Chapter 19: Supporting Agriculture
“Opening a New Shopping Model: Jing-Selection Hits Hard, Surpassing 500,000 Registered Users and 1 Billion Billion Transaction Volume in Just One Week!”
“Jing-Selection’s One-Week Transaction Volume Equals Kou Group Malls’ Annual Revenue. Will the Rise of Online Shopping Lead Kou Group Malls to a Dead End?”
“To Buy is to Earn: Have You Shopped at Jing-Selection Yet? Interviewing Ten Users to Discover the Real Online Shopping Experience!”
The “Shopping Week” had passed, but the buzz remained. Numerous media outlets reported on this grand event, making the software a household name.
After the promotion week, the massive discounts ended, but prices for most items remained lower than physical stores. Consequently, both user activity and sales figures stayed optimistic. Those who had scored cheap goods became “organic influencers,” flaunting their hauls and telling everyone that Jing-Selection was worth it.
Internally, Jing-Selection began shifting from a purely self-operated model to inviting third-party merchants. Originally, every product sold was under a contract where the platform acted as the sole agent. However, to scale, they needed to open the platform to outside vendors.
While the company was busy with recruitment, Sang Jing was busy integrating product feedback. Many merchants from out of town were applying to open shops and uploading product information. Through this data, Sang Jing received “suggestions” from the products themselves:
Qiushan Honey Tangerines: 【I’m ripe! I’m super sweet! If you don’t sell me soon, I’ll rot on the tree!】 Nanjiao Tribute Pears: 【Please approve us! I’m super sweet and crisp, but I can’t find a buyer this year!】 Yushui Pomegranates: 【Can online shopping sell me out? Grandpa is waiting for the money to pay for his granddaughter’s tuition!】
Sang Jing’s mind whirred.
In the original novel, the host was extremely selfish, greedy, and looked down on the poor. Building this app to make money was considered “normal” behavior for her—someone from a rich background trying to reclaim her wealth after being cast out.
However, if she organized a “Support Agriculture” event—a pure public welfare project where the company made zero profit—the plot line would surely deviate further. For Jing-Selection, even if they didn’t make money directly, building a relationship with the government, increasing brand awareness, and gaining users was a strategic win.
She immediately discussed it with her parents.
“I’ve gathered some info. It’s autumn, and while fruit is ripening, many farmers can’t sell their crops. They’re rotting in the fields. I want our second big event to be a ‘Support Agriculture’ drive. It’s a good way to build rapport with official departments.”
Sang Wei was moved. He knew his daughter was a brilliant business mind. High-profile companies often attract unwanted attention; showing goodwill to the authorities would ensure the company’s smooth growth.
“It’s a great idea. The second investment of 5 billion is ready. Go ahead and do it boldly. Your mother and I support you.”
With a dedicated team and the support of Zhang Ling (Purchasing) and Gong Fang (Events), the “Support Agriculture” framework was set. While some new employees were worried about shipping fruit or the lack of profit, Zhang Ling and Gong Fang—who had already been converted into Sang Jing’s loyal followers—shut down the doubts immediately.
…
Sang Jing received news of several fruit farmers who, unable to sell their crops to wholesalers, were carrying crates into the city every day to sell on the streets. They were constantly being moved along by city management because they didn’t have legal stalls.
Just as she was heading to the market to meet them, Kou Yan called her to go dog-walking.
That lingering male lead…
Sang Jing said coldly, “Then come to the vegetable market. Let your ‘Baby’ see the world, see the warmth and coldness of humanity, and the dangers of society. Let it realize how good its life is now.”
Kou Yan looked at “Baby,” who was currently chewing on the sofa, and thought Sang Jing had a point.
The butler watched the six-figure leather sofa get shredded, his heart bleeding. “Sir, this is the second sofa Baby has destroyed.”
Kou Yan replied, “Replace it. He seemed happier chewing the last one, so get the same brand as before.”
The butler’s lip twitched. “Yes, sir.”
Kou Yan stood up. After having the butler wipe the Husky’s paws and mouth, he said, “I’m taking him out to see the ‘dangers of society.’ Hopefully, he’ll be more sensible when he returns.”
The butler put on the leash. Seeing the Husky—who looked stern and cold while struggling wildly—he felt the dog wouldn’t learn anything about “suffering.” It would only learn to be more arrogant, relying on its wealthy owner. However, seeing the fleeting softness in Kou Yan’s eyes when playing with the dog, the butler felt it was all worth it.
I really have to thank Miss Sang. If she hadn’t had the courage to tell the Master he was ‘sick,’ he never would have realized it.
…
Sang Jing arrived at the market with her assistant, Zuo Wei. They didn’t want the farmers to lose a day’s business, so they went to them. The farmers were tucked away in a corner of the entrance, waiting for passersby.
Sang Jing chatted with them after buying some fruit.
“The wholesalers didn’t come this year. They said the market is saturated and they can’t make a profit after shipping costs,” an old farmer sighed.
“My family is waiting for this money for my kid’s university tuition. It’s been a month late. If we don’t pay, the child will lose face at school.”
“Last year was bad too. I borrowed tens of thousands to invest in the orchard this year. If the fruit doesn’t sell, I can’t pay back the debt.”
Sang Jing nodded and comforted them. “When we go back, we will plan a ‘Fresh Fruit’ event. We’ll do our best to help you sell everything.”
The farmers’ eyes turned red with hope. Even if they weren’t sure if she was telling the truth, they desperately wanted to believe her.
At that moment, in the passenger seat of a car parked nearby, a girl called out to her driver, “Honey, stop for a second! I think I saw my ‘fake’ cousin. Is she so poor now she can’t afford imported fruit and has to shop at a peasant market?”
Her voice was full of excitement. Behind her car, Kou Yan’s vehicle was also pulling into the parking lot.
