders of appliances? That’s tens of millions of yuan!”
The realization didn’t just hit the netizens; it hit the brand owners who hadn’t participated.
The MD general manager was immediately chewed out by his headquarters. He was told to get MD appliances onto the platform immediately or prepare his resignation letter. He scrambled to contact Jing-Selection’s business department, only to be told: “Sorry, registration for this event is closed. We cannot add new participants mid-stream.”
He even managed to pull strings to call Sang Jing directly. He used his accented Chinese to plead, saying they were willing to plan for the upcoming days of the festival.
Sang Jing replied politely but firmly: “I am very sorry, sir. This event was prepared long in advance. Adding any new enterprise now would disrupt our logistics and workflow. We value the integrity of the event. However, Jing-Selection will hold more festivals in the future, and we would be honored to invite MD then.”
After hanging up, she handed her phone to her assistant, Zuo Wei. “If anyone else calls wanting to cooperate, push them to the business department. Tell them to open their own stores and buy their own promotions.”
Zuo Wei nodded, thinking how these people had looked down on Jing-Selection before and were now begging for a spot.
“But President Sang is busy,” Zuo Wei thought. “Even though the current transaction volume is great, these buyers aren’t even our primary target audience yet. Our real targets are the fourth and fifth-tier cities and the rural counties.”
The real show hadn’t even started yet.
