Chapter 27: Breaking the Engagement
Although An Siyuan felt that Sang Jing could help the An family out of their current predicament, she didn’t tell her parents what she was thinking. After all, the root of the An family’s crisis was Mrs. An’s failed attempt to force a partnership with Sang Jing.
Instead, Mrs. An decided to take An Siyuan to the Yan family to seek help. However, when she tried to schedule a meeting, Mrs. Yan flatly refused.
Mrs. An panicked. The two families were supposed to be joined by marriage—how could they refuse to even see her? She forced her voice to stay calm. “It’s just that Siyuan misses President Yan, but she’s too shy to go alone, so she begged me to take her. Young people need to spend more time together for their feelings to develop.”
Mrs. Yan replied with a polite but chilling laugh, “Indeed, feelings should develop naturally. We adults shouldn’t force things, or it might backfire, don’t you think?”
Mrs. An’s heart sank. She made one last desperate push. “Then I’ll just bring the child over and let the two of them meet privately.”
After a long silence, Mrs. Yan finally agreed. “Fine, let them have dinner. Yan Ye happens to have something to say to Siyuan anyway.”
…
The Cold Truth
As soon as she hung up, Mrs. Yan called her son. “You’re free tonight, aren’t you? Make time for dinner with An Siyuan.”
Yan Ye immediately moved to refuse, but his mother cut him off. “You want to break the engagement sooner or later, right? Since they are practically begging to see you, just say it directly and get it over with.”
Yan Ye frowned deeply. “I’ve told you before, the person I had an engagement with was Sang Jing. Even if she isn’t an An by blood, she is the only one I recognize as my fiancée.”
Mrs. Yan’s eyes darkened. She had never liked Sang Jing—the woman was too bright, too sharp, and far too difficult to control. She preferred the sweet, simple An Siyuan, whom she could mold into a perfect daughter-in-law. But since her son was stubborn, she could only let them meet.
At the restaurant, An Siyuan arrived in a five-figure designer dress, her makeup flawless. She looked every bit the socialite, with no trace of her past life in the slums. When she saw Yan Ye, her heart fluttered. She had been a “Cinderella” dreaming of her prince ever since she learned of the engagement.
But before the meal even began, Yan Ye’s words hit her like a bucket of ice water.
“I asked to meet today to tell you one thing,” Yan Ye said coldly. “I initially thought my engagement was with Sang Jing. Even though she left the An family, I cannot let her go. Therefore, I am breaking the engagement with you.”
An Siyuan felt humiliated and heartbroken. “Why won’t you even give me a chance to get to know you?” she thought. But she couldn’t leave in a huff; she had a mission.
“I… I also came for another reason,” she stammered, her voice thick with tears.
“I know,” Yan Ye interrupted. “You want me to save the An family. I’m sorry, I cannot help you.” Without another word, he stood up and left.
…
A Different Path
An Siyuan sat alone in the private room, feeling a despair deeper than anything she’d felt back when she was working multiple jobs to pay off her foster parents’ debts. She didn’t dare go home. She knew that without the Yan family’s support, her biological parents might start looking at her with the same resentment her foster parents once had.
Is Sang Jing the ‘Chosen One’? she wondered bitterly. Is she the lucky star who brings prosperity wherever she goes, while I’m just a jinx?
When she snapped out of her spiral, she found herself standing in front of the Jing-Selection office building. The new office was sleek and modern, designed in the warm, comfortable style Sang Jing remembered from her previous life.
An Siyuan walked to the front desk, her hands clenched. “Can I see Sang Jing? Tell her it’s An Siyuan.”
Upstairs, Sang Jing sighed when she heard the news. She had tried to avoid the main characters to change her fate, but they kept seeking her out. If I can’t hide, I might as well face them head-on, she thought. “Let her up.”
…
Effort and Reality
When An Siyuan entered, she was a mess of tears and designer silk. “Why does fate always side with you?” she sobbed. “I finally got a better birthright, but everything is still falling apart. No matter how hard I work, there are no good results!”
Zuo Wei, who was bringing in coffee, rolled her eyes and couldn’t stay silent. She set the coffee down and looked An Siyuan in the eye.
“How hard exactly do you work, Miss An?” Zuo Wei asked coldly. “What time do you wake up? How late do you stay up? Have you ever gone on a business trip? How many meetings do you lead a day? President Sang is up before dawn, works through the night during campaigns, and doesn’t even have time to eat while traveling for livestreams. She has three meetings today and is only seeing you during a break. Are you really more hardworking than her?”
Siyuan was speechless.
Sang Jing gave a small smile, comforted by her assistant’s loyalty. “Zuo Wei, check the materials for the meeting.” Once Zuo Wei left, Sang Jing looked at An Siyuan.
“In my memory, you weren’t this kind of person,” Sang Jing said, sipping her coffee. “I remember you as a very strong girl. Back when my parents’ conditions were terrible, you never thought about running away. You carried the weight of that family on your shoulders.”
She raised an eyebrow. “You could do that for foster parents who treated you poorly. Why can’t you do it for your biological ones?”
Sang Jing’s tone was firm but not unkind. In the original novel, An Siyuan was a decent person. Sang Jing decided to shift her strategy: instead of running, she would try to pull the “heroine” out of her current dead end.
An Siyuan fell silent. What can I do? What can I do for the An family?
After a minute, she looked up, her voice trembling. “The An family is in trouble. Can you help? I know you have the channels to open new sales routes for us.”
Sang Jing’s expression returned to a professional mask. “For partnership matters, you’ll need to talk to the Business Department.”
An Siyuan: “…”
She was just being so gentle… why is it suddenly ‘talk to the department’?!
