Chapter 34: A Grand Drama Outside the Lounge
Wu Lingshan was completely oblivious to the coldness in Sang Jing’s eyes. She grew more arrogant, smiling at Sang Jing and An Siyuan. “So what if you can chat happily with people like President Chen? In the end, you’re both just women dumped by President Yan. You’ve lost your chance to marry into the Yan family. How will you ever get ahead in this life? By selling things online?”
An Siyuan frowned. Wu Lingshan’s words reminded her of things Mrs. An used to say. “The most important thing for a woman is marriage. Even if a strong woman like Sang Jing does well in her career, no one wants to marry her.”
Back then, she might have been confused, but now she could truly feel what it meant to have power in her own hands. She retorted, “Why can’t someone get ahead by selling things online? Does marrying President Yan count as getting ahead? Is attaching your entire existence to a man something to be proud of?”
Sang Jing looked at An Siyuan in surprise. She hadn’t expected the original heroine to gain such a clear perspective so quickly after taking power.
Wu Lingshan looked as if her nerves had been struck. Her expression turned twisted. “Why shouldn’t I be proud? If I’m with President Yan, the things you have to work so hard for will be handed to me on a silver platter. Why wouldn’t I be proud of that?”
Sang Jing gave a cold laugh. “Then I’d like to ask Yan Ye: will he really marry you? And after he marries you, can he really give you everything you want?”
Wu Lingshan’s face darkened. Most of the circle believed Yan Ye broke the engagement because An Siyuan was a “slum girl” who didn’t fit in. But those closer to the Yan family knew the real reason: Yan Ye had always insisted that the person he was engaged to was Sang Jing, not just “the daughter of the An family.”
Silenced by Sang Jing’s barb, Wu Lingshan quickly regained her composure. She thought of what was to happen tonight. Once she secured her place in the Yan family, she would have absolute power. She raised her glass. “In the future, when I marry into a super-rich family, you’ll understand what real power is.” She then sauntered away.
Sang Jing barely held back an eye-roll. Why were the women in this world so obsessed with men? Reliable men existed, but Yan Ye certainly wasn’t one of them.
…
The Auction and the Disappearance
The auction began shortly after. Sang Jing wasn’t interested in the collectibles, so she let her father bid on a few items for charity. However, she grew tense when Yan Ye arrived.
After a while, Yan Ye looked noticeably unwell and left the room. Wu Lingshan followed shortly after. Sang Jing had arranged for someone to intercept Wu Lingshan’s ex-boyfriend earlier—she wondered if the ex was currently distracting Wu as he did in the novel. But then, she noticed An Siyuan was also missing from the hall.
Sang Jing’s heart skipped a beat. Is the plot irreversible? Is An Siyuan still going to end up entangled with Yan Ye?
Thinking of An Siyuan’s recent dedication to her career, Sang Jing decided to help. Even if they ended up together, it shouldn’t be because of a forced accident and an unwanted pregnancy. If the plot returned to the “dog-blood” romance path, An Siyuan would be tortured by Yan Ye’s cruelty.
“I’m going to the restroom,” Sang Jing whispered to her parents.
She remembered the novel mentioned a lounge on the second floor. She took the elevator up, searching cautiously. She found An Siyuan near the second-floor restroom.
“Sister? Why are you here?” An Siyuan asked, surprised.
Sang Jing breathed a sigh of relief. “I was looking for you. Shall we go down together?”
An Siyuan nodded. “I was going to sit in the lounge for a bit, but we can just rest in the auction hall.”
As they turned the corner toward the elevator, they heard Wu Lingshan’s sharp voice. She was arguing with a gloomy-looking man—her ex-boyfriend. After a heated exchange, the man retreated, and Wu Lingshan checked her phone before slipping into a lounge and locking the door.
…
The Confrontation
An Siyuan looked at Sang Jing, noticing the strange look in her eyes. “Sister, is there something wrong with that room?”
Sang Jing placed a finger to her lips. She pulled out her phone and called the front desk. “Hello, I’m at the lounge area. Please inform Mrs. Yan immediately that a woman has entered her son’s private rest area.”
An Siyuan was bewildered. “What’s going to happen?”
“Why would Yan Ye stay in a lounge for so long, and why would Wu Lingshan sneak in?” Sang Jing whispered. “I’m bringing Mrs. Yan up so we can watch the show.”
A few minutes later, a furious Mrs. Yan arrived with hotel security. They forced the door open. A minute later, Mrs. Yan dragged a disheveled Wu Lingshan out and threw her onto the hallway floor. Wu Lingshan scrambled to fix her torn evening gown as staff and onlookers gathered.
“You tramp!” Mrs. Yan screamed. “What did you do to my son? Why are you in there? Did you drug him just to force your way into the Yan family? You think we’d ever accept someone so low?”
Wu Lingshan looked up, her eyes defiant. “I am already President Yan’s woman. I might even be carrying his child! You might not want to acknowledge me, but surely you won’t deny the Yan family’s heir?”
Sang Jing raised an eyebrow. Mrs. Yan sneered, “You were in there for a few minutes and you’re already claiming a pregnancy? Do you think I’m stupid?”
Wu Lingshan blushed. “But it’s done! I have his child!”
Watching from the sidelines, Sang Jing couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Sister, what are you laughing at?” An Siyuan whispered.
“Think about it,” Sang Jing whispered back. “She was only in there for a few minutes. If the ‘process’ is finished that quickly… it seems President Yan isn’t very capable.”
An Siyuan’s face turned bright red.
As more socialites gathered, Sang Jing and An Siyuan stepped out from the shadows. The front desk staff confirmed to Mrs. Yan, “We notified you after receiving a call from Miss Sang.”
Mrs. Yan looked at Sang Jing. She was stunned by Sang Jing’s elegant, composed aura. None of the other socialites present could compare to her. Is this why my son is obsessed with her? Mrs. Yan wondered.
Wu Lingshan glared at Sang Jing with pure hatred. “It was you! You set me up!”
Sang Jing acted confused. “Why would I set you up? We have no grudge. I called to save you! Imagine if you stayed there longer—you might have lost your virtue!”
An Siyuan stared at Sang Jing, feeling a world of new possibilities opening up. Is this my sister? She felt a strange sense of satisfaction hearing Sang Jing’s sharp wit.
Wu Lingshan trembled with rage. “You… you just didn’t want me to marry Yan Ye, so you ruined…” She stopped, realizing she had just admitted to a scheme.
Mrs. Yan pounced. “So it was you! I wasn’t sure if you drugged my son, but you just confessed! You want to marry into my family? In your dreams!”
Wu Lingshan panicked. “No! I’m the victim! I was forced to help him with the drug… I might be pregnant with your grandson!”
“Someone!” Mrs. Yan barked. “Send her to the hospital immediately! I will never allow a woman like this to carry a child of the Yan family!”
